How to Play Brewmaster Monk
Brewmaster Monk is a specialization whose rotation mostly revolves around the
醉拳
passive in some way. You will be using abilities that grant the
酒醒入定
buff to increase
醉拳
's power, such as
幻灭踢
, before making use of
活血酒
to then reduce the damage delayed by it. All the while, you will spend Energy on abilities such as
醉酿投
and
猛虎掌
to reduce the cooldown of
活血酒
and be able to lower your damage taken even more.
Press Blackout Kick on Cooldown -
幻灭踢
is a major ability in a Brewmaster's rotation, featuring a 4-second cooldown that is completely unaffected by Haste. No matter how much or how little Haste you have, its cooldown will
always
be this long, and your global cooldown will only be 1 second. This means that you will only have to plan your next three abilities at a time before needing to press Blackout Kick again. No matter how complicated things may seem in the priorities further below,
stick to this main idea
. It will be the key to your success!
Spend Energy Wisely -
although Energy is a Brewmaster's primary resource, there are only three rotational abilities that actually cost any to use:

, and

. You always want to have enough Energy to cast Keg Smash when it is available, and will want to use other abilities that have no cost before filling in any remaining gaps with Tiger Palm or Spinning Crane Kick.
Manage Your Stagger -
a Brewmaster will almost always be suffering some amount of damage from their
醉拳
passive, turning a portion of every attack into a DoT effect. However, this doesn't actually reduce your total damage taken unless you do something to reduce the size of this DoT. Take advantage of the multiple abilities that help to minimize your Stagger damage, such as

.
Best Brewmaster Monk Opener
When first beginning a pull, your goal is to establish a healthy amount of
酒醒入定
with
醉酿投
and
幻灭踢
. Due to the low cooldown of
幻灭踢
, you will not be pressing multiple offensive cooldowns back-to-back, instead spacing them out at moments between casts where everything else has been placed on cooldown. If you have talented into

Opener Tips
Due to the lengthy cooldown of

, you may not want to make use of it in an opener against a small pack if you know a very large pull is coming soon after. This will substantially reduce your ability order and result in proceeding to the priority list even sooner. Plan accordingly!
Although

is to be used on cooldown, it is best saved for after enemies are fully grouped up and does not have a static spot in the opener.
Trinkets and other on-use effects can be used at any point that is convenient. Your damage amplifiers, such as

Stagger: a Primer
Brewmaster Monks rely heavily upon their
醉拳
passive to mitigate the damage they receive. However, there is a surprising amount of depth to this mechanic. Although you do not need to know every detail about how it works to succeed as a tank, it is helpful to at least understand a basic explanation. If nothing else, you may use this information to help explain to others how to better handle your damage intake!
Explanation of Stagger
On top of being able to frequently dodge enemy attacks with
精通:醉拳大师
, Brewmaster Monks are the only specialization featuring the additional mechanic of
醉拳
to further mitigate damage. With this passive effect, all damage you receive will be split into two portions:
An
instant
portion - immediately damaging you like any attack normally does.
A
醉拳
ed
portion - dealing damage to you every 0.5 seconds, for a total of 10 seconds. With the
闪避身法
talent, this is extended to 13 seconds instead.
The amount of
Physical
damage you can delay taking with
醉拳
is mostly based upon how much Agility you have. From there, only 58% of that value will apply to any magical damage (including most damage-over-time debuffs). While you are
醉拳
ing damage, you will also receive one of three debuffs based upon how much damage you are taking compared to your maximum health:
轻度醉拳
(Green) - Your total amount of
醉拳
ed damage is equal to 1-29% of your maximum health.
中度醉拳
(Yellow) - Your total amount of
醉拳
ed damage is equal to 30-59% of your maximum health.
重度醉拳
(Red) - Your total amount of
醉拳
ed damage is equal to 60% or more of your maximum health.
Note that although there are only these three debuffs, you may regularly reach periods of
醉拳
ing 100% or more of your health in harder content! As such, you do not always need to be worried about reaching
重度醉拳
, so long as you are receiving a steady amount of healing to offset the damage.
Of course, simply taking the same amount of damage over a longer period of time does not mean you've actually mitigated or reduced the amount taken. This is where your other main mitigation ability of
活血酒
comes in. This ability has a 20-second recharge time and two charges. When used, you will instantly
Purify
50% of the total amount of damage you are currently
醉拳
ing. An example of how this all works out is like so:
You have a
醉拳
amount of 50% against Physical damage.
You are hit for 25,000 damage by an enemy. Thanks to
醉拳
, this damage is split.
You instantly take 12,500 damage.
The other 12,500 damage enters your
醉拳
pool.
You are now taking 625 damage every 0.5 seconds from
醉拳
, gradually depleting your
醉拳
pool. After 10 seconds, you will have taken another 12,500 total damage.
With the
闪避身法
talent extending the duration of
醉拳
to 13 seconds, this would instead be ~481 damage every 0.5 seconds!
After 5 seconds, you cast
活血酒
, which removes 50% of your current
醉拳
pool. At this point, you still had 6,250 damage left to take, so 3,125 damage is now
Purified
.
After 10 total seconds have passed, you suffered 12,500 instant damage, and only 9,375 in
醉拳
damage. By using
活血酒
, you have taken 3,125 less damage from that original hit of 25,000!
If you had used
活血酒
a little faster, such as after only 1 second, you would've taken 5,625 less damage instead.
Purifying earlier will prevent more damage
!

