Blizzard has announced that they are working on a way to make the original starter gear available to players who want to obtain them, as the original starter gear is being replaced in Patch 9.1.5.
Character Starter Gear Looks Going Away
World of Warcraft
content Patch 9.1.5 will be live in 12 days, on November 2nd, 2021. This Patch will be introducing, among other things,
new starting gear for new characters
. This introduces a little problem for Transmog Collectors. Starting gear is Common, or white gear. White gear cannot be transmogged at this point, so starting sets are not added to the Wardrobe. For many race/class combinations, this isn't an issue since the starting set look can be acquired from other gear in the game, but for some, these sets are unique and Blizzard has announced that they are working on a way to make these older starter pieces available in the future.
Please don’t worry that any original starter gear might go away forever or become very rare. We’re working on making all of those various older starter pieces available to players who want to obtain them.
However, there's been no mention of when. and keyboardturn has
pointed out on Twitter
which pieces of starter gear have unique appearances, creating a
spreadsheet
showing exactly what will be lost until Blizzard adds in these pieces again. If you want to, you may want to pick up these right now if you care about such things, and don't want to wait.
Here is an example. First, we have a brand new undead priest on live modeling the
Robe de néophyte
. Second, a brand new undead priest on the PTR is wearing
Robe de prêtre
.
There is no other item that shares a look with
Robe de néophyte
so in order to have that look guaranteed available to you after Patch 9.1.5 launches, you will need to have made an undead priest and have kept that item. The class/race items that are affected by this, according to keyboardturn's handy spreadsheet, are the following:
Druid
Night Elf
Tauren or Troll
Hunter
Human, Dwarf, Gnome, Night Elf, or Undead
Draenei
Orc, Troll, or Tauren
Blood Elf
Mage
Human, Dwarf, or Gnome
Night Elf
Draenei
Orc or Troll
Undead
Blood Elf
Paladin
Human or Dwarf
Draenei
Tauren
Blood Elf
Priest
Human, Dwarf, or Gnome
Night Elf
Draenei
Undead
Tauren or Troll
Blood Elf
Rogue
Human, Dwarf, Gnome, Night Elf, or Undead
Orc or Troll
Blood Elf
Shaman
Dwarf
Draenei
Orc, Troll, or Tauren
Warlock
Human, Dwarf, or Gnome
Orc or Troll
Undead
Blood Elf
Warrior
Human, Dwarf, Gnome, or Undead
Night Elf
Draenei
Orc, Troll, or Tauren
Blood Elf
Since, as mentioned, white gear cannot currently be transmogged, if you want to guarantee you have these items, you will need to create a character of the appropriate race/class before November 2nd. If you don't want to keep these new characters, you will need to mail the items in question - shirt or robe, boots, pants, and possibly weapon - to a character you plan to keep who can store these for you. These items are not currently Soulbound, so you should be able to mail, store, trade, and sell them as you wish.
