Discontinued Build Guide
This is a discontinued build guide from a past season. To see all current Druid builds, check out the guide below.
Best Druid Builds in Season 5
The core of this build is to weave between , and , for three reasons:
gives us a stacking damage increase to all of our Skills when we shift between forms.
makes our enemies Vulnerable.
and solves all our Spirit generation issues.
The synergy of , and really comes to bare when you get . You will be Trampling around the battlefield and then Shredding between enemies constantly.
The Shred Druid Build is best for speed farming and Helltides. It does well in Nightmare dungeons close to level, but is not the best for Nightmare Dungeon tier pushing.
Shifter Shred Druid Overview in Diablo 4
Druids can shapeshift. What is a Druid if they don't shapeshift? Nothing, I tell you. So in this guide, we will dive deep into the primal nature of the Druid class, and focus heavily on how to maximize Shifting between Werebear and Werewolf to - if you will - shred our enemies to pieces.
Poison and guts will be flying as you shred your enemies to pieces.
Season 5 PTR Changes for Shifter Shred Druid
The Season 5 PTR isn't changing anything about our build or how we play, but we are getting buffed!
is getting a
substantial
damage buff.
range is doubled.
is going from 6% DR at max rank to 9%.
All in all, nothing major, but a nice damage buff to our main Skill.
Effects of Patch 1.4.3 for Shifter Shred Druid
We see a swathe of minor buffs to the Shifter Shred Druid, from the updates to Spirit Boons as well as Skill and Passive buffs. got a Poison damage increase, and we see numbers buffs to and . Nothing major, and nothing big enough to change our build, but everything helps.
Strengths and Weaknesses for Shifter Shred Druid
With a heavy focus on mobility and AoE damage, the Shifter Shred Werewolf is extremely capable of dealing with medium to large groups of enemies. However, since almost all of our abilities will be melee, we might sometimes struggle when the numbers of enemies get overwhelming, or when a boss has a lot of frontal mechanics that you need to avoid.

Shifter Shred Druid Skills in Diablo 4 Season 5
While this is a Shifter Shred build, there are several good reasons to run Storm Strike. Storm Strike gives us an opportunity to make our enemies Vulnerable, which is a huge asset for any class and build.
You could call Trample a flavor choice, as it can be up to preference on the kind of CC and positioning you enjoy, but it lets you reposition your enemies and yourself (even if you're CCed as it makes you Unstoppable), and it also packs a punch when paired with our passives. It is also what will let us rack up stacks of .
However, when it comes down to it, our main damage will be Shred, and all the other skills are there to maximize the possible damage we can deal with Shred. All of our skills synergize with and/or buffs Shred. So get ready to dash around the battlefield.
Druid Skills Overview
Shifter Shred Druid Skill Tree
The Standard Endgame Build for Shifter Shred Druid is the build you'll be using most of the time for a wide variety of content -- Tree of Whispers, Helltides, dungeons, and most other normal activities.
While there are Unique items that would change a couple of skills in this tree (namely ), the changes are minuscule and only affect the skills we have on our action bar, not the allocation of points. These possible changes are covered under each Unique item in the Gear guide.
As far as Hardcore goes, the Shifter Shred Druid is pretty squishy in early levels and you might prefer to follow our Pulverize Werebear guide until level 40-50, at which point the Shifter Shred build starts getting a little more robust and has reliable self-sustain. At later levels, this build can be a fun challenge for Hardcore players that like to dish out a lot of damage with fewer defensives.
Shifter Shred Druid Rotation
Most of your damage will be coming from
Shred
, especially on Elites and Bosses. Our goal is to maximize the number of modifiers, by keeping our enemies Poisoned and Vulnerable, and racking up stacks of
Quickshift
to maximize the damage out of our abilities.
- Start spreading your poison, to get +% damage on Poisoned enemies.
- Start Shredding.
- Weave in Storm Strike between
Shreds
when you need Spirit, to apply Vulnerable and to gain stacks of
Quickshift
.
- Leap into Trample when you have a proc from or when you need to get out of a sticky situation / CC. Make sure to stay in this form for at least 2 seconds to activate . This also helps you keep up stacks of
Quickshift
.
- Once you've reached max stacks of
Quickshift
, pop Lacerate (make sure to be Stealthed if you have ). Then, keep weaving between Forms to keep
Quickshift
stacks up.
