The way my raid did it tonight on 10man, keep your two lowest DPS in the two cannons constantly attacking their airship.
We simply stayed on our airship until their mages froze our cannons. The one tank that jumps over with the DPS grabbed the other airship's boss, while DPS killed the mage.
Once you're finished with killing the mage that's freezing your cannons you MUST return to your ship, otherwise the opposing boss will slowly increase his damage the longer he's in combat. You then clean up the enemies on your ship and repeat.

Basic gist:
0) Have everyone get a rocket belt.
1) You will need two tanks. First for mobs that spawn on your airship, while the other temporarily tanks the boss when the mage freezes your cannons.
2) Have DPS assigned to the cannons. They can be melee or ranged, it doesn't matter much. We chose for melee to be in there since the cannons getting frozen is a sign that DPS (and tank) needs to jetpack over and kill the mage. Plus, ranged DPS can already shoot the NPCs doing the random AoE damage.
3) Don't stand in the big obvious rocket attacks.
4) The tank going over to the enemy airship can position the boss near the ledge and be in range of healers from the friendly airship - no healers really need to go over there at all, although we sent one anyway in case one of our DPS stood in the big obvious rocket attack. Plus, it's a hell of a lot easier to rocket back when you're at the edge.
5) You will need some DPS killing the endlessly spawning mobs on your own airship, especially since they become stronger the longer they are alive. We had our ranged DPS killing the mobs while the melee DPS were killing the mage freezing the cannons.

Why isn't Rending Throw listed in the abilities of High Overlord Saurfang/Muradin Bronzebeard?
After doing the Gunship Battle tonight, once the Saurfang tank jetpacked off the Horde ship, Saurfang would begin throwing his weapon on a seemingly? random target repeatedly. It did about 4000 damage a throw, but he throws it fast stacking the Rend making it quickly tick for 12k and eventually 20k, and even more if you're that unlucky.
Granted your tank shouldn't jetpack before you do, but even after I jetpacked he continued to throw across the ships at me a few more times. It ended up killing one of our melee. Other than the absence of a tank (which really sounds weird since he should just go melee someone else on the ship, which he didn't do for us), does anyone know the trigger for it to be avoided in the future? I guess it gives healers something to do, in the least.

Be careful when jumping from ship to ship with the jetpacks, make sure you click ON the deck of the ship itself.. otherwise it's easy to get

I'm confused about the reason behind this particular fight.
I mean, we've got the Alliance and the Horde, both sides say that the Lich King can't be beaten by their side alone, meaning they need the help of the other faction.
So what exactly are we doing trying to destroy the opposite factions ship and killing their soldiers BEFORE we even get to the Lich King? O_o
Isn't the opposite faction going to be kinda ticked off at us even more for destroying their ship?

Be sure to have a druid try out the
Goblin Rocket Pack
while in bear form. Most of the other forms were canceled by using the rocket pack, with the exception of the bear form, presumably so that druid tanks can maintain their form and rage when moving between the two ships. But the graphic of a bear with a rocket pack stuck on it's butt, blasting fire down... well... let's just say its quite hilarious and looks very painful. My raid group wouldn't stop laughing at me! Any idea how to move to next boss when fight is over?
We scoured the whole ship and did not find any portal. Eventually we all levitated and jumped down.

Something that I wish I had thought of:
For the brave tank that tanks Saurfang (or Muradin, I guess)... make sure s/he either
1. Does not get on cannons or:
2. Is at least healed between ships,
because you cannot heal someone while they are on a cannon.
This help to result in our first and only, yet completely unnecessary wipe on 10man, because when a tank gets over there with less than half health and you have to fight Saurfang right away...well, it isn't pretty.

Once you're finished with killing the mage that's freezing your cannons you MUST return to your ship, otherwise the opposing boss will slowly increase his damage the longer he's in combat.
Ah, but you can use this to your advantage! In my raid tonight we discovered that leaving behind a shaman's fire totem (not sure which one, as I don't play a shaman myself) on the other faction's ship would keep the boss in combat longer, thus delaying the reappearance of the enemy mage.

