Disclaimer: This post contains plot spoilers regarding the new zone in Battle for Azeroth,
Drustvar
. If you don't want to get spoiled, don't read further!
Blizzard has been dropping hints towards Old Gods breaking out of their prison for a while now. From the
whispers of Xal'atath
, the Shadow Priest Artifact weapon,
Il'gynoth in the Emerald Nightmare
, to the more recent
visions of Ogmot the Mad
, after Sargeras struck Azeroth, we know for sure they are arriving.
In the Battle for Azeroth alpha, we got even more possible hints in the
Barrowknoll Cemetery
, located in
Drustvar
.
This was originally highlighted by french fansite
Mamytwink
, so we decided to do some exploring of our own!
Barrowknell Cemetery
The cemetery, kept by
, is where the inhabitants of Drustvar lay their loved ones, including a monument for those loved ones that were lost by the sea.
Barrowknoll Cemetery has a short questline that involves you gathering reagents to concoct a potion to commune with the dead residing there, and then aiding them with the demise of
Schwester Westwald
, one of the many witches of the Heartsbane Coven, a coven of witches seeking to take over Drustvar to ressurrect the former Drust king,
Gorak Tul
.
I See Dead People!
During the quest
Geister sehen
, you create a
Grabblütensalbe
, which gives you the ability to see and interact with the spirits residing in Barrowknoll Cemetery, via
. Usually you would start communing with the dead and complete the quests
Geister sehen
,
Eine geteilte Gruppe
and
Eine fehlt noch
.
Once you take the
Grabblütensalbe
, the graveyard immediatly becomes more "lively":
Aufgewühlter Geist
s,
Geisterkind
ren and
Geisterhafter Begleiter
start populating the cemetery, as well as two easter eggs:
Rudi
, presumable the deceased dog of Caretaker Allen, appears right next to him. A ghostly Pepe can also be seen hanging on top of one of the monuments there.
Ominous Whispers
However, things get interesting when you start killing the
Wütender Geist
s, they will sometimes start whispering you things. And those can be very... Interesting. Below we list each one of the whispers and speculate on what it could possibly mean.
Those whispers can appear at random whenever you kill a
Wütender Geist
.
Mysterious Whisper whispers: Her blood is making him stronger. Yours will, too.
Mysterious Whisper whispers: Night falls. Her song will end.
Mysterious Whisper whispers: Her whispers echo loudest of all.
Mysterious Whisper whispers: The cracks widen
These quotes can all be referred to Azeroth herself.
Azerite is the name given to the crystallized blood of Azeroth, which is both the reason the Horde and Alliance are starting the war again, and also powers this expansion's artifact, the
Herz von Azeroth
.
"Her song will end" might be for when Azeroth eventually emerges out of its shell, destroying the entire planet in the process.
Magni Bronzebart
is able to listen to Azeroth's whispers, and on the quest
Flüstern einer verängstigten Welt
, we know she has been whispering louder and louder, whispers of sorrow and fear.
The cracks widening might be a reference to the wound in Silithus, that is notably getting bigger and wider.
Mysterious Whisper whispers: She seeks that which must be earned by sacrifice.
This could be another reference to Azeroth, although it can be applied to both Jaina and Sylvanas. Jaina is willing to sacrifice everything for peace, and Sylvanas is willing to sacrifice everyone to guarantee the continued survival of the Forsaken. Ilgynoth has 2 quotes that could be a tie-in to this:
Il'gynoth whispers: At the hour of her third death, she ushers in our coming.
Il'gynoth whispers: Her heart is a crater, and we have filled it.
Mysterious Whisper whispers: The world will burn with the beauty that is to come.
This could be in reference to Jaina Proudmoore, that makes very fiery references in the
Battle for Azeroth Features Overview
trailer: "We've made kindling from our suffering... Stirred the embers of resentment... Just waiting for a single spark... To set the whole world aflame."
Mysterious Whisper whispers: The burning ones kept balance. Lost now... lost.
Likely a reference to the Burning Legion, ultimately defeated in Argus. Sargeras wanted to destroy all non-corrupted planets so that the Void Lords couldn't corrupt them.
Mysterious Whisper whispers: Their victory is closer than you know.
Mysterious Whisper whispers: Embrace your fate. All will drown.
Could possibly be a reference to Queen Azshara or even N'zoth. The former is slated to appear in Battle for Azeroth, and N'zoth is also heavily implied to make an appearance. Although with the connotation of "their" on "Their victory is closer than you know", this is more likely to be a reference to N'zoth.
Other quotes:
Mysterious Whisper whispers: We are the lucky ones. Not you. Not yet.
Mysterious Whisper whispers: I only wanted to help.
Mysterious Whisper whispers: Your pride is what led to all of this.
Sometimes when killing a
Wütender Geist
, a Ghostly Follower may appear.
These small girls will hang out with you for approximately a minute, and will whisper you different things. You will see one of the following emotes when they arrive:
You hear faint laughter.
You are being watched.
You feel eyes upon you.
Their whispers are much more ominous in nature, maybe because you actually have a spirit following you for this.
Ghostly Follower whispers: Beyond this small sea of stars there is only endless Darkness.
This could very likely be a reference to the prison where N'zoth is at. Both Il'gynoth and
Puzzlebox des Yogg-Saron
already mentioned the said prison before:
Il'gynoth whispers: To find him, drown yourself in the Circle of Stars.
Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron whispers: The stars sweep chill currents that make men shiver in the dark.
Ghostly Follower whispers: The Master waits for you to join him...
Ghostly Follower whispers: He is awake now. And he has noticed you.
Ghostly Follower whispers: You'll join us soon.
More possible references to N'zoth. As of Cataclysm, he has been dormant, and is rumored to have finally awakened in Legion. Both Xal'atath and
Puzzlebox des Yogg-Saron
make references to its stasis:
Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron whispers: In the sunken city, he lays dreaming.
Xal'atath whispers: The God of the Deep writhes in his prison, breaking free ever so slowly. You should hurry and defeat the fallen titan... there are greater battles yet to fight.
Ghostly Follower whispers: Has she betrayed you yet? She will...
Could possibly be another reference to Jaina or Sylvanas. Jaina has been absent for most of Legion, and although she shows up in both
Alliance
and
Horde
Battle for Azeroth starter scenarios, she has been noticeably darker.
Sylvanas has also been acting more erratic, with her focus on keeping the Forsaken alive.
Other quotes:
Ghostly Follower whispers: You will die alone.
Ghostly Follower whispers: I know the things you have done.
Ghostly Follower whispers: Tell my daddy I forgive him.
Possible Past References to Drustvar
Both the
Puzzlebox des Yogg-Saron
and
Xal'atoh, entweihtes Abbild von Blutschrei
have mentioned things about a dark forest.
Drustvar
is a zone filled with dark forests and a very gloomy atmosphere. Aided with the plot of the Drust attempting to regain power via Gorak Tul and the Heartsbane Coven, it may very well be the forest mentioned by those items.
Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron whispers: Look around. They will all betray you. Flee screaming into the black forest.
Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron whispers: The silent, sleeping, staring houses in the backwoods always dream. It would be merciful to tear them down.
Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron whispers: There is a little lamb lost in dark woods.
Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron whispers: The giant rook watches from the dead trees. Nothing breathes beneath his shadow.
Xal'atoh, Desecrated Image of Gorehowl whispers: When you walk through the Dark Forest, you will see.