- Save this self-heal for when you need it in risky encounters, or use it offensively for increased Attack Speed when you feel confident.
Shifter Shred Druid Active Skills
This section describes the Active skills you'll be taking for this build, along with any modifiers.
Storm Strike
(1/5)
Basic
Modifiers:
While Storm Strike won't get any damage benefits from all the shapeshifting talents we will be picking, don't sleep on what this ability already brings: Cleave damage that has a high chance of making enemies Vulnerable () AND a low chance of Immobilizing them (). Not only that, it gives you Damage Reduction after dealing damage with the ability.
So while the damage is nothing to brag about, the core of this ability and its modifiers are game-changers. Weaving in Storm Strike in between casts also gives us stacks of .
Shred
(5/5)
Core
Modifiers:
Shred
will be your spender and main source of Single Target damage. It's also a great tool to clear out hordes of enemies, as all attacks cleave. It's our core skill for a reason: great damage + mobility tool with its dashes.
Both the Attack Speed and Healing from is very welcome, and gives us even better mobility in addition to playing into our Crit-heavy build.
This ability will truly begin to shine when you learn how to maximize its output: Weave between either or to stack up 's Damage Increase, pump out as many as possible during , and make use of the increased Attack Speed and Critical Strike Chance from . There are also items that increase your Critical Strike Chance or even guarantee it after certain prerequisites ( for example), and with both and Critical Strikes become extremely strong.
Blood Howl
(2/5)
Defensive
Modifiers:
Not all classes are able to self-heal as much as the Werewolf, and even fewer have an on-demand healing skill. This is simply a great skill to boost your survivability and helps supplement and save your Healing Potions.
makes dungeons and adds-heavy boss fights much easier to deal with, as Blood Howl will become available again much faster. helps out tremendously with not only pumping out more damage more quickly, but also improving Spirit regeneration with when needed.
All in all, a great skill for either defense or offense - often both!
Rabies
(1/5)
Wrath
Modifiers:
Rabies is really only here for one thing, and that is to make our enemies Poisoned. It gives our value, and many items and Paragon points give us increased damage against Poisoned enemies.
Rabies becomes a little stronger in Single Target with , but even then it's not the most impactful ability we have. Still, more damage is welcome. is our only choice, as actually decreases the duration of the Poisoned effect, and we don't want that. Plus, helps us spread the poison quicker to more targets.
Trample
(5/5)
Wrath
Modifiers:
A big part of our Shifting, and Trample is just straight-up fun. And strong! You can hit a lot of enemies with this ability, in addition to dealing crazy amounts of damage when they get knocked into walls. It's also a great way to get away from dangerous situations, as you can use the skill even if you are CCed.
makes the skill especially strong against Elites and Bosses, while simply helps with Spirit generation. If you find yourself wanting more defense, you can go for .
As mentioned several times already, every ability that isn't a Werewolf ability also helps us get more out of . Trample will really feel this damage increase when we are at full stacks.
Finally, gives us the incentive to stand around for 2 seconds after casting to get a HUGE damage increase. While it might feel strange to just wander for 2 seconds... 50% increased damage is worth it. Keep an eye on that buff bar!
Lacerate
(1/5)
Ultimate
Modifiers:
While Lacerate's damage has never been the most impressive, the changes it has received has made it more useful. With now increasing our Shapeshifting damage it becomes a great part of our toolkit to stack modifiers on each other to maximize damage.
If you have , make sure to use Lacerate to break Stealth to guarantee at least 10 Critical Strikes, maximizing the buff we get from .
It's also a decent defensive ability, making us Immune (which can be used to avoid dangerous mechanics) and heals us for at least 36% of our Maximum Life through , and up to 72% if we Crit a lot.
Shifter Shred Druid Passive Skills
Passive skills are important for tying a build together, as well as building on the synergies for the Shifter Shred Druid build.
Heart of the Wild
(1/3)
Core
Increasing maximum Spirit isn't really that attractive, but this node is a pre-requisite for , which we very much want.
Wild Impulses
(3/3)
Core
This is an excellent talent. The increased damage outweighs the increased Spirit cost to , so go ahead and max it out.
