Dungeon Finder: Friend, Foe or Fail?
Recently, a player on the official forums brought forth a strong opinion regarding the use and abuse of the Dungeon Finder. I'll admit, I haven't been using the Dungeon Finder much lately to find groups as I've been solely doing Heroics with my guildmates or premade server groups. Apparently, though, many players are reporting cases of abuse of the system, ending up in groups which are ruled by seemingly tyrannical leaders / groups who call the shots in rude and unfair ways. That is, when they're actually playing. Players are also reporting groups where people will queue up as a majority or tank / healer role, then refuse to actually
play the game
. I'm sorry, but if you're going to sit there and go through the trouble of logging into the game and queueing up for a dungeon, why the hell
wouldn't
you play?
How should players deal with this? Is it our responsibility to have to deal with attempting to kick players (which won't always work), or are changes to the Dungeon Finder by Blizzard the answer? Do you think the problem is in the Dungeon Finder's lack of penalty for such players? Would a karma system
actually
work? Read on for a full look at the Dungeon Finder system and learn to

Corpse Run's Item Comparison Walkthrough
Player
Abrad
of the guild
Corpse Run
, known here on Wowhead as
ABrad45
, has written up a guide on his guild site for our
Item Comparison
tool!
We're always very flattered when people share our work with their guilds, and this is a good FAQ for people who are interested in getting the most out of the tool, so we thought we'd take the time to link it here. :)

Using the Power of Wowhead: Wish Lists
Hey all! Neutronimity here, your friendly neighborhood German translator! Some of you may remember that I am
also
a blogger, from back in the
WWR
days. Seeing as how I'm STILL a blogger, I figured it was time I earned the title!
I know some people are still a bit unfamiliar with using the database, so I decided to write a series of posts to illustrate a few examples of how you can utilize Wowhead to its fullest potential. I hope to be be covering most of the site's tools and taking advantage of their detailed guides. What you'll be reading is a collection of example tasks, using Wowhead, which should inspire you to come up with a similar methods of fulfilling your goals—whatever they may be.
Curious? Read on after the break!
PS: I would like to thank
blademeld
for feedback and ideas, and
MasterOfDisguise
for generously editing and correcting my rather ragged English.

Increase in Hacked Accounts: Cause for Concern?
As someone who's been reading and posting in Blizzard's
Customer Service Forum
for over a year now, I can tell you that I've seen my fair share of complaints. Sadly, though, I've been noticing an increase in one particular thing—the amount of accounts that have been compromised or "hacked."
Should this be a cause for concern? With the number of compromised accounts increasing by the day, in spite of the numerous warnings Blizzard has put out, maybe it's time to both clear up the misconceptions as to how an account can become compromised and remind ourselves what we can do to prevent a compromise from happening—or for some of us, from having it happen again.

Taking a Break Can Ease Challenges
Have any of you taken a
MMO vacation
recently? I know I have. Sometimes you need some time away from things to clear your head. Maybe catch up on a few chores or errands you put off recently. I remember last playing World of Warcraft a few months ago. I was working on an
achievement
which was timed. I thought it was really fun, but it was kind of hard at the time, too.
Whether I'm trying to pull off a huge combo in a skateboarding game or trying to solve a riddle in a role-playing game I feel as though my work would be complete if only I could achieve that one special goal. Of course, it seldom happens that way for me.

Not Enough Hotkeys? The Secret Art of Palm-Pressing
Wishing you had a way to get more keys in-game? I had a tough time managing key binds over the years. Eventually I developed a method I like to call
palm-pressing
. Through this technique, I am able to multiply the amount of buttons my fingers push. Interested?

Wowhead 101 - Using Weightings!
I touched on this a little bit on my first post '
Wowhead 101 - Using Filters!
', but weightings are so powerful they need a post of their own.
What are weightings?
Weightings, simply put, are similar to a ranking system. They allow you to assign "point multipliers" to each stat type on an item.
How do these "point multipliers" work?
Well I'll give you an example. Say you have a filter like
this
(I've added a some custom filtering as well so it only shows 2 results). You can see that the 'Score' is identical for both items. You can play around with the multipliers I've given to see how it affects the score. For example, you could assign a better weighting to stamina over raw health, which is really useful if your class has a talent that affects stamina.

