Throughout Battle for Azeroth, trading restrictions on weapons has been relatively strict. In Shadowlands, these trading restrictions appear to have been relaxed, only requiring an equal or higher item level weapon that you can equip.
Previous Trading Rules in Battle for Azeroth
Previously, in order to trade weapons in Battle for Azeroth, you needed an equal or higher item level weapon that:
You can use on your class that is soulbound to you.
Was designed for your main stat -- INT vs AGI vs STR.
Requires the same number of "hands" -- 1H vs 2H.
This was very restrictive in Battle for Azeroth, with a Mage getting a Wand drop, but being unable to trade a Staff. Alternatively, a Protection Paladin getting a Strength 1H weapon and being unable to trade an Intellect 1H weapon.
New Shadowlands Restrictions
In Shadowlands, it seems that the trading restrictions have been severely relaxed. You now only need an equal or higher item level weapon that:
You can use on your class that is soulbound to you.
You no longer need a weapon that uses the same number of hands, or even the same main stat on the weapon to trade another weapon! We've also heard that this doesn't apply to offhands, so this is limited to weapons only, but it's still a good change.
This is likely to achieve parity with weapon tokens from Castle Nathria, as you'll probably be able to trade weapon tokens around and weapon tokens can be converted into any weapon that you want!
