Welcome to Wowhead's guide to Item Rarity in Diablo II: Resurrected (D2:R). There are many different gear rarity levels in D2:R, with roles and restrictions assigned to all. There are some upgrade paths to some levels of gear, including adding sockets to certain types.
Gear Rarity Levels in Diablo II: Resurrected
There are five basic ranks of items, each with its own name color:
Normal or Normal Socketed
Magic
Rare
Set
Unique
There are also Ethereal versions of all these types of gear, a special state of the gear where the armor has both great bonuses and one big drawback: it can't be repaired.
While gear of any rarity can drop at nearly any level and difficulty in game, the higher the level of game, the more Rare, Set, and Unique items you will see. Adding Magic Find items will increase your chances of getting any magical drops.
Many gear types and qualities can be changed or improved using the Horadric Cube. For all gear-related recipes, please see our separate guide:

Normal Rarity Gear in Diablo II: Resurrected
Normal
quality items includes any items that have no magical properties on their own, except for built-in properties such as Defense for armor and Damage for weapons.
Basic Normal Gear Facts:
Item name is in
White
(Normal) or
Grey
(Normal Socketed)
No magic properties
Can have up to the maximum number of Sockets: Weapons (1-6), Chest Armor (1-4), Shield (1-4), Helm (1-3)
Percent change of Gambling: 0%
Normal Socketed
gear items that have anywhere from 1-6 Sockets that can accept Gems, Jewels, or Runes.
Normal Socketed
Chest Armor, Helms, Weapons, and Shields are the only gear items that can be used to create Runewords.
Runeword-enhanced Normal Socketed armor is a major source of end-game gear
for those playing the full version with the Lord of Destruction (LoD) expansion enabled.
You can create
Normal Socketed
Weapons, Chest Armor, Head Armor, or Shields out of regular
Normal
unsocketed pieces using the Horadric Cube.

Magic Rarity Gear in Diablo II: Resurrected
Magic
items have 1-2 random Magic properties.
Basic Magic Gear Facts:
Item name appears in Blue
Has 1-2 random Magic properties
Can have 1-4 sockets in Chest Armor, Weapons, and Shields. Helms have 1-3.
Percent change of Gambling: about 90% (9 in 10)
Magic items will have a Prefix, a Suffix, or both. The chances of it having any of these three are as follows:
Only a Suffix: 50%
Only a Prefix: 25%
Both a Prefix and a Suffix: 25%
Prefixes and Suffixes change depending on the item being used. For example, Melee Weapons can have properties such as Attack Rating and +Damage. Armor will have defensive properties such as +Defense. +Mana items are most common on items used by spell casting classes. Jewelry is more likely to carry bonuses to Magic Find.
There are Horadric Cube recipes you can use to create Magic Amulets, Magic Rings, Magic Shield, put Sockets on Magic items, and reroll the affixes on Magic items. Generally, most Magic items are not interesting enough to warrant a trip through the Horadric Cube, but rerolling is popular for Jewels and especially Small Charms. You can also use the Horadric Cube to add 1-2 sockets to
unsocketed
Chest Armor, Head Armor, Shield, or Weapon. You can't add more sockets to a previously socketed item.
Runewords do not work in Magic-quality items.
Magic items are the first quality level where items need to be
Identified
before you can use them. Rare, Set, and Unique items also need to be Identified. You can Identify items in the field using a
Scroll of Identify/Tome of Identify
, or you can ask Deckard Cain to Identify your items in town. He will charge for this service until you rescue him through the quest line
Search for Cain
-- after that, he will Identify items for free. You can't equip an Unidentified item.
Here are a few examples of Magic-quality Items you may encounter.
Shimmering Ring of Fortune
Required Level: 45
+6% to each Resistance
+20% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
Argent Jewel
Required Level: 44
+90% to Attack Rating
Hexing Grand Charm of Sustenance
Required Level: 61
+1 to Curses (Necromancer Only)
+35 to Life
While most Magic items will be replaced quickly by better-quality Rare and Unique items, the one class of Magic items that remains universally popular throughout all levels are
Charms
. Almost all Charms are Magic quality, except for three Unique charms. For more information on Charms, see the following guide:
Charms in Diablo II: Resurrected
Rare Gear in Diablo II: Resurrected
Rare gear is magical gear with more affixes and a special random name. The names appear in yellow, but the properties are listed in blue. Instead of having a name such as "Holy Breast Plate of the Giant", it would have a name like "Skull Carapace". Rare items can have 2-6 magical properties among the available Prefixes and Suffixes appropriate to the gear.
Basic Rare Gear Facts:
Item name appears in Yellow
Has 2-6 random Magic properties
Can have 1-2 sockets in Chest Armor, Head Armor, Shield, and Weapon.
Percent change of Gambling: about 10% (1 in 10)
Rare items can have up to 3 Prefixes and 3 Suffixes on a single piece, but no single Prefix or Suffix can be duplicated. They also can't have more than one prefix or suffix from a single group with the same effect (ie. can't have two +Resist All suffixes). However, you can have a Prefix and a Suffix that do the same thing. An example of this would be a Rare weapon that rolled up with the Fiery prefix (+15-25 Minimum and 31-60 Maximum Fire Damage) with a Burning suffix (+5-9 Minimum and +10-20 Maximum Fire Damage); this would be allowed.
Rare gear cannot accept Runewords, even those short enough for the limited space.
Players who choose to play without the (LoD) expansion enabled rely primarily on good Rares for gearing. Without access to Runes, Runewords, or Jewels, any Socketed Rares will be augmented with Gems.

