Jeff Chamberlain, VP of Story and Franchise at Blizzard, sat down with IGN to discuss the iconic
Diablo 4
announcement cinematic and how it got so dark.
Diablo 4
Game Director Luis Barriga wanted something that feels like a dungeon crawl that turns into a nightmare scenario.
The style of the cinematic was very different than
WoW
and
Overwatch
, leading many artists to eagerly sign up for the project and try something new. It was a passion project for many at the studio.
It was a deliberate goal to have the cinematic end up much darker than
Diablo 3
, driving the point that there's not a happy ending every time.
While the
Diablo 3
cinematic opened with a focus on supernatural forces in Sanctuary,
Diablo 4
purposely takes a different approach, using throwaway characters (the scholar and swordsmen) to tell a story instead of famous heroes.
The intent of using these anonymous characters, who start off wanting to find gold and end up way in over their heads, is to make you sympathize and connect with them, so it's an emotional punch when the ending happens. It's hard to talk about angels and demons since they're so different from our reality, but using ordinary characters make the story more relatable.
Blizzard would not answer who the weird cultist guy is at the end - who do you think he is?
The ending was intended to be nightmarish, beautiful, and horrible at once.
Diablo 4
is still in early stages of development and Blizzard is still deciding how dark they want to get in future cinematics and in-game storytelling.
