The Story of Alleria and Turalyon
Alleria Windrunner embracing the Void is one of the most shocking reveals of Patch 7.3. In the new audio drama “A Thousand Years of War” written by Robert Brooks and narrated by Stephen Pacey, we learn how she found her affinity for the Void, how she escaped from Niskara, and why Xe’ra imprisoned her.
Let’s give "A Thousand Years of War" a listen, recap the highlights, and examine where you can find all of the major characters in game.
If you cannot listen to the audio drama, you can view

.
Thank you to Blizzard for providing us with the posters to give away, as well as a sneak peek at the audio drama so we could prepare a detailed lore analysis.
Part One – Two Bright Lights
Two Bright Lights opens with Alleria and Turalyon trapped in the Twisting Nether during the destruction of Draenor, pursued by one of Kil’jaeden’s assassins. They escape the Twisting Nether through a portal of the Light, where they meet the holy demon Lothraxion who explains the power of Xe’ra and the Army of the Light.
I am a commander. I am a warrior of the Light. And today, I am a messenger of fate itself. My name is Lothraxion. The Mother of Light has foreseen that you two will help ensure the salvation of all living creatures. She sent me to rescue you. Come. Sit down. We have much to discuss."
Lothraxion teaches Turalyon the ways of the Light, while Alleria and Turalyon playfully banter. While their affection in clear, the story sets up the conflict early on that Alleria does not feel the same affinity to the Light as Turalyon.
After Lothraxion left, Turalyon was glowing. Literally glowing.
For Alleria, that lost its charm after the sun went down.
"Can you stop, please? You are ruining my night vision," she said sweetly.
After dispatching of Kil’jaeden’s demonic assassin, Xe’ra infuses Alleria and Turalyon with holy light, speaking to them in a vision. Here one of the greatest mysteries of Patch 7.3 is explained--the flexible nature of time outside of Azeroth, which accounts for the Army of the Light’s claim that they have been fighting for thousands of years.
The currents of time flow ever forward, but the forces of the Twisting Nether are unpredictable. Look.
Another vision came to life. A giant ocean appeared, and Alleria and Turalyon gazed upon a massive vortex disturbing the waters. The whirlpool carried two pieces of driftwood, one at the edge, where the water was calm, and the other near the center. The one on the outside drifted slowly, lazily. The one in the center was violently tossed about, circling the vortex countless times. Storms roiled the waters, jarring the currents, injecting ever more chaos into the system.
Turalyon slowly began to understand. The same ocean, the same waters, yet affected differently by the same forces. Azeroth moved more slowly than the turbulent parts of the universe.
The Burning Legion has all the time it needs to prepare for war. Its victims never have any time at all. Yours is a world filled with bright lights, but it is not ready.
While Xe’ra has saved Alleria and Turalyon and provied them with the power of the Light, there are signs this early on that Xe’ra views the heroes of Azeroth as pawns, part of a larger Light-infused destiny. She shows Alleria and Turalyon visions of Illidan, believing him to be part of the prophecy of LIght--which ended disasterously in Patch 7.3.
The Light will one day cleanse this one's troubled heart, and he will become our greatest champion. He will destroy the Burning Legion.
Part One concludes with Alleria and Turalyon deciding to follow Xe’ra and Lothraxion, a necessary choice to protect Azeroth.
Part Two – The Emerald Star
At the start of Part Two, Turalyon receives a blessing of Light from Xe’ra in a ceremony that parallels the disasterous confrontation between Illidan and Xe’ra. Some lines of dialogue are eerily similar--the difference being that Turalyon fully embraces Xe’ra’s gift.
The Light will grant you wisdom. The Light will heal your scars. The Light will show you your destiny.
Turalyon… a child of Azeroth… a human of Lordaeron… a paladin of the Silver Hand… has crossed the boundaries of mortality. He has been found worthy to become an eternal protector of creation.
He has been forged in the Light.
As Alleria waits, the Light provides her with a bittersweet vision which still offers some comfort--her son, Arator, and sister, Sylvanas, gazing upon memorials to her and Turalyon in Stormwind. Here we are once again reminded that the flow of time in Azeroth is different than on Argus--three years vs forty.
For a period of time, life continues as normal as possible for Alleria and Turalyon. We read about the Xenedar, Turalyon learning how to master a new holy sword, Alleria imbuing her weapons with light, and Lothraxion using his Nathrezim past to hunt demons.
One day, Lothraxion and Alleria visit a Legion prison world, the destruction wrought by the power of Shadow. Her mind is instantly flooded with dark, striking visions:
She saw herself walking upon the surface of another world. One filled with demons. One she had only heard about. Argus.
