Lower Return to Karazhan Dungeon Strategy Guide
卡拉赞
is a Level 110 dungeon located in Deadwind Pass. It is available in Mythic difficulty; Mythic+ and heroic mode are coming in Patch 7.2. In order to access the Return to Karazhan dungeon, players must complete an attunement quest that takes place in several Mythic dungeons.
Due to the dungeon's large size and unusually high boss count, it is designed to be completed in more than one sitting.
This guide will outline strategies and important role-based responsibilities for each of the bosses of Lower Return to Karazhan, as well as some tips on particularly threatening trash mobs.

Loot and Rewards
Because there are so many bosses, the Return to Karazhan loot table is complicated, and has been split into its own guide -

Loot from the first four bosses starts off at ilvl 855; loot from the last four bosses starts off at ilvl 860. Loot from the ninth boss starts at ilvl 875. All loot has a chance to proc a higher ilvl, up to a max of ilvl 895. If an item appears up to 10 ilvls above the base, it will be marked as Warforged in the tooltip. If an item procs +15 or higher, it wll be marked as Titanforged.
There are many relics from Return to Karazhan, many more than from Emerald Nightmare.

For Mythic+ Dungeons, loot does not drop per boss. At the end of the dungeon, a special chest will spawn that contains epic items from the dungeon's loot table, for which the base ilvl increases based on the
Mythic Keystone
level. The loot is personal, so each player should loot it to see what their reward is. Two pieces of loot are guaranteed for the party, and the items will be appropriate to the player's class/spec.
In addition, if you successfully complete a Mythic+ dungeon within the time allotted, the Keystone that was used to start the attempt will become upgraded by at least 1 level. The faster you clear the content, the larger the upgrade, up to a maximum of 3 levels higher.
If the party upgrades the keystone by more than one level, they will also receive the corresponding number of loot chests.
In 7.2, all Medium Length dungeons will give the following AP token based on the Keystone level. The amount of AP is multipled by your current Artifact Knowledge, which can be found in

The entrance to Return to Karazhan is at the left end of this bridgeWhen accessing the dungeon version of Karazhan, players must enter through the side entrance, not the conventional raid entrance. The dungeon entrance is located partway up the tower, where the bridge extends out to the wooden guard building. Flying mounts allow players to avoid fighting their way through the enemies in the guard building.
Return to Karazhan has two sections: the Lower Karazhan area, which contains Attumen the Huntsman, Moroes, the Opera Hall, Maiden of Virtue, and The Curator; and the Upper Karazhan Tower, which holds the Shade of Medivh, Mana Devourer, and Viz'aduum the Watcher bosses.
Because players do not enter Karazhan from the front entrance, the order of bosses in Lower Karazhan is slightly different from the original raid. The shortcuts that allow players to traverse different levels of the tower are not active, and the only boss players can initially attempt is the Opera Hall.
Following the Opera Hall, players can encounter Attumen the Huntsman, Moroes, or the Maiden of Virtue in whatever order they desire. Defeating Moroes will open one of the shortcuts that allows easier access from the entrance to Attumen's area. This guide will recommend Opera > Maiden > Moroes > Attumen to reduce backtracking, but other paths are equally viable.
After defeating The Curator, players gain access to the Upper Karazhan Tower, and unlock a "checkpoint" of sorts. If players leave the dungeon and return, they will re-enter at the start of this Upper Karazhan Tower area, instead of the Broken Stair area. This allows parties to attempt Return to Karazhan over multiple sessions, since it is so large and can take a long time to clear.

Upon entering the dungeon, players should turn left, heading up the paved ramp towards the Opera Hall Balcony. All other exits from the Broken Stair area are closed.

Opera Hall Tips & Strategy
Speak to Barnes, who is standing in the spotlightThe Opera Hall, as in the original Karazhan raid, has a repertoire of three potential encounters. Each week, the Opera will choose a new encounter, and all players who attempt the Return of Karazhan during that week will experience the same Opera Hall fight.
One player must speak to

Opera Hall: Beautiful Beast

When a Gang Ruffian's health is reduced to 0, they retire to the side of the stage and begin to dance. They will no longer use

Phase 2: The Fins

Players should focus on killing the Tidespeakers first, and expect to spend a long time in this phase as the heavy movement requirements of

will limit DPS uptime on Mrrgria.
Phase 3: Somewhere
Phase 3 gets hectic the longer it goes onOnce Mrrgria is brought to 50% health, Toe Knee will re-join the battle, and players must deal with both Mrrgria and Toe Knee's abilities.

Both Toe Knee and Mrrgria must die for the encounter to end. The two bosses' health pools are not linked. Players should focus on killing one of the two bosses first to remove their abilities from the encounter; Mrrgria is the most dangerous and should be the primary target.
Mrrgria will become stunned when reduced to 0 health, while Toe Knee will actually die - as in West Side Story - and it is his body that drops loot.

