Battle for Azeroth is an action-packed WoW expansion, escalating the faction conflict between the Alliance and the Horde. In this guide, we'll outline the major plot points of the Battle for Azeroth expansion so you can keep track of all the plot twists, betrayals, battles, and deaths!

Major spoilers in this post!
Legion Epilogue
The events at the end of Antorus, the Burning Throne, set the stage for Battle for Azeroth. At the end of the Argus the Unmaker fight, the Pantheon imprisons Sargeras, but not before Sargeras impales Azeroth. The impact from this attack destroys Silithus, leaving his weapon sticking out of the ground, visible for miles on end. Azeroth had premonitions of this event, which the player witnessed in the
Azeroth's Nightmares
scenario.
The attack also caused Azerite, the blood of Azeroth, to spill forth. This is an incredibly powerful substance that can also lead to destruction in the wrong hands. With the threat of the Legion removed, and our Artifact weapons sacrificed to nullify Sargeras' corruption, the Horde moves to collect Azerite to increase their power, while the Alliance follows suit to prevent the Horde from gaining an upper hand.
Battle for Azeroth Comics
Leading up to Battle for Azeroth, Blizzard has published a series of three comics.
"Reunion" - Jaina Proudmoore
- In this comic we learn about the wounded pride of Kul Tiras, the relationship between Jaina and her mother, Jaina's doubts on her past decisions, and the political role Lady Ashvane plays in Boralus.
"The Speaker" - Magni Bronzebeard
- In this comic, we learn more about Magni's family. In between pondering how to help Azeroth, we see flashbacks of Magni interacting with his wife and teaching a young Moira how to fight. The challenges Magni faces in communicating with Azeroth parallel the difficulties he faces with Moira, who seized the opportunity to make a new life for herself with the Dark Iron Dwarves after feeling devalued by her father.
"Three Sisters - Windrunner Family
- In this comic, the three sisters meet to cleanse Windrunner Spire. The meeting at first appears to go fairly well, but then the fault lines between the sisters grow deeper as they argue about Vereesa's choice not to follow through poisoning Garrosh and joining Sylvanas in the Undercity. We also get a glimpse of the Void voices in Alleria's head and it's pretty rough--they are constantly taunting her, demanding she kill everyone from Turalyon to Sylvanas.
The sisters play a game where they must share two truths and a lie, revealing the lie at the end. Sylvanas' three statements are that she misses being alive, she is proud to be the Warchief, and she will never betray her sisters. However, she will not share what statement is a lie. Based on the last page of the comic, it appears that she planned on having her Dark Rangers attack her sisters, deciding at the very end not to follow through due to Vereesa tearfully apologizing for abandoning Sylvanas at the end of
War Crimes
.
Before the Storm
Before the Storm
takes place after the Legion epilogue and before the Burning of Teldrassil. In this novel we learn more about how the old wounds between the Alliance and Horde reopened.
The full novel is available on June 12, 2018 and you can buy it
here
.
We collaborated with Nobbel87 on a video explaining the synopsis of the book and where to find in-game references. You can read the article

.
Anduin tries to look for peace with the looming threat of Azerite as a volatile substance. He tries to work with the Forsaken, and so Sylvanas and Anduin set up a meeting between the human and Forsaken relatives, which is going pretty well after initial trepidation. However Calia Menethil, attending without Anduin's knowledge, throws off her disguise and attracts the wrath of Sylvanas. The meeting then turns into a slaughter. Sylvanas believes a betrayal is occurring, killing all members of the Desolate Council still on the field, including those retreating. Some members of the Desolate Council tried to follow Calia to shelter, but Sylvanas killed Calia as well. Anduin with the help of Alonsius Faol is able to resurrect Calia, but she decides to come back as Forsaken, not as a human--fitting as she's haunted by the actions of her brother, Arthas, and lost her family to the plague.
This then sets up the events of the
Burning of Teldrassil
and
Battle for Lordaeron
. In the epilogue, Genn and Anduin reflect on the battle and we see some character development from Genn--he now realizes that the Forsaken are not all monsters.

