Alliance Introduction
The Alliance questline starts in Mezzamere, Nazjatar, with
Paiement en nature
. Jaina tells you that Anduin has personally summoned you to Stormwind Keep, and considering the reports of Azshara's presence in Nazjatar, having you summoned back means this is really important. In Stormwind Keep, the player reunites with Anduin, Jaina and Shaw, with Shaw announcing that Sylvanas called in for Baine's execution. As they plan how to infiltrate Orgrimmar, Jaina says she will do it to pay the debt she owes to Baine, for bringing Derek back to her.
Anduin Wrynn: Jaina, <player>. We are faced with a dire situation.
Master Mathias Shaw: Our spies report that the Banshee has ordered the execution of Baine Bloodhoof.
Anduin Wrynn: We must rescue him at once. I know what I ask of you. To infiltrate Orgrimmar--
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: I will do it.
Master Mathias Shaw: Are you certain? It's an immense risk.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Baine defied his warchief by returning Derek to us. To me. He's risked more than anyone.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: If Baine dies, we might lose our last hope of bringing this war to a peaceful end. And peace is worth the risk.
Anduin Wrynn: Thank you, Jaina. There isn't much time, so make haste. May the Light be with you all.
Anduin then sends you to rescue Baine in
Stay of Execution
, mentioning that ever since he was a child, Baine taught him that there was honor in the Horde, and saving Baine may be the only way to restore that honor.
Horde Introduction
The Horde questline starts in Newhome, Nazjatar, with
Visions menaçantes
- Lor'themar tells you he received a vision from Spiritwalker Ussoh about Baine. Ussoh then appears and tells you about the vision, which was of Baine being executed by Sylvanas!
Spiritwalker Ussoh: A figure emerged from the shadows. Angry. Vengeful. The warchief.
Spiritwalker Ussoh: She spoke but a word, and Baine's life... flickered out.
Spiritwalker Ussoh: The spirits whisper that this vision will come to pass before the next sunrise.
Lor'themar Theron: By the Sunwell... We have to stop this!
Lor'themar announces he's no longer aligned with Sylvanas, then sends you to Orgrimmar to look for allies in the Cleft of Shadows in
De vieux alliés
. In the rebel version of the questline, you go there and find... Thrall and Saurfang! If you're loyal to Sylvanas, you will receive another version of the quest,
De vieux alliés
, which has you reporting Lor'themar's insolence to Nathanos before heading to the Cleft of Shadows.
Lor'themar Theron: Baine Bloodhoof represents all that is best in the Horde. We cannot stand by and let his light be snuffed out.
Lor'themar Theron: But know this: When the warchief learns of our defiance, her wrath will be swift... and terrible.
Lor'themar Theron: In the end, we all must choose our path. And that choice will have consequences.
---
If you're a Sylvanas Loyalist, after reporting to Nathanos:
Nathanos Blightcaller: So Lor'themar shows his true colors at last.
Nathanos Blightcaller: A pity he has sided with Baine, but I am not entirely surprised. This is not his first betrayal.
Nathanos Blightcaller: Play along for now. I'll send word ahead. These traitors are in for a surprise once they reach Bloodhoof.
After meeting Thrall in the Cleft of Shadows, you will then get the quest
Stay of Execution
, starting the Baine rescue scenario in the underground portions of Orgrimmar.
Stay of Execution Scenario
Thrall and Saurfang lead the scenario for Horde players, and Shaw and Jaina, for Alliance. Thrall and Saurfang enter from the front gates of the Underhold, being instantly recognized by the Forsaken guards, while Shaw and Jaina have a more subtle approach by entering a locked-off room (originally Malkorok's room in Siege of Orgrimmar) and dealing with Goblins and their Azerite creations.
Horde:
Thrall: I have not walked these halls since we faced Garrosh.
Varok Saurfang: Vol'jin reopened these halls to provide shelter when the Legion invaded.
Varok Saurfang: Now Sylvanas uses them to train her elite soldiers and build her Azerite weapons.
Underhold Elite Guard: Halt! This area is off limits!
Thrall: Stay your hand. We're only here to--
Underhold Elite Guard: That's Saurfang! Kill the traitors!
---
Alliance:
Master Mathias Shaw: She's holding Baine in the halls deep beneath Orgrimmar. This way.
Off-Duty Mech Jockey: I promise you're gonna love this surprise, pookie!
Master Mathias Shaw: Just need a moment to get this gate open.
Off-Duty Mech Jockey: Aw, I always love your surprises, honey bun.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Someone's on the other side.
Off-Duty Mech Jockey: What the-- Who are these clowns?
Off-Duty Mech Jockey: The Alliance! Awwww... this ain't gonna be good!
Master Mathias Shaw: They'll sound the alarm when they thaw.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Baine might not have that long. Come on!
Thrall and Saurfang then use Rokhan's totem to stealth past the Forsaken guards and using the player to provide a distraction from Sylvanas' Dark Rangers, while Shaw and Jaina traverse a Goblin corridor full of lights and Azerite creations. Both parties eventually meet and cement an unlikely alliance to save Baine. This union is not without reservations through, with accusations thrown around by both parties. As they get past Sylvanas' Dark Ranger defenses, they reach Baine's location!
From this point on, the scenario is the same for both Horde and Alliance
.
Master Mathias Shaw: Keep a close eye on them, <player>.
Varok Saurfang: Stay on your guard, <player>.
