Hey everyone, and welcome to another bit of WoW History! Every week, we look down at important events that happened in WoW (or Blizzard!) for that week.
News this week includes the release of WoW Token, Reaper of Souls going live, and the first incarnation of the WoW Armory!
Shall we begin?
2015
March 2nd, 2015
On this day, Blizzard introduced the
WoW Token
! WoW Token allows you to buy game time with in-game gold - provided you can farm enough gold!
Players are able to buy WoW Tokens with real money and sell them at the auction house for gold through a dedicated section of the Auction House. WoW Tokens, once bought, cannot be traded - You can only either use them or sell them for gold on the Auction House. With the dedicated section in the Auction House, buying WoW Tokens is automated - There is no bidding or wait time involved like it would in a normal auction.
Sometime later, WoW Tokens were extended to also
provide you with Battle.net Balance
. You can choose between either a month of game time or $15 in Battle.net balance, allowing you to buy things from other Blizzard games. Tokens do not expire so you can also buy as many as you can and use them when necessary.
Back when the WoW Token system was announced, gold expert
Elvine
wrote a piece for us, talking about
his thoughts on WoW Tokens
.

Diablo III
saw the release of its first expansion,
Reaper of Souls
! Reaper of Souls made many changes to how Diablo III is played, adding many new modes and quality of life updates. Highlights of features included on launch are:
New Campaign Chapter - Act V:
This new chapter illustrates the effort against
Malthael
, former Archangel of Wisdom, now embodying the Aspect of Death. Facing foes like Adria and her newfound blood magic, the chapter ends with Malthael being ultimately slain by the Nephalem and the destruction of the Black Soulstone, which means Diablo was once free again.
Adventure Mode:
This new game mode is intended to act as Diablo III's endgame. Engage in bounties to obtain exclusive rewards and unlock Nephalem Rifts, fast and randomized dungeons for you or your group to crawl through. You unlock Adventure Mode by completing Reaper of Souls' story mode on Act V at least once.
The Mystic:
A new way to customize your gear, Myriam the Mystic can either reroll a specific stat on your equipment or change your gear's appearance, similar to transmogrification in WoW.
New Difficulty Settings:
Reaper of Souls made subtle changes on how difficulty works. Monsters now always scale to your level regardless of what difficulty you're in. Higher difficulties will now award better loot.
On Reaper of Souls' launch, difficulties were
Normal
,
Hard
,
Expert
,
Master
and
Torment
. Torment has since been expanded, going all the way to
Torment XIII
!
Loot 2.0:
Loot has been revamped to accommodate the removal of the Real Money Auction House. Loot will drop less often, but it will be smarter and more tailored towards what class you're currently playing.

On this day, we learned that the process to obtain the
Rênes de sabre-de-givre de Berceau-de-l'Hiver
would change on Patch 4.1! Before this, you were required to hit Exalted with the
Éleveurs de sabres-d'hiver
faction, which only had 3 quests that had to be repeated all the way to exalted.
Quests
Provisions de sabres-de-givre
and
L'incursion des Tombe-hiver
gave 50 reputation (later buffed to 250 reputation), and
Géants déchaînés
gave 75 reputation (later buffed to 350 reputation).
With the 4.1 Changes, after the introductory quest
Attrapez-les jeunes !
, you now need to obtain 20
Moustache de bébé de Berceau-de-l'Hiver
for the quest
Ils grandissent si vite
, which can only be obtained with dailies done with your
Bébé de Berceau-de-l'Hiver
in Winterspring. This changed the Winterspring Frostsaber grind to be a 20-day daily grind, similar to the
Sifflet du ravasaure peau-de-venin
, added to Horde players in WotLK.

WoW Armory enters its beta stage! The very first incarnation of the WoW Armory was quite simple, but still showed a lot of information. Information on its first version included:
Character Profiles:
Equipment, stats, skills and reputation levels were all viewable on the Armory's first version. All characters from all realms were listed, as long as they are level 10 or above.
Guild Profiles:
Guild information such as guild roster and a statistical breakdown of guild levels and races.
Arena Team Profiles and Ladder:
You could also check out your arena team, its rating and last few games, and the Arena ladder, where you could see who are the top teams for your battlegroup.
You can check out this version of the archived WoW website for the news.

I remember I was not very excited when D3 was first released, I had it gifted to me. By the time Reaper of Souls was released, I was a fan! I wish I had more time to play through seasons or even some Diablo II action. I remember also being a bit pissed off at the Winterspring Frostsaber changes, as I had achieved mine the old way with that endless grind, but later understood as those grinds were really painful!