Last night I did this boss with PUG's and it was quite easy.
We made two groups:
Attackers:
2 Ret Pallys (Highest DPS, around 6k)
2 Healers (Resto Shaman & Disc Priest(me))
1 Warrior tank
Defenders:
1 DK Tank
1 Resto druid
3 Ranged DPS (Elem Shaman, Lock & Mage)
The strategy is easy; make the two Attackers DPS attack the enemy gunship until the cannons are frozen.
They get out of the cannons and the attackers group jumps.
The tank takes Muradin/Saurfang and the two healers overheal him.
The two DPS take the enemy mage down.
When the mage is killed, jump back (Last to jump: Healers, as they need to keep healing the tank)
The Defenders group just keep killing the spawning mobs 1 per 1 (No areas)
Rince and repeat and that's it; it took 4 jumps for us to complete the encounter.

Just did this tonight. Rather easy fight once people have realized whats going on.
Someone in an earlier post mentioned that they kept a totem up for Muradin to attack, thus delaying the mage spawn.
Thats totally not happening. What happens is, Muradin gets even more stacks of his selfbuff up while attacking the totems and the mage timer isnt affected at all.
So, dont leave totems behind.
Best tactic we found working was :
Attack Group : Tank + Healer(shaman) + 4x DPS.
Defence Group: 2nd Tank + Healer + 2x(DPS) cannon users.
Worked wonders for us, (healers were more than capable of 2man-healing this) and the Sorcerer would die within a few seconds. No need for getting the Sorc down to 40% jumping off and jumping back after the debuff had wore off etc bollocks that was mentioned earlier in a previous post. Sorc would go down so fast, that Muradin would only have 6-7 stacks each time of his self buff.

Be careful of lag spikes with the rockets.
About half way trough the fight I got a lag spike as I was jumping back to our ship. I rocketed again, and when the spike was over I saw myself drifting all he way over the other side of the our ship.
Too much rocket fuel :(

If you were to compare this fight to others for
Storming the Citadel
, this fight truly is a complete cakewalk. It is truly that easy! Have everyone equip a jetpack first. Then talk to Muradin/Saurfang to start it all off! You ship will fly off and evntually the other ship will come! When the combat starts start using your cannons to bombard the ship. When at certain intervals a mage will appear and freeze your cannons. Have a tank and a healer plus a couple of dps go over and kill that mage. When it's dead use the cannons again and rinse and repeat. Also make sure you have a tank ready on the other ship to pick up adds that will spawn through a portal (it's located in the center of the ship basically). I as a pally was able to just consecrate and pick up the adds and take care of them. But don't leave them out for too long though, as it increase their damage and attack speed. The tank on the other ship tanks Saurfang/Muradin. Very simple but their damage increases the longer they fight the tank (as in hitting him). Otherwise this fight truly is pretty easy. Save for Saurfang of course. -shudders-

I was doing this earlier with some guildies, and got an annoying bug.
One of our cannoneers was DC'd so we weren't getting the Horde ship down very fast, but we still got it ship down... However, our ship lost all of it's HP at virtually the exact same moment. It killed several people (Including our Master Looter), but some people survived... Only thing was, only the people who survived were able to loot the chest. See, since we had died and got sent off the ship, we didn't get credit for the kill. We did get to Deathbringer Rise, but anyone who had died at the end there couldn't receive loot, and didn't get any emblems.
We all have an open ticket with our raid ID. Hopefully Blizz will take pity on us and at least give us emblems... No tanking stuff dropped, so I didn't care about the loots. Though I'm sure someone in the raid did care.

I'm gonna have to go out there, and say this is the most epic fight I have ever done. Not just cos we're on a boat with cannons.
Tirion Fordring has blessed your assault, telling you to blaze a path of rightousness through the Lich King's home, shouting that the undead shall cower before your fearsome might. Lord Marrowgar, the gatekeeper to Arthas' castle lays in pieces before you. Lady Deathwhisper is split in twain, hordes of undead surrounding you and your friends, every last one released from their walking nightmare.
The Alliance have attacked the Horde as the Kor'Kron attempted to dock their ship on one of the higher reaches of Icecrown Citidel. A Frostwyrm ambushes you, to no avail. You escort Saurfang's personal troops to his ship, only to be invited to board with him.

A rather deadly bug caused two wipes and nearly caused a third for my group last night. The enemy boss (Muradin, in my case) will sometimes
Evade
the tank when he shouldn't, resetting the threat table. At first it seemed to be tied to landing on the "railing" of the enemy gunship, but then the third time (the near-wipe) I landed on the wooden deck, started tanking him, dragging him toward the edge, and all of a sudden (while we were both still on the wooden deck) his threat table reset again! Happily this time he didn't Evade, so I was able to reestablish aggro before he got a chance to hurt anyone.
The rest of my group said they had encountered the Evading problem last week, so I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned here yet.
Two last tips: Falling off the gunship (in the space between) is
not
deadly. You get dropped right back on your own deck at ~half health (though as I found this out while jumping back from tanking Muradin, it could be more, with some of the damage being from bleeding out on the way down). So don't call a wipe on account of your tank going down.
Second, for the love of god tanks don't turn to leave with your right mouse button. (I've been in the habit for ages from PVP). It's perfectly possible to jump backwards off the enemy ship, and you should do it - or you'll eat a cleave in the back.