Blink.
She stood in front of the emerald star and felt its terrible warmth on her face. It reached out to her, begging for help.
Blink.
She saw herself stepping off a cliff, falling into an infinite darkness, smiling all the way. She saw the peace in her own eyes.
In addition to the disturbing nature of the visions, another thing stood out to Alleria: the sheer force of Light and Shadow colliding in her vision, speaking to her on a powerful level.
As she learns more about Shadow, more backstories emerge for Locus-Walker, the Shadow trainer for Alleria present in Patch 7.3, and Lothraxion. Previously, Locus-Walker killed Lothraxion, but ensured to do so out of the Twisting Nether, to allow him to come back to life because he predicted a unique destiny for this demon.
After speaking to Lothraxion about the power of the Shadow, if one was strong enough to withstand the corruption, and experiencing the visions first-hand, Alleria is convinced the Shdow is useful to win the war against the Burning Legion. Xe’ra however is less convinced:
That war began before time itself. Make no mistake, Alleria: if you pursue contact with the Void, your destiny will fall into ruin. You will lose Turalyon. You will lose Arator. You will lose Silvermoon, Azeroth, and everything else you hold dear. The Light and the Shadow cannot exist together. You already know how to strike down the Void. That is all you need to know.
Time passes and five hundred years later for the Army of the Light, Outland is invaded by the Burning Legion and the Burning Crusade begins for players back on Azeroth. Alleria feels now is the time to act and fulfill her Shadow visions of journeying to Argus, now weakened by the Burning Legion’s focus on Outland.
Together with Turalyon, they visit this Light-forsaken planet, shocked at how desolate it is. Here, the mystery of the Emerald Star in the vision is solved--it’s a trapped world soul.
That thought seemed to attract attention. The presence in her mind was no longer fluttering. It went silent. It had noticed her. She felt a terrible warmth. She saw fire in her mind's eye. She saw a shimmering sphere of raw power, trapped, straining to escape a fel prison. An emerald prison.
The memories of the Emerald Star flood Alleria and she is bombarded by glimpses of a world betrayed and used to revive the souls of fallen demons. The visions end with the world soul calling out for help - two bright lights from Azeroth. Alleria and Turalyon have fulfilled the cry for help.
Suddenly ambushed by the Legion with their transportation pod surrounded, Alleria finds herself presented with an impossible choice: to die on Argus or use the power of the Void to save herself and Turalyon.
We were not meant to die on Argus today. Even Xe'ra knew it. But she could not see how we escaped. She could not see that it was the Shadow that would save us."
"I would rather have died than have you fall to evil!"
"I know. And yet my fate has not changed. We will see our son again. We will defeat the Legion."
With this action, Alleria knows that her future path to save Azeroth must be one of Shadow, leaving Turalyon behind to study this path.
Part Three – Shadow & Light
Shadow & Light
alternates between Alleria and Turalyon--they’re both caught in dire straits. Alleria is captured by the Burning Legion, along with Locus-Walker, while Turalyon launches an unsuccessful surprise attack on Argus.
We’re once again reminded that Xe’ra views humanity as pawns and is unsympathetic:
That hurt Turalyon perhaps more than anything. She had known that he would fail, and she had not tried to help him overcome that fate.
Alleria has more success fending off her captors--she resists interrogation and torture, refusing to give up the location of the Xenedar and have her soul drained into a soulstone. In an impressive display of Shadow magic, she defeats the demons and leaves quickly--no time to even pick up her weapon. Marksmanship Hunters will recognize this story as the leadup to the artifact acquisition scenario, in which hunters go to Niskara to rescue Alleria, but find that she’s escaped yet has left Thas’dorah behind.
Alleria then continues her training with Locus-Walker directly into the Void, where she has no need for her bow.
With Alleria escaped, the Burning Legion then sets their sights on draining the soul of Turalyon, sending the assassin from the story’s opening to trick Turalyon. Through shapeshifting and other tricks, Turalyon is led to believe Alleria’s corpse has appeared on the Xenedar, only to find that Lothraxion is seriously wounded.
Back to Alleria. She’s now learning that while she knew Xe’ra and the Light is blind, that Shadow can be blind in a completely devastating way as well, presenting horrific snippets of destiny:
"The Light seeks one path and shuns all others as lies. The Shadow seeks every possible path and sees them all as truth."
More visions. Possible futures. She saw Xe'ra, the Mother of Light, declaring her a heretic and calling for her death. She saw her blood on Turalyon's sword. She saw Arator calling an army of paladins to hunt her down, only to fall with her arrows in his throat. She saw herself kneeling before the One Who Slumbers beneath Azeroth's waves. She saw herself killing it and taking its place, leading a throng of horrors to consume every nation.
