Skinning in Deepholm.
Off the Bats, i got about a Volataire Air Skin every 2 packs of bats on average.(1-2 airs happen when it happens.)
The Dragons in Northern Deepholm, saw around 15% skin rate on them. I got aboot 1 volatile air for every 2 dragonscales.
All in all.
Very disapointing for skinning.
Yet, it still beats farming air elementals for drop rates.

I have not yet received any volatile air while looting my skinning results (even after 330 scraps and 90 savage leather), but I did notice that when opening the strange bloated stomachs that sometimes loot when you skin, they have been having 2 volatile air in them in addition to another singular mote. Perhaps this is where they volatile airs are appearing?

Ugh. Almost as big a slap in the face as the fact that the Org engineering trainer doesn't have an anvil in his shop, making you run halfway across the city to make things once you learn them. Meanwhile, I've obtained exactly one volatile air questing from 80-85, they're 50g each on the AH, and anything I can make to get a skill-up requires 4 of them.

After doing 2 circles around ulrum mining, I got 2 or so airs. Really disappointing, it's actually faster to simply far them of mobs. Yes, you won't get the benefit of overpriced ore and you are more likely to get ganked, but at least it won't be so slow.
Also, for some unknown but still ludicrous reason it won't fit in to tool box.

Has anyone else noticed that it seems to be an either/or situation whether you get Volatile Air or Volatile Earth from a node? If you have the Condenser in your bag, you only get Air from nodes, if you don't, you only get Earths. That's my experience, anyway.

A stack of Savage Leather and a stack of Blackend Dragon Scales off the dragons in Twilight Highlands and not a single Volatile Air.
That terrible of a drop rate surely can't be what they intended...?
Edit: 2 hours of questing in Vash'jir to finish up the zone yielded 3 more stacks of leather and the only Vol. Air I got was from opening up Strange Bloated Stomachs. Whatever the drop rate of Volatile Air off this item is now, it's so negligible to not even be worth the mats put into creating it. I hope they re-evaluate whatever they did to the drop rate soon.

Alright so after skinning about 200k gold worth of leather, this is what I think.
During launch period, volatile air would drop along with the leather. However not long after, Blizzard must've merged the volatiles along with the Strange Bloated Stomach. I say this because I am GUARANTEED to get at least one Volatile air every Stomach. This is either how the stomach is for everybody or the Condenser is working its magic. Just my two copper.

Just to clarify how this worked before and works now for skinners, since there's a ton of confusing comments in this thread:
Since 4.0.3a, skinning cataclysm mobs has always had a chance (1-2%) for a strange bloated stomach item to drop. This item always contains 1-2 random volatiles.
If you were a skinner and had this engineering item in your bag, you would occasionally (1-2% of the time) loot 1-2 volatile air along with the leather / scales you got from the act of skinning. Sometimes you would loot the leather, 1-2 volatile air, and a strange bloated stomach containing 1-2 random volatiles.
About 10 days ago, a hotfix was implemented which changed the behavior of this. As of now, how it works is that you no longer have a chance to receive volatile air from the act of skinning a mob, however you have a 100% chance to receive 1-2 volatile air
in addition
to the 1-2 random volatiles you receive from the strange bloated stomach item.
Therefore the amount of bonus volatile air you receive from this item is the same as it was before the hotfix, just the game servers only have to roll the proc dice once per skin (strange bloated stomach chance) instead of twice (both stomach and air proc) due to this item forcing an additional roll, resulting in slightly less lag when skinning mobs.

Let me start by saying this;
I completely agree that this should not require engineering to use. I do not like being forced to farm with a specific toon who was not intended for it.
That being said, I don't understand why the complaints on this item is so high. I know that we engineers need Volatile Air badly, but would you rather this not exist and have to farm mobs?
I wouldn't, as on my server right now a stack of Obsidium ore goes for about 150g. That translates into about 7 Volatile air if I buy the air with the money from selling the ore. I gathered 32 stacks of ore over a couple hours, and made over 4kg. That's a LOT of air when you think of it in those terms. If you got 1 air per node, with an average of 2-3 ore per node (non-rich mind you) that adds up to about 7 per stack of ore, and I know skin is going for a comparable price.
No, it is not fair to buy a ton of air and thus risk shooting ourselves in the foot by driving up the prices, but instead of thinking of this as a horrible blight on us, try to think about how much we really do get from this.
Yes, the proc could be higher. Yes it shouldn't require engineering. Yes it should fit in a toolbox.... Wait.. Why does that matter?
Oh, and for those of you that haven't noticed the true engineering perk, I think that the tinker section now being allowed to share with other item enhancements makes Lifeblood look like crap in comparison.
Anyways. I'm looking forward to my engineering being at 525 and my pile of gold when I sell all of the farmed items, not just the ore (silver lining to higher prices!) I hope you all make bank on this too.
And seriously... It needs to fit in your toolbox?

Does this reduce the chance to get other kinds of volatiles? All I seem to get are Volatile Air. I have stacks and stacks of that and will farm Twilight Highlands for hours mining and get 1 or 2 Volatile Earth.

