World Ranking Russian raid guild
Exorsus
has announced their retirement from competitive raiding, switching to an evening two day a week raid format. Best known for achieving top 10 world rankings in nearly every tier since Cataclysm, and the extensively used
Exorsus Raid Tools addon
, the Russian guild has been at the forefront of competitive raiding for almost a decade.
While not something we normally report on, it sparks an interesting discussion as World of Warcraft continues to get older, and players age along with it. All progression-oriented guilds must recruit in order to remain competitive, though not all change their roster at the same pace - some guilds have seen large portions of their team change between tiers or expansions, but others have remained tight knit for several years. There are several reasons for that, with the argument that
less guild and recruitment options
forces non-English or Chinese monolingual players to band together, but the result is that they have remained together so long they became more than teammates, and for many players like that, WoW is simply a familiar backdrop in which they enjoy spending time with one another.
It's easy to be cynical and blame these kinds of guild changes on dissatisfaction with the game, and in some cases that might be true, though even if you continue to enjoy World of Warcraft five, ten, or fifteen years later, it's not always reasonable to believe that you'll be able to make the same amount of time for it. Players get older, have families, children, pursue higher education, careers, or even other forms of entertainment which don't always allow dedicating as much time to a single game. Many guilds simply call it quits - wishing their players the best in finding new homes - but Exorsus has chosen to remain whole and continue to enjoy the game which brought them together in the first place, while still allowing time for other pursuits. Some players may move on, but old friends are just as likely to return, finding the lighter schedule easier to commit to. In this sense, they've become a true community, rather than just a high ranking raid guild.
Exorsus has a long and respectable career as one of the top competitive raid guilds in the world, but what their message makes clear is that it isn't just about the competition for them. Turns out maybe the treasures really were the friends they made along the way.
Their videos were also pretty epic too!