Some examples of possible Rare items
Set Gear in Diablo II: Resurrected
Sets are gear items that, when worn together, create a whole greater than the sum of the parts. Sets create extra bonuses based on how many items of the Set you have equipped. This includes partial set bonuses, where you will have some extra abilities if you have only a certain number of the set items equipped.
Basic Set Item Facts:
Item name appears in Green
Has both individual static properties and Set Bonus properties
Requires more than one item in the same set to get bonuses (varies by set)
Can have predetermined numbers of Sockets depending on the set
Can only have 1 socket added to a single Chest, Helm, Shield, or Weapon through Larzuk quest in Act V, once per difficulty
Percent change of Gambling: about 0.10% (1 in 1000))
One of the best examples to use for illustration is the Angelic Rainment set, a fairly low-level set with melee characters in mind:
Angelic Wings
Amulet
Required Level: 12
20% Damage Taken Goes to Mana
+3 to Light Radius
Angelic Rainment
Angelic Wings
Angelic Halo
Angelic Mantle
Angelic Sickle

+20 To Life
Angelic Rainment
Angelic Wings

Ring Mail
Defense: 5-14
Durability: 26 or 26
Required Strength: 36
Required Level: 12
+40% Reduced Damage
Damage Reduced by 3
Angelic Rainment