Predatory Instinct
(3/3)
Core
Critical Strike is one of the cornerstones in this build, and seeing as basically all of our abilities are melee, all enemies we hit will be Close enemies. Free Critical Strike Chance!
Digitigrade Gait
(3/3)
Core
We'll be spending lots of time in Werewolf form, and we will be using which increases our Movement Speed further. Good for mobility, and good for running away when needed. Let's zoom!
Iron Fur
(3/3)
Core
While we won't be staying in Werebear form for any long periods of time, the fact that the Damage Reduction persists after shifting out of Bear makes this worth it. We will also be using which increases our Damage Reduction further. Can also be used defensively, when running away with .
Ancestral Fortitude
(1/3)
Defensive
While Resistances can be helpful for difficult end-game content, there are better ways to get it than this talent. But we do want access to , so grab one point.
Vigilance
(3/3)
Defensive
On-demand Damage Reduction is always welcome, especially with an ability like that gets a significantly shorter cooldown because of .
Neurotoxin
(1/3)
Wrath
Having Poisoned enemies be slowed is a great asset, seeing as has a pretty high uptime. This also unlocks the Damage increase from the Legendary Aspect, since Slowed counts as a CC. But the true potential lies in the talents that unlock after Neurotoxin - and . So we will stick to one point in this node.
Envenom
(3/3)
Wrath
The Shifter Shred Druid will gain a lot of damage from this talent. The synergy of dealing extra damage to Poisoned enemies, having high Critical Strike Chance and then dealing ADDITIONAL Critical Strike Damage to Poisoned enemies? It is simply excellent.
Toxic Claws
(3/3)
Wrath
This is another talent that simply adds passive damage to our build. We are focusing heavily on Critical Strikes, so making our Critical Strikes deal more damage is a no-brainer.
Quickshift
(3/3)
Ultimate
This is the first piece of the puzzle to our "Shifter" Shred. This is why you want to weave between , , and . Building up those stacks is going to be your main job, so get used to watching your Buff Bar to make sure you are at max stacks.
Heightened Senses
(3/3)
Ultimate
The Shifter Shred Druid is still a fairly squishy build, so adding some Damage Reduction is a good idea. Movement Speed is welcome too! Since we will be shifting between Werewolf and Werebear very often (it's literally called the SHIFTER), it should be easy enough to have 100% uptime on at least the Movement Speed. Once you have , you should be able to have high uptime on the Damage Reduction as well.
Note: These bonuses are doubled when both are active, so, get ready to ZOOOOOM!
Bestial Rampage
Key Passives
While definitely seems lucrative for a Critical Strike-heavy Werewolf build, it can be difficult to time with the third and final strike from — the third strike should definitely be the one to get this guaranteed Critical Strike, since it deals more than double the amount of damage compared to the first two strikes. takes up a tick in this 6-hit cycle, and if Shred hits multiple enemies it counts as a hit per enemy. It can definitely have value on Bosses, as you will mostly attack one target and can time this 6-hit cycle, but even then it can be difficult when comes into play.
So instead, we're going with . Staying in Werewolf for 2 seconds every 15 seconds will not be a problem, and the Attack Speed bonus is huge. Naturally, more Attack Speed means more - Weaving, which means more damage. It might seem like an easy solution, but it's also an effective solution.
In addition to this, if you have time to just prance around for 2 seconds after casting , you'll get a HUGE damage increase. With the cooldown of being shorter than the duration of the buff, you could have 100% uptime on this Damage Increase. It might be difficult in practice, but if you can make it work, it's worth it.
Shifter Shred Druid Spirit Boons Selections
Spirit Boons that you would normally take for leveling are not the best choices for endgame.
Deer
- Wariness - take 10% reduced damage from Elites.
Bond with the Eagle
- Swooping Attacks - Gain 10% Attack Speed, and Avian Wrath - Gain 30% Critical Strike Damage.
Wolf
- Bolster - Fortify for 15% of your Maximum Life when you use a Defensive Skill
OR
Energize - Lucky Hit: Dealing damage has up to a 15% chance to restore 10 Spirit.
This one comes down to preference. If you still find yourself wanting more Spirit, go for
Energize
. If not, more defensives is always welcome to our squishy Werewolf with
Bolster
.
Snake
- Masochistic - Critical Strikes with Shapeshifting skills heal you for 3% Maximum Life.
