This guide will show how to open the Secret Cow Level in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 7, and highlight the best strategies and classes to make the most of this treasure area. The Secret Cow Level is one of the most popular treasure farming levels in Diablo II: Resurrected, and with good reason: there are tons of great drops with chances for set items, uniques, and rares. However, it is most often farmed without Magic Find gear for socketed Normal items, runes, jewels, and gems. There are good reasons to farm it on every level, not just on the highest level possible.
How to Open the Secret Cow Level
You can only open the Secret Cow Level for a difficulty level you've completed.
You need to complete all acts in Normal to open Secret Cows, all Nightmare acts for Nightmare Secret Cows, etc. Back in early D2, you could not open the level again if you killed The Cow King, but this restriction was removed and you can open a Secret Cow Level whenever you choose. You will just need to go through these opening steps first each time.
Step 1: Go to Tristram for Wirt's Leg
Open a game in same difficulty level as the Secret Cow Level you wish to open. The level of the Wirt's Leg you acquire must match the level of the Secret Cow Level you wish to open. For example, if you get a Wirt's Leg from a Normal game, then open a Nightmare or Hell difficulty game and try to use it to open a Secret Cow level, the combine won't happen. It can only be used to open a Normal Secret Cow level.
Take the waypoint to
Stony Field
in Act I. You will need to find the ring of stones in Stony Field. Theoretically this can be found anywhere in the zone, but it's almost always either along the top of the zone or along the left side. You will see the open portal to Tristram before you see the full circle of stones itself. Once you've cleared out Rakinishu and his buddies, it's off to old Tristram.
Once inside, you're going to head to the northwest corner of Tristram. Wirt's body isn't easy to see, but he's always located in the same spot, not far from the broken docks and water. Tristram is one of the few maps in D2:R that doesn't randomize, so he is always in the same place on the same map. Click Wirt's body for a burst of gold and Wirt's Leg. Return to town.

Step 2: Combine in Horadric Cube
You will need to combine Wirt's Leg with a Tome of Town Portal in your Horadric Cube. The easiest thing to do is to buy a Tome of Town Portal from a local vendor (I usually use Akara in Act I). When you do the combine. the Secret Cow Level portal will appear, so make sure to stand where you want the portal to be. You can create the portal anywhere in the game; it's just more convenient to do this in a town close to vendors/stash where you can sell or deposit items.
The Secret Cow Level portal will remain open until you close that game session. You can use Town Portals go between town and the Secret Cow Level, but the main portal will remain in place.
Secrets of the Secret Cow Level
It may just look like a place to mow down crowds of mooing cows (and it is!), but there are ways to optimize the Secret Cow Level based on what you're trying to accomplish. The Secret Cow Level has one guaranteed Super Unique boss, The Cow King, and usually has 1-2 Elites and occasional Champion Hell Bovine cow packs.
The major draw of the Secret Cow Level is with overall mob density. There are gigantic packs of Hell Bovines all over the place you can kill, as well as the Super-Unique Hell Bovines, and The Cow King. There are also occasional Champion packs of Hell Bovines and Unique Hell Bovines, but they're all variations on the same cow. This means that it's easy to gear for and entirely predictable what you'll get for mobs.
The configuration of the Secret Cow Level is random, but within a narrow scope. It's always a large loop with a void in the middle, with a large corral containing The Cow King somewhere on the map and a smaller corral of fences which usually just contains regular Hell Bovines. I usually run the outside perimeter first, and then the inside perimeter to make sure I don't miss anything. Be sure to check the ground carefully as there are plenty of loose rocks, chests, and dead rogues to turn over for additional treasure.

and the smaller corral on the center right.
Treasure Levels
The treasure levels for the Secret Cow difficulty levels are as follows:
Difficulty
Level
Normal
28
Nightmare
64
Hell
81
While The Cow King is higher level (31, 67, and 86 respectively), the treasure levels are slightly lower than the level boss's highest level. This and the sheer number of trash mobs make this undesirable for Unique and Set level farming, but fantastic for other purposes.
Mob Uniformity
The best part about the Secret Cow Level is the mob uniformity. Other than The Cow King, a few named random bosses, and the occasional Champion pack, nearly the entire level is made up of large packs of regular Hell Bovines.
Hell Bovines travel in packs that can range anywhere from a few to over 30 in a single mob. Moo-mooing their tocsin of doom, they swarm the way no earthly cows ever should. Seriously, though, these cows can do heavy melee-range Physical damage with those big halberds, so ranged melee and casters are at a distinct advantage facing a giant pack of Hell Bovines.
These are the Hell Bovines' resistances in the various difficulty levels. Hell Bovines are least resistant to Poison and Magic, and most resistant to Cold, Fire, Lightning, and Physical Damage.