Sabre
One-Hand Damage: 5-14

Durability: 32 of 32
Required Strength: 25
Required Dexterity: 25
Required Level: 12
+75 to Attack Rating
+250% Damage to Undead
Angelic Rainment
Angelic Wings
Angelic Halo
Angelic Mantle
Angelic Sickle
By themselves, these four pieces are no better than middling Magic items. However, once you start adding pieces together, the benefits multiply. Not only can you get an some excellent partial set bonuses for having 2 or 3 items, you can also get different bonuses based on which items you are using to make these combinations:
2 set items: Overall bonus: +10 Dexterity
2 set item includes Angelic Wings: +75 Life
2 set item includes Angelic Halo: + (12 Per Character Level) 144-1188 Attack Rating (Based On Character Level)
2 set item includes Angelic Mantle: +150 Defense
2 set item includes Angelic Sickle: +75 Enhanced Damage
3 set items: Overall bonus: +50 Mana
3 set item includes Angelic Wings: +1 To All Skills
3 set item includes Angelic Halo: +50% Better Chance Of Getting Magic Items
3 set item includes Angelic Mantle: Fire Resist +50%
3 set item includes Angelic Sickle: 30% Increased Attack Speed
Full set bonus:
Half Freeze Duration
All Resistances +25
40% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
Regenerate Mana +8%
+10 Dexterity
+50 Mana
Note that you have to have all different items to use Set Bonuses. In the case of the Angelic Rainment set, it's possible to wear two Angelic Halo rings, since they are not Unique, and they will double up on the Specific Item bonuses. They will not give credit toward full set bonuses.
That said, most Sets are not that popular for end-game gearing. You can often get better properties with single items combined than some sets. Plus, unless you're doing a lot of trading, acquiring a full set can be challenging. There are some sets that remain popular -- Sigon's Complete Steel for leveling or mercenary gear, Griswold's Legacy for Paladins, Immortal King for melee (not just Barbarians), and Tal Rasha's Wrappings for Sorceresses are often mentioned favorably by seasoned players. Some have good items that are great on their own, or with just a couple pieces. The Angelic Wings amulet + Angelic Halo ring is often cited as a great combo for melee characters who are having trouble getting hits due to the high Attack Rating this 2-set item combination provides.
Do your class/spec research and you'll find recommendations on Set items and others. Even if you're not collecting a specific Set, Set items from popular sets like the ones mentioned above are highly tradable.
Unique Gear in Diablo II: Resurrected
Unique gear is the backbone of many gearing strategies: use Normal Socketed armor with Runewords for Weapon, Body Armor, and Helm (and Shield if using), and then fill in as many of the rest of the items with Unique gear. Some Unique gear is better than possible Runeword gear in the affected slots.
Basic Unique Item Facts:
Item name appears in Tan
Has static properties, but many properties have randomized ranges within the ability
Can have predetermined numbers of Sockets depending on the set
Can only have 1 socket added to a single Chest, Helm, Shield, or Weapon through Larzuk quest in Act V, once per difficulty
Percent change of Gambling: about 0.05% (1 in 2000)
As the name implies, you can only equip one Unique piece in any slot type at a time. You can certainly wear an entire set of nothing but Unique pieces, but there can be no duplicates. However, you can carry more than one of the same type in your stash. Mostly this doesn't come into play except with three items: Rings, Charms, and Weapons for dual-wielding classes such as the Barbarian or Assassin. There are three Unique Charms in game, and while you can carry one of each type in your inventory, you can't carry more than one of each there. The same Unique will not drop within the same game.
Unique items have set names and properties (with possible roll ranges). You can add a maximum of 1 socket to Chest Armor, Helm, Shield, or Weapon.
Some abilities that are only found on Unique items include Absorbs (Damage), Critical Strike, Crushing Blow, Deadly Strike, Defense vs. Missile, Hit Blinds Target, Hit Causes Monster to Flee, Hit Freezes Target, Ignores Target Defense, Open Wounds, +Fire Skills, On Striking, On Attack, When Struck.
There are also some that will only spawn for characters playing with LoD enabled.

Ethereal Items in Diablo II: Resurrected
Ethereal isn't really an item rarity statement, as much as it is a subtype of gear, similar to Socketed. Ethereal gear appears as a semi-transparent version of normal items, with some bonuses and some definite drawbacks. Nearly any Armor or Weapon type can be Ethereal, with the exception of amulets, rings, arrows, bolts, bows, crossbows, Phase Blades, or Set Items.
Basic Ethereal Item Facts:
Can be found in any rarity level except Set Items, with or without sockets as appropriate to that rarity
Can be nearly any Armor or Weapon type, except amulets, rings, arrows, bolts, bows, crossbows, or Phase Blades
Cannot be repaired
Pros:
Ethereal items have a 50% bonus to their damage (weapons) or defense (armor and shields)
Ethereal items have reduced stat requirements (requires 10 less Strength or Dexterity to wield)
Con (major):
You cannot repair Ethereal Items. Once it's broken, it's gone.
There are a few ways to manage the fact that Ethereal items cannot be repaired. Even the Horadric Cube recipe used to Repair or Recharge items does not work on Ethereal items. However, there are a few things that may help you manage a good Ethereal item:
Some Ethereal weapons will regenerate their own if they have the Self-Repair or Restoration suffixes.
However, that only works if they're allowed to regenerate; if they break, they will no longer repair themselves. However, Ethereal Thrown Weapons will replenish quantity, even if they hit quantity (0).
You can fit an Ethereal weapon with a Zod rune
, which makes it Indestructible. Destroying the Zod rune through the Horadric Cube recipe will reset the Durability to what it was before you inserted the Zod rune; you can't use this as a "repair". However, Zod runes can be difficult to come by, so only use this for a really, really good Ethereal item. You can use Normal Socketed Ethereal items to take Runewords, and there is one high-level Weapon runeword, Breath of the Dying, that contains Zod.
You can give the Ethereals to your mercenary.
Mercenary equipment does not lose Durability.
There is a reported (and
unconfirmed
) method of recharging and restoring a Unique Ethereal weapon, and that's by renaming it through Anya. After completing the quest line that ends up destroying Nihlathak, you get a quest where you can Personalize the weapon by adding your name to the beginning of the item. Supposedly, this will restore the Ethereal item's Durability to its highest amount. Renaming only works on Unique weapons; whether it works to restore lost Ethereal Durability needs more research.
