This Wowhead endgame build guide covers the best Skills, rotation, gear, Paragon boards, Glyphs, nodes, and consumables for the Lightning Storm Druid in Diablo 4.
The Lightning Storm Build was one of the first top-performing Druid builds in Diablo 4's release. Throughout the seasons, its strength has ebbed and flowed with the meta. There have been times when it was the strongest Druid build and times when it struggled to cling onto A Tier. Although one of its major damage multipliers, , has been capped, Season 5 introduces new Uniques that rejuvenate this build.
Lightning Storm Druid in Season 5
We retain the lightning-bolt turret playstyle from seasons past, incorporating once again to change our Storm Skills into Werewolf Skills. This allows us to scale the damage of beyond what it's traditionally capable of, as compared to if it were left as a Storm Skill. For example, we're taking the Key Passive because of its numerous damage multipliers in and of itself as well as the synergies it has with .
This build does require a substantial number of Unique items (as well as a single Mythic Unique in the form of ) to perform at its highest level. In the guide below, we detail which of the items are more necessary than others to have this build properly work.
Speaking of which, some of our strongest Uniques were drastically changed right before the launch of Season 5. For starters, has had its range of plus ranks to doubled from 3 to 6; the range of potential damage in the Unique's effect has been increased from 20% to 40%; and the item has been given a Damage to Distant Enemies affix, which notably is a Damage Temper.
Secondly, the is fresh off the press. This is a little concerning because the chance for it to be untested and possibly bugged is a little higher. Anyways, what's so great about this item is that it brings into our rotation by giving us unlimited Spirit while the skill is active and up to 100% increased damage. Because of this, we are investing in Cataclysm Duration, ranks to , and the Calm Before The Storm Spirit Boon.

Lightning Storm Druid Strengths and Weaknesses

Weaknesses
This build's strengths are riddled throughout the guide so I won't belabor how strong the interactions are in Season 5. However, let's talk about its weaknesses and what we can possibly do to alleviate some of those challenges. With all the scampering within the Skill Tree and Paragon Board we do to get various CC effects and damage multipliers, we underinvest in Fortify Generation and other Defensive Passive Skills.
Our Basic Skill is , and we take this primarily for the Lucky Hit that it provides since we're trying to nuke 's cooldown. However, it might be more worthwhile to switch to using and to have an additional source of Fortify that we can lean on.
We invest in two Companion Skills primarily for their ability to increase our Critical Strike Chance against affected enemies. is safe, and we need it for the Poison Damage and the Slow CC effect that Poison provides. However, there is a chance we may not need the doubling up of increased Critical Strike Chance against enemies with . In that case, we can move those points into , taking 1 additional point from to get the max investment. is great for us considering that we're moving in and out of both Werebear and Werewolf forms, receiving both the Damage Reduction and the movement speed bonus.
Best Lightning Storm Druid Skills and Rotation
Lightning Storm Druid Primary Skills and Rotation
The two biggest parts of our rotation are ensuring is up and active right before bigger fights and alternating between and to keep enemies Poisoned and have increased Critical Strike Chance against them. We'll use in early endgame progression to keep Spirit sustained, and then unload with . The goal is to be using on cooldown, or at least be around enough enemies through your Movement Speed to have the Ultimate Skill pay off.

Claw is our preferred Basic Skill because it offers the highest Lucky Hit Chance (LHC) among the available options at 50%. The only comparable alternative is with for the extra Fortify Generation. When we consider LHC alone, switching to Maul is not worth taking because of . This enhancement increases the skill's Attack Speed by 20%, which means we're able to proc the 50% LHC more often.
Claw can and will generate Spirit for us in the early stages of the endgame, but as we progress further and get better gear, this skill will primarily be used for its LHC to reduce the cooldown of and , so we continue keeping the Poison application and Critical Strike from both skills applied to enemies.

This is where we get all of our damage, hence the 5-point investment. We'll be pushing that rank number up pretty high with our BiS gear. Notable enhancements include which provides a chance for our Lightning Bolts to Immobilize enemies.

The final form of this build has us permanently in Werewolf form with , which means our constant use of is now also a Werewolf Skill in addition to still being a Storm Skill. This changes how we approach damage scaling. While has its usage in pure-Storm builds, taking this Key Passive won't give us as much power compared to .
TLDR:
has been buffed for S5 in the form of it affecting every 3rd Skill, as opposed to every 6th Skill in seasons prior, as well as now having a percentage increase to the damage of .