For the alliance its not actualy Saurfang they're fighting it's actualy just Saurfang back in Warsonghold meditating and with his tremendous power he manages to apear on the airship in a physicle form although he is not near as powerfull as his normal state.

Players should always remember that Muradin survived a Symbolic Icicle through the chest... by getting amnisia. He's still recovering, so forgive him in forgetting to thunderclap. Of course, if Muradin did thunderclap, he'd turn both the ships and Ice Crown into their base atoms, deneying us our Loot.
Oh, and thankfully for us all,
Muradin's Hammer
is on loan to the Frostborn. In the hands of this dwarf, he's cracked entire multiverses.

This is by and far the easiest of all encounters to do on Heroic mode, as a matter of fact it's so easy I've done it on hc with pugs. The only ones who even notice a difference are the healers, since the raid's damage intake is much greater. So take 3 healers on 10M, 6 on 25, and slam the loot pinata for some extra shiny epics.

this is THE best fight i have ever raided! its so easy and the fact that all i have to do is go in a cannon and once in a while kill the adds makes it soo much enjoyable! and even if im not doing that its still very fun! hats off to you blizz to thinking of the player having FUN rather then thinking of a fight that will take 1 month to master so we end up playing longer...

The heroic version of this is laughably easy. Until i actually researched the changes, i never understood what was different.
I highly suggest turning the fight into heroic if possible, even in pugs. It's essentially free ilvl 264hc/277

10-Man Heroic Notes (names taken from a Horde point of view)
Lootboat is only marginally harder. Muradin is the most dangerous part of the fight and requires a good tank with good healers. Remember that tanks can just walk backwards off the enemy ship and be teleported back home; this makes disengaging from Muradin much easier.
Cannoneers should still be attacking Rocket Troopers in the back. The rockets now do a knockback when they hit, which should be avoided even more now (though, we have
tried
and failed to get these to kill us... it's really not very threatening).
Ranged DPS should focus on killed the Marines who board the home boat. When these adds are dead, the ranged has the additional job of standing on the edge of the boat and killing Riflemen. If allowed to fully level up, these Riflemen can randomly gib your players, so have a care and don't let them.
Minutiae: Rockets do a knockback, avoid them. Muradin's tank should be liberal with cooldowns to survive.
Difficulty: 1/10. The fight is trivial on regular and easy on Heroics. If you can kill Lich King, you can do this fight.

Does anyone know what purpose those other two mages serve? They just stand there while you kill the one that's channeling Below Zero. Has anyone tried killing them? I'm thinking it might prevent adds from porting to your ship or something along those lines.

The easiest way to do this fight, and get a nice achievement at the same time, is to have all the melees, one tank, and one healer (disc priest preferred) go over to the enemy ship and stay there.
The tank can use his/her jetpack to "kite" Saurfang/Muradin between the two raised railings on the back of his ship. Simply pull the boss, go and stand over on one railing, and activate your jetpack to jump to the other side. The boss will have to circle around to catch up, and by that time your jetpack should be ready to jump back. If done properly the tank will take no damage at all, and the melees will be free to deal with the mages, rocketeers, and axe throwers at their leisure.
A disc priest is preffered because if the tank is slow and the boss catches up, they can toss a pain suppression and penance out to get them back to full health quickly, but any other healer works just fine as well.
Ranged dps man the cannons and deal with adds on the home ship.

