On the most recent PTR build,
Darkshore has been revamped to accommodate its new status as a Warfront zone
. One of the changes in Darkshore was the inclusion of many new rare NPCs that drop cosmetic items such as pets, mounts or toys.
Some of those new rares are new versions of NPCs that players have either personally interacted with while questing in Darkshore, or a result of the many changes the zone went through over the years. In this article, we highlight each of those rares with their past locations and drops!
Past NPCs as Darkshore Rares
Some of the new rares in Darkshore have appeared or been mentioned in one way or another in the zone. These are the following rares:
Aman
Aman
is a titan watcher that appeared in two zones before showing up as a rare in the new Darkshore:
During Classic and through expansions till the end of Wrath of the Lich King, Aman would appear in Wetlands after the quest
Les absences du Prospecteur
, warning us about the dangers of digging too deep into the past.
After the Cataclysm, he now appears in Darkshore during the quest
Le terminal des titans
. He appears and surveys Remtravel's Excavation, mentioning that the site is compromised.
Aman appears both times talking about the dangers of digging in too deep into Azeroth's past. Remtravel's Excavation, his site in Darkshore, was flooded and overtaken by murlocs of the Greymist tribe after the Cataclysm, but in Darkshore's revamp, the area is drained out. Aman is displayed killing Greymist murlocs around him, which would signal the site's corruption was caused by the murlocs.
Athrikus Narassin
Athrikus Narassin
was a highborne who prided himself in his many magical artifacts he obtained or created, and one of Queen Azshara's most faithful servants. Athrikus was personally chosen by Queen Azshara to govern the cities of Bashal'Aran and Ameth'Aran 10,000 years ago. Although Athrikus was good with his duties, he would stay hidden inside the Tower of Althalaxx most of his days.
Narassin was near the Well of Eternity when it exploded during the War of the Ancients. The blast from the explosion made him lose all his precious items, scattered across Kalimdor. However, he was augmented with the energies of the well, granting him the ability to sap the energy of other magi to augment his own powers. After this, he tricked the elves of the now-destroyed Ameth'Aran into safety, only to trap them within soul gems to slowly drain their energies.
During Classic, the questline that started with
La Tour d'Althalaxx
dug deep within the story of Athrikus Narassin and his soul gems, leading to eventually steal his remaining soul gems and leaving the Highborne vulnerable. Players finished Narassin off, and the Tower of Althalaxx was left abandoned until it crumbled during the Cataclysm. During the quest
Le pillage d'Althalaxx
, it is discovered that Forsaken looters are attempting to scrounge the ruins for Narassin's research, and although the Highborne is long dead, the research would be very damaging provided it falls in the wrong hands.
In the new Darkshore, the Horde activity near the ruined tower drove many spirits to madness, including Narassin himself, now showing up as a rare. He has a chance to drop the toy
Gemme d’âme de Narassin
, which will trap fallen souls into his soul gem.
Glrglrr
Glrglrr
is the chieftain of the Greymist tribe of murlocs, which show up all over the coast of Darkshore. Although Glrglrr did not make an appearance in-game before 8.1, the Greymist murlocs already caused troubles during questlines from Classic. On the quest
On recherche : Fondeboue !
, it is mentioned that
Fondeboue
, one of the members of the tribe, was responsible for the death of at least one Sentinel, and sinking at least two cargo ships from Darnassus.
Greymist murlocs also appear around
Athrikus Narassin
, both alive and killed by the watcher, presumably the reason as to why Remtravel's Excavation is considered corrupted by him.
Gren Tornfur
Gren Poil-Semé
is one of the leaders of the Blackwood furbolg, a tribe that used to live around Darkshore. During Classic, the Blackwood furbolg were being slowly corrupted by the satyr hailing from Felwood, but were purified by players during the quest
La corruption des Noirbois
. In Cataclysm, the Blackwood tribe offers to help Malfurion cleanse Darkshore of Deathwing's passage in exchange for helping them against the Fire elementals summoned by the Twilight's Hammer, on the quest
Assistance mutuelle
. Gren Tornfur himself gives you the quest
Les braseros jadefeu
, to help cleanse off potential corruption coming from Felwood.