The

encounter has two phases: a mounted phase, where Attumen rides his steed,

; and a dismounted phase, which occurs when Midnight reaches 50% health. During the dismounted phase, Midnight will slowly regain her health, and when she reaches full health, Attumen will leap onto her back, resetting the fight to the first phase.
This is a single-target fight, as Attumen is not attackable during Phase 1 and Midnight is not attackable during Phase 2. The encounter requires moderate movement and good awareness.
Note that only the damage on Attumen really matters; Midnight heals back to full each time the party pushes the fight to Phase 2. Players should save their most powerful cooldowns for the Attumen phases.
Phase 1: Horse and Rider as One
The encounter begins with Attumen riding atop Midnight. Players will attack Midnight, but both Midnight and Attumen will attack players.
Examples of the Intangible Presence mechanic
Every 30 seconds during this phase, Attumen will cast

on the party.
This ability applies the magic

debuff to every player, dealing moderate DoT damage
However, only one player is affected by the "true" debuff, and dispelling that player's debuff will remove the debuff from all players

The "true" debuff can be identified by locating the player whose character model has a ghostly presence attached to it
This appears as a transparent, shimmering figure superimposed over the player's model (see screenshots)
All players should look at their model to help the healer identify who has been truly debuffed
The healer should then dispel that target, and only that target - do not dispel randomly!

Phase 2: Fighting on Foot
During this phase, players attack Attumen directly. Unlike Midnight, Attumen's health will not replenish during his 'off' phase, and the encounter can only end if players kill Attumen. The party should use its major DPS cooldowns here to burst Attumen down and end the fight in as few Phase 2 repeats as possible.
Midnight always aims Mezair at AttumenAlthough Midnight is not attackable, she will continue to attack the party with

Summoning Nightbane

is a secret, summonable boss in the lower half of the Return to Karazhan dungeon. Players must first complete a time trial by clicking all five of the

before their time runs out:
Upon opening the door after zoning into Karazhan, the following emote happens: "The strange chill of a dark presence winds through the air." This starts the timer.
The party must click the first crystal, in the Opera Hall audience in front of the stage, within 8 minutes. This requires defeating the Opera Hall encounter and killing a substantial amount of trash backstage, in the pit, and in the audience.
After the first crystal you will gain a buff,

, with a 6min duration. This is now your timer. As you click crystals, it will add a stacking buff and 5 minutes to the time you had left on your buff.
The Soul Fragments are located: 1 in the audience from Opera, 1 in the room on the left just before Maiden (you don’t need to kill her), 1 after you kill Moroes, 1 in the Spider Room (then you click the portal to the stairway), 1 after you kill Curator.
If you click all the

within the allotted time, after Curator, you run back to Nightbane's room and Medivh is there and he summons

Nightbane Tips and Strategy
The Nightbane encounter is a primarily single-target fight with three phases. Small adds are spawned every 20 seconds during Phases 1 and 3, and approximately every 10 seconds during Phase 2, but if the encounter is executed appropriately, there will only be 1-2 adds each time.
Throughout the entire encounter, Nightbane will cast

, targeting a random player and firing a projectile at their feet.
This projectile creates a large zone of

Due to the high damage and the nature of the fight, successful Reverberating Shadows casts will likely cause a wipe, or cause the healer to run OOM, leading to wipes later in the fight
The party should interrupt every Reverberating Shadows cast
With a 12-second cooldown, this may take 2 players to reliably interrupt, and a third player to act as back-up
Periodically, Nightbane will buff himself with

Things we discovered not in the guide:
For Maiden, keeping melee on the outside wall and keeping the healer/ranged spread out in the center minimizes LoS problems while making it pretty easy to drop sacred grounds.
For Curator, the entire group should stack in melee. The spark jump splash damage is relatively small and making it easy for melee to swap and destroy sparks is incredibly important. This also minimizes the area covered by power discharges.
For Shade, Flame Wreath will instantly detonate if it spawns with overlaps. Melee should spread out before each of Shade's specials to avoid this. Furthermore, Arcane Bolt can be interrupted and doing so makes the healer's life much easier.
For Mana Devourer, position the boss so that it's between energy voids. Picking up balls near/inside the void leads to much less spike damage (180k/sec in the void vs 300k every 4 secs per stack). It takes one second for a void to remove a stack and it takes some time to reach a void: picking up more than 3 balls outside of a void is very likely going to kill a dps as the void doesn't stop unstable mana ticks. We were around ilvl 855 and found that each of us picking up 3 balls was enough to kill the boss without the boss hitting 100% mana.
For Viz'aduum, phase 1 is the least hectic part of the fight. There's a ton of space to kite chaotic orbs to and Fel Beam is pretty easy to dodge. We found it far better to save heroism for Phase 3 - minimizing the number of times he triple casts chaotic shadows.