So, my guild ( like everyweek ) was running ICC10 Heroic. Being that we were on lootship, nobody really took it seriously. The tank was tabbing out, the healers were dancing, dps was slacking. Even then the fight is easy.
Around when the alliance ship (we are on the Horde side) was at 20%, our tank that was tanking Muradin died because he forgot to jump back over due to being tabbed out. We had a ret paladin tank Muradin, who died at 5%. Muradin continued to faceroll everyone on the boat.
In an attempt to save the day, the tank on the Horde ship jumped over and got aggro on Muradin and died immediately. (Note: Muradin had a very high buff that pretty much one shot him.)
After that, the mobs on the boat got loose and started destroying everyone else. We had one alive in a turret that won the battle for us, but not quite. The one who was in the turret jumped out and got killed by many angry alliance Marines. We all died, but we won.
Sorta.
All of us ran back into the raid and ported to Deathbringer's Rise to get our loot. Lo and behold, we could not access the chest! Nobody. We tried every method you could think of trying to get it.
No loot, no emblems.
Naturally we all reported tickets to the GMs, and only 3 replied.
The first GM that our warlock got assumed that someone ninja'd the loot for some odd reason, stating, "We cannot retrieve loot that was stolen due to a poor selection of loot rules." or something along the lines of that.
The second GM that our tank paladin got had to send mail to him, for he was not online at the time. That GM for some reason thought that it was about his account being hacked? I don't know.
The THIRD and final GM that I got solved my issue. That GM told me what the loots were (

and
穆拉丁的望远镜
), and told me who to award them to. They also gave everyone in the raid their emblems.
NOTE: We did not wipe on lootship. We skipped it. That's our story and we're sticking to it.
tl;dr Don't skip lootship. You will not get loot. Making it just a ship.

Yeah. Tonight, a few guildies and I made a pug for ICC10. For much of the raid, it was our first time. We got to the ship with no problems whatsoever.
The first time doing it, we just sucked. Our ship was destroyed before theirs was halfway.
Second time, it was going great. Until the other ship was at half, and Saurfang came over to our ship and killed both healers leading to a wipe.
We tried one more time. But this time, Saurfang came over once again when their ship was at like 30%. Once again, wipe.
We thought that Saurfang coming over was a glitch. But is it? And if not, how do we avoid it?

This fight appears to require a minimum of 3 people.
My friend and I (both blood DKs) decided to 2-man ICC, and we found that even with perfect timing (one stays on cannon, the other leaps over and kills sorceress/mortars as fast as possible), we lost when the enemy ship was around 10%.
Unfortunately, there's no room for improvement here - we cannot use both cannons, and our gear has zero effect. A third person looks more or less required.

It IS possible to 2 man this on 25man for a shadowfrost shard, have one person hold all the adds on your ship and a dps on cannon who can survive saurfang. Go crazy with the cannon until the freeze comes and when you go over DO NOT KILL THE MAGE go and steamroll the rocketeers to stop all damage to skybreaker, then burn the mage after this so that the next one doesn't spawn before you can do damage, and jump back to continue damaging. This is the only way to beat it before the rockets blow up your ship

ok, so me and my friend want to complete this entire raid me, solo the lich king. trust me, the rest of the raid will be easy. but we wanted to know, is this fight any harder from 10 to 25? we are both level 90 now, and i have a trinket that can tank and kill the adds on horde's ship. terracotta fragment. but i just want to know if its harder from 10 reg to 25 reg. thanks :)

Well, as of 5.1 the gunship does not port you out when there's no one on the deck, so that's good.
Unfortunately, I was not able to outdamage the enemy ship. I get a jump on it early but quickly lose ground when I have to jump over and kill the mage. I'm prioritizing killing the back adds, maybe focus more on the front?

I just solo'd this (patch 5.1). Quite simple for me. (just don't forget rocket pack before battle from little goblin guy)
Use cannons as much as possible whenever possible.
When kicked out of cannon, kill enemies on Horde ship, then pop over and kill the mage.
Back to the cannons.
Downed Skybreaker, with Hammer still at 40% health.
Of course for allies, it's opposite I assume. (never done it)

For those soloing who have always tanked or healed this fight and never done the guns before, make sure you let the heat build as close to the top of the meter as possible if you plan to beat the other ship on damage. Took me 5 tries to figure it out and I figured I'd help those who also didn't know.

