Argus is a planet filled with deep sadness and epic questlines--but there are also many fun pop culture references! TradeChat explains all the hidden references in Argus in her latest video. If you want to learn more about any reference, check out her written article and compiled links below!
Patch 7.3 would be nothing if not for Argus, so kicking off the video with the possible inspirations for the planet’s namesake seems appropriate.
Based on the many Star Trek references peppered throughout WoW, it’s clear someone at Blizzard is a fan of the series. Patch 7.3 is no exception, with the name of the planet Argus possibly drawing inspiration from it...
Argus X
was an uninhabited planet in the Star Trek universe which was mentioned in the Original Series episode titled “
Obsession
.”
In addition to the planet, Argus X, Star Trek also used the planet’s moniker in the Next Generation episode titled “The Nth Degree.” This time, it is used in the name of a subspace telescope called the “
Argus Array
.”
Surprisingly, the Argus Array is located at the edge of Federation Space, three light years from the Cardassian territory and not in the Argus Sector of space.
Perhaps it wasn’t Star Trek that was the inspiration for the planet’s name, Argus. Maybe instead it was DC Universe’s federal agency, the
Advanced Research Group Uniting Superhumans
...or ARGUS for short. I mean, it could be argued our being on Argus is a matter of homeland security!
Or the name “Argus” could be paying homage to one of the many video games which prominently featured it. Like, the Armed Guardian Services in
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell
. Or maybe Argus, king of Edenia in
Mortal Kombat Armageddon
...or the 1986 Nintendo Famicom shoot’em up game titled
Argus
.
It could be any these things...or maybe Argus is just a really cool word and the aforementioned examples are irrelevant. Let’s leave this one alone and move onto some more cut and dry pop culture nods in 7.3.
실그린
on the Vindicaar makes a less than subtle nod to One Punch Man when he says: “I do hope that Arluelle is keeping up her lessons. I gave her a small list of exercises to do everyday. Interested? It's quite simple. One hundred push ups. One hundred sit ups. One hundred squats. A ten thousand, nine hundred thirty-six yard run."
The achievement,
is very likely a nod to the iconic quote from Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove.
The achievement,
was likely named by a 90s hip hop fan, since it shares a name with the 1992’s chart topping single & album by Eric B & Rakim .
We interrupt your regular broadcast for rapid fire Dadghar jokes:
예언자를 찾아라
공개 작전
벌레광이야 뭐야
지옥사냥개 너무 무섭개
포탈 컴뱃
The achievement,
shares its name with the award winning Denzel Washington film:
수정 요법
is a quest in Krokuun, and also the name of an American electronic music duo.
The Crystal Method
has put out 5 studio albums and appeared on dozens of video game and movie soundtracks during their nearly 25 year career.
Terminus is a massive port for Legion ships in the Antoran Wastes on Argus…it’s also the name of an apparent safehaven in the Walking Dead universe, as well an achievement in
Halo 4
, a
super-villain
in the Marvel universe, in addition to many other video games, literary works, and even a Roman god. To be honest, this may be another Argus situation...unsure if cool reference or just
cool word
....
is an obvious reference to turn of the millenia earworm by the Baha Men:
그의 이름은 카자두움
is a quest on Mac’Aree and also a Lord of the Rings reference to Khazas-dum, the underground mine also called
Moria, in Middle Earth
.
The next few references are more like referenception. They are Warcraft references in Warcraft.
in Mac’Aree is named after Jeremey Feasel, of the WoW team, better known as
Muffinus
.
The Shrine of the Great Warrior in the
Krokul Lore Museum
is referencing
Broxigar
, the only mortal to ever have wounded the titan, Sargeras.
After years and years of being told “You are NOT prepared” 7.3 brought us the achievement
...feelsgoodman.
And to finish up the video, last but certainly not least, my favorite pop culture easter egg, or rather, easter eggS plural, in 7.3 is the quest chain….
This seems like an obvious Duke Nukem reference, but as
wowhead user Kennox
points out, it is actually a reference to the 1988 movie titled They Live.
And that’s it for my list of 7.3 pop culture references. Which one was your favorite? Did you catch one that I missed? Let me know in the comment section below!