This additional section is by no means required knowledge for finding success as a Brewmaster Monk. However, for those that are curious, here is the exact formula used to determine your
Physical
醉拳
percentage--remember, your Magic
醉拳
percentage is only 58% of the Physical value--at any given moment:
(Base/(Base+K)) * 100 = Physical Stagger Percentage
Here, Base is represented as a value calculated from a combination of your Agility and other modifiers.
It is not the percentage displayed on your character sheet.
Instead, your Base is calculated using the following equation:
Base = 1.13 * <Agility> * <modifiers>
Modifiers
<modifiers> are the talents and abilities of a Brewmaster that you might be familiar with already, and include:

: 1.1 for rank 1, 1.20 for rank 2

You may notice these numbers are substantially different from what their tooltips state, such as
酒醒入定
's claim of "100% more effectiveness" on your total
醉拳
. However, in practice, these values approximately end up resulting in that amount of increase to Stagger's power, and are a lot easier to explain to a player!
Once you have determined your active <modifiers>, each of their values are multiplied together with 113% of your current Agility value to get your Base value.
K-Values
The final piece of information needed to calculate your
醉拳
percentage is the K-value of the content you are playing. This value, also known as the "Armor Constant Mod", is a number set by Blizzard in every piece of instanced content and open-world zone, and is used to keep your defensive powers as a tank at roughly the same level across all types of content. Essentially, a Mythic-geared Brewmaster's Stagger percentage will not be that much higher than a Normal-geared Brewmaster's in a Normal raid instance because of these K-values.
Listing every K-value available is well beyond the scope of this discussion, but here are the values from The War Within Season 1 content to help demonstrate:
LFR Nerub-ar Palace: 100,000
Normal Nerub-ar Palace: 106,600
Heroic Nerub-ar Palace: 113,900
Mythic Nerub-ar Palace: 122,300
Mythic+: 104,500
These numbers are all much higher than your Base value from earlier, which means that you will never be able to get close to 100%

, no matter how much gear you gain in a season.
Example Calculations
Now that all the numbers necessary to calculate
醉拳
are known, let's do a quick sample of two Brewmasters under slightly different scenarios:

Stagger Improvements
Outside of the basic gameplay loop from taking
醉拳
damage and handling parts of it with
活血酒
, many of your abilities and talents as a Brewmaster Monk can further enhance its effects. The most important of these improvements comes from the
酒醒入定
passive. This effect will dramatically increase the amount of damage that reaches your
醉拳
pool, both reducing your instant damage taken and increasing the power of your
活血酒
. Its buff is given to you in chunks of 5 seconds and 3 seconds whenever you cast
醉酿投
or
幻灭踢
, along with up to 4 seconds given with each cast of
神鹤引项踢
.
酒醒入定
's buff can be extended up to 15 seconds total, but be warned that dropping it at any point can be catastrophic to your damage intake, as damage you have already started
醉拳
ing will still be there if it expires. If you suddenly are taking more instant damage on top of a large portion of
醉拳
ed damage...you can probably guess what will come next.
However,
酒醒入定
is not the only talent that rewards you for using your other abilities and playing with
醉拳
. There are also many that can reduce your
醉拳
pool or offset its damage, such as