Okay, Solo'd this one on my 90 Ele Shammy Last night (10 man norm)
What I found was doing things in the correct order & you can win this.. Bugger it up though & it's a wipe.
Part 1:
REMEMBER
to pick up a Rocket pack.
Start the encounter and Run over to one of the cannons - I found the best one was the far side cannon as this allowed me to see more of what was going on.
There's 2 buttons you use:
1 is your normal shoot which generates a bit of heat each time it's fired.
2 is your "Power Shot".. the more heat you've generated from shooting "1", the bigger the damage you'll get with this one
I found heat generates anywhere from 4-9 points per shot and the heat bar goes from 0-100. If it hits 100 and you press "1" again, your gun overheats & locks you out for 3 seconds. Then you have to do it all over again as the heat bar resets.
Okay, so you're in the cannon... I aimed it to fire near the back of the enemy gunboat & to my left. This allowed me to see the speech bubble for when adds were about to portal to my ship (DBM does have an add countdown timer but found it kept bugging out!)
Start spamming "1". Once you see the heat bar near 100, hit "2" for your big shot.
This shot should needs to be at least 45k+
. If it's less, you'll gonna struggle to down the enemy boat before yours gets destroyed!
Rinse & Repeat til you see an order go out for a Battle Mage to join in the fight (I ignore the adds that have portal'd over up to this point)
Part 2:
A
Mage
will come out and freeze your guns, pretty much kicking you out of them! Now this is where it gets a bit confusing and will change player to player.....
Depending on how much damage you were doing on the guns, adds may not have spawned on your boat yet. If they haven't, use the rocket pack to jump onto the enemy boat & take out the
Mage
.
Once she's dead, Rocket pack back.
Adds should have (or about to) spawned.. take them out quick as they start to set your ship on fire! There will be 3 at a time.. 2 small ones & a commander.
Nuke them down (they drop quick).
If the adds had spawned before the
Mage
appeared & froze your gun, take out the adds first, then jump over to the other ship, kill the
mage
, jump back.
Now run back over to the cannon, just back in it & repeat part 1.
Add management, Speed, and getting the heat bar to near maximum on the guns, before hitting "2", are the key to winning this fight.
Things to remember:
If you don't kill the
Mage
when it spawns, your guns will stay Frozen until she dies = PROBABLE WIPE (if you take too long)
If you don't kill the adds that spawn on your ship, they'll do a debuff which increases the damage your ship takes (+ the fires they start on your ship) = WIPE
If you don't use the guns at all = WIPE
If you don't let heat build up in your gun before letting off the big shot = WIPE
Now what about the other adds on the enemy ship you ask? Ignore them.. If you start messing about trying to kill them as well = WIPE
Confused?
Took me 5 - 7 attempts to get all the timings right for the way I ran it, but it is indeed possible to solo.. Patience, lots of coffee & quite a few smoke breaks helped me in the end!
TIP
Run the encounter a few times to get used to the mechanics & what is going on.
YOU WILL WIPE
! But when you go to do it properly, you'll find it alot easier.

Soloed a 10-man Heroic version of Gunship Battle as a Demo Warlock without minion.
Talents:
Harvest Life, Mortal Coil, Soul Link, Burning Rush, Grimoire of Sacrifice (Voidlord), Kil'jaeden's Cunning

With patch 5.1 Gunship Battle became soloable - using the Cannon no longer resets the encounter.
Your minion disappears, when you move to enemy ship, so you will not need it. Before the start of the fight, you have to get and equip jet pack that allows you the jump between the two ships. Jet pack is provided by the Engineer NPC on your ship. Use Demonic Circle to quickly return to your ship. Gunship Cannon use Heat as a resource. When a Cannon's Heat level reaches 100, the Cannon becomes overheat and inactive for 3 seconds - this must be avoided. Stack Heat as much as possible, before the enemy ship arrives. Do not kill all of two Kor'kron Rocketeers/Skybreaker Mortar Soldiers until the first wave of adds will appear on your ship. Kill the first wave, then the remaining Rocketeer/Mortar Soldier, then the Mage who froze the cannons and then a second wave of adds. Always use Metamorphosis to kill the Mage. Timing is the key. From this point, your priority is to dpsing the ship and killing Rocketeers/Mortar Soldiers. You have to kill adds on your ship only when the Mage will freeze Cannons. Kor'kron Axethrowers/Skybreaker Riflemans can be ignored, because they are not a threat. Remember to avoid rockets - in heroic version, it has knock back effect. In this try, my ship had 250k HP at the time of the destruction of an enemy ship. Good Luck and Have Fun!

I tried this over 24 times, on 10 man normal, can't get their ship under 60% before mine blows up.
I've seen every video, read every article, still can't get it down.
tried it as blood and frost DK, no difference, time wasted jumping on ship the adds appear and burn it down to fast, fight lasts not even 2 minutes...

Finished this as a 89 DK. I was having trouble the first few times until I remembered my time in the cannon as a dps back in Wrath that trivialized the battle.
Aim your cannon at the Rocketeers near the back of the ship
, and kill two birds with one stone.
Nuke the adds on your ship and the battle mage that spawns. Rinse and repeat.

