Today we will take a look at the DPS balance in Castle Nathria at the end of the second week of Shadowlands Season 1. The second week of every season always marks the beginning of the Mythic Race,
which you can follow here

. For this analysis we will use data provided by

The data for this article was taken from the
Castle Nathria Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs
under the Shadowlands Season 1partition at the 95th percentile for Heroic and Mythic difficulties.
The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the state of class balance for Castle Nathria in Shadowlands Season 1 after the
tuning changes that happened last week
in preparation for Mythic difficulty opening. We will look more in-depth at the specs that had the most variance when compared to
week 1
.
We say perspective, as there are inherent biases in looking at the data this way.
Specs that are considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they actually are.
This happens as many performance-oriented players will tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing even further the gap between top and bottom specs.
The balance between specs is very delicate and will likely change throughout Season 1, as player acquire more gear, different classes and specs tend to perform better with more secondaries.

Spec Analysis for Week 2
In the data above, most specs retained their position or moved slightly. However, a handful of spec have major variances when looking at Heroic Week 1, Heroic Week 2, and Mythic data. To help contextualize these changes, we've asked a couple of our class writers and class experts for their input to explain changes in rankings.
Survival Hunter
Generally statistics for survival are almost entirely unreliable and useless simply due to the sample size. By the end of the second week, there are still less than 10 heroic sire parses for it, as such each individual player will have an insanely powerful effect on the "performance" of the spec. Due to this during first week you will see only 4 or so exceptionally strong survival players who are arguably the best in the world at their spec, propping it up, and pushing it towards middle of the pack performance. As you get more of the casual players clearing it out, and increasing the sample size, the spec will drop to the bottom, furthermore, this is made worse by the dominance of MM, where it's possible that some good players were on the edge to see what exactly they want to play, so they are even more likely to swap to MM leaving only either extremely dedicated, or not very consistent players still on survival.
As mythic week progresses we further see this discrepancy, which is further agitated by the fact that mythic mechanics are not exceptionally welcoming to the melee dps, causing survival to lose even more raid spots on the roster, or perform worse on the dps than a number of other specs.
Affliction Warlock
Warlock as a class is something that is always important to the mythic raid scene - since it's the only class in the game that brings unique traits to the raid, such as healthstones, demonic gateway, and usually summons, which unfortunately happen to be broken this time around. Unsurprisingly, Affliction just has great damage profiles for the raid. Almost all of the add fights in the raid minus Sun King's Salvation seem to have damage burst windows that line up perfectly for either phantom singularity or soul rot, which both amplify damage affliction warlocks do to multiple targets. In addition to this, Affliction also received a small bugfix during the middle of the week - Unstable Affliction was not properly having its damage increased from either shadow embrace or haunt - this netted about a 2.25% single target increase in dps. Along with this, warlock is generally just one of the safer dps to stack in a raid in a lot of scenarios - they're innately tanky (although dramatically less so this raid since tons of mechanics deal physical damage based off of armor), can adapt their damage profiles to different situations easier than other classes, and still have single target funnel, which is generally one of the best traits for dps classes to have in raids.
Shadow Priest
Throughout Legion and Battle for Azeroth, Shadow had been known as one of the strongest dps specs for spread target cleave and add fights. Notable examples being The Queen’s Court in Eternal Palace and The Coven of Shivarra in Antorus The Burning Throne. However, this time around in Castle Nathria, Shadow is having a very different tier.
From early log data for both Mythic and Heroic Castle, the fights Shadow appears strongest on are those which are predominantly single target. The largest contributing factors to this are the game-wide shift away from multi dot strength that began in Battle For Azeroth, and the substantial Shadow Priest rework of Shadowlands. This new direction has worked out mostly in Shadow’s favour, as the spec is performing in the top third for heroic, brought down only by add fights like Sire Denathrius and Sun King. Shadow’s Healing is also worthy of note, with Devouring Plague adding a lot of potent self sustain.
As for Mythic, the data from early bosses continues to show Shadow as a strong single target performer, something we would not expect to have seen in other tiers. However, with more guilds venturing further into Mythic, Shadow has fallen off in both strength and popularity due to the value of burst aoe and immunities. Two things Shadow does provide on later bosses however are Power Infusion and Mass Dispel, which should always be taken into consideration, despite not showing on logs.
Castle Nathria, through the lens of the World-First Race, is a story of Hunters and Death Knights. While Shadow brings its own tools that can be useful on later bosses, it’s unlikely to be something we see dominate in the way it has as a spread cleave spec.
Demonology Warlock
The major factor behind Demonology going from middle of the pack during normal Castle Nathria and Heroic/Mythic is the lack of reliable burst/sustain. Even though Demonology is
supposed
to be the single target spec there is more ramp time and planting of your feet to be able to reliably execute on this damage profile. Compared to Affliction where you have 2-3 DoTs you can cast while moving and another DoT that is a fairly quick cast
while
you generate Soul Shards, basically everything Demonology can do to both generate and spend Soul Shards requires you to stand still which simply does not translate well on a lot of the encounters in Castle Nathria. Given the higher difficulty of Heroic/Mythic you are punished a lot more for standing still and soaking mechanics using your higher passive damage reduction that you can otherwise soak in Normal where the damage is significantly less.
Arcane Mage
We're seeing Arcane perform really well in Mythic so far, but the number of parses is low. That's not at all unusual; the players reaching more than one or two kills right now are literally the best in the world, and if they're playing Arcane at the bleeding edge we can assume they're familiar with the spec. Arcane has some glaring weaknesses that can easily destroy its damage even on single-target fights, notably movement and a lack of good cooldown management, but the players using it in Mythic difficulty know how to play around these quirks and get the most out of Arcane's unusual playstyle.
Fight mechanics play into this, too. Many of the bosses in Castle Nathria are single target - either because there are no adds, or fight mechanics make it pointless or punishing to attack more than one target. More than half the raid consists of this type of fight, where Arcane - theoretically - shines. The spec does great single target damage and, with its new design based around managing cooldowns, can normally guarantee a burst ability no matter when you need it. That makes it very strong for fights like Sludgefist, where you have burst for every damage vulnerability phase.
Additionally, a bug with the way Touch of the Magi's damage amplification worked in cleave was artificially pushing Arcane way up on the Hunstman Altimor fight; this has now been fixed.