. Beyond these, you also have a few talents that will provide you with buffs based on which

debuff color you currently have, namely

Finally, your remaining key tool to use with
醉拳

. This ability generates a damage absorbing shield for 8 seconds at a time. While it is normally on the small size, it can potentially be tripled. By making use of
活血酒
, you will gain stacks of the
净化真气
buff, with one stack given for using it with
轻度醉拳
, two for
中度醉拳
, and three for
重度醉拳
. Each stack will give an additional 20% to the size of your next

's absorb, making it a powerful defensive tool.
Managing Brews
As a Brewmaster Monk, your goal as a tank will be to maintain 100% uptime on your
酒醒入定
passive, while then finding the best times to make use of
活血酒
and
天神酒
. While their base cooldowns are long, they, along with any other ability with "Brew" in the name, will gain cooldown reduction. Your
醉酿投
and
猛虎掌
will provide 3 seconds and 1 second of reduction, respectively, with every cast. This results in effectively halving the base cooldowns of your Brews.
Once you have begun using your abilities and built up
酒醒入定
, it is time to start thinking about when to use
活血酒
. To keep things simple, here are three basic rules you can follow:
Avoid having both charges of
活血酒
sitting off cooldown. You are wasting cooldown reduction if you do!
Make use of a charge right after taking a big spike of damage. This maximizes the amount of damage
Purified
from your
醉拳
pool.
Use a charge if the second one is about to come off cooldown, or if your
净化真气
buff is about to expire.
For the most part, if you are following these rules you will likely be acting as if
活血酒
only has one charge available at any given time. With how frequently your charges of it regenerate, this is fine, and has the benefit of giving you an extra cushion against multiple large hits in a row. It may also mean, however, that you will need to occasionally use
活血酒
while only having
中度醉拳
or even
轻度醉拳
. So long as you still have that extra charge for when damage spikes occur, that's what will matter most.
Due to your frequent use of
活血酒
, you will naturally build up multiple stacks of
净化真气
between each use of
天神酒
. With this in mind, your goal for these absorbs should generally be to create more of them than to create "stronger" ones. This way, you will limit the amount of wasted cooldown reduction and
净化真气
stacks. Of course, if you are aware of a dangerous mechanic coming up in the immediate future, there is nothing wrong with holding on to an available
天神酒
for a few seconds either.

When to Use Shado-Pan or Master of Harmony Talents
Although they are a defining aspect of many specializations, Brewmaster Monk's Hero Talent trees of Shado-Pan and Master of Harmony are ultimately small in how they impact your general gameplay. There are, nevertheless, pros and cons to identify in each, giving moments for you to switch between the two to match the challenges you're encountering.

Master of Harmony
A Master of Harmony player may have the extra "burden" of needing to press
天神酒
to start spending the vitality stored by
和谐化身
, but these Hero Talents remain similarly passive in their effect on your rotation as a Brewmaster. Instead, this tree's potential will be partially determined by your ability to self-heal. As a result, you may still find yourself using
活力苏醒
to further improve your vitality generation. Similarly, when in areas where you are taking more damage, your healing from
玄牛之赐
will naturally increase and provide additional vitality to spend.
However, there is a key pitfall to note in the
和谐化身
passive:
you cannot build additional vitality while in the process of spending it after each cast of
天神酒
. This means that, paradoxically, you will want to avoid applying the bonus damage effect while damage cooldowns such as
精序兵戈
are active. If you must use it for defensive reasons, it should ideally be done before enemies have reached four stacks of the debuff. This way, you can still benefit from the additional damage bonus of the
大道同归
capstone. Beyond this behavior, Master of Harmony also features the
平衡方略
passive, which can be used to increase the damage of a given ability by up to 15%. For
爆炸酒桶
in particular, it may prove useful to ensure you do not cast any Fire or Nature abilities (such as
火焰之息
) directly leading up to its use.
To summarize, a Master of Harmony Brewmaster does have a few additional mechanics to consider if they want to fully optimize the otherwise passive talents. Although its raw damage potential will generally be lower than Shado-Pan, the on-demand output can prove appealing in content where enemies briefly take increased damage. Otherwise, its defensive power can prove to be unmatchable in sufficiently dangerous areas.
When to Use
灼焰炙气
or
龙焰酒
With
灼焰炙气
, your
幻灭踢
s in particular become especially powerful for a short time after casting
火焰之息
. Thanks to the
萨萨拉比姆的力量
talent (recommended in all Brewmaster builds), this short time will actually be at all times instead, resulting in
灼焰炙气
being a noteworthy buff to your damage in smaller pulls. While it may also apply its damage buff to your
神鹤引项踢
, you often will not have space in the rotation to be casting it repeatedly, especially if you have also talented into
幻灭连击
. Likewise, your performance with this talent will suffer if you do not reliably press
幻灭踢
on cooldown. All the same, it is a strong default talent depending on skill level.
龙焰酒
acts as an even more passive alternative, increasing your
火焰之息
damage based on your
醉拳
level and breathing two additional times. Due to
火焰之息
's more generous AoE scaling, this talent offers more
potential
damage in larger pulls, though it will also be dependent on how often you are reaching
重度醉拳
to maximize its bonus damage. Notably, this talent further interacts with
幻灭连击
.
Overall, the choice between these two talents becomes somewhat of a matter of preference. While
灼焰炙气
offers better performance in most target counts,
龙焰酒
can keep up in larger pulls where you may even include
幻灭连击
ing
火焰之息
with
重度醉拳
.
Addendum:

and

If
滚烫烧酒
is talented into rather than
萨萨拉比姆的力量
, then you are no longer able to maintain
火焰之息
's DoT effect by itself due to the debuff lasting for a few seconds less than the ability's cooldown. Fortunately,

is also able to refresh this debuff's duration every time you cast
幻灭踢
or
神鹤引项踢
while empowered by its effect after casting
火焰之息
, which also means you will always benefit from
滚烫烧酒
's bonus damage.
However, because of this interaction you

Although choosing between this set of talents frequently has an easy answer, it nonetheless also makes for an important decision in how simple or complex you want your rotation to be as a Brewmaster.

, often considered a "default" choice across many talent builds, completely resets the cooldown of
火焰之息
every time you cast
醉酿投
. This means that you can effectively treat
火焰之息
as if it doesn't have a cooldown
, so long as it gets used once between each
醉酿投
. In addition, these resets mean that you will be able to maintain its damage-reduction debuff on enemies with ease, while also filling gaps in the rotation that you would otherwise have to wait or potentially (over)use
猛虎掌
/
神鹤引项踢
.
滚烫烧酒
, by comparison, attempts to be the "simple" alternative for Brewmasters, offering a noteworthy damage buff to
醉酿投
when cast on enemies suffering from
火焰之息
's DoT. Due to the availability of other talents such as
天神烈焰
and
灼焰炙气
, you can theoretically maintain a similarly permanent uptime on this DoT despite its duration being shorter than
火焰之息
's cooldown, which also means permanent uptime on
滚烫烧酒
's damage buff! However, the additional gaps in the rotation created by having one less "free" ability to cast in between each cooldown of
醉酿投
often results in players spending too much Energy and suffering a net
loss
of damage.
In general, these two talents have an easy answer to offer: use
萨萨拉比姆的力量
for a smoother rotation and overall damage output that is equal to
滚烫烧酒
for most players. With this in mind, due to the

and working to fill rotational gaps in a similar way, you may consider switching into

for a
noticeable
damage gain. So long as you also make use of

instead, there will be minimal impact to your overall playstyle.
When to Use
碧玉疾风
or

碧玉疾风
functions as both a passive source of AoE threat and a useful ability to fill gaps in your rotation that would otherwise be present. Without it, you will more frequently experience moments of not pressing any abilities during a pull. This can cause you to instead waste Energy casting more
猛虎掌
s or
神鹤引项踢
s than necessary. That being said, its short cooldown and duration are both reduced by Haste, making it difficult to maintain at times and especially during
嗜血
. If you are frequently dropping this buff or are having to kite away from enemies, its value will drop substantially.
If you are looking for a less hectic experience,

may be just what you need. Rather than maintaining a small damage buff, you will instead passively deal additional damage simply by using your mitigation kit.