The Burning of Teldrassil
The Burning of Teldrassil, otherwise known as the War of the Thorns, is a special BFA pre-patch event. The major plot points are:
Sylvanas attacks the Night Elf lands with an element of surprise. The Elven fleet is heading towards Silithus, so the Night Elves are relatively defenseless.
Sylvanas' initial goal is not to destroy Teldrassil--it is to occupy the city, breaking the will of the Night Elves by killing Malfurion Stormrage.
In the short story
Elegy
, Captain Delaryn learns about the Horde's surprise plan from a dying Forsaken rogue. Later in-game, the player aids Captain Delaryn and Malfurion Stormage in attempting to stop the attack.
Sylvanas believes the Night Elven lands to be a threat to the Horde--their ports allow the Alliance to easily move Azerite to the Eastern Kingdoms.
Darkshore is a land filled with Azerite and both sides are trying to use the Azerite to their advantage. The Horde uses the Azerite to fuel their war-machines, which in turn sets off fires across Darkshore. This in turn causes Malfurion's protective wall of wisps to fall, as the wisps grow confused by the chaos in the forest and disperse.
Malfurion later confronts Saurfang in a last-ditch effort, but the fight is halted by Sylvanas. Saurfang then attacks Malfurion "dishonorably," leaving the druid grievously wounded. Saurfang later helps Tyrande escape with Malfurion, knowing that Darnassus will fall.
We do not yet know the exact moment or reason for Teldrassil burning. We know that Mia Greymane was trying to help the Night Elves evacuate Teldrassil. We do know that Sylvanas views the mission as a failure, as it was intended to wipe out a significant Alliance base and their leadership, and Malfurion and Tyrande survive.
In the aftermath of the Burning of Teldrassil, the in-game world has changed. Teldrassil is not accessible and Darkshore is covered in ash with the burning tree in the background. Talking to Zidormi restores the land to its previous state.

The Battle for Lordaeron
The Battle for Lordaeron follows the Burning of Teldrassil. It is the Alliance's counter-attack on the Horde:
Anduin and Genn Greymane lead the charge on Lordaeron. They are initially successful, even destroying Horde Azerite War Machines, until Sylvanas uses her secret weapon--blight. To the horror of the Alliance, and some Horde including Saurfang, she unleashes Blight on the battlefield, killing both Alliance and Horde soldiers like. Then, she raises all the corpses as skeletons to fight for her.
The battle turns when Jaina shows up, blasting a hole into the side of Lordaeron. From here, more allies show up, including Alleria leading the Void Elves and Mekkatorque leading the gnomes.
Saurfang, growing disgusted with Sylvanas' actions, exchanges tense words with her in which he feels her actions have no honor and she mocks him by talking about raising his corpse to serve her. The Alliance finds Saurfang undefended and captures him to take back to the Stockades.
The Alliance confronts Sylvanas, but instead of surrendering Lordaeron, she blows it up with blight, making it uninhabitable by everyone.

Story of Kul Tiras
Kul Tiras is a maritime empire, currently led by Katherine Proudmoore. In the Third War, Daelin Proudmoore aggressively attacked Horde settlements and met his demise at the hands of the Horde, aided by his daughter, Jaina. This act of betrayal led Kul Tiras to shun Jaina and the Alliance, serving as an independent nation without the aid of the Alliance or the Horde.
Now in Battle for Azeroth, the Alliance need the assistance of the Kul Tiras navy and so Jaina returns to ask for aid and make amends.
Alliance Scenario
In the Alliance Scenario, Jaina decides to reach out to Kul Tiras, hoping to gain their naval aid in light of the Horde partnering with the Zandalari Trolls. However, this meeting goes quite poorly. While we see Katherine Proudmoore have tender feelings for her daughter in the Battle for Azeroth comic, here she is convinced by Lady Ashvane to brand Jaina as a traitor and sent into exile.
The player is then thrown into the prison of Tol Dagor and must make an escape. Here we meet Taelia, later revealed to be the daughter of Bolvar Fordragon, and we begin to set up footholds in Boralus. It is clear that the nation of Kul Tiras is in disarray, and hopefully we can show that Kul Tiras needs the Alliance as much as the Alliance needs the navy.

