The Vol'jin Questline storyline continuation for Patch 8.1 is now available for testing in its entirety on the PTR.
BEWARE: 8.1 Story Spoilers Ahead! Don't continue reading if you don't want to be spoiled.
With the defeat of King Rastakhan in the Battle of Dazar'alor raid and Sylvanas' plans to raise Derek Proudmoore, everyone is puzzled why Vol'jin proclaimed Sylvanas Warchief on his deathbed. In
大酋长的智慧
, Baine hopes Talanji can summon the spirit of Vol'jin once more.
Previously, the inhabitants of Zuldazar saw Vol'jin after the defeat of G'huun in
赞达拉真正的领袖
, when he briefly appeared at the top of the pyramid and told Talanji she was the true leader of Zandalar.
Baine: Champion. For a brief moment after the battle with G'huun, the spirit of our old warchief, Vol'jin, appeared in view of all in Zuldazar.
I had a hundred questions to ask my old friend, but his spirit faded before I could muster my voice.
I have asked Talanji to perform her seance once more, so that I might speak with the spirit of Vol'jin.
Will you collect the Glaive of Vol'jin from its resting place at the base of the pyramid and then join us at Zanchul?
In
暗流汹涌
, we find Talanji in the Hall of the High Priests, along with Baine, Spiritwalker Ebonhorn, Rokhan, and Master Gadrin. We give her Vol'jin's glaive and she begins the ritual to summon him.
Talanji: Vol'jin's spirit is a slippery one. I have asked Master Gadrin and Spiritwalker Ebonhorn to aid us in calling him forth.
Dis ritual will not be easy, and I ask you to be on your guard should anything other than Vol'jin appear.
Talanji: Vol'jin, son of Sen'jin, once warchief of the Horde... Hear my voice and appear before us.
Vol'jin: Talanji. Ya voice be a mighty one.
Baine: Vol'jin! Is it really you, my old friend?
Vol'jin: Baine... ya heart beats strong and true... just like ya fadda. I be glad da demons didn't take ya.
Baine: Sylvanas led us to victory in the war against the Legion.
Baine: But since then... she has done much to strain the honor that binds the Horde together.
Baine: I must know... when the voice spoke to you, bidding you to name her warchief... what spirit was it?
Vol'jin: Ah, my young friend. Death be... dark. Me memory... not be what it once was.
Baine: Was it Bwonsamdi? Did he crave the death she would bring?
Vol'jin: Da memory, it be denied me by da shadows. Shadows... dat... dat be comin' for ya! Watch out!
A number of spirits then appear, interrupting Vol'jin's speech, which we must kill. After the quest is complete, Baine has some thoughts on the Horde:
Baine: The Horde cannot continue like this. We espouse nobility and honor, even as we justify vile deeds in the name of a hapless, hopeless war.
Our Horde was founded in the crucible of conflict. We banded together against common foes to protect our lands...our people. But with Sylvanas as warchief, the need to survive may not be enough to hold us together.
We must find a new path forward...before we lose everything we are.
Since Vol'jin cannot remember who encouraged him to name Sylvanas warchief, we first travel
前往破碎海滩
, the place where he was struck down by the demons.
Vol'jin: ]Da Broken Shore be where I fell in battle. We were overrun, demons everywhere. Sylvanas was doing what she could, but Thrall was down and I had fallen. It was horror. And now I need ya to take me back dere. Take me glaive to da battlefield, call to me, and I will come. Perhaps if I be in da spot where me blood was spilled, we might shine some light on dis mystery.
Baine: I remember the battle one these few stained shores. I lost many friends to the endless forces of the Burning Legion. Things were set in motion that day that would affect not only Azeroth, but every world the Legion touched.
In
他倒下的地方
Vol’jin reflects on the nature of his attack, noticing suspicious behavior.
Vol'jin: Dis be da spot, mon. Dis be where da Legion led our forces into a trap and drove a blade into me belly. Sylvanas pulled me from da ruin of da battlefield. She saved da Horde dat day. Come, let us walk around dis place and see what we can learn from da echoes of da past.
Vol'jin: Sometin' not be right dat day. Da demons, deir blades slipped past me guard.
Vol'jin: As if da loa demselves had forsaken me.
Vol'jin: Like dey be doin' now. Cannot hear dem, champion. Da voices of da loa be silent.
Vol'jin: I been callin' ta Bwonsamdi for a long time. He not be hearin' me... or he been choosin' not ta answer.
Vol'jin: Somethin' was definitely helping' our enemies dat day. But who or what could dat have been? Da loa were silent and their powers were gone, as if I'd lost their favor. With so much death, I be havin' one person in mind who might be behind it.
In
前往奥格瑞玛
, we travel to the location of Vol'jin's funeral pyre.
Vol'jin: A darkness in me mind be keeping me from remembering what happened da day I named Sylvanas warchief.