,

, and even
玄牛酒
will trigger this effect, while also applying a hefty 50% snare when hitting enemies. Although it does have a 3-second travel delay, it will rarely miss what you are fighting. However, it can backfire at times, hitting an enemy that was recently crowd-controlled and freeing them. When you are in a scenario where you're frequently having to kite, this talent becomes especially noteworthy.
Ultimately, your decision between
碧玉疾风
and
特别快递
will be one based on the type of content you're in. For easier content that involves rapidly moving between groups of enemies,
碧玉疾风
's ability to tag them and establish early threat can prove valuable. However, if damage is what you are after, then
特别快递
maintains an offensive edge regardless of target count. This does come at the expense of having global cooldowns where you do
nothing
; don't fill the time with too many extra
猛虎掌

While it may be a passive talent,

represents a large shift in your rotation as a Brewmaster Monk. This is due to its removal of your main "filler" ability of

s upon reaching 10 stacks of its buff. Used wisely, this can result in every third
旭日东升踢
casting twice and dealing massive amounts of damage. At its most basic, this is all there is to know about

However, where this talent really demonstrates its unique power is in its ability to inherit the effects of others that interact with
猛虎掌
or
精序兵戈
. This includes all of the following effects:
迎面铁掌
- 50% chance to deal 50% additional damage and receive extra Brew cooldown reduction
反击
- Gain 100% increased damage to your next
神鹤引项踢
or 50% to your next bonus
顺水推舟
cast after dodging an attack.
幻灭连击
- Casting