The party should stay close to the edge of a maximum-size Sacred Ground patch
When the Maiden of Virtue begins casting Mass Repentance, all players should step into the Sacred Ground
Ideally, players should step back out once they have acquired a stack of the Sacred Ground DoT effect, but this takes good timing
Otherwise, stay in the Sacred Ground until Mass Repentance has been cast and the stun is broken
Then use DPS cooldowns to break through the Holy Bulwark
That last part is a very bad idea.... this should be edited to emphasize the party each only get ONE stack of holy ground while Repentance is being cast. Multiple stacks are very deadly. Since the dot is 16 seconds jumping in and right back out even at the beginning of the Repentance cast is fine. If you get 3 stacks for example that's over 1million dmg every 2 seconds... that cannot be healed through.

Finished yesterday and must say one of the best things happened to WoW so far. Hands down to concept of "raid for 5 man". I wish they come with more of these as excitement was so huge when you know you must push your self over limits specially if you're low geared. DPS was so bad but we've managed to finish in 4 hours flat.
Real fun was when we've jumped into library :D
ps: total wipes 18, all bosses down and huge smile at the end.

Just a small correction, it is possible for the tank to gain Frostbite on Shade of Medivh, if it happens at the beginning of the fight the tank can lose aggro, especially if DPS have just used big cooldowns.

IF YOUR PARTY IS ZONING BACK IN AT THE ENTRANCE INSTEAD OF WHERE YOU LEFT OFF, here's what we did...
After a few hours, we finally made it to Viz'aduum, but it was well into the IRL wee hours and we became too fatigued to kill him. We came back the next day (after server reset) and reformed our party, but we were zoning back in at the entrance with all of the trash present.
We found we could zone in individually to the library and see each other, so we reformed the party INSIDE.
We had to re-clear the chess board, but that's one of the coolest parts, so we didn't mind.
Then we 2-shot Viz, and all was right with the world. Hope this helps someone.

The new chess event is incredibly bugged with lots of pathfinding issues. BM hunters are pretty much worthless in that fight as the pets won't do anything.

Stun Baron Rafe Dreuger when he begins to use Iron Whirlwind
I'm not sure if it's an error in the guide or a bug, but when we attempted Moroes, Baron Rafe Dreuger could not be stunned, both during the cast or while he was spinning. It made nuking him down rather difficult with only one ranged, and indeed we ended up getting overwhelmed.

Keep in mind, you may not register kill on your screen for this boss if you have quests for him. I did managed to turn in the quests however.

So it says Baron Rafe Dreuger is stunnable during his Iron Whirlwind. Currently in the instance right now and he is not stunnable at all.

I feel like this is something that should be noted because I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else:
The Nightbane encounter currently has a massive bug that makes it super difficult
The

debuff that is applied currently has a MAJOR bug. The debuff cannot be applied to the tank of an encounter, however,
ALL
damage from the debuff is applied to the tank, and not the person with the debuff on them.
I logged our last few attempts on Nightbane, just to make sure it wasn't Details! and Skada messing up, and sure enough.
This makes the fight insanely difficult to heal through in phase 3, as the tank is taking massive amounts of damage due to Bonecurse's

debuff in conjunction with Nightbane getting

. We were using our bloodlust in phase 2 to minimize stacks of Jagged Shards, but the only way we were able to down it was lusting in Phase 3 to keep up healing and burn Nightbane down before our tank died. When this bug is fixed, the encounter will become significantly easier, but at the moment it's really rough.

Currently, there's a bug with pets on Moroes. When the pet's owner uses the trap on an add, their pet will immediately go attack the add. You work around this simply by setting your pet to passive.

As a tank, in nearly all attempts, the fel beam was targeting ME too in phase 1.
There's probably a bug. In any case, DPS, do not hit the boss before the tank does.

An important note about Mana Devourer is that DKs can cast Anti-Magic Shell to wipe off stacks of Unstable Mana and prevent application of new stacks for the 5-second duration.

Thank you so much for the really useful and detailed guide.
There is just one thing that our group experienced in a different way last night: When fighting the Shade of Medivh, we came to the point to "ignore" the Piercing Missiles Channels and prioritize to interrupt Frost Bite. The damage of Piercing Missiles and the resulting debuff could be handled by me (tank) and our healer better than the movement requirements on order to break players free from their ice blocks (I should have mentioned that there were three casters in the group).
Of course we might have been lucky since he wasn't channeling Piercing Missiles very often. I would really recommend to have a careful eye on the incoming damage, but I guess this way the boss is much easier to deal with without melee DPS.

If your having difficulties with any of these bosses, be sure to pop a potion of prolonged power just BEFORE the boss fight starts. Once the encounter begins, your CD will be well on its way while you have the potion working in your favor. Also try drums if you don't have a mage for TW or shammie for Hero, ect. When fighting Moroes, as soon as he does coat check, be sure to shield if u have one or some other "defensive" ability.