After 16 failed attempts to solo this, I finally got it. Surprisingly, the most simple strategy got the job done. The following worked for me, a lvl 90 blood dk around 460 ilvl.
-Prebattle gather heat with -1-, as soon as you can hit the other ship, do so, and start unloading all you can, aiming for the axethrowers, always building up over 90 heat before using -2-.
-Ignore everything else until the enemy mage freezes your cannon. At this point, jump across, kill him asap, and jump back, pop an aoe if you can to weaken the adds in your ship, but otherwise ignore them and just jump back to your turret as soon as you can.
-Rinse and repeat, with enough shooting and some slight luck you will get the enemy ship down just before yours would.

Having trouble finding the gunship after clearing the first two groups and the scripted frosty dragon?
Leave the raid instance, right click on your unit frame and reset your instances. This will soft-reset the raid and upon re-entering and re-teleporting to the Rampart of Skulls you'll see the flying hunk of junk you came here to solo.

I was having problems getting this done as Blood, so a person on MMO-C advised doing it as Frost (489 iLevel, mostly LFR dps gear)... Well that was the ticket! The extra burst DPS made killing the adds a matter of pushing two to three buttons instead of a full rotation or two, saving a LOT of time. It worked for me, your mileage may vary.
It's a very simple set of rules: start fight with a high stack of heat, in the 90's as the other ship approaches, once it's in range, nuke it and start firing the main gun until your heat is in the 90's, then nuke again. Every so often you will get frozen out of the gun, at this point wait on your ship for the adds, nuke them down, hop over to the other ship, kill the mage in the middle, then hop back to your gun. I did this three times, I think, and it worked like a charm.
Oh, and make sure you have the rocket pack equipped before battle :( I made this mistake and had to sit through a couple minutes of adds beating on me to die and start over.

Kill Adds on your ship!
I had a lot of trouble with this - since I've never raided this instance, but the key is to kill the adds on your own ship. They do a lot of damage to your ship, and if you kill em, it's a pretty easy fight (just follow the other instructions in the other comments).
IE. Get jetpack, kill mage when spawns, zoom back and resume boombing!

This might be obvious for some people, but I was wiping multiple times on my solo attempts because of this: when in the cannon, if your target bubble is more on the side of the ship and than the deck, then for some reason it won't do as much damage.
I ended up aiming directly at the area that the mage spawns at.
To test it, I tried to aim at the rocket dwarfs on the front edge and only got 25% of the boat down. When I tried to aim at the middle of the deck and ignored the dwarfs when in the cannon, the boat dropped much faster.
As always, try and lay an AOE the guys at the railing when you go over and go back, and aoe the guys on your ship before getting back in the cannon.

ok solo artists , i wiped and wiped on this no matter what i tried , the only thing that worked was , leave the instance , go all the way out , outside , click your portrait and reset all instances , yes reset it , it does not wipe your progress , go back in and wa-laa , i got it easily , even got the I'm on a Boat achievement , before i could not even come close to beating it
for some reason if you go straight to this encounter while your running ICC after the 1st 2 bosses , this its harder then if you try this encounter , leave , reset and go back
hope this helps , so after wipe after wipe after wipe i did it 1st time EASILY after the reset and still got the I'm on a Boat achievement

For the purposes of soloing this, it is important to remember that damage to the enemy ship can only be caused by the cannon, and you will only have one cannon firing. Thus, maximizing the amount of time on the cannon is the most important variable.
To do this, I recommend the following sequence:
1. Use gun until the freeze occurs.
2. After the freeze, immediately jump to the enemy ship.
3. While on the enemy ship, ONLY attack the Mage in the middle, the one responsible for the freeze. Kill him and immediately return to your ship (use a DOT and immediately return if you have one).
4. Kill the units that come through the portal. A preemptive AOE is ideal, but any AOE will be quick.
5. Immediately return to the cannon and begin the sequence again.
Tips:
A. Begin charging the cannon for heat as soon as the encounter starts, before the enemy ship is even visible. Also, begin firing on the ship as soon as it is in range.
B. Do not let the cannon overheat, and use the "1" attack until the cannon gets close to overheating, then use "2" and begin again.
C. When firing the cannon, aim at NPCs on the enemy ship as you will kill the NPCs while damaging the ship.

Literally every second counts in this
After wipe after wipe i did this as a 523 Frost DK using my dots and D&D on the adds that come on the ship then imediately go back into the cannon and let my dots kill them or if they didnt saurfang finishes the job.
Try when you start to hit the gunship with a fully heated round as soon as the fight starts so warm your cannon up during the preflight.
Always make sure you hit number 2 just before it overheats and try to use the cannon to kill the marksman.

