Diablo IV Datamining - Examining Higher Rank Gems and World Tier 5

Recent datamining by
DataMineARPG revealed evidence
of World Tier 5, suggesting new challenges soon coming to Diablo IV, but is this really what Blizzard has planned for the release of Season 1? Our own digging suggests these could be leftover development assets and may not necessarily be coming anytime soon.
Leftover Development Tiers
In their defense, DataMineARPG's
blog post
makes it very clear that their findings are speculative, but while the assets certainly make it
look
like a new world tier is in the works, our own digging suggests the complete opposite - that they're actually old assets rather than new ones.
Note that World Tier 5 uses the older style of icon from the test development builds, whereas World Tiers 1-4 have since been updated with new art.
In previous test builds, there really were five world tiers - Adventurer, Veteran, Nightmare, Hell, and Torment - which progressed the same way we do now, with each being unlocked through the completion of a different capstone dungeon. In this build, progressing from World Tier 4 to 5 required completion of the
Archives of Issalia
capstone dungeon, which was removed in the live release, while WT4 was renamed Torment and WT5 features like Ancestral items merged down.
Even the developers have indirectly mentioned this change in direction. During an interview last November, Game Director Joe Shely commented on the
existence of five world tiers
and their capstone dungeons, though IGN writer Travis Northup reported that
later interviews only mentioned four
- indicating that plans changed during development.
The level
100 Echo of Lilith
is the game's current pinnacle challenge.
Someday, Not Soon
Of course, this doesn't mean that there
couldn't
be a fifth world tier, with its art updated shortly before release, though it may be hard to fit into the current level brackets. Players move into World Tier 3 following completion of the main campaign and level 50 Cathedral of Light capstone dungeon, while World Tier 4 is locked behind completion of the level 70 Fallen Temple capstone dungeon. From there, the only remaining challenge is Throne of Hatred - the game's current pinnacle dungeon, featuring an epic encounter with the level 100 Echo of Lilith.
Given the incredibly high amount of experience required to progress from level 70 to 100, it's possible this could be split by another tier break at around 85, though it's hard to imagine Blizzard would add any new features or a new tier of items beyond Ancestral so quickly after launch. If they were to add a fifth world tier, it feels like something that would probably come a bit later on in the game's life cycle alongside a full-fledged endgame content update, rather than launching with its very first season.
New Gem Ranks Seem Likely
Something DataMineARPG reported which does seem likely to be added though are new gems. Although players are currently capped at rank 5 Royal Gems, the game data goes all the way up to rank 8 - there doesn't appear to be a name for rank 6 right now, but we do know that rank 7 is called
Magnificent
and rank 8 is made up of
Perfect Gems
.
Magnificent gems are rounder, while perfect ones are chiseled down to sleeker shapes.
Skulls become more ornate as they're upgraded to higher quality, like the Rank 8 Perfect Skull seen here.
Three new ranks seems like a lot of inflation, so we might not necessarily see all of these new gems become available in Season 1, but eight total ranks actually makes sense given the unlock progression. During the current pre-season, players unlock rank 4 Flawless Gems at level 60, before unlocking the maximum rank 5 Royal Gems at level 70, so three more ranks would fit perfectly into the remaining ten-level breakpoints up to level 100.

In their
blog post
, DataMineARPG even goes so far as to speculate these new gem values, following the pattern outlined by previous ranks. We won't repeat them all here, but it's worth taking a look if you're a fan of speculation!

Whether or not we see these things alongside the launch of Season 1 next month, it's worth remembering that Diablo IV is a live-service game intended to be supported by new content for years to come, featuring a
new season every three months
and
two full-sized expansions
already in the works. Given this pace, it's not really a question of if we'll see new world tiers, end-game challenges, and power progression, but simply a matter of
when
