While Dragonflight is still fresh, we'd like to highlight some of the background stars of every expansion: addon authors! Addons have become a fundamental piece of WoW's ecosystem for many players, though it's easy to forget that they are passion projects, with many authors making their living primarily off of donations.
Dragonflight's pre-patch and launch were rocky periods for addons, with many issues with the in-game addon API happening during pre-patch and some are still ongoing. This has led to many more addon updates and bug fixes being required over the last few weeks than might be expected, even for a new expansion launch. While you might think many players would give up on using them, many of these addons have remained obscenely popular, with Details and Deadly Boss Mods both
surpassing a million downloads
.
As per Blizzard's EULA and ToS, addons cannot be commercialized and must be distributed free of charge, though developing many of the bigger addons have become full time jobs relying on donations and ad revenue to stay afloat. With that in mind, we're highlighting ways to contribute to some of your favorite addon authors if you would like to do so!
