Making Those Tough Decisions In-Game

Recently a user, who insisted on anonymity, approached me on IRC and asked me for in-game advice. Not knowing what he was going to ask, I blindly agreed and he explained the situation to me. Basically, he was having a hard time contemplating as to whether he should purchase an heirloom bow to benefit his level 40 hunter or if he should save his valor badges to upgrade his level 80 Death Knight's gear. Bear in mind that his level 40 hunter was his first character ever and that he plans on leveling him up to 80 at some point, and his Death Knight is his main character that's well-geared.
Much to my surprise, I was able to give him what he called the "best piece of advice someone could ever give" in spite of the fact that I have very little experience with WoTLK content. I didn't tell him what decision he should have made, nor did I even tell what to do specifically for that matter; instead, I basically told him that he should decide for himself what gear he should pick first, factoring in which piece of gear which affect him now and which piece of gear would affect him in the long run. That was it—the rest I left up to him.
That being said, that brings me to this question:
When faced in situations similar these how do you make your decision?
What do you take into account when contemplating a decision like this? If so, were you happy with your decision later or did you wish you hadn't made that decision?