Post-Pandaland, this fight has been seriously nerfed. Damage from guns now scales with level, meaning you destroy the enemy ship in about one full-heat shot. If you're 90+, just mash buttons and drool on something. You can't possibly lose. For posterity, when this fight was a personal skill check, post follows which includes mekanix stuph. You can ignore it now. Also, I'm very sad about this.
FYI, this is SOLO:
Many good comments are below, but if you're having difficulty putting it all together into a single reliable strategy... I've run this weekly for several months now and it's become a breeze, though I had ZERO prior experience in ICC. As of tonight, I won't be running it anymore, so here are what I've been focusing on during the fight:
1. Get & EQUIP your rocket pack. Get used to testing it a few times (have fun w/ this) before the fight to ensure you've equipped it properly. Make sure it's on one of your action bars.
2. Talk to Saurfang or your dwarf to start the fight.
3. Jump on your closest cannon. Start firing it up and feel free to take a few shots at the enemy ship before the fight begins. At 90 or below, you're good to take another shot. Above 90, wait as your gun cools (if fight hasn't started yet) or release your heat w/ button 2 (during the fight). If you release it somewhere in the 80s, it's not too big a deal, as long as you don't do that consistently.
Fight begins:
1. Ignore the adds in front and the middle of the ship. Way in the back will be two adds that you can barely see. Click on one of these to target it. This way you'll know when it's dead, since they're out of range for health bars. The first time you're doing this, you should have time to click one before the fight actually starts. During the fight, you can click them while you're heating up your guns. Release a 90+ heat blast on the first add, you will no longer have it targeted because it's dead, and begin building up heat on the 2nd add. Click 2nd add, release 90+ heat, it dies.
2. Now you can shoot anywhere on the ship you like, as long as you're hitting the ship. (It is possible to shoot over the ship, so aim at least a LITTLE.) You can fire at the mobs in the front, if you like, but it's unnecessary. Remember to release heat at ~90. Before you've been on this step for too long, you'll see/hear the enemy captain call for a mage to "shut down those cannons", and you'll see a mage running toward the center of the deck. You have about three seconds left on the guns before she boots you off, so release whatever heat you have left. With practice, you'll get a feel for when to release your heat, but early is better than late. If you release early, just keep shooting while you can.
3. Your gun is frozen and you're booted off. Head to the center of your own ship and kill THREE ADDS. There will always be THREE. If you only see two, don't get ahead of yourself and jump to the other ship. Wait for the 3rd add. If you don't see any, you're about to, so wait for them. The timing of the whole fight is very, very important, and patience here will have more impact on whether you win or wipe than any other factor.
4. Once the THREE adds on your ship are down, run toward the enemy mage. If you're ranged, you can probably reach her from your own deck. If you're a melee class with a couple "ranged" attacks that don't reach very far, you'll probably have to rocket jump next to her. With some practice, you can aim your jump right next to her as you're running toward the edge of your ship. Kill her, ignore all other adds.
5. Your guns are unfrozen. If you're on the enemy ship, run toward one of your guns and aim a rocket jump right next to it. Hop back on your guns.
6. Focus two mobs in back, get heat to ~90, unload on each mob to kill it, continue DPS on the ship, unload before the mage freezes your cannons, patiently wait for & kill the three mobs on your own boat, kill enemy mage, return to guns, etc. etc.
Reading the comments below after running this for a few months, they make more sense now. I'd add some things here or there (which I've included here) and I think those posters assumed I already knew them, as experience eventually makes things so obvious that you no longer realize you're doing them. I walked in with no experience at all, I wiped several times the first week getting the rhythm of the fight, and what I've just posted is all it took. It was all about timing. I was under-geared when I started on a fresh 90, I'm now 550+, and my performance (i.e. remaining health of my ship at fight's end) has not improved whatsoever. It's just timing... only timing.
Well, timing and aim.

I just solo this on my pally on 10M HM, I notice when I used Light's Hammer on 2 of the 4 gunners and go kill mage and then Judgment one of the 2 and jump over into the cannon they would bug sometimes and not do any dmg to the ship.
Also notice that on my lock since he would have hes pet on the ship they didn't toss flames on it but on my pally they do since no one els is on there.

Not sure if it was a bug but today Oct 17th 2014 patch 6.0.2 i did the gunboat on 10 man and i heated up the gun preflight and then i let rip with a 100 heated round and it ONE SHOT the ship.
Not sure if this is intended or not but if it is then the Gunboat is a absolute joke of a fight now.