After a mere 168 nodes I finally got a Volatile Air.. Was starting to wonder if this item was put in the game as a joke and now I know it really is! Total waste of bagspace. Had I known how crap it was I wouldn't have spent the money on training it in the first place..

This item isn't like the zapthrottle mote extractor. It doesn't go in your icon bars, it stays in your bags as a passive trait. When you mine it will give you more of a chance to get volatiles.

I'll add my 2 cents. I have 2 toons that are 85 now. One is Engineer/Miner. The other JC/Miner. I use both of them for mining for an hour at a time every week day morning before work. My engineer has Electrostatic Condenser in his bags. There is
ABSOLUTELY NO
diff in drop rate of Volatile Airs from mining between the 2 toons. In that 1 hour period either toon has gathered between 10-16 Volatile Airs.

I mine elementium daily in Uldum. Normally come out of the zone after a couple hours with 160+ lumps of elementium and 12+ lumps of pyrite. The amount of volatile fire, earth and water collected from just mining almost always exceeds the amount of volatile air - this is with a 525 miner, 525 engineer.
For example, right now, I have 144 lumps of eternium, and 10 lumps of pyrite. Along the way, mining only with the electrostatic condenser in inventory, I have these volatiles: 8 earth, 6 fire, 6 water and 1 air.
Fortunately I have a 525 alchemist who can transmute elements, because it often seems as though the little gadget that takes up room in bags is essentially worthless. Maybe I'd never get air otherwise, I don't know...

I do not normally post on the forums but I'd like to say, when I started out mining a couple of weeks ago, my miner/engineer mined for about an hour and came back with 22 air with the gadget in my inventory. I really noticed this week that after mining in the same area, for the same amount of time, I came back with 1 air. Either Blizzard should lower the amount of air that engineers use or they should make the gadget work like it is supposed to work. I know for a fact that someone that isn't an engineer mining in the same place, for the same amount of time, gets as much air as I do so this gadget doesn't help any at the moment.
Everyone needs to open a ticket and complain so Blizzard gets the message.

Well, I just mined 7 stacks of Obsidium in Hyjal and ended up with a grand total of 4 volitile air. Either I'm just horribly unlucky (which can't be discounted) or the drop rate on these is still stupidly low. Really miss the nice gas nodes we could spot and extract from like in the last 2 expansions :(

To my feeling engineering skill has something to do with the drop rate. With a low level around 460 i got no volatile air whatsovever - then i leveled up to 495 and i get now 1 or 2 volatile air every now and then. Would be interested if any1 can confirm this with a higher engineering level. Atm i cant afford to level higher prices and recipes being what they r on my server :)).

I have a goblin with herbalism and decided to power-level engineering for this bad boy since my alchy needs air for true-gold transmutes.... what a mistake. Not sure if its just my bad luck but after 283 herbs my Volatile Air yield is 2.5%..... if I didn't like the other toys i can make, I'd sooo be ticked off. I know the proc is per pick and not per herb, but still.....
Its easier and faster to get the air from the Sons over in Uldum than to hope for it off herbalizing.....
This definitely needs fixing!

Is there any reason this would affect the gathering of crystallized elements from saronite or titanium nodes? Before I built this, an hour and a half of farming those nodes would produce about 40 crystallized fire and about 40 crystallized air. Now that I've built one, I get that much in under 30 minutes at the expense of less crystallized earth and shadow. That's a significant difference, obviously. Anybody have any thoughts?

After reading the comments here I thought this would be useless, but that there was no harm having it my bag while I mined. After 2 hours mining before I bought one I got no Volatile Air, but in the 1 hour after (when I had this) I farmed myself 26 Air, more than any other volatile. I farmed both times in the same place. So for the sake of one bag slot, I think this is worth having.
I'm not sure I understand people saying this is a penalty? I mean, you don't really lose anything. It's just not useful to everybody.

I have to say the % on this is horrible....280 whiptail and NO air at all... finally 2 on my next herb, this is with 500 engi. IDK if engi skill has anything to do with it, but i seriously hope so.
I think a good idea would be to make it give the same % it does right now for a gathering skill but also give it the ability of a mote extractor. Either get low drops of your normal gathering or be able to go farm clouds or whatever iteration they would make for Cata.

As of patch 4.1, this have been removed from the game. Trainer will show that you trained for it, but new engineers can no longer train for it. And it has been removed from your spell book ..

I spent about 1.5 hours mining in twilight higlands yesterday. With this in my bags, I picked up 26 volatile airs and 250 elementium ore. So that's about 2 airs per stack of ore.

Even my alt who has tailoring mines to make gold. it'so easy! As for the electrostatic condenser, it works just great I've been getting 2 volatile air every few nodes. Longest I went was 10 nodes before getting air, but it's usually no more than 4-5.

Is there a level requirement for the Volatile Air "proc" to occur?
I'm flying around picking flowers in Mount Hyjal on my level 71 Tauren Druid right now, and have gone from an Herbalism skill of 425 to 448 (23 'gathers') without seeing a single Volatile Air. I do have the Condenser in my bags with me, right next to my Hearthstone and Gnomish Army Knife. ;)
The experience is delicious regardless (4,400xp per flower), but it would be nice if my Condenser, well...worked?