Stormsong Valley
House Stormsong has long blessed the Kul Tiran navy and Stormsong Valley served as the breadbasket for the empire. However, House Stormsong has allied with Queen Azshara, falling prey to the maddening whispers of the sea and forcing the inhabitants of the zone to work to exhaustion making boats. In a vision, we see that the tidesages are sacrificing the souls inside the Shrine of the Storm using forbidden magic. Reaching the Shrine of the Storm is a difficult task, and once we're there, we face off against Azshj'thul the Drowned, a Faceless One spawned from the remains of a poor tortured shipbuilder. Later in the zone, we push back against attacks on the coast and face off against the Pride of Azshara.
This zone culminates in the dungeon Shrine of the Storms.

Drustvar
Gorak Tul is the king of the drust, an ancient race defeated by the human settlers on Kul Tiras. While they were defeated, their spirits lived on in the forest, waiting for the perfect opportunity to return. He taught the power-hungry Lady Waycrest drust magic in return for her help returning Gorak Tul to life. Much of the storyline in Drustvar covers the effects of the drust magic and Heartsbane Coven on the zone, as Lady Waycrest kidnapped and corrupted village inhabitants to strengthen the Coven.
Lady Waycrest's daughter, Lucille, faces great tragedy as she's falsely accused of witchcraft, has her fiance assassinated on her wedding day, and watches her best friend succumb to drust magic. She reforms the Order of Embers, an ancient Kul Tiran order resurrected to battle the threat of witchcraft.
This zone culminates in the dungeon Waycrest Manor.

Tiragarde Sound
the Tiragarde Sound questline, we meet Lady Priscilla Ashvane, head of House Ashvane as well as the Ashvane Trading Company. We learn that she is smuggling illegal weapons to the pirate city of Freehold. Together with the pirates, she orchestrates an attack on Daelin's Gate, which the player is unsuccessful at stopping. We then confront Lady Ashvane in Boralus, right as she is about to convince Katherine to resign and transfer her political power. Ashvane shoots wildly into the crowd and escapes during the resulting chaos.
We then learn that Lady Ashvane is in league with Queen Azshara, launching an attack on the capital city of Boralus. This zone culminates in the dungeon Siege of Boralus, in which the Alliance must fend off attacks from both Lady Ashvane and the Horde.

Drust Magic
The Kul Tiran Human Allied Race can be Druids which draw upon their magic from the Drust. Ulfar, the last of the Drust Thornspeakers, teaches the inhabitants of Kul Tiras who wish to learn the ancient ways. While Drust magic is death magic, Ulfar explains that life and death are different parts of the cycle of nature. The Thornspeakers have also split from the rest of the Drust.
Players also encounter Drust magic as a terrible destructive force in Drustvar, where it corrupt the zone, possesses humans, and manifests itself through Lady Waycrest.

Jaina
Jaina tries to convince Kul Tiras, led by her mother Katherine Proudmoore, to help the Alliance and lend their navy. However, the inhabitants of Kul Tiras view Jaina as the treacherous "Daughter of the Sea," who betrayed her father. Ever since the events of Legion, in which she left Dalaran after the Horde were allowed back in to fight the Burning Legion, she has been wracked with guilt that her beliefs and empathy have hurt more they have helped--at Wrathgate, Theramore, and more.
As seen in the Alliance scenario, her attempts at reconciliation do not go well, partially due to Katherine's pride, which allows her to believe Lady Ashvane's rumors. While Jaina is absent from questing, her story picks up again at max level. After we reveal to Lady Katherine that Lady Ashvane is treacherous, Katherine reflects on the situation and attempts to reconcile with Jaina. To her horror, she learns that Jaina has been exiled to a dangerous place, where she is almost as good as dead.
The following scenario is not yet playable on the beta, but we aid Lady Katherine in rescuing Jaina, who is captured in a magical Drust forest and tormented by manifestations of her biggest fears and regrets. In this scenario, we defeat Jaina's mirror images, including voices of Daelin, Varian, and Rhonin who berate her respectively for the death of her father, salvaging peace after Wrathgate, and poorly managing the Kirin Tor. The scenario ends with defeating Gorak Tul, the king of the Drust.