Alleria continues to fight with the visions, starting to control the Shadow as she seeks inner truths, personal beliefs she holds that are untouched by both the Light and Shadow.
When she does put the power of Light and Shadow together inside of her--she’s granted with a vision--Turalyon in pain having his soul drained by the Burning Legion. She abrupty ends her lessons with Locus-Walker and returns to save Turalyon, knowing that he cannot die now.
In full voidform, she interrupts the ritual, removes the poison from Lothraxion, and commands the final death of the demonic assassin--it will not be resurrected by the Legion again.
In spite of Alleria’s heroics, this is not a time for celebration. Lothraxion believes Alleria will yet be redeemed by the Light, and Turalyon is frantic to have Alleria escape before Xe’ra finds her.
"My destiny does not end with the Light. It ends in darkness. I have known that for a long, long time." She met his gaze without blinking. "And if I do not follow that path, I put you, Arator, and all of Azeroth at risk. Please believe me."
Lothraxion spoke up. "I have known darkness, Alleria. I have seen lost creatures. You are not one of them. You have not crossed the threshold."
"I will, one day," she said simply.
However, it’s too late for that and Xe’ra imprisons Alleria as punishment for embracing the Void, which is later referenced while questing through Krokuun.
The story concludes with Lothraxion and Turalyon sharing a belief that they trust not only in the Light, but in Alleria.
Future Speculation
“A Thousand Years of War” answers some questions about Patch 7.3, such as the flow of time and why Alleria was imprisoned, but also raises a new series of questions.
Alleria and the Void
Several times over the course of the story, Alleria alludes to letting go, crossing a threshhold, and surrendering her entire being to the Void. While the Shadow flooded her mind with terrible visions, many of which she was able to dismiss as fragments of the Void, she keeps returning to the idea of self-sacrifice.
"You are ready, Alleria. Every ounce of power out there will be at your command. Dive deeply into it. Your mind will yet be your own."
She was indeed ready. But it was not yet time. She had witnessed herself jumping from a cliff, peacefully surrendering to the long fall. When the time came, there would be no choice and no alternative. Now, she could still escape. And her destiny demanded that she must.
Do you think Alleria could more fully embrace the void in a later Legion patch? We still have a raid, Antorus the Burning Throne, and several story patches left for character development. In one of her visions, Alleria even imagines herself pledging loyalty to the One who Slumbers, N’Zoth. This Old God has been the subject of expansion speculation due to an armor set showing maps surrounded by tentacles.
Child of Light and Shadow
Alleria’s love for her son is a focal point of the story--Kil’jaeden’s assassin threatens her son, and a grounding belief that saves Alleria from believing all the lies of the Void is her unwaving love for Arator. Which leads to another point of speculation--Xe’ra loves prophecies, and believes Illidan to be the child of Light and Shadow. He forcefully rejects this prophecy, shattering Xe’ra. However, this story shows us that prophecies do come true, such as two lights from Azeroth finding the Emerald Star...but both the Light and Shadow separately only catch glimpses. Could it be that there is a child of Light and Shadow, but it’s Arator, not Illidan?
Datamined dialogue for Patch 7.3.2 shows Arator's feelings towards his family:
"I found them! At long last, I found them.
<Arator's smile gives way to a look of uncertainty.>
The two people who gave me life... have been absent for all of it. I know they fought to keep me safe, that they sacrificed so much. And yet...
We cannot suddenly become a happy family. They know next to nothing about me, and I know only legends of them. We have much to learn about one another, and many wounds to heal.
But at least we will do it together."
Alleria and Sylvanas
The story highlights Alleria’s love for her son, and in-game we see she’s close to Vereesa. She expresses shock that Sylvanas has joined the Horde, which makes us wonder if, given the chance, Alleria will try to avenge Sylvanas. She holds onto the memory of Sylvanas, before her Undeath, as something which brings her calm. Would Alleria understand that Sylvanas is walking a similarly dark path with sacrifices, or would she view Sylvanas as a family member that must be protected?
The desire for the Windrunner sisters to meet will play a major role in the future, according to datamined Patch 7.3.2 dialogue:
Vereesa
"Alleria has changed. She wields powers I do not fully comprehend. But in her heart, she remains my beloved sister. I know it.
The news of Sylvanas weighs heavily upon her. There are matters to be settled... face to face.
The Windrunner sisters must meet. And there is only one place it can be done."
Alleria
My heart soars to return to Azeroth alongside Arator and Turalyon. To see the forests of my homeland once again.
And yet...