The Cow King
As level bosses go, The Cow King isn't that much of a problem, except if you are a Lightning-based class and spec such as a Lightning Javazon or Tesladin. The Cow King is Lightning Immune and Magic Resistant on all difficulty levels, and gets one additional random modifier in Nightmare and two in Hell.
Killing The Cow King in Diablo 2: Resurrected does not make it impossible to open future portals to the Secret Cow Level.
This was a restriction in old Diablo II, but this restriction was removed in D2:R. Kill The Cow King all you like. You will still see in older guides that have not been updated for D2:R that still say this, but this is absolutely no longer the case. Believe me: I've killed The Cow King many, many times and can still open portals just fine.
The Cow King can always be found in the large corral, which is in a random location within the Secret Cow Level. There are two corrals in the Secret Cow Level, one large and square, the other small with more visible fencing. The large corral always has elements of stone and is more open than the smaller one. The Cow King is usually down in the lower left corner of this corral, along with packs of other cows. He's not easy to pick out; he is wearing a crown but this visual gets lost in the chaos.
All Hail the Cow King's Corral
Because of his Lightning Immunity, any Lightning-based class needs to have at least one backup ability to help bring him down. A good Mercenary is usually capable of soloing The Cow King in Normal and Nightmare modes, and sometimes in Hell, as long as you can get the other cows down quickly and perhaps feed a potion or two. Even with his predictable Lightning Immunity, the Secret Cow Level is still a fine place for Lightning-based classes to farm.
Magic Find Not Required
In fact, you get the most out of the Secret Cow Level by leaving all your Magic Find gear at home.
Other than The Cow King, there are usually only 1-3 other bosses or champion packs on the level. As noted previously, the treasure levels of The Secret Cow Level are not that remarkable for farming Uniques, Sets, or Rares.
What the Secret Cow Level does have to offer is the ability to farm a place with a uniform, predictable mob composition for items that aren't affected by your Magic Find: Normal quality Socketed items, Normal quality items to receive sockets, Runes, Gems, Jewels*, and Charms*. It's one of
the
best places in game to find Socketed gear for making Runewords.
*Jewels and Charms do not have non-Magic states, so Magic Find doesn't influence your ability to find these. Magic Find does not increase your ability to find items that are inherently magic; it increases the chance that a base item that you loot will upgrade to Magic, Rare, Set, or Unique. You will have less chance of having a Jewel upgrade to Rare, but it won't affect the chance for a Jewel to drop. What to Farm on Different Difficulties
Normal
There is only one thing people sometimes farm The Secret Cow Level to get that would benefit from Magic Find, and that's farming for the leveling set The Cow King's Leathers. These set pieces can drop off any Cows, but only in Normal difficulty. It's not worth farming for the character who's actually doing this farming, because once you're to the point that you can do Normal Cows, you're too high level to want it. It's a decent set for lower level characters, requiring levels 18-25 to use, making it a good Normal-range leveling set.
Normal is also great for farming for Chipped and Flawed Gems, which are needed to upgrade lower-level Runes from
Amn
(#11) to
Um
(#22). Jewels are also used in armor and weapon crafting recipes for the Horadric Cube, and since these can be any level, lower level ones are a cheap sacrifice. You can also find Runes here up through
Sol
(#12).
You can also use it to farm for Socketed weapons and armor for making Nightmare-era Runewords. You will begin to get some Exceptional versions of these here.
Runes in D2:R Gear Crafting in the Horadric Cube
Nightmare
Nightmare is great for searching for socketable Normal quality items for lower level Hell, as you will start seeing some socketed Elite quality items dropping here. It's also one of the best places to farm for "skillers" -- Grand Charms with plusses to class skills. You can get Runes up through
Sur
(#29), and you'll also get Gems up through Perfect quality.
Hell
This is the best place to farm for your highest-level Normal socketable items for end-game use, as well as high-level Charms. You can also get all Runes here, right up through Zod (#33).
Best Classes for The Secret Cow Level
The best classes for farming The Secret Cow Level are ranged AoE classes, where players can kill large numbers at once without getting too close. Necromancers. Javazons, and Strafezons are fantastic cow killers, as are Hammerdins and Trapsins. Sorceresses do well with Cows, but get into trouble fast if they allow themselves to be overrun.
Some of the Lightning builds are among the very best choices, even thought the Cow King is Lightning Immune. One of the acknowledged champions of Cow Level runs are Lightning Fury Javazons, whose speed and ability to mow down Hell Bovines like they're harvesting wheat is nearly unparalleled. Even a few points into one of the Poison Javelin spell is enough to help your Mercenary take out The Cow King. Highly mobile Lightning-based Sorceress builds are also great, and Teleport can cure a lot of the issues with getting swarmed by angry cows.
There is debate on whether Elemental-based Druids make good cow farmers or not. Wind Druids have better speed, but the unpredictability of direction on some of their abilities can make them frustrating to use on this level. Fire druids currently suffer from some issues with long cooldowns, but upcoming improvements on Patch 2.4 may raise their ability to do the Cow levels well. Certainly these are viable builds for Secret Cow Level runs, but perhaps not among the most efficient. Summoner Druids do very well with Cows when they have a full zoo to take in.
Melee DPS builds do not make great Cow level farmers. The Hell Bovines come in huge numbers and hit very hard, making it very easy to get swarmed and interrupted. High Faster Hit Recovery (FHR) is an absolute must here if you're going to try, as you're going to get stunned a lot. Whirlwind Barbarians with high-level gear can do reasonably well, but it's still far from the most efficient build here.