Story of Zandalar
The Zandalar Empire is a proud and prosperous nation. Players were initially friendly to the Zandalari, aiding them in original Zul'Gurub. However, the Cataclysm led to a major rift in which Vol'jin stood against the Zandalari's new plans for domination time and time again. The Zandalari then play a large role in the Isle of Thunder in Mists of Pandaria, resurrecting Lei Shen, the Thunder King. We later learn that Lei Shen was practice for Zul, who now attempts to resurrect and control the ancient Zandalari kings in Battle for Azeroth.
Nobbel87 and Wowhead collaborated on a detailed
Story of the Zandalari Trolls
so you can learn about their lore every step of the way!
Horde Scenario
Sylvanas sends the player on a secret risky mission, along with First Arcanist Thalyssra and Rohkan. You must break out Princess Talanji from the Stormwind Stockades. Here you encounter Saurfang as well, who refuses to rejoin the Horde under Sylvanas and would rather stay in his cell.
When the Princess is rescued, we also free the Prophet Zul, who instigated the Zandalari's aggression in Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria. The Alliance is alerted to the Horde's escape and gives chase throughout the city of Stormwind. At one point, it seems than Jaina has them cornered, but Zul sets the city of Stormwind ablaze, using a stray torch dropped in the middle of the city, causing Jaina to turn back and save the city instead of capturing the captives.
On the way back to Zandalar, the Alliance fleet nearly catches up with the Horde. However, Talanji is able to call upon the spirit of Rezan, the loa of kings, who stomps on part of the fleet and then gusts the Horde ship to safety.
Once in Zandalar, the trolls are unwelcoming of the Horde intruders, but King Rastakhan gives us a chance to prove ourselves. Talanji worries that the King's council is corrupt and the kingdom faces threats from multiple places--the Blood Trolls in Nazmir, suspicious behavior from General Jakra'zet in the deserts of Vol'dun, and internal political plotting in Zuldazar.

Nazmir
In the Nazmir storyline, you help Princess Talanji fight the Blood Trolls, a bloodthirsty tribe that worships G'huun and attacks the Zandalari. Nazmir used to be a lush jungle but has since turned into a corrupted swamp since the Cataclysm. In the center of Nazmir is Uldir, an abandoned Titan experimentation facility. The Blood Trolls are doing everything in their power to shatter the final seal to Uldir, unleashing G'huun on the world.
Important characters in this zone are G'huun, the Blood God worshipped by the Blood Trolls, Hir'eek, a bat loa corrupted by G'huun, and Bwonsamdi, loa of the dead.

Vol'dun
We find ourselves in Vol'dun to track down General Jakra'zet, one of the members of the Zanchuli Council that has sided with Zul. Along the way we befriend the Vulpera and learn more about the different factions of the Sethrak. While initially we fight back against Sethrak that are enslaving the Vulpera, we learn that not all Sethrak are corrupt. After we find and rescue Warguard Rakera, who was exiled, we then work together with the Sethrak and the Vulpera to fight the Fatihless. This is a group of Sethrak led by Korthek who brought war upon the lands in the hopes of finding the remaining keys needing to summon Mythrax.
While we track down and defeat Korthek, this was simply a trap. General Jakra'zet was able to invade the Temple of Sethrallis and retrieve the missing pieces needed to summon Mythrax.

