European Championship Finals
Hello fellow World of Warcraft esports fans! My name is Dderserei and I'm the main contributer to the
World of Warcraft Liquipedia site
. I will be bringing you recaps of World of Warcraft Arena tournaments, with plenty of statistics and a summary of the action. Today I will be examining the European Championship Finals. For an explanation of the Road to BlizzCon and to watch previous tournaments, go to
Blizzard's Esports Site
. The bracket for this tournament can be found
here
, complete with team compositions, map selections and other useful information.
The Tournament
The European Championship Finals were held at Gamescom in Cologne this year. Teams qualified for this tournament by earning points in the Arena Cups and community tournaments. The 12 teams with the most points were eligible to compete. The seeding was based on the placing of each team on the qualification points leaderboard. The top seed faced the 12th seed first, the second faced the 11th, and so on. The top four teams qualified to compete at the Arena World Championship at BlizzCon. The teams who qualified were Grmbl (12th seed), Emo (8th seed), ABC (6th seed) and Method Triforce (2nd seed).
Trials and Triumps
Seeding Isn't Everything
Rockets Esports went into the European Championship Finals as the top seed after winning Arena Cups 2 and 5. Their first opponents, Grmbl, placed second in the
Rallying Cry
tournament and were only eligible to attend this tournament after another team was unable to. Rockets Esports were the clear favourites going into the series, but in all matches that they played their main composition (RMP*) they were unable to defeat the lowest seeded team, losing the series 2-3 to Grmbl's Holy Priest, Windwalker Monk and Frost Death Knight. Interestingly, in the matches that Rockets Esports won against Grmbl, their composition was Stealth Cleave** rather than the RMP that had earned them victory so many times throughout the Arena Cups. Rockets Esports failed to reach the playoffs after being eliminated from the tournament by Emo.
*Rogue, Mage, Priest.
**Feral Druid, Rogue, Healer.
Reigning Champions Fall
Northern Gaming Blue won two of their three matches during the group stage, defeating Blind Faith and knocking Making a Movie out of the tournament. They were defeated by Emo's double melee compositions however, a weakness that would show itself again in the playoffs. They faced Method Triforce, three of whom composed the team of Toxic Youth who they met in the Grand Final of the European Regional Championship last year. Northern Gaming Blue played Discipline Priest, Subtlety Rogue and Frost Mage for all five matches while Method Triforce alternated between TSG*** and Restoration Druid, Windwalker Monk and Unholy Death Knight. The matches were short, with an average match time of 2 minutes and 47 seconds. Unlike last year, Method Triforce came out on top, winning the series 2-3 and eliminating a team that many assumed would make it to BlizzCon.
***TSG stands for Teh Super Gosus, the name of the team that popularised the composition. The composition itself is Warrior, Death Knight, Healer; traditionally a Holy Paladin.
Enjoying Legion?
Enjoy Legion proved themselves to be a strong team during the Arena Cups, claiming Cup #1 with a win rate of 78.3% and finishing as the third seed for the European Championship Finals. The team defeated Free Therapy twice to reach the playoffs where they faced Emo, the eighth seed in the tournament. Emo's TSG proved too strong for Enjoy Legion's Thunder Cleave****, and they were knocked out of the tournament 3-1.
****Restoration Druid, Arms Warrior, Elemental Shaman.
Pepe Found Victory!
With their plush Pepes in tow, Grmbl were the first team to qualify for the Arena World Championship. This 12th seed team defeated Rockets Esports' and Making a Movie's RMP teams with their Holy Priest, Windwalker Monk and Death Knight. They were not as successful in the playoffs but they did take the eventual winners of the tournament to a fifth series, defeating Method Triforce's TSG twice with a Holy Paladin, Windwalker Monk and Unholy Death Knight.

ABC were one match away from qualifying for the Arena World Championship last year. This year they reached the Semi Finals straight from the Group Stage, defeating Managers and Enjoy Legion to secure their place. In the playoffs, they defeated Emo's TSG with their Assassination and Arcane RMP, placing them in the Grand Final against Method Triforce.

Grand Final – ABC vs Method Triforce
Despite their success against most other double melee compositions in the tournament, ABC struggled against Method Triforce. ABC met Method Triforce's TSG with their own TSG as well as their RMP and a Restoration Shaman, Arms Warrior and Havoc Demon Hunter composition. After losing to the Demon Hunter composition twice in a row, Method Triforce played a different composition in the seventh and final match: Restoration Shaman, Arms Warrior and Retribution Paladin. They were victorious, winning the European Championship Finals and securing their place as the top seed from Europe going into the Arena World Championship at BlizzCon. Fabss now has three Regional Championship wins and three Arena World Championship wins, and Boetar and Swapxy both have two of each.
