Frances Townsend has stepped down as Executive Sponsor of the ABK Women's Network, following
her ill-fated email deflecting allegations of systemic sexual harassment within Blizzard Entertainment
, which Activation Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick later called
a tone deaf response
. This became a centerpiece of an
open letter published by employees
, criticizing Activision's response to the allegations made in the California lawsuit and calling for Townsend to step down as Executive Sponsor of the ABK Employee Women’s Network as a result of the damaging nature of her statement.
Excerpt from the open letter published by Activision Blizzard employees, in response to Townsend's disastrous email.
As reported in an
extensive article by Shannon Liao
of The Washington Post, Townsend conducted a Women's Network Zoom meeting with 500 employees in order to hear Blizzard women tell their stories. During the call, she purportedly defended her email, shifting blame by saying the language was in accordance with legal counsel and that the end result no longer sounded much like her voice. Having reached the maximum number of participants on the call, management initially said it would share a recording afterward, though several days later decided that the company was unable to distribute the recording, as it was deemed inappropriate to share personal concerns voiced by employees. Interestingly, Townsend is reported to have stepped down as Executive Sponsor of the Women's Network that same day, July 23rd, although it must have been fairly quiet, as calling for her dismissal from the post was a main point in the
open letter published by employees
three days later on July 26th.
Already facing intense scrutiny on social media, Townsend has since deleted her Twitter account, following further backlash after highlighting an article from The Atlantic titled
The New Moral Code of America's Elite
with the text “
the Problem With Whistleblowing
,” which led to Townsend blocking both fans and even Activision Blizzard employees who spoke out against her on the social media platform. Both
Shannon Liao
and
Jason Schreier
of Bloomberg have independently reported that Townsend is still employed at the company however, presumably continuing in her other roles as executive vice president for corporate affairs, corporate secretary, and chief compliance officer.