Best Lightning Storm Druid Spirit Boons
Deer
Wariness -
Take 15% reduced damage from Elites.
This is hands-down the best Spirit Boon we can take in this row, given how often we fight Elites in the endgame.
Eagle
Scythe Talons -
Gain 10% increased Critical Strike Chance.
Avian Wrath -
Gain 30% Critical Strike Damage.
We bond with the Eagle Spirit to get bonuses for both our Critical Strike Chance and Damage. This will help to make our Lightning and Dancing Bolts hit that much harder.
Wolf
Packleader -
Lucky Hit: Critical Strikes have up to a 25% chance to reset the Cooldowns of your Companion Skills.
It's a good idea to take this Spirit Boon anytime a build is relying on Companion Skills. For the Lightning Storm Druid in Season 5, we are using the Critical Strikes that come from to reset the cooldown on both and , which in turn allows us more uses of two heavy-LHC skills to lower the cooldown on other Skills such as and .
Snake
Calm Before the Storm -
Lucky Hit: Nature Magic Skills have up to a 10% chance to reduce the Cooldown of your Ultimate Skill by 2 seconds.
We're taking this Spirit Boon alongside full investment in to ensure is consistently used in our rotation.

Best Lightning Storm Druid Gear
This setup represents the best gear for the Lightning Storm Druid. Since many of these items and Aspects are based on drops, this may take time to achieve. Alternatives are provided when applicable, but making substitutions to BiS gear can have negative consequences on performance. You will want to Imprint Legendary Aspects onto other Legendary items, since Legendaries will have 3 Affixes and Rare items only have 2.

This is the Unique that makes the build work, without it we stay in Human Form while casting and do not benefit from all the Werewolf-specific damage multipliers. S5 reworks to the Item Affixes for this Unique introduced plus ranks to as well as Lightning Resistance.
With Unique items being more accessible, it shouldn't be too hard to find this either as a drop or through trading.

This Unique is doing a lot for us. The item's effect is very strong and helps to push ranks of , since we're slotting . Also, the bonus damage to the and the increase to Werewolf Attack Speed are very valuable.
S5 reworks to the Item Affixes for this Unique introduced more ranks of Werewolf Skills, damage, and plus ranks to .

These Gloves are our strongest item. Their Unique effect causes to gain additional strikes as it grows, meaning players should refresh channeling depending on the number of enemies they are trying to hit. For example, AoE encounters require a longer channel duration versus single-target fights where you'll want to refresh channeling more often. Also, Critical Strikes result in Lightning Strikes casting twice, e.g., it's basically a two-for-one deal.
The S5 reworks to this Item's Affixes have been very kind. The top end of the affix range on the Unique effect has been doubled from 20% to 40%, and the item now has some of the top stats we're targeting with this build: Critical Strike Chance and Damage to Distant Enemies.

We're taking this Aspect for the extra Damage Reduction while in Werewolf Form.

This build does not have an Unstoppable effect in its Skills, so we're slotting this Aspect for that reason.
Amulet

: Damage to Distant Enemies and plus ranks to
This Aspect has changed for S5. The initial duration of the "lightning-charged air" has increased, as well as the damage range. Most notably, Lightning Bolts in general now deal up to 40% additional damage. We're slotting this Aspect into the Amulet slot for the 50% increase in power.

This ring or ryng or rng is very pivotal for our damage ceiling. While is active, we're given unlimited Spirit and deal up to 100% increased damage. Not much else really needs to be said.

This Mythic Unique's effect is pretty noteworthy considering the top end of its damage range, but its affixes are also amazing. The S5 Updates introduced Attack Speed, Critical Strike Chance, Lucky Hit Chance, and plus ranks to Core Skills.
is a viable alternative until you're able to find this Mythic Unique. It increases the damage of our Core Skills based on the amount of Fortify we have.
Main Hand
Masterworking Priority
: Damage to Distant Enemies
With our considerable sources of Lucky Hit, this AoE-damaging Aspect is popping off quite consistently. It has a similar effect to the Overload Spirit Boon, which also relies on Lucky Hit to pulse damage outwards from a targeted enemy. We're slotting a one-handed sword as our main hand for the inherent Critical Strike Damage bonus.

