All the quest steps to swap and return to a previous Covenant that you have abandoned are now available on the Shadowlands Beta. We go over all the steps that are needed in order to swap Covenants, and how long it'll take.
Covenant Overview
Please remember that this is Beta and subject to change at any point. This article was written during Shadowlands Build 35854.
Changing Covenant Basics
Here are some of the basics that you should know when swapping Covenants:
Joining a Covenant for the first time is easy. Talk to the ambassador of the Covenant you wish to be and click through a couple confirmation windows.
Returning to a Covenant that you have abandoned is much harder and requires the completion of some quests.
When returning to a Covenant that you have abandoned, you should retain any unlocks that you accomplished before you left, including Renown and Sanctum Upgrades.
Changing Covenants - Returning to a Previous Covenant
Step 1: Ambassador Chat
The first step is to talk to the Ambassador of the Covenant you wish to rejoin. As
previously mentioned
, they're upset that you have betrayed their trust and tell you to
Prove Your Worth
.
Step 2: Prove Your Worth Quest
After the Ambassador chat, you'll need to complete the
Prove Your Worth
quest by completing objectives in the relevant zone until the bar reaches 100%.
Kyrian:
证明你的价值
- Complete tasks in Bastion.
Necrolord:
证明你的价值
- Complete tasks in Maldraxxus.
Night Fae:
证明你的价值
- Complete tasks in Ardenweald.
Venthyr:
证明你的价值
- Complete tasks in Revendreth.
You can do any of the following objectives to progress the bar as long as it's in the correct zone.
Kill Rares and Rare Elites
Collect Treasures
Complete World Quests
Defeat Dungeon Bosses
While you can do all of the following, the most efficient way we've found to complete the bar is to spam dungeons. Difficulty doesn't matter, and each kill of a dungeon boss in that zone will net you 12% of a bar.
We'd recommend completing 2 dungeons with 4 bosses apiece, and complete a single World Quest to finish the objective. If you're a Necrolord, you can do Theatre of Pain and skip the World Quest.
Once you're done, head back to Oribos and turn the quest in where the Covenant's Ambassador will tell you that they need some time to figure out if they want to let you rejoin (spoiler: they will).
Step 3: Wait for the Next Weekly Reset
This one is relatively straightforward. Make sure you've actually handed in the
Prove Your Worth
quest from the previous step so that you don't waste a week.
Step 4: Rebuild Our Trust Quest
Once the Weekly Reset is complete, the Covenant Ambassador will have a new quest for you called
Rebuild Our Trust
. This quest asks you to do the exact same thing as
Prove Your Worth
.
Kyrian:
重建信任
- Complete tasks in Bastion.
Necrolord:
重建信任
- Complete tasks in Maldraxxus.
Night Fae:
重建信任
- Complete tasks in Ardenweald.
Venthyr:
重建信任
- Complete tasks in Revendreth.
We again recommend completing 2 dungeons with 4 bosses and completing a single World Quest unless you're a Necrolord who does Theatre of Pain.
When the objective is complete, you can return to Oribos to turn in the quest.
Turning in the quest immediately swaps your Covenant.
Once again, turning in the quest
immediately
swaps your Covenant. If there's anything that you want or need to do in your previous Covenant, you must do it before you turn in the quest.
Repeat?
Once you join your new Covenant, you can immediately start new steps to rejoin another Covenant if you wish by grabbing the new
Prove Your Worth
quest.
How Long Does It Take to Swap Covenants
It takes one Weekly Reset plus however much time you need to complete both the
Prove Your Worth
and
Rebuild Our Trust
quests. The two quests should take under an hour each, plus however much time it takes to get to the Weekly Reset.
If it's Wednesday and you want to change, you're going to need to wait almost a full week.
If it's Monday night and you want to change, you can rejoin your Covenant in under 24 hours.
In other words, you can swap Covenants with a week.
I personally completed
Prove Your Worth
last night at about 9:00 PM ET (thanks
Jaydaa
for helping). Shadowlands Beta Weekly Reset occurred at Noon ET and I had rejoined my new Covenant by 1:00 PM ET. It took me less than 24 hours because it was so close to the Weekly Reset.
Conclusion and Opinions
Due to the way the system works, it seems like you'll only be able to swap Covenants
once a week
, due to the reliance on the Weekly Reset to complete the chain. The actual quest itself is easy and doesn't take up a lot of work or gold, making it relatively low effort if you actually want to swap. However, you will have to pay in time, as waiting for the next Weekly Reset could be a long way away.
Gaming the System
Because you rejoin your Covenant once you turn in the Rebuild Our Trust quest, players can game the system. Completing Rebuild Our Trust but not turning in the quest right away will allow for a mid-week swap. It could be used after a difficult boss to optimize for the next boss, after your Guild's weekly raid to swap Covenants for Mythic+ or PvP and so on. Should a player do this, they can immediately start the
Prove Your Worth
quest to rejoin the Covenant they just left, in order to change back before next week's raid.
Week 1: Player is Necrolord. Completes Prove Your Worth for Kyrian to prep for next week.
Week 2: Player raids as Necrolord, then completes Rebuild Our Trust and changes to Kyrian for the rest of the week for Mythic+. Player complete Prove Your Worth to return to Necrolord next week.
Week 3: Player completes Rebuild Our Trust before Raid swapping back to Necrolord for raid. Completes Prove Your Worth for Kyrian to prep for next week.
Week 4: Player raids as Necrolord, then completes Rebuild Our Trust and changes to Kyrian for the rest of the week for Mythic+. Player complete Prove Your Worth to return to Necrolord next week.
This system does allow some flexibility, as every other week players will be able to be part of 2 Covenants swapping mid week. And just to point this out, this other week cadence does happen to line up with the cadence of Tyrannical and Fortified Mythic+ affixes, in case you really only wanted to play one of these affixes.
The option to swap mid week honestly seems kind of weird and there were some thoughts from players that a Covenant swap would automatically happen if on the next Weekly Reset after you completed all the requirements. This would prevent gaming the system and limit the optimization that would be possible. In addition, it may be possible to gain Renown in two Covenants every week with this system, gaining Renown in one Covenant before completing the Rebuild Our Trust and then gaining Renown with the second Covenant after you turn it in. With Blizzard's goals of the Covenant system being part of your Identity, this mid week swapping seems a lot more like gaming the system than intended and very similar to the thought process of why Conduits were changed. Certain players will feel like in order to be optimal, they'll need to game the Covenant swapping system, by collecting Renown in two different Covenants, prepping which Covenant they think they would need to be next week and holding their Covenant swap until the correct point every week.
I think Blizzard may change the Covenant swap to automatically happen on the Weekly Reset to prevent gaming the system, instead of requiring a second quest. It's not like the Rebuild Our Trust quest is any different, has different lore or requires you to do anything different than Prove Your Worth.
Final Thoughts
In the end though, how effective is swapping Covenants currently with regards to player power? If you're able to collect Renown in both Covenants, the loss will be minimal since you'll still have your Soulbind unlocks from Renown. However, if Blizzard doesn't allow you to gain Renown in both Covenants or makes it so that the Covenant swap happens on the Weekly Reset, your Renown and Soulbinds will be behind and will need to be caught up. You may be missing Conduit sockets, important traits or even a full Soulbind! In the end thought, each player values things differently, and it's up to you to decide if swapping Covenants is going to be worth it to you and your group. Will the loss of Soulbind traits and Conduit slots be worth the new Covenant signature ability and Class Ability?