Not sure what all the fuss is about. This item isn't meant to replace farming for Volatile Air, it simply supplements something that you would be doing anyway. With that in mind I find it to be very useful. Here is the total from my mining run, which doesn't take all that long to do in the Twilight Highlands. I stop at 200 elementium ore.
200 Elementium Ore
24 Pyrite Ore
31 Volatile Air
22 Volatile Fire
8 Volatile Earth
9 Volatile Water
Say I average 3 ore per node (both Elementium and Pyrite), that's ~75 nodes mined
Usually I get 1 or 2 Air in a node, let's call it 1.5, so ~21 drops in the nodes I mined
= 21/75 = 30%
Sure, if you need to farm large amount of air this isn't particularly going to help you. It isn't supposed to...like I say, supplemental. However if you are simply gathering ore (I can't comment for herbs etc) because you need ore, this is a great little extra that will give you enough air for the next few days of Truegold etc.
Perhaps it has a higher percentage with mining. If the chance is as low as 3% as I have seen people say, then don't bother getting angry at it. Just go farm your herbs etc with this in your bag and gives you a few extra g's if you want to sell them. If you're herbing or whatever with solely farming air in mind, you're going about it in the wrong way.
Update: Another mining run today produced:
200 Elementium Ore
28 Pyrite Ore
29 Volatile Air
17 Volatile Fire
13 Volatile Water
9 Volatile Earth
4 Alicite
1 Ember Topaz
~25% chance of Air that time.
Current prices on my realm puts that at 1632g in 50 minutes of mining. Let's call it 1958g per hour mining. 30% of that amount comes from Volatile Air, so this device is essentially worth
~587.5g
per hour while mining to me.

I'll tell you what I was thinking long before the release of Cata when i made my hunter both an engineer and a blacksmith, I was thinking what a great bonus to my dps by having the benefits of both professions and since i have an alt that has mining I can use it to supply my hunter with all the ore I will need to level both professions in Cata. Little did I know the amount of volatile air I would need to level engineering nor what the price would be!

So far, I'll have to give this item a big thumbs down :( Rogue with Engineering & skinning... I made one of these before I could even skin cata hides. Once I hit clvl 78, I started skinning in Mt Hyjal, now at clvl 82 I've been skinning almost exclusively in Vashj'ir since 80 for the deepsea scales.
All of the skins go to my LW, and so far, I have 48 deepsea scales, 248 savage leather (after turning all the scraps into leather), 4 pristine hides, and 0 volatile air :(
So unless this thing is increasing the drop rate of the Strange bloated stomach, which doesn't necessarily mean I'll get Volatile Air, It seems to be a big time waste

Now, I have gotten 8 Strange Bloated Stomach and all 8 did drop at least 1 Volatile Air, but that's way lower than the reported average 3% drop rate from skinning for me.
So perhaps it just increases the chance of finding Volatile Air in the stomachs if you're a skinner?
After continuing to gather information, it is very apparent that it gives a greatly improved chance (probably a 99% chance) of finding Volatile Air within the Bloated Stomach
Now matter how you slice it (pun intended), I'm very dissapointed.
No longer dissapointed in the Electrostatic Condenser, just dissapointed in my drop rate for Strange Bloated Stomach :(

I've since gone up to lvl 85, and have looted 14 more Strange Bloated Stomach, and so far I have a 100% drop rate of at least one Volatile air from the stomach's. Sometimes I'll get one air and one or two of something else, and sometimes I'll get 2 or three air. But I'm still getting way less than the reported 3% drop-rate for the stomach's, it's closer to 1% for me since reaching lvl 78.

Can't see why Blizzard won't apply the condenser attributes to engineers who don't skin, herb or mine. I'm an engineer and jewelcrafter. Need 10 volatile airs daily for my alchemist, as part of a transmute recipe for truegold. Built the electrostatic condenser and went to Orsis in Uldum to slay a few Scions of Al'Akir. Was curious to see what the volatile air drop rate would be for a non-gathering engineer. Here's the results:
Time spent: one hour
Scions of Al'Akir killed: 101
Volatile airs dropped: 19
Gold made from vendor: 44g 25s 61c (after 1g 83s 3c for repairs)
Incidental drops: 3 greens that yielded 3 hypnotic dusts and 2 lesser celestial essences.
BTW, the 19 volatile airs would have cost me over 320 gold at the AH on the Skywall realm.

I made a condenser when I first leveled Eng to 525 Oct. 2011. As this toon is also a miner I thought it would be a welcome addition. For the first two months it kept me swimming in V. Airs, for the next two I kept my head above water. Now, and for the past month, I'm lucky to get 1 V. Air while mining 10 stacks of elementium. Thanks Bliz for a little help; sorry you wouldn't let it last. What I can't say is whether they've all been nerfed, or whether they're just on a CD; it's effectiveness cools as it ages. Perhaps if I make a new one . . .

If you're looking for volatile air just solo the trash in Vortex Pinnacle up to the first boss (no need to kill it) jump off and reset, you get like 35-40 a trip.
