We've compiled an initial list of the best and essential addons for TBC Classic, including UI, Questing, Auction House, Raids, and Bags.
Addons can be a very personal thing. Some people don't use them at all, which certainly makes life easier after new content patches. Some people just load a few they consider essential, or only those addons their raid team is using. And then there are others (like me) who love experimenting with all kinds of addons and gizmos to make their lives easier in WoW.
I like information. I like LOTS of information. So whenever I have to go through betas or other periods when addons aren't working, I feel adrift without my constant stream of addons feeding me all kinds of data from a variety of sources.
Thankfully, the dedicated addon writers of WoW have been hard at work, modifying and updating and changing their code to make many of your favorite addons usable in Burning Crusade Classic. Overall, the addon scene is in much, much better shape going into Burning Crusade than it was going into Classic for the first time -- likely because it's less of a stretch just going from Classic to Burning Crusade Classic. There are some notable players missing in action at this point, but for the most part, Burning Crusade Classic will not mean losing too many of your favorite addons.
Don't forget to donate to addon authors whose products you use regularly.
They put in very long hours and a lot of work to make your experience more enjoyable. Even a small donation is a big deal.
Managing Addon Transition to Burning Crusade Classic
Mods that are working fine in Burning Crusade Pre-Patch (and even in BCC Beta) may not end up working in Burning Crusade Classic right away. This is particularly true of any addons that will pull specific data from Outlands, including information about quests, mob or item locations, or gear. A mod that handles mail won't be much affected by the transition, but one that needs to show you the locations of mining node will be. Give addon authors a little time to adjust, as they will need to be implementing big changes to many mods shortly after release.
Part of managing this is knowing where to get the latest release of the addon. This isn't always going to be Curseforge or one of the other repositories. It may be the addon's website or Discord, or on Github. Where possible, I will try to link to the source of the latest information for that addon.
Turning Off Lua Errors
Lua error messages give important feedback to what's going wrong with an addon. Please copy any errors you are having with a mod and post them to a place where the addon author can see and act on them.
However, once you've done that, having repeated Lua error windows popping up can be very annoying. Too many Lua errors will slow down your game. But if you're just having a few and want to be left alone for the duration of your play, you can use a quick macro to turn them off:
/console scriptErrors 0
To turn them back on, type:
/console scriptErrors 1
Known Working Mods in Burning Crusade Classic
This is not an exhaustive list. This is a list of core mods that you might wish to check out. These will include links to the addon site most likely to carry the most current version.
The mods listed here are confirmed working in both Pre-Patch and Burning Crusade Classic Beta. There may be minor issues with some functions, but the basic mod is doing its job. They have all been updated recently and are expected to be tweaked and improved after Burning Crusade Classic goes live.
Always read the pages carefully and make sure you are downloading the correct version for Burning Crusade Classic (Version 2.5.1).
In most cases, different versions for different expansions are found on the same page. If you are using a Mod Manager, you will automatically pull that version as long as you are in your Burning Crusade Classic folder.

Wowhead Client
Wowhead relies on reports from users like you! From downloading information about looted items to mob encounters, user-gathered information is vital to keeping Wowhead the great resource for accurate and useful WoW information. By installing the Wowhead Client and uploading information gathered on your adventures, you're helping yourself AND other players. Plus, the more you upload info, the more Reputation you build with Wowhead!
Auction Mods
TradeSkillMaster now has separate server files for both TBC and Classic Era servers.
Bag Mods
These all offer slightly different sets of features, but all offer an all-in-one type solution to your bag needs.
Bar/Interface Mods
I know this is a broad interpretation of "bar", but these are among the most popular UI modifiers.
Group/Raid Mods
One nice thing about Details! is that it includes an optional plugin called Tiny Threat. This will monitor your threat level in your group, or when soloing with a pet. This works best if everyone in your group is using Details.
Information Mods
Personally, I can't live without Altoholic.
Mail Mods
Nameplate Mods
Map Mods
GatherMate 2 is being mentioned here because it's nearly indispensible for Herbalists, Skinners, and Miners. It is working fine in Pre-Patch, but there are still problems with it in Beta. However, the addon author appears to be working on this and it should be working either at launch or shortly thereafter.
Quest Mods
While Questie is updated reasonably quickly on Curseforge, the most up to date version is linked on their Discord.
WeakAuras
There have been some recent reports about Weak Auras, particularly in a recent Wowhead news item about
malicious code hiding in some unidentified WeakAuras that ended up stealing gold away from players
. While this is rare, it is something that can happen.
The safest course is to write your own WeakAuras, but many people lack the skill or interest in learning to do so. You should be safe with any individual WeakAuras downloaded from Wago.io, since their system scans for malicious code prior to posting any WeakAuras. Heavily-downloaded and highly rated WeakAuras should also be safe from defects.
If my favorite mod isn't listed, how do I know if it's working?
It doesn't break much to test any mod, so you can always install it and see what happens. However, there are a few signs that it's likely going to work.
It's listed in the Catalog of your mod manager under Burning Crusade Classic. These are listed by mod writers who at least are putting in the effort to make the necessary modifications for TBC.
It's been updated recently -- within the past few days or weeks.
Read the comments section. If there are serious issues with a mod, this is usually where you'll find reports. If the mod writer has comments turned off, there's often a link to a Discord or Twitter account you can check out for feedback.
Add-On Managers
There are many add-on managers currently out there, but I'm only going to mention three. It would be a separate guide to review all the current options fully.
For those who want a fully-featured experience while helping addon authors get paid, Overwolf's Curseforge client is for you!
Overwolf
(
http://content.overwolf.com/prodemo/curseforge5/curseforge.html
) offers a fully-featured addon manager that also helps addon authors earn more money from their efforts. They pay addon authors based on downloads -- but don't forget to send them some donations directly as well! Download the Overwolf client, followed by the Curseforge client, to update and download all your WoW addons for any expansion. You can even Sync between multiple computers via Twitch.
If you're looking for something lighter without any subscription requirements, you can also consider
Ajour
(
https://www.getajour.com
) and
WoWUp
(
https://www.wowup.io
). Fast, light, and full of features, both areeasy to modify to your liking and even easier to find mods you want. Ajour will even interact with your Wago.io account to keep your WeakAuras updated. WoWUp even has its own addon to let you know in game what addons need updating.
Either of these three addon managers will serve your needs admirably, but feel free to explore and find your own.