: Cooldown Reduction
This Aspect gives us the ability to spawn Dancing Bolts alongside the Lightning Strikes from . It's where the real room-cleaning AoE damage comes from. We're slotting a totem as our off-hand for the lucky hit bonus.
Druid Legendary Aspects Druid Uniques
Best Lightning Storm Druid Affixes and Tempers
In many cases, you will want to reroll at least one undesirable Item Affix from a piece of gear. This is not possible with Unique items; all Affixes are preset, and you can't even drag it into the Occultist's Enchant window.
Replacing any Affix at the Occultist will replace it with a normal Affix, not a Greater Affix.
These are among the best Item Affixes and Tempering Affixes for Lightning Storm Druid in endgame, organized by type (not all Affixes can appear on every type of gear). Remember that you can only reroll one normal Affix per item, so if you get an item with more than one undesirable or unusable Affix, you may want to reconsider using it.
Main Hand
- The Inherent Affix for the one-handed sword is Critical Strike Damage. Our Tempered Affix Priority for this slot is Damage to Distant Enemies. In the other slot, we want Lucky Hit: Chance to Deal Lightning Damage. For Greater Affixes, target Critical Strike Damage.
Off-Hand
- The Inherent Affix for the Totem is 10% Lucky Hit Chance. Our Tempered Affix Priority for this slot is Damage to Distant Enemies. In the other slot, we want Lucky Hit: Chance to Deal Lightning Damage. For Greater Affixes, target Cooldown Reduction then Critical Strike Damage.
Amulet
- Our Tempered Affix Priority for this slot is Damage to Distant Enemies. In the other slot, we want Cataclysm Cooldown Reduction. For Greater Affixes, target plus ranks to .
Legs
- Our Tempered Affix Priority for this slot is Debilitating Roar Cooldown Reduction. In the other slot, we want Lucky Hit: Chance to Freeze Target. Depending on where your Armor is at, target Armor or Willpower for Greater Affixes.
Boots
- The Inherent Affix we're targeting for boots is Attacks Reduce Evade's Cooldown. Our Tempered Affix Priority for this slot is plus ranks to . In the other slot, we want Lucky Hit: Chance to Freeze Target. For Greater Affixes, target Willpower and Maximum Life.
Ring
- If you're taking while waiting for , prioritize Cataclysm Cooldown Reduction as your first Tempered Affix and Damage to Distant Enemies as the other. For Greater Affixes, target Critical Strike Damage.

Best Lightning Storm Druid Paragon Boards
With 225 possible points (1 at 50, 200 from leveling, 20 from Renown, and 4 from Altars of Lilith), it is possible to open all 8 class boards, but most builds use 4-5. All classes begin with their Start board, and can then choose to attach one of 8 class-specific boards. The Start board is the same for all class members and cannot be changed.
The Lightning Storm Druid Paragon setup uses the following Paragon boards, Glyphs, Legendary nodes, and Rare nodes:
Start Board
One of our primary stats is Critical Strike Damage. Slotting a Glyph that relies on Dexterity in our Starter Board allows us to get an early boost to this stat, which comes in at +150% Critical Strike Damage.
The start of our paragon journey front loads certain Defensives to help us better negotiate the switch into World Tier 3. With that in mind, we take the Rare Nodes that include Maximum Life, Armor, Willpower, and Resistance to All Elements.
Lust for Carnage
Both the Bonus and Additional Bonus from maxing this Glyph out are super helpful in early endgame progression. We're getting a source of Damage Reduction as well as increases to damage while in Werewolf Form. This is different from a damage increase to Werewolf Skills, in that it applies universally to all damage dealt while in Werewolf Form.
Taking is an easy win as far as Spirit Generation goes. Since we're stacking Critical Strike Chance, we should reap this node's benefit quite often. Progress through this board has been designed so that our path to the next board includes getting this Legendary Node.
The Rare Nodes in this board are the true unsung heroes. Increases to Werewolf Damage, Damage while in Werewolf Form, and Critical Strike Damage are what we're after.
Constricting Tendrils
This Glyph is all about increasing Damage in the Lighting Bolts from and the Dancing Bolts from . We're taking more Willpower Nodes than necessary for the increased damage each of them provides to these two types of Lightning Damage. After maxing the Glyph, we should end up with +470% Lightning Bolt and Dancing Bolt damage.
We do not take the Legendary node on this Paragon board.
In our fervor (on this board), we take these Rare Nodes for the hefty bonuses to Nature Magic and Lightning Bolt and Dancing Bolt damage types.
Inner Beast
After slotting , every Skill we have on our bars — besides Companion Skills — is a Shapeshifting Skill. Notably, is the one skill we're most focused on. This Glyph brings a 25% chance for our Core Skill of choice to critically hit. This is not our only source of Critical Strike Chance, but it is one we can depend on.
Since we are requiring the damage from to perform in pinnacle content, we choose to invest the points necessary to grab this Legendary Node. While the reduction in Spirit costs is nice, we are taking this primarily for the 5-second cooldown reduction to our Ultimate Skill.
We take these specific Rare Nodes to build out our Shapeshifting Damage, Max Life, Armor, and Critical Strike Damage.
Ancestral Guidance
We do not take the Glyph Socket on this Paragon board, because we are focusing Paragon Points on pathing to the Legendary Node.
It's hard not to take this Legendary Node when it alone gives us a flat 30% increase to damage after spending a certain amount of Spirit, which is something we're often doing with a Core Skill build such as this.
Due to our investments elsewhere, we are not taking any Rare Nodes on this board.
Thunderstruck
Last but not least, we take this Glyph for its increase to Lightning Damage. Yes, there are Healthy and Injured enemy-type modifiers, but considering these entail both sides of the spectrum, our rotation won't have to change in any dramatic way for us to benefit from this Glyph.
This Legendary Node did get a cap on its potential damage, but it was necessary when considering the overall health of the class. To decipher the tooltip text, any bonuses you have for Damage To Close or Distant Enemies will boost your Storm Skills' damage. This means that Storm Skills deal increased damage based on a combination of your bonuses for Damage To Close and Damage To Distant enemies. The current cap is 60%.
The associated Rare Nodes on this Board all build out various aspects of our Damage, i.e., Critical Strike Damage, Storm Damage, and Damage to CCed Enemies.