Raider Apprentice - Addons
You ever found desktop so full of icons that you almost need to use a search engine to find the folder you need? Or your desk/working place literally hidden by mountains of papers, hole-punchers, sticky notes, staplers, folders, binders, pens and other office tools? Well, things like that can happen in WoW too, and I am an unfortunate victim of Addon addiction.

Creating Good Forum Topic Titles
We have a large community here at Wowhead and ever since the introduction of our forums there has been a large amount of threads which all share one thing in common: "Help me, please!" Many users looking for help at other sites are often left feeling lost, but thanks to our great community of users (and obviously our staff), we like to think most of you actually do receive the help you need—whether it's in the form of a direct answer or simply being pointed in the right direction. In this entry, my goal is to help lead users away from vague "Help me!" titles and towards more specific requests, so they can get the help they're looking for.

Wowhead 101 - Using Filters!
I was in our
Wowhead IRC Channel
the other day, talking to some of our regulars, when someone asked "How do I find enchantments with X stat on them?" I was thinking about this, and I started to realize that Wowhead's filters are actually a surprisingly under-utilized feature. So, in the interest of making
everyone's
trip through Azeroth a little easier, I thought I'd take a minute to talk about the Wowhead filter system and how you can use it to find the info you need.
Class is now in session!

Hacked Passwords - Are You Safe?
As some of you may have read in one of our recent blogs account security is at an all-time high for World of Warcraft fans. Coming after the release of a highly anticipated expansion, and an especially busy holiday season, many players are still finding their accounts compromised. Historically, Blizzard has been able to track and shut down illegal activity, but these things are complicated and could take up to several months for a thorough investigation. Even then, not all accounts are able to be restored completely, if at all.
As we covered
previously
, the top three culprits are shared account passwords, illegal account services (real money trading or power-leveling, etc.) and malware such as trojans or viruses. Blizzard will never ask for an account password except on the official website, the official forums or Armory, and the actual game log-in screen. Likewise, never share an account password with another person, even ones you trust.

Philosophy of a Good Player
Recently I began digging around in various forums (both here at
Wowhead
and at other sites) trying to find a few good replies to the question, "What does it take to be a good DPS?"
Many players are still learning, or perhaps just started the game—and with over 11 million players, surely there are questions. My goal is to provide answers of a different color. Today I'm throwing out another (hopefully) thought-provoking entry. I originally planned it around damage dealers exclusively, but this entry can be applied to many roles (and in real life). And no, it was not conceived that way because I'm suffering from an influx of
Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3
. Okay, maybe I lied. Maybe. =)

Nameplates & Suggestions to Blizzard
In my entry today I'm going to discuss two little issues which I feel aren't being paid enough attention. Nameplates and the default threat system. You may be asking yourself, "What in Azeroth's three continents does threat and etched dinnerware have to do with each other?" The answer, of course, is you are silly. No, but seriously, these are two little topics which I'm going to present separately, then show you my suggestion to Blizzard to help truly maximize some of the already included features in the game.
Stick around for some exciting highs, disagreeable lows, and a lollercoaster ride you'll never forget. Okay, maybe not. Stick around anyway!

Five Handy Macros (Yes, I use them!)
Ever wanted more bag space? How about more slots on the toolbar? Here's a list of five practical macros which I enjoy myself and would like to share with other players embarking on their epic journey to Northrend. These work even if one doesn't have the expansion. Simply copy and paste the code into the new macro text area (type /macro to start) and
voila!
A Micro-Macro Philosophy
A macro should be something that helps a player out, not burden them or make their play experience unwieldy. So that said, a macro should meet at least two of the following three stipulations to make it on the list:
A macro should not play the game for you, but help you play the game,
A macro must save space on the hotbar,
A macro must provide functionality which, by default, was difficult to achieve.
Check out the 5 macros, after the jump!