The Blackwood furbolg became directly affected by the War of the Thorns. The Horde seized Blackwood Hold in
Passation de pouvoir
, while the Alliance rescued the Blackwood leaders, including Tornfur, in
Furbolgs enragés
. In the new Darkshore, the Horde won the dispute by taking over Blackwood Hold and turning it into the settlement of Kor'gar. It was discovered that the other furbolg leaders were killed by the Horde, leaving only Tornfur alive, who ended up once again corrupted and is now killable as a rare. Gren Tornfur drops the
Grenade de peste décontaminée
, which covers a target in an innate version of the undeath blight.
Ivus the Forest Lord
Ivus le Seigneur de la forêt
was a massive Ancient of War that would help the Alliance in Alterac Valley, during Classic WoW. By turning in enough
Cristal de tempête
s to
Archidruidesse Ranfarouche
in Dun Baldar, she would call in her druids to summon Ivus the Forest Lord, that would assault the Frostwolf Keep. Although Ivus is still summonable in recent iterations on AV, changes like reinforcements, coupled with the huge effort required to summon Ivus makes the ancient a very rare sight nowadays.
Ivus is summoned in Darkshore to help on the offensive against the Horde, but eventually ends up corrupted. Alliance ends up being forced to put an end on his corrupted form,
Ivus le Corrompu
. In both his forms, Ivus serves as the newest World Boss, accessible to the faction currently in control of the Darkshore warfront.
Onu
Onu
is an Ancient of Lore that serves as a questgiver for the Alliance in Darkshore. Pre-Cataclysm, Onu would guide players to questlines in the Master's Glaive, but his usefulness was reduced in the Cataclysm. In the War of the Thorns, Onu works as a questgiver through the Alliance questline, focusing his efforts on helping the furbolgs of Blackwood Hold (
L’éveil d’une nouvelle force
).
Onu is friendly to Alliance players, and only Horde players can kill him. He is currently available on the Alliance phase on the 8.1 PTR, but this could change. Onu drops the
Tréant semperardent
Battle Pet. Alliance players can get the same drop from
Zim'kaga
.
Soggoth the Slitherer
Soggoth le Rampant
was one of the heralds of the Old Gods. He was defeated long ago by 20 stone giants, with only one stone giant surviving the battle. The stone giant Kronn, the largest of them, allowed himself to be entangled by Soggoth's tendrils long enough to thrust his mighty sword into Soggoth's skull. For most of WoW's history, Soggoth's skeleton and Kronn's sword could be seen by the Master's Glaive.
During Cataclysm, the Twlight's Hammer attempted to revive Soggoth, and Alliance adventurers killed his avatar on
La bataille de Sombrivage
. In the new Darkshore, he is revived once more - although in a weakened state. However, he is still a rare elite, even on his weakened state. Soggoth drops the
Gelée spongieuse violette
, which teaches you the
Méduse du Vide
Battle Pet.
Darkshore Elementals
Like in Arathi Highlands, Darkshore also has elementals serving as rare elites. While you can find said elementals in Arathi on the circles of binding scattered around the zone, in Darkshore, they're closed to areas that were majorly affected by the Cataclysm, summoned by the Twilight's Hammer.
Note: The Earth Elemental rare,
Granokk
, is not being mentioned in this article as he is currently glitched on the 8.1 PTR, falling off the world when spawning.
Conflagros
Conflagrus
is located by the Blazing Strand, an area directly charred by Deathwing's passage. During the War of the Thorns, the Bilgewater Goblins used the Blazing Strand as a base of operations, but the area was since taken by the Twilight's Hammer. Conflagros drops
Os cliquetants
, which teaches you the
Détective Ray
Battle Pet.
Cyclarus
Cyclarus
is located in the heart of Darkshore, by the Eye of the Vortex. The Eye of the Vortex was the epicenter of the storm threatening to tear Darkshore apart, and the cyclone located there was gone by the time of the War of the Thorns. Cyclarus drops the
Bourrasque de Cyclarus
Battle Pet.
Hydrath
Hydrath
is located by the Maw of the Void, the massive whirlpool in northern Darkshore. Hydrath drops
Essence d’Hydrath en bouteille
, which teaches you the
Goutte d'Hydrath
Battle Pet.
