With the release of Wrath of the Lich King Classic, we will have a few new external buffs that can be cast on players to enhance their damage, healing, or tanking abilities. External buffs have always been a topic of debate especially amongst players looking to compete for dealing the most damage on bosses. In this article we'll talk about a few different ways the ranking website
Warcraft Logs
could handle the new external buffs in Wrath of the Lich King with a focus on one in particular, the
潜行者
's
嫁祸诀窍
.
External Buffs on Warcraft Logs in Burning Crusade Classic
Throughout Burning Crusade Classic we saw many examples of players achieving astronomical DPS numbers from being fed multiple
嗜血
,
激活
, or
能量灌注
s in a single fight - making it extremely difficult for anyone without similar treatment to compete with them. To combat this, Warcraft Logs posted a number next to each ranking denoting how many external buffs that player received so that it was clear which players were receiving huge numbers of external buffs and which were not.

External Buffs on Warcraft Logs in Wrath of the Lich King Classic
In Wrath there are a few new external buffs that get added to the mix, most notably
嫁祸诀窍
and
邪恶狂热
. These two buffs are a bit different than previous buffs because it can be (relatively) easily calculated how much damage they add to the player who receives them. With a spell like
嗜血
on a
潜行者
for example they will get some extra attacks which is extra damage, some of those extra attacks might generate extra energy, which will result in some more ability usage - and it is almost impossible to say precisely how much damage was added by Bloodlust. Without being able to calculate the damage gain precisely, there really wasn't much to be done other than indicate the number and type of external buffs a player received.
With
嫁祸诀窍
and
邪恶狂热
just as simple percentage damage buffs without any attack speed bonus or spell cost reduction or critical strike chance bonus - it is actually feasible to calculate how much damage these buffs provide to a player who receives one. With that being the case, some people would say that the damage gain should be attributed to the person who cast the buff, rather than who received it. After all, the caster is the one actually providing the value to the raid. However, that would open up some other potentially negative side effects as well. Lets talk about three main ways to handle these new external buffs and the pros and cons of each method.
Method 1
The damage gain from the buff is attributed to the player who receives the buff
.
Pros:
This is exactly how every other external buff is handled and it is simple. It is simple to handle for Warcraft Logs, and it is easy for users to understand. It makes the damage ranking on the website match as close as possible to the damage dealt that the player sees in-game.
Cons:
This allows buff stacking just like every other external buff to boost up another player's parse to absurd levels. Someone could potentially receive
嫁祸诀窍
from multiple different Rogues throughout a fight to maintain the +15% damage buff the entire time - good luck competing with that if you don't have similar treatment. Degenerate buff stacking like this was possible in Burning Crusade and will still be possible in Wrath via the other external buffs, but adding Tricks of the Trade as yet another external buff to stack makes the most extreme cases of buff stacking that much worse.
Unfortunately for a
潜行者
trying to score an individual parse, this method would incentivize them to actually
not
use their
嫁祸诀窍
since it is a energy loss that does not contribute to their own parse. That would free up around 30 energy per minute and free up a glyph slot that could be utilized for something else that increases personal damage. Best estimates available at this time put not casting or glyphing Tricks of the Trade at around a +1.5% to +2.5% personal DPS gain for the rogue.
Method 2
The damage gain from the buff is attributed to the player who cast the buff
.
Pros:
This method would attribute the damage gain to the player (
潜行者
or
死亡骑士
) who actually provided the damage gain to the raid, making the ranking system more closely measure the player's total damage contribution to the raid. This is a unique circumstance where this could be done and it generally cannot be done to measure the contribution from things like
嗜血
or
破甲攻击
or
兽群领袖
.
Of these three methods, this is the only method that actually incentivizes a parse-minded
潜行者
to cast
嫁祸诀窍
on cooldown and always on the player who would generate the most damage from it. This closely aligns the parse-optimal strategy with what the Rogue should be doing to be optimal for their raid in most (but not all) circumstances.
Cons:
The major point against this method is that it is by far the most prone to abuse. Do you recall
术士
rankings on
穆鲁
in Burning Crusade? The only feasible way to parse on that boss as a Warlock was to go against what was usually optimal for the raid (lots of
暗影箭
and only sometimes Seed) and instead spam
腐蚀之种
as much as possible. There will be plenty of multi target bosses throughout Wrath of the Lich King that have classes popping off like Warlocks on M'uru.
Now imagine a
潜行者
who casts
嫁祸诀窍
on that one Warlock who gets to pop off with AoE on a fight. If the 15% damage gain is attributed to the Rogue, that one Rogue receives a massive boost to their parse. This would essentially cause any boss where any other class has a parse "cheese" like
穆鲁
to also become a parse cheese for Rogues as well.
Method 3
The damage gain from the buff is attributed to neither player's parse, but recorded and measured
.
Pros:
This is definitely the least abusable method for handling
嫁祸诀窍
and
邪恶狂热
because it essentially removes them from the boss parsing game. You could see how much damage is being provided by your
死亡骑士
s and
潜行者
s via their buffs, but you would never be at a parsing disadvantage for not having them or for not casting them on optimal DPS targets.
Cons:
As long as a
潜行者
is not gaining damage on their parse for casting
嫁祸诀窍
, the energy that is spent could be spent on something else to increase personal damage. This method suffers the same problem as
Method 1
that a parse-oriented Rogue would gain about 1.5% to 2.5% personal damage from
not
casting Tricks of the Trade and
not
using the very powerful Tricks of the Trade glyph. This is not ideal because it incentivizes a player seeking to parse to do something that conflicts with what is optimal for the raid team as a whole. That being said, the potential gain is fairly limited and won't even be relevant once the rogue obtains two pieces of
影刃战甲
in
冰冠堡垒
- then it becomes a personal DPS gain and a raid DPS gain to press Tricks as often as possible!
Conclusion
Are you a player who likes to compete for boss parses, or someone who always plays for the team regardless of how it effects your parse? How do you think external buffs should be handled in Wrath of the Lich King? Let us know in the comments below!