I ran 25-man and one shot the ship without realizing it. I had hopped onto the horde ship and got stranded above ICC. Thankfully I was able to levitate back down to ICC but I'd suggest NOT being on the horde ship after firing a fully charged cannon.

As of 6.0.2 - The Loot ship cannons now scale with item level. As of today (Oct. 18th, 2014), I hit the horde ship for 1 million+ damage, instantly killing it at full charge (well, around 96, anyway). As a 90 with item level 544 - Super easy now.

i've never done ICC before in any form. So, tonight, I decided to try the 10 man on my nearly-geared mage to see what it was like. I was really nervous and read up on this, and if I could skip it, and solo strategy. I equipped the rocket pack, which is a shirt, if you were wondering, and practiced 3 or 4 jumps. Then, I started the encounter, and burned the other ship down in, no lie, about 8 seconds.
I got an achieve called "I'm on a boat" because I never even had time to think about going over to the other ship.
So, that happened.

6.1************USEFUL TO HELP ON BUGGED GUNSHIP*************
If the enemy gunship is to far away:
1) "In game suicide( if you solo this)" or wait for the reset (your ship health will be at 0%) .
2) Take rockets on the goblin put it on.
3) Retry the encounter and sit on a canon , and fire canon in front off you (before you see any ship): the enemy ship will automaticaly dock to you. (keep firing at it and use rocket to kill central mage = wont freeze your canons) canon-kill mage - canon-kill mage etc.. till the gunship is dead.

I always get that I cannot use the rocket cause im "in combat"
I figured out how to do it, at least with my shaman. I ran toward the enemy ship in ghost dog, jumped, and spammed flame shock at the battle mage, he died, and I was able to use cannons again. Im pretty sure every class has some sort of ranged attack like the rogue's daggers and warrior's throw weapon....may just take a couple jumps. You wont die by falling, it will just spawn you back on the ship.

I had to repeat this a few times as it is still bugged with 6.1 but I then easily soloed it in 6 seconds heroic: jump on any gunship immediately after start. As soon as the enemy ships is approaching, start shooting it frantically. It will explode without the need to engage in any melee battle.

I used the common tactics of spamming shots while approaching the other ship (level 96), and it seemed to work... except it seems like I finished off the ship exactly when the mage was casting the portal and the cannon freeze spell.
Result: cannon frozen, enemy on board but not attacking just standing still for a few seconds, and then it seemed like the sinking enemy ship's tail swept our deck
and took me with it.
Next: loading screen, and I am stuck between some obscure parts of the (enemy) Alliance ship (which is just hanging there in space, no NPCs, no Horde ship in sight), with no way out. Ended up hearthing, and upon re-entering the raid the event was marked as completed.
Yet another way for this event to bug out...

I was doing this solo at lvl110 as a paladin with no problem aside from me being an idiot. What i didnt realize is that the Rocket Pack is an equipable Shirt Item, I had put it on my action bar and kept trying to use it when the mage comes up but I got an error that it can't be used in combat. But then I tried it out before my next attempt and it equipped and then it worked fine during combat.

FYI, at 110 and on normal 25 mode completed the encounter quickly after going over just once. Got "I'm on a Boat" and I flew away on the horde ship. No choice but to suicide off edge.
Came back to the ramp to loot the chest. NO SHIP.
Even though I won the encounter, the friendly ship cannot be reached. This happened before on the PTR, but this is 7.2.5 Live.
Does anyone have an idea how to reset the ship (yes, I reset all instances, no luck) I hate to think I cannot progress any further, and not being able for another difficulty, I am sunk for the whole week. Any replies encouraged. Thanks.
EDIT: I feel silly, choosing
DEATHBRINGER'S RISE
brought me up to the higher level where the ship now moved to. I assumed it went to the same spot the encounter started. RAMPART OF SKULLS was the bad location and the place where the ship was missing. I hope this helps someone with the same issue.

This is soloable at a decently high lvl. On my 103(yeah I know) Rogue, after reading this awesome article, I was able to solo this part of the dngn. As soon as you can use the cannon target the balloon portion and just fire away. By the time he calls for the mage the damage is done and they have to disengage.. 😉 Tried using the rocket pack first but it wouldn't work for me so I gave up on it(grappling hook will not work either.).. Thank-you for taking the time to write this! I was lost as to what I should have been doing especially after the mage froze my cannons!