Zuldazar
The Prophet Zul leads a coup against the aging King Rastakhan, allying with the Mogu and sacrificing loa to gain more power. During the coup, Rastakhan is grievously wounded, hovering between life and death. We call upon the loa of kings, Rezan, as well as the loa of death, Bwonsamdi, to return him to full strength and spirit.
Once restored, Rastakhan leads the charge against Zul and learns of the plan to resurrect the first king of Zuldazar, similar to Zul's decision to resurrect the Thunder King in Pandaria. However, Rastakhan and Rezan are unable to stop Zul when confronted at the resting place of the Zandalari kings. Instead, in an unimplemented cutscene, Zul murders Rezan and we end up fighting the fallen loa later in the dungeon. The loss of the loa Rezan explains why the Prelates of Rezan, essentially Zandalari Paladins, have lost their powers and therefore why Zandalari Allied Race players cannot play Paladins.
Through looting and reading scrolls off the coast of Zandalar, we learn that Zul is in league with Queen Azshara, working together to corrupt the Zanchuli Council.
In the dungeons Atal'Dazar and King's Rest, we try to put a stop to Zul's thirst for power, defeating first Rezan and and then Dazar, the first king, who is controlled by Zul but still speaks out in irritation about his new master.

Zandalar Forever
After completing all Horde storylines, players must defund Zuldazar from Zul's combined forces, including Mythrax the Devourer.
In this scenario, Zul with the help of Mythrax fights to shatter the final seal to Uldir, under orders of the Blood God G'huun. King Rastakhan kills Zul while Talanji holds off Mythrax. Bwonsamdi even lends his aid to King Rastakhan as G'huun has been meddling with the souls of the dead intended for the Loa of Death.
The climatic event of facing off against Zul is not visible in game yet--it's marked as an unimplemented cinematic. However, based on datamining we know that King Rastakhan kills Zul. However Zul is then resurrected and transformed into Zul, Reborn, an encounter in Uldir. The fate of the final seal is also unknown, but broadcast text confirms that the seal at some point is shattered.
Datamining suggests that
Zuldazar will be a raid in Patch 8.1
, which parallels the Siege of Boralus on the Alliance side.

Future Story - Vol'jin
It appears that the Spirit of Vol'jin will advise Princess Talanji, encouraging her to be the leader for the Zandalari Trolls. We do not know if this means anything happens to King Rastakhan. Through broadcast text, we also learn that Talanji brings Vol'jin's Ashes to Atal'Dazar, the resting place of kings.
Perhaps this will lead in to the Zandalari Trolls joining the Horde, becoming an Allied Race.

War Campaign
The Alliance and Horde War Campaigns take players to the enemy continents. Completing parts of the War Campaign will unlock BFA followers and completing the entire campaign allows players to unlock Dark Iron Dwarves and Mag'har Orcs. This quest line will take some time to complete as parts are gated behind reputation.
Horde
In the Horde War Campaign, we are trying to aid Nathanos and Lilian Voss in their search the body of war hero Marshal M. Valentine. Along the way, Lilian aids a dying tidesage who will help them in return for turning into Forsaken after death. We learn a bit more about why Lilian now aids the Forsaken, after her fraught relationship with them in earlier expansions.
When we finally do find the body of Marshal M. Valentine, we also find the grave of Derek Proudmoore, the Prince of Kul Tiras. Derek's death at the hands of the orcs in the Second War led to a long-standing resentment on the part of his father, Daelin Proudmoore.
We then steal the Abyssal Scepter from the monastery in Boralus, burning some of the Proudmoore fleet while escaping.

Alliance
Currently the Alliance War Campaign is bugged on beta and we cannot progress as far as the Horde side. So far we have learned that the Horde has partnered with the San'layn, a vampiric undead elf you may remember from Icecrown Citadel. This is an agreement Princess Talanji is a bit skeptical about. An Alliance group, led by Shandris Feathermoon and assisted by John J. Keeshan, investigates the threat of the San'layn. In a memeable moment, a San'layn smashes a gnome.
We are unsuccessful at defeating the leader of the San'layn and the Void Elves, led by Magister Umbric, lead an attack of Gallywix. Unfortunately, Gallywix has created clones of himself and the Void Elves are not successful at defeating the original faction leader.
Shandris and Falstad later defeat Blood Prince Dreven, and the Alliance is later able to intercept a Mogu ship from Pandaria aiding the Zandalar.