Best Lightning Storm Druid Gems and Consumables
Gems come in various qualities from Chipped to Royal. While the Gem properties do not change, the traits improve with higher quality. We only list the highest quality Gems here, but you should always socket the best Gem you can craft and equip at your level. Gems can be crafted at the Jeweler.
Best Armor Gems for Lightning Storm Druid
Typically, we just assume +Max Life for the Armor slot given how necessary health is in the endgame; however, S5 brings a change to what Willpower does for our overall strength. Previously, we'd receive 1% damage per 10 points of Willpower invested. Now, and in S5 currently, we receive 1% damage per 8 points of Willpower invested. This change was done to account for the differing number of Aspect slots that other classes, namely the Rogue and Barbarian, have compared to others.
The math is a little mind-boggling, but if this change ends up really pushing our damage ceiling, then slotting in for Armor might be a good move to make, but don't forget you have to be alive to see this damage through.
Best Weapon Gems for Lightning Storm Druid
Gems for our Weapon and Offhand slots are easier, i.e., Critical Strike Damage is a priority stat for us, and these gems are a solid source of that stat increase.
Best Jewelry Gems for Lightning Storm Druid
Depending on how your build ends up at Level 100, you will either need to round out a single resistance to the 70% softcap or raise your Armor to the cap of 9,230. So, do whatever makes the most sense for you.
Jeweler Guide
Best Elixirs and Incense for Lightning Storm Druid
Elixirs offer a wide variety of effects, along with an Experience boost of up to 8%. Elixirs can be either offensive or defensive, and a few of them are so powerful that you can only get them as drops, or you must find their recipes to craft them. Incense works both in a group and solo, increasing Stats, Resistances, or defenses for 20 minutes for all nearby players. Elixirs and Incense can be crafted at the Alchemist. We recommend using any of the following Elixirs and Incense:
Elixirs
- You'll want to prioritize this Elixir first since so much of the build is about increasing our Critical Strike Chance with our various sources of lightning-based damage.
- If we can get pluses to Max Life, then we should go for it in generalized play, i.e., when you start target-farming bosses or taking on WT4 content.
Depending on the activity and the damage type expected, it's also important to consider where your resistances are at. With this in mind, using an Elixir for whichever Resistance you're lacking the most is a good move to make, especially if Poison or Lightning Damage is kicking your butt, as an example.
Incense
- Since Incense is divided between Types and thus we're able to stack different types, choosing Incense to use in pinnacle content is an easier decision to make. Primary Stat Incense such as this is going to be a good start.
- This is also an obvious winner for the +40 All Stats, however, it's especially important for us since we're leaning on Critical Strike in this build.
or - This depends again on where your resistances are at, so consider the encounter's damage types when deciding which to choose from the Type 2 Incense category.
