Streamer and mental health advocate
DesMephisto
has started a campaign to support Activision Blizzard employees by streaming on Twitch, protesting the actions of systemic abuse within Activision Blizzard and those who have enabled it. Using the hashtags #ABetterABK and #EndAbuseInGaming, the goal is to send a unified message during Activision's second quarter conference call, reminding investors and executives of our love for this game and its employees.
This streamer-driven protest is meant to coincide with Activision Blizzard's second quarterly investor earning results conference call, in which they'll discuss the companies financials over the last quarter, although you'd expect to hear serious decline due to the recent
investigations
,
walkouts
, and
protests
, it covers the April - June months before the most recent controversy went public.
The Motely Fool
expects the company will post a decline in Q2 bookings compared to the year-ago quarter driven by Covid lockdowns, though growth should pick up in the fourth quarter with the launch of several new titles, including Diablo 2: Resurrected and Diablo: Immortal. Call of Duty also faces a difficult year-over-year comparison to the launch of Warzone in 2020, though adjusted earnings per share are expected to have increased.
That said, there's no way the investigation, lawsuit, and subsequent protests won't be addressed, so we can expect to hear at least a few talking points going over those recent events. Launching this protest to coincide with the earnings call is meant to help capitalize on public attention from executives and investors alike. In his own words:
The point of this protest is to show a unified front. To show the shareholders, to show ABK that we are watching and that we demand change. They will be held accountable, this will stay in the light. It is time things change, too many women in general have suffered abusive work places, and not just women, men as well. Gaming needs to become a better place for everyone.
