With the launch of Dragonflight, Professions in World of Warcraft underwent a drastic overhaul. Adding new Secondary Stats, mechanics, Specializations, and more, this overhaul changed both Crafting and Gathering Professions, allowing for more player engagement with the system. This Profession Overview contains everything you'll need to know to interact with these revamped mechanics in The War Within and beyond.
All Crafting and Gathering Professions in World of Warcraft
Before diving into the changes to the Profession system, players will first need to choose a Profession to work with. It's never a bad time to pick a new Profession, and the start of an Expansion is no exception. Players will be able to get in on the ground floor with an even footing or stick with their tried-and-true favorites. Whether you're a seasoned Alchemist or looking to pick up Tailoring for the first time, there's a Profession for everyone, each with their own unique reasons to play them!
There are no real "bad" Professions - while some may seem to offer more than others, each will provide bonuses to the player in their own way. In much the same way that you should play the Class and Spec that you enjoy, you should utilize the Professions you enjoy as well- after all, exploring Azeroth is meant to be fun!
Crafting Professions
Alchemy
Focused on creating potions, flasks, phials, and concoctions of all kinds,

primarily creates consumables to enhance player capabilities. While some traditional gear such as Trinkets can be created, Alchemists primarily focus on crafting items to buff themselves and party members. Alchemy is one of the most chosen Professions due to its inherent ability to extend the duration of Flasks, saving players time and gold in the long run.

Blacksmithing
Blacksmiths utilize the heat of a forge to bend various metals to their will. Primarily focused on crafting high-quality Weapons and Plate Armor,

additionally creates many Profession Tools and Accessories for other Professions, allowing them to increase their own Crafting and Gathering capabilities. While by no means the focus of the Profession, some consumables can also be created.
The War Within Blacksmithing Overview
Cooking
While not a traditional Crafting Profession, the Secondary Profession

functions in almost an identical way, minus the inclusion of Profession Specializations. Using meat, fish, and cooking materials found on both vendors and enemies in the world, Cooks create bountiful feasts that can feed both entire raid groups as well as individuals looking to fill their bellies. This food serves as a valuable buff - and can be the key to finding secrets in Azeroth.

Whether you want to dabble in armor and weapons, or want to make bombs to throw in a DPS rotation in a pinch, Engineers have something to pull out of their bag of tricks. This doesn't even consider the reason that many players prefer Engineering - mounts, battle pets, and fun utility like rocket boots!

A good Scribe commands both mastery of the arcane and a near-infinite pool of knowledge, and can impart both to other players. While

can create some weapons and Profession Equipment, it's not the focus of the Profession - contracts, cosmetic customizations, and powerful buffs are the bread and butter of what you'll create. Expect a particular focus on the ever-popular Darkmoon Deck trinkets as well.

Jewelcrafting

can create the finest jewelry and cut gems in all of Azeroth - for the right price. Jewelcrafters are primarily focused on creating cut gems at high quality to sell as socket-fillers for armor, but can also create ring and neck jewelry with powerful effects. Add in fun toys, pets, and the occasional mount craft, and players can find a well-balanced and lucrative profession hidden among the many ores that Azeroth has to offer.

Leatherworking
The only Profession that allows for the crafting of two different types of armor,

utilizes the hides and scales of your most fearsome foes to protect you while heading into battle. Leatherworkers can create Leather and Mail armor, as well as consumables such as Drums and Armor Kits to improve offensive and defensive capabilities. With a few Profession Accessories to round out its offerings, Leatherworking is a well-balanced Profession.

Tailoring
Whether you're looking to create the finest Cloth Armor or the largest bags in the Auction House,

Utilizing various types of cloth or fur found on enemies in the world, Tailors can create powerful magical gear and threads to wear or imbue your armor with. Consumables or bags, gear or spellthread, a great Tailor is always in demand - and on occasion, can create a flying carpet or two.

Gathering Professions
Fishing
Like Cooking,

is a Secondary Profession, meaning every character can use it. A Gathering Profession at heart, Fishing doesn't make use of a traditional Specialization tree, but it does exactly what you think - catches fish, and lots of them. With your trusty fishing pole (or even without!), you'll find fish throughout Azeroth, in its oceans, streams, raging rivers, and still ponds. With a little bit of luck, you might even fish up something more valuable as well - mounts.

Herbalism

is a gathering profession that concentrates on gathering valuable Herbs used primarily by Alchemy and Inscription. Using Finesse and Deftness to pluck the best herbs from a plant, Herbalists form a key link in the Profession supply chain, and this Gathering Profession is an excellent way to earn more passive gold income. Even if you're not picking the highest quality herbs, don't worry - you can refine them to make them even better!

Mining
Rock and stone - literally.

harvests ore deposits across Azeroth to gather metals, gems, and stone for Blacksmithing, Engineering, and Jewelcrafting. Another passive gold earner similar to Herbalism, Miners can gather as they naturally roam Azeroth completing daily quests and leveling alike, all while stockpiling valuable reagents for refinement or wholesale. Another key link in the Profession pipeline, you can't go wrong with Mining.

Skinning
The only Gathering Profession that inherently requires some level of combat,

is best suited for those that don't like to leave anything behind while they quest. By gathering reagents from the slain bodies of their foes, Skinners provide valuable leather, hides, and scales for Leatherworkers to ply their craft with. You don't have to search out these beasts, though - with lures and bait, you can make your foes come to you for easy pickings.