Vereesa told me what has befallen Sylvanas. Though I dread the meeting, I must see with my own eyes what she has become.
Is she even my sister anymore? Or some Light-forsaken monster?
But of course, I have changed as well. The powers at my command may cause some to question my loyalties.
<Alleria draws in a long breath.>
I must remain calm, focused. There is much to ponder..."
Alleria's Destiny
Back in
Изумрудный Кошмар
, during its encounter,
Ил'гинот
whisper players many different lines. While being recommended to not listen to them, as the Void only whispers lies, we're shown in the story that that isn't necessarily true as Locus-Walker tells Alleria:
The Light seeks one path and shuns all others as lies. The Shadow seeks every possible path and sees them all as truth.
and one quote in specific quote from
Ил'гинот
can be tied to Alleria:
At the hour of her third death, she will usher in our coming.
The story presents two 'deaths' of Alleria.
First to the Alliance and, specially, to her son,
Аратор Искупитель
, shown in the vision that Alleria has of the innauguration of the statues in front of Stormwind.
The second one, to Turalyon, which can be considered either when Alleria abandons him to seek further instructions with the Void, or when Eradication tricks him into believing Alleria's corpse is at the engine room of the Xenedar.
Another strong hint that this quote refers to her is given in her conversation with Lothraxion, when she replies
I will, one day.
to him when he tells her that her mind hasn't fell to the Void. Maybe Alleria will play a pivotal role in Antorus or in future Lore, but at cost of her sanity.
We've also datamined
Patch 7.3.2 Audio Spoilers
, including a message from Illidan referencing the Shadows:
You have proven your commitment to Azeroth. Your dedication, your sacrifice rivals my own. But more will be asked of you, so much more. Even now, enemies gather, and the shadows grow darker.
The Emerald Star and Future Expansion Hints
Finally, this story offers more tantalizing glimpses as to the Emerald Star. In Part Two, Alleria communicates with what appears to be the World Soul of Argus, receiving a cryptic warning. Argus is being used to revive the souls of the demon of the Burning Legion, and now the Legion wants to claim another planet, Azeroth, that holds another Titan Soul, even more powerful than Argus' one. This lines up with Magni Bronzebeard receiving warnings from Azeroth and experiencing her similar nightmares:
They enslaved worlds. They burned worlds. They used its strength to revive their fallen souls. It hurts so much.
They found another. It was much more powerful. They wanted to claim it, too. Then they would be unstoppable.
Yesterday, we received major news about Argus, the Emerald Star. First, all
Argus Encounter Abilities
were added to the journal on the PTR--Argus is the final boss of Antorus, the Burning Throne. In this fight, Argus lashes out at us in pain, corrupted after years of serving the Legion:
Bound. Broken. Eons of existence, knowing only pain. A shattered soul, fueling infinite evil. The master beckons. Rise... Rise! Begin the end of all things.
At one point in the fight, all the players die via the
Жатва душ
ability, but the remaining Titans save and empower us in the final phase. Argus drops
special trinkets
which have additional effects with a type of "Pantheon" buff.
Upon defeating Argus on Heroic difficulty or higher, players can turn in the quest
Кровь титана
for the
Кристалл призыва Кирин-Тора
mount. Here we learn of the immense power of Argus' blood, and how Azeroth's blood in the wrong hands would prove to be a disaster.
This mere drop of Argus' blood surges with incredible power, the might of a titan.
if the blood of Azeroth also proves to be a source of such strength, those who seek to rule this world will stop at nothing to possess it. The days ahead may be dark indeed.
Khadgar also describes a
wound in Silithus
rent by Sargeras--Silithus of course the location of the Old God
К'Тун
. Between the wound in Azeroth, the
datamined armor with tentacles
, and Alleria's vision of serving N'Zoth, could a return to protecting Azeroth from the Old Gods be in a future expansion?
N'zoth and Azeroth's Final Destiny
Upon defeating Argus on Heroic or higher difficulty, Illidan sends
three messages
, one to Malfurion, one to Tyrande, and one to the player. When Tyrande reads the message she replies it with
In my lifetime, I have twice witness a sundering of the world. Mother moon, I pray I do not see a third.
Piecing together that with the Il'gynoth quote already mentioned above:
At the hour of her third death, she will usher in our coming.
We could have a hint about the future of the Titan Soul in Azeroth. With the wound caused by Sargeras in Silithus, Azeroth's blood could be used by the followers of N'zoth to acquire the power necessary to finally release the Old God into our world.
The blood afterwards could also be used as a shortcut to the Titan Soul to finally corrupt it (Azeroth was always referred by Magni as 'her' or 'she'), causing a possible third Sundering to the planet, or her third 'death'.