War on Azeroth
Fighting continues on Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. This is most visible in the Arathi Highlands Warfront, a key location for both the Alliance and the Horde to secure control of northern Eastern Kingdoms.
The Battle for Azeroth missions also tell of even more invasions. On Kalimdor, the Horde hold parts of Darkshore and Ashenvale, while the Alliance are attacking the Crossroads, Azshara, Echo Isles, and Razor Hill, putting pressure on Orgrimmar. Both factions are investigating the ruins of Theramore.
On Eastern Kingdoms, the Alliance and Horde fight over Silverpine Forest and Hillsbrad Foothills and Alliance Paladins have even reclaimed Southshore.

Mag'har Orcs
The
Mag'har Orcs
joining the Horde is a bit more shocking and surprising. Eitrigg suggests to Sylvanas that they should collect upon a debt from Draenor, and we then take a fragment of the shard Garrosh used in Warlords of Draenor to travel back in time. But first, we must seek the assistance of the Bronze Dragonflight again and defeat Echoes of Garrosh and Gul'dan.
Once back in Draenor, we find that Mag'har Orcs are being hunted by the Lightbound and forced to worship the Light. The Lightbound are a group of fanatical Draenei and converted Orcs that appear to be the AU version of the
Lightforged Draenei
. Even though at the end of Warlords of Draenor, the Draenei and Orcs pledged to work side-by-side, the Draenei is trying to bend the will of everyone to worship the Light.
We learn that when the Naaru came to Draenor, the draenei were twisted and went down the path of fanaticism:
As a child, draenei scholars taught me to read and write. I liked them. Respected them.
Then the naaru came, and fanaticism took hold.
The draenei were reborn--no, they have a different word for it--re-forged in their precious Light.
Their belief blinds them, binds them to masters who seek to control the universe as surely as the Legion did.
In this scenario, we meet Geya'rah, the AU daughter of Durotan and Draka. Durotan has been killed by the Lightbound while Draka runs a Garrison. It is alluded that the son of Warchief Grommash in this timeline, has joined the Lightbound as well. Throughout the scenario, we receive hints that the Light, when unchecked, can destroy the land and lead to destructive fanaticism.
The scenario ends when the Lightbound, led by High Exarch Yrel, attack Grommash's forces directly. Grommash sacrifices himself, buying time for the remaining Mag'har to escape through the portal to our main timeline.

Story of Uldir
Uldir is the first raid of Battle for Azeroth. Brann Bronzebeard leads Alliance adventurers through the zone, while Princess Talanji leads the Horde.
Uldir was once a laboratory and quarantine facility as the titans tried to analyze and understand their ancient enemy, the Old Gods. It has since been shut down and sealed away for thousands of years.
G'huun, the final boss of the instance, was created when the Titans were experimenting hoping to find a way to destroy the Old Gods without harming Azeroth. The abomination was locked away with three seals, but at the start of Battle for Azeroth, only one seal remains. It appears that this seal is broken during a cinematic, likely during the Zandalar Forever scenario.
In the story of Nazmir, we learn that G'huun's corruption is seeping through the land, empowering the Blood Trolls and stealing away souls from Bwonsamdi, the loa of death.
In this instance, we will also find Mythrax the Devourer, raised during the Vol'dun storyline, and a resurrected Zul, killed during the Zandalar Forever scenario but later brought back to life.

I strongly recommend doing each outpost quest as soon as it becomes available, don't wait until you hit 120. They give reasonable xp for not a lot of time invested and actually save you some time later. Benefits are gaining the followers early so you can start getting them xp, whilst also opening up more mission completion opportunities early. By the time you get to 120 you'll have starting flight points in each zone for world quests and your followers should be well on their way to epic.
Just be careful running around doing your outpost quests at lower levels, as only mobs in your immediate quest areas are scaled to your level. Wander too far off the path to grab some herbs or ore and you'll find yourself facing 120 mobs :).