's buff on a bonus cast of

at 10 stacks of its buff. Due to how often some of them are normally triggered, their effects are reduced with this talent, but it remains a very novel way to play your Brewmaster. Despite this, however, it should be noted that
顺水推舟
is
not
able to match the power of
精序兵戈
under any circumstances. Even if you are able to reliably press
旭日东升踢
as soon as you have reached 10 stacks of its buff and increase your auto attack speed with Haste effects such as
能量灌注
, it will still be an overall loss of damage and defense. Regardless, you may wish to take this talent if you are new to playing Brewmaster and want to have a somewhat easier experience.
Finally, there is an additional negative consequence to losing
猛虎掌
in your rotation with
顺水推舟
. By not having access to it as a filler ability, you will instead need to make use of
神鹤引项踢
, even in single-target. This is not a problem by itself, but
神鹤引项踢
is also a channeled ability; you do not perform auto attacks while spinning! As a result, you risk building stacks of
顺水推舟
's buff more slowly, and especially so if spinning multiple times in a row. Make sure you do not repeatedly cast
神鹤引项踢
unless you are fighting many enemies!
幻灭连击
Due to adding effects to many of your core rotational abilities,
幻灭连击
is a talent that is important to play around effectively. This begins with continuing to prioritize the use of
幻灭踢
on cooldown, so you may empower as many abilities as possible. However, this results in the talent being a difficult option to play optimally for many, and it is not recommended for those seeking an easier Brewmaster experience.
If you are willing to take on the challenge of using
幻灭连击
, the choice of what ability to empower is usually a simple one. In most circumstances, you will all but exclusively consume the buffs provided by your
幻灭踢
s on
猛虎掌
to give it bonus damage. This is particularly useful due to
猛虎掌
already having a number of additional damage modifiers in talents, such as
反击
and
迎面铁掌
, enabling it to greatly exceed its regular potential. Beyond this, you may even have times where choosing to combo
醉酿投
for its extra cooldown reduction,
火焰之息
for its extra defense/damage, or
天神酒
for bonus
净化真气
stacks is the correct play, though this should be
rarely
happening. If your combos are regularly being consumed by
活血酒
--a very easy mistake to make given that
活血酒
is not on the global cooldown--this talent will lose
most
of its value.
The biggest key to you empowering the abilities you want with
幻灭连击
is to take advantage of abilities that do
not
have a combo effect. If they are used, you will keep your
幻灭连击
buff and may still use it on another ability later. In particular, your
神鹤引项踢
,
碧玉疾风
,
真气爆裂
, and
旭日东升踢
(if you aren't talented into
顺水推舟
) can be used this way, alongside all of your offensive cooldowns. By making good use of these "gap-filling" abilities, you can still reliably consume every
幻灭踢
's buff with
猛虎掌
. Don't forget about it!
玄牛之赐
Your
玄牛之赐
passive is one that has a very misleading effect. While it may claim to only have a chance to summon its healing spheres, this ability is instead entirely predictable. This is because it follows a consistent rule: you will generate one healing sphere every time you have taken 100% of your maximum health as damage. While this may seem like a daunting amount of damage, it is actually calculated from the "raw" damage values hitting you, before they are reduced by mitigation or your own
醉拳
passive.
Once they have appeared, your
玄牛之赐
spheres will linger on the battlefield for up to 30 seconds before automatically being consumed. However, you may only have up to 5 orbs active at a time, and notably, any healing spheres spawned from the
玄牛之魂
talent also behave this way. If any further spawns occur beyond this point, the oldest of your orbs will be automatically consumed and heal you to stay at this cap.
If the thought of having to look for your
玄牛之赐
orbs when you want extra healing is daunting, there is fortunately a reliable alternative in the form of the
移花接木
spell. This ability, which costs 15 Energy and has a 5-second cooldown, will heal you for a small baseline amount in addition to consuming all active healing spheres. It will even deal damage equal to 10% of the total amount of healing done (including overhealing) to your active target afterward. Notably, when consuming
玄牛之赐
orbs this way, they will also have their healing buffed by the
灵魂之力
talent.
Overall,
玄牛之赐
(and
玄牛之魂
) represent your biggest form of self-healing. Thanks to
移花接木
and the
灵魂之力
talent, it is not uncommon to fully heal yourself off of only one or two orbs at lower health. You should still try to be mindful of how many are present at once and judge whether or not you need to consume them all, however. Likewise, due to
神鹤引项踢
passively dragging any active healing spheres toward your location, you may inadvertently consume some. Keep track of this total by watching the number on your
移花接木
ability.
轮回之触
轮回之触
is one of the more unique forms of "execute" ability, but its restrictions on when it can be used make it a very volatile one. Under normal circumstances, this ability can only be used against enemies whose current health is lower than your own maximum health. Because of this, you can take advantage of maximum health buffs, such as your
壮胆酒
or a Priest's
真言术:韧
, to greatly increase the threshold where it can be activated. Even so, when facing a raid boss losing potentially millions of health per second, it can be very difficult to activate
轮回之触
at all.
If you prefer a more reliable, but weaker alternative, you may wish to talent
强化轮回之触
. With this talent,
轮回之触
may instead be activated once any enemy has fallen below 15% of their maximum health, dealing 35% of your maximum health as damage. As an added bonus, you may still deal the "full" amount of
轮回之触
damage by waiting for your foe to reach the "normal" activation threshold of your own maximum health. Note that if you ever engage in PvP combat, you
must
take this talent in order to use
轮回之触
at all.
Things get a little more complicated when
致命之触
's damage bonus after casting
轮回之触
gets involved. If you are using this ability on a single-target raid boss, for example, then you are entirely missing out on 30 seconds of additional damage dealt. Instead, you could talent
强化轮回之触
and immediately use the ability at 15% health to instead gain the full duration of bonus damage. However, this is
still
unlikely to result in more total damage than casting full-strength Touch of Death. Realistically, this decision depends on what you might consider "useful" damage dealt.
To summarize,
轮回之触
is an ability whose damage can easily jump by hundreds of thousands at a time, all based on your own reaction time and talent choices. If you are willing to engage in this "sniping" behavior, it can be a massive source of damage over a long period of time such as a Mythic+ dungeon. Alternatively, you may opt for
强化轮回之触
to bypass this extra minigame of your Brewmaster rotation entirely; the choice is yours.

By far my favourite guide on here for one reason. The strange paragraph that makes me laugh out loud every time.
Think about Brewmaster like a bowl of cereal: The rotation is the cereal, Brew Charges are the milk, and Energy is the bowl. The bowl’s important, you couldn’t have a bowl of cereal without it, but the stuff most people care about is the cereal. Some people might prefer the milk, but if you find someone whose favorite part of cereal is the bowl, that’s an alien (poorly) impersonating a human. Run. Away.

I would just like to add that if spinning crane kick is channeled in its entirety such that the swing timer does not reset while channeling, then auto attack is not suspended at all, and there is no single target DPS lost. This makes spinning crane kick a much better offensive energy spender than tiger palm, even in single target situations. At the loss of 1 sec brew CDR of course.
