Diablo 4's Developer Update Livestream in April went into great detail about the various endgame systems Diablo 4 has to offer. In this article, we will take an in-depth look at the Paragon Board, the most important endgame character progression system, and explain how it works in Diablo 4!
Diablo 4 Developer Endgame Update Summary Diablo 4 Content Overview
Paragon Board Basics
The Paragon Board
unlocks after reaching level 50
on your character. From then on out you can earn
1 Paragon point every 25% of a level
(4 Paragon points per level) to spend on various nodes within the Paragon Board system.
Each region of Sanctuary grants you another 4 Paragon points
after reaching the fifth and final milestone of the Renown system.
A
total of 220 Paragon points
can be earned and allocated which caps out the finite Paragon Board system. (200 Paragon points total at level 100 + 20 Paragon points through Renown from each region in Sanctuary)
The developers designed the system so that even when playing for a short period of time, the time put into the game feels meaningful.
Renown Overview
Starting Board
After unlocking the Paragon Board system at level 50, every character starts on their respective class's intro board with various different node types, including the
Board Attachment Gate
at the end of the board which lets you choose and attach the next board.
Nodes
Here are all the different node types and their effects which can be present on a Paragon Board.
Normal Nodes
provide a +5 stat bonus to either Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, or Dexterity.
Magic Nodes
provide a more specific stat bonus which is often rarer to find on items compared to the Paragon Board.
Rare Nodes
have powerful base effects and additional bonus effects if certain thresholds are met. There are around 10 or more Rare nodes per board.
Legendary Nodes
offer a powerful, build-defining effect. As seen in our example, Legendary node effects can also scale with stats like Intelligence. So far, we have only seen Paragon Boards with exactly 1 Legendary node per board.
Glyph Sockets
are special nodes on the Paragon Board. Whenever you unlock a Glyph Socket, you can use the node to socket a
Paragon Glyph
into it. This Paragon Glyph will either actively empower nodes around the Glyph Socket or will gain additional bonuses based on the surrounding nodes. Additionally, these Glyphs can also provide bonuses when you reach certain stat thresholds. Paragon Glyphs
can be unequipped for free
from the sockets and
reused
at any point.
The
Board Attachment Gate
is the "connecting node" between two Paragon Boards. When you invest a Paragon point into this node, you will get +5 to all stats (Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, and Dexterity) and you will also be able to choose your next Paragon Board.
Paragon Glyphs
The following images show various iterations of Paragon Glyphs of different rarities:
Glyphs can be
leveled
after completing a Nightmare Dungeon to increase its effectiveness, for example by increasing the bonuses or the affected radius. Unlike Diablo 3's Legendary Gem system, gaining Glyph experience appears to be deterministic by allocating flat amounts of experience to a Paragon Glyph.
Board Selection
All Paragon Boards are
predetermined
and showcase
a certain class theme
. Below you can see two Rogue Paragon Boards—the "Eldritch Bounty" board revolves around imbuements while the "Cheap Shot" board focuses on dealing damage to nearby crowd-controlled enemies.
As previously mentioned, you can choose your next Paragon Board when reaching a Board Attachment Gate node. After choosing a Paragon Board, you will enter the Board Preview Mode and be able to rotate your board of choice to your liking.
