The
Shadowlands
prequel novel Shadows Rising is now available, and we have a fun tidbit to share from it - the Zappy Boy nickname popularized by players for Zekhan is now canon!
Originally an unnamed Shaman seen lighting up his enemies in the Lordaeron
Battle for Azeroth
cinematic trailer, the unnamed Shaman quickly became a fan-favorite. Nicknamed Zappy Boi, the character was thought to be a one-off, but fans were delighted to see his return in the "Old Soldier" cinematic alongside Saurfang, in which the young Shaman convinces the eponymous old soldier to fight for the true ideals of the Horde. Cinematic Director Terran Gregory then
revealed the characters true name
, Zekhan, whose popularity exploded both in-game and out:
Following the cinematic, players saw Zekhan make his appearance in game as well, aiding Saurfang's rebellious movement against Sylvanas during
Battle for Azeroth
. In an interview with Taliesin & Evitel, Lead Game Designer Kevin Martens revealed that while Zekhan was always meant to be a character, the characters immense popularity
prompted them to grow his role
beyond what was original envisioned. As a result, the young Shaman becomes a recurring character in Saurfang's quest chain, first helping
fight off Sylvanas' assassins
, then attempting to intervene in Saurfang's fateful duel with the Banshee Queen, and finally remaining in Orgrimmar to
tell stories of his friend
. He even makes an appearance within the
Horrific Vision of Orgrimmar
, and if Shadow's Rising is any indication, could very well have a role to play in Shadowlands as well!
Without going into spoilers, Zekhan plays a pivotal role in
Shadows Rising
. He's initially sent as a diplomat to ease tensions between the Horde and Queen Talanji, who has become a bit distrustful of peace after Dazar'alor was sacked by the Alliance and her father murdered. As the plot thickens, and we learn of Nathanos' assignment to defeat Bwonsamdi, as well as
why
Sylvanas wants him weakened, and Zekhan finds himself speaking with Bwonsamdi directly. Still without going into spoilers, Zekhan goes through an interesting bit of character growth and learns many things from the Loa of Death.