Take me glaive and travel to da pyre where I was cremated in Orgrimmar.
Master Gadrin be packin' enough juju to call me to dat place.
Go, and I be seein' ya dere.
Master Gadrin also senses dark spirits at work:
Master Gadrin: Long time I have spent speaking to da spirits and da loa. Many a lost spirit I have brought to Bwonsamdi for tending.
Yet as strong as I be, it took da strength of Talanji to find Vol'jin.
Dere be dark powers at play here. Powers dat be hidin' something from us.
In
他逝去的地方
, we walk the shadows with Vol'jin, entering into the Spirit Realm.
Vol'jin: Dis time, I need to bring ya to my side. We gonna walk da shadows between life and death, see if we can't uncover some clues. Be careful and be armed. Not everything on dis side wants us to find answers.
Vol'jin: I remember dyin'. I remember glimpsin' da Other Side.
Vol'jin: I was expectin' ta see ol' Bwonsamdi, or Shadra, or Hir'reek... any of da loa.
Vol'jin: Dere was a presence. Somethin' movin' in da shadows. Somethin' powerful.
Vol'jin: I remember it takin' me somewhere, but da memory of where be hidden from me. Ta keep me from sharin' da truth...
Vol'jin: Da truth dat it might not be da loa who wanted Sylvanas to be warchief, but somethin' far more powerful.
In
洛阿神灵的谎言
and
死亡之神
, Bwonsamdi is then summoned and confronted. He is not a fan of Sylvanas, as she denies him spirits and disrupts balance of life and death.
Vol'jin: Hidden memories, spirits attackin' us for investigating, and a long road of bodies in da wake of me makin' Sylvanas warchief. I be thinkin' it time ya speak with Ol' Bwonsamdi. Odd as it sounds, dis don't seem like his style. Dat don't mean he not be behind it. Ya best work with Talanji. From what little I been seein', da death loa got a soft spot for her highness. You can confront Bwonsamdi at his necropolis in Nazmir. Just... be respectful.
Talanji: Bwonsamdi is a dangerous loa, but even I do not believe he whispered to Vol'jin on his deathbed. To appoint Sylvanas sounds, well... he is not fond of de undead. And from what I have seen of de warchief, she is no fan of death. We must be respectful when we speak to Bwonsamdi, or dere will be consequences. Come, stay close.
Bwonsamdi: Ahhhh, ya come back. Did ya find da spirit of Vol'jin? Or ya here ta make a deal, eh?
Talanji: Loa of death, your servant Vol'jin has called to you. Yet you have turned a deaf ear to his pleas.
Bwonsamdi: What? Nonono. Ya be mistaken, Talanji.
Baine: Speak plainly! Was it you who urged Vol'jin to name Sylvanas warchief?
Bwonsamdi: Mind ya tone, bull-mon... or ya be talkin' with ya father soon enough.
Bwonsamdi: Why would me want da Banshee Queen in charge? Nononono. Sure, I be all for war and death, but dat Sylvanas... she be tippin' da scales too far.
Bwonsamdi: Balance be important! Besides, dat one got a nasty habit of keepin' what she kills. No, ya warchief be no friend to ol' Bwonsamdi.
Bwonsamdi: Ya words be troubling', though. Step forward, Speaker of da Horde. Maybe dere be a way ta find da answers ya seek.
Bwonsamdi: Now listen here, mon. Usually, ya disrespectful actions would be mighty irritatin' to Ol' Bwonsamdi. But I be lettin' dis one slide. For now. What ya be talkin' about sounds like some bad mojo. I gonna need ya to find out more from some of me... "old friends."
In
, Bwonsamdi suggests we confront the Lich King.
Bwonsamdi: I be havin' many rivals when it comes to claimin' souls. But it takes some serious mojo to do to Vol'jin what ya describe. Dat kind of power smells of old magic. Icecrown. It be more dan a pretty throne. It be an anchor dat holds dis world to da next, ya might say. I gonna open a death gate, and ya can go through and ask da Lich King if he be treadin' on Ol' Bwonsamdi's ground.
We port to the base of Icecrown Citadel with Talanji, Baine, and Vol'jin.
Talanji: Power flows through dis place. De spirits here are strong, but...imprisoned. It is different than de voices I hear at Bwonsamdi's necropolis. Here...it is...channeled.
We should hurry. I feel as though I am trespassing in a place dat looks unkindly to de living.
We fight our way up to the top of the citadel and confront the Lich King, who also is not a fan of Sylvanas. He echoes Bwonsamdi's concern that Sylvanas will disrupt balance.
Vol'jin: Lich King. Da voice I heard as I be dyin'... tellin' me to name Sylvanas warchief... was it yours?
Lich King: The Banshee Queen's schemes threaten the balance. I had no hand in them.