Varok Saurfang: I did not expect the Alliance to be here.
Master Mathias Shaw: Not the first time we've had to move against a corrupt warchief.
Varok Saurfang: Or a sovereign king. Slain in his own home.
Master Mathias Shaw: A home that still stands. Can you say the same for Teldrassil?
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Enough! We aren't here to fight each other.
Thrall: Stay focused. Baine's life is all that matters right now.
---
Master Mathias Shaw: Looks like Baine is being held just ahead.
Varok Saurfang: It seems we must get past her first.
As they approach Baine, Jaina notices crystals around Baine's prison, impeding her to teleport everyone out. The spell is maintained by Magister Hathorel of the Sunreavers, who has broadcast text attacking Jaina, but it is currently not in-game. As Baine is rescued, the Horde and the Alliance are teleported back to their home bases in Nazjatar, and both parties focus on their efforts against Azshara, as she would want them divided.
We datamined broadcast texts during this part of the scenario
, as players interact with the Sunreavers, but these were not present during the questline, likely not implemented yet.
If you're a Sylvanas loyalist, you will receive an additional dialogue after reporting once more to Nathanos, telling you to continue working with the traitors and trust on Sylvanas' plans.
Alliance:
Genn Greymane: Good to have you back, Jaina. Why did King Anduin summon you?
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Sylvanas ordered the execution of Baine Bloodhoof. Anduin sent us into Orgrimmar to rescue them.
Genn Greymane: You risked your lives to save a leader of the Horde?!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: After what he did for Derek, I felt I owed him a debt. We received some unexpected help from Saurfang... and Thrall.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: We had a common enemy. Sylvanas wanted us at each other's throats. Perhaps that's what Azshara wants, too.
Genn Greymane: Hold on... are you suggesting we lay down our arms and fight beside them? After all they've done?!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: No. Merely that we direct our efforts against Azshara instead of the Horde. That could buy time for Saurfang's rebellion to take root.
Genn Greymane: Very well. We will focus on defeating the naga queen. But if the Horde turns against us, they will answer for it.
---
Horde:
Lor'themar Theron: Proudmoore and Shaw risked their lives to rescue Baine? Unexpected.
First Arcanist Thalyssra: Is it? Not long ago, Alliance and Horde fought together to liberate Suramar from the Legion.
Lor'themar Theron: Cooperation between our sides has been the exception, not the rule. More often, we are at each other's throats.
First Arcanist Thalyssra: The animosity only benefits Azshara. Her power is considerable. Divided, we are no match for her--or the master she serves.
Lor'themar Theron: Sylvanas has the loyalty of the people. So long as she is warchief, this war will rage within their hearts. We cannot stop it.
First Arcanist Thalyssra: Perhaps we do not need to. It might be enough to direct our attacks against Azshara rather than the Alliance.
Lor'themar Theron: That plan would infuriate Blightcaller... which makes me like it all the more. Hmm... "It stops when you turn from one another and walk away..."
First Arcanist Thalyssra: What was that?
Lor'themar Theron: A lesson once taught to Jaina Proudmoore and me. Your counsel is wise, Thalyssra. Our focus must be on ending Azshara's reign.
Lor'themar Theron: But if the Alliance undermines our efforts, the flames of war will rise once again.
---
If you're loyal to Sylvanas, after reporting to Nathanos once more:
Nathanos Blightcaller: Saurfang, Thrall, the Alliance... it is vexing to allow our quarry to believe they escaped us. But we must trust in the warchief's plan.
Nathanos Blightcaller: Soon your loyalty will face an even greater test. I do hope you prove worthy of the Dark Lady's favor.
Nathanos Blightcaller: I have been recalled to Orgrimmar. Remain in Nazjatar. Keep playing along with these traitorous vipers... until you are summoned.
Learning to Walk Away
At the end of the Stay of Execution questline on Horde side, Lor'themar mentions a lesson both him and Jaina learned in the past: "It stops when you turn from one another and walk away". This is a callback to the Mists of Pandaria quest
La chute de Shan Bu
/
La chute de Shan Bu
, one of the steps that used to be required to unlock portions of the Isle of Thunder. At the end of the quest, Jaina and Lor'themar met with animosity, as Jaina had recently purged the Sunreavers from Dalaran. As they are about to fight, the leader of the Shado-Pan, Taran Zhu, intervenes and tells them to walk away from conflict and end the cycle of hatred. Seems like the lesson stuck on this day!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Hand over the Archmage and I may yet allow you to walk out of here, Lor'themar.
Lor'themar Theron: Proudmoore! You will release my people from the Violet Hold, or I will cut you down myself!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Your people are legitimate prisoners of war. They orchestrated an attack on Darnassus from MY city-
Lor'themar Theron: The Sunreavers knew NOTHING of Garrosh's raid on Darnassus!
Taran Zhu: ENOUGH!! There will be no more bloodshed today.
Taran Zhu: I see now why your Alliance and Horde cannot stop fighting.
Taran Zhu: Every reprisal is itself an act of aggression, and every act of aggression triggers immediate reprisal.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: They have undermined EVERY attempt at peace!
Lor'themar Theron: I must protect my sovereign people.
Taran Zhu: SILENCE! YOU must break the cycle.
Taran Zhu: It ends TODAY. Here. The cycle ends when you, Regent Lord, and you, Lady Proudmoore, turn from one another. And walk. Away.