Vol'jin: And me spirit bein' trapped in dis world... is dat your doin'?
Lich King: Vol'jin... your soul has walked on the Other Side and returned. You have been altered... more than you know.
Lich King: You are neither undead nor damned. You do not belong here. Leave this place at once.
Talanji: I do not like de look of dis. I suggest we go... quickly!
Lich King: Leave now or stay forever. The choice is yours.
Bwonsamdi also suggests we talk to Eyir, whom Sylvanas attempted to subdue in the Stormheim questline. Eyir leads the Val'kyr, finding worthy champions for the Halls of Valor.
In the quest series
艾尔
and
面对瓦格里
, we go to Stormheim to learn why Vol'jin has new special powers.
Bwonsamdi: Not many got da stones or da mojo to take what be mine. Ol' Bwonsamdi always be gettin' his share. Da way Talanji be tellin' it, Vol'jin's spirit may be gettin' help from some other power. And dere be few who love to mess with souls like Eyir. A meddlin' one she be, with her wings and her valor. Ya best be seein' her in person. She be found in her vault at Skold-Ashil. And ya best not mention me name, or she might be sendin' ya back to me faster dan any death gate.
Talanji: Vol'jin's spirit is growing in power. I should no longer have to maintain a ritual to keep him here. Dis is fortunate, since Bwonsamdi warned me dat Eyir will likely not be pleased with my presence. Apparently she and Bwonsamdi have a past de loa was unwilling to discuss. We can proceed when you are ready.
Things are a bit strained, as Eyir dislikes Bwonsamdi and Sylvanas for different reasons. However, she talks to Vol'jin and claims she does not know how he was brought back--that sort of power is beyond her ability.
Chosen of Eyir: You stink of Bwonsamdi and his twisted magics.
Eyir: Minions of the Banshee Queen, leave this place or die.
Eyir: Hold... you DARE bring a priestess of Bwonsamdi into MY halls?
Vol'jin: Eyir, speak with me if da others not be to your liking.
Eyir: Hmm. Very well. You and your champion may approach. But know that deception will be met with destruction.
Vol'jin: Queen of da Val'kyr. My spirit was sent to da Other Side, den returned. Was dis your doing?
Eyir: Shadow hunter, you are no longer a mere spirit. What you have become is something beyond my power to forge.
Vol'jin: Who be havin' such power? Could it be da same one who bid me ta name Sylvanas warchief?
Eyir: You have been touched by the hand of valor. Such a noble force does not scheme for mortal thrones.
Vol'jin: So whoever whispered to me's not da same as who sent me back?
Eyir: You have been granted all the knowledge I am willing to share. Leave now, and never return.
Bwonsamdi: Ah...Eyir. Lots of anger and pride in dat one. She not be speakin' to me for centuries now. I thought for sure she be da one behind Vol'jin's return.
At the end of it all, nobody seems to know why Sylvanas was appointed Warchief or who returned Vol'jin to the side of the living with additional powers. In
死亡之谜
, Bwonsamdi recommends Vol'jin go to the Other Side to search for answers.
Bwonsamdi: Hmph. Well, da Lich King and dat bossy val'kyr not be me only rivals. But dey were da ones most likely ta be behind all dis. Someone be playin' with very ancient mojo. Tell Vol'jin's spirit dat da answers he be lookin' for not be found in da world of da living. He gonna need to go beyond da veil ta learn what needs knowin'. Dere be some places on dat side only he can go.
Vol'jin: So, to da Other Side den. Where I be goin' da livin' not be followin'. If it be in me power, I gonna send word of what I find. Mind yaself in da days to come. If I be readin' Baine's words right, I tink da Horde gonna have a mighty need of a hero like you soon enough.
Before leaving, Vol'jin explains what he must do next and gives Talanji a pep talk:
Vol'jin: Da Lich King didn't bring me back. Eyir be claimin' she don't got da mojo. Bwonsamdi be as confused as da rest of us. And none of dem were eager ta see Sylvanas in charge.
Talanji: No matter de circumstances, she is leader of de Horde. I will do all I can to ensure dat her rule is a just one.
Vol'jin: Zandalar still stands because of your courage, Talanji. Your father was mired in da old ways, dreamin' of a troll empire lost to time.
Vol'jin: But you be da first to look to da future... to see what da trolls can become. Ya be young, but ya be righteous. Call on me spirit if ya ever need advice from an old chieftain.
Vol'jin: For now, I gonna keep searchin' for answers. If dere be new enemies gatherin' in da shadows, den I best be huntin' dem... before dey hunt us.
Who do you think appointed Sylvanas as Warchief? If Bwonsamdi is at odds with the Lich King and Eyir, who is his "boss" referenced in the earlier 8.0 quests when he lost Vol'jin's soul? Do you think Talanji can really make a difference and hold Sylvanas to a "just" rule?