Crafting and Gathering Profession Mechanics
While leveling and using Professions, players will become familiar with several mechanics such as Specializations, Work Orders, Secondary Stats, Item Quality, and more. Each of these mechanics adds a new layer to Crafting and Gathering, transforming Professions from a simple click-and-you're-done process into a much more involved system.
Crafting and Gathering Profession Specializations
Profession Specializations are a secondary leveling mechanic beyond Profession Skill that allows players to have more agency in developing their Profession skills. Crafters and Gatherers can earn Knowledge Points to deepen their understanding of certain aspects of their Profession, allowing them to gain additional Skill, Secondary Stats, and even learn new recipes.
Unlike past iterations of Profession Specializations which restricted players to one narrow field, players will be able to eventually complete all Specializations their Profession has to offer by earning Knowledge Points in multiple ways, like finding an old book on a bookshelf in some long-forgotten ruin or filling a specialized Work Order from a Patron NPC - even finding special consumables nestled into the herbs and ore you gather.
Profession Specializations are a way to differentiate your Crafting and Gathering abilities from other players, opening opportunities for players within the same Guild to specialize in varying aspects of each Profession, thus adding more value to the community as a whole.

Profession Knowledge Points
Knowledge Points are a currency that enables Profession Specializations to function. In order to specialize, you'll need to allocate Knowledge in your selected tree for your Profession. Gaining Knowledge Points is done in three main ways - via Patron (NPC) crafting orders, finding Knowledge Point treasures, and utilizing First Craft bonuses.
Knowledge Point changes are permanent!
Once you use a Knowledge Point and save your changes, you will not be able to adjust it later.
The way you spend Knowledge is very important. While it is possible to learn everything a Specialization has to offer, this system is meant to take a significant time investment to maximize. Because
there is no current way to refund Knowledge
, having a plan in mind or a goal to work towards is highly recommended.
Knowledge Point Treasure Locations in The War Within
Profession Crafting Work Orders
The second largest change to Professions behind Specializations, Work Orders are now a key interaction between Crafters and players. While at one time the most powerful crafted items were soulbound, only allowing Crafters themselves to use them, players can now use Work Orders to commission soulbound gear from any profession, delivered right to their mailbox as if it was a purchase from the Auction House.
Additionally, players will utilize the new Patron Work Orders in The War Within as the primary method to obtain Knowledge Points for their Professions. These orders, placed by NPCs, are specific to each player and provide many rewards such as
匠人之敏
and Finishing Reagents.

Profession Item Recrafting
Recrafting items is a key part of the Profession gear cycle. While before, once an item was created it was "complete," Crafters can now continuously upgrade weapons, armor, and Profession Accessories throughout the lifecycle of an expansion.
Recrafting an item allows you to change optional reagents and increase the Quality of the finished product. Most items can be Recrafted up to Rank 5 Quality, while some items, such as gem cuts from Jewelcrafting, can reach only Rank 3 Quality and cannot be Recrafted.
While Recrafting is physically performed by Crafters with the proper Profession, non-crafters can still utilize the system via Work Orders. To learn more about how to use the Recrafting ability, take a look at our Profession Item Recrafting Guide:
Recrafting System Guide
Earning Experience with Gathering and Crafting Professions
Herbalism and Mining have always given small amounts of experience from mining nodes and picking herbs (Skinning has never given experience, and this has not changed). However, Gathering Professions now also generate a small amount of experience via First Craft Bonuses.
When you create a new item in a Crafting Profession, you are credited with what's known as a First Craft Bonus. Not only does this give you +1 Profession Knowledge, but it also gives you roughly 7% of a level's worth of experience. Crafters are limited to
30 First Craft Bonuses
for gaining experience. While you'll continue to gain Knowledge Points from completing these First Crafts, once the limit has been met, the experience bonus is removed.
You can use the Crafting Interface to filter for any items that will give you First Craft experience. This will filter out anything that does not give experience or that you've already created:
Herbalism and Mining do not give First Gathering experience, although they do give Knowledge Points for new discoveries.
Crafting-Specific Secondary Stats
Besides your primary Crafting Skill, players have access to several Secondary Profession Stats. These stats are only applied when Crafting items and can be boosted by both Specializations and Profession Equipment.
Ingenuity
: You have a x% chance to have an ingenious breakthrough when you Concentrate on a craft, refunding 50% of Concentration spent.
Ingenuity is a method to refill your Concentration quickly, allowing for a proc on crafts to refund a portion spent.
Resourcefulness
: You have a x% chance to use fewer tradable reagents.
A pretty straightforward stat, Resourcefulness allows for a chance of using fewer materials when crafting.
Multicraft
: You have a x% chance to craft additional items. Only works on recipes for stackable items.
Multicraft has been a powerful proc in some shape or form for many expansions, such as the

specialization from Burning Crusade or

from Battle for Azeroth. Granting a chance to craft extra items is a great way to increase profits!
Crafting Speed
: Crafting is x% faster.
This stat allows for faster crafting, great for mass-producing items for the Auction House or just to save some time.
Gathering-Specific Secondary Stats
Crafting Professions aren't the only ones that were changed - Gathering Professions boast their own set of secondary stats. These will come into play for Mining, Herbalism, and Skinning.
Finesse:
You have a x% chance to gather more of the primary reagent found here.
Similar to the Rank system from Legion and Battle for Azeroth, higher levels of Finesse allow you to gather more of the reagent from whatever node you are gathering. For instance, while a player may only gather 1-2 herbs from a node originally, with higher Finesse you might gather 4-5 herbs instead. 10 points of Finesse gives +1%.
Deftness:
Increases your gathering speed.
A fairly self-explanatory stat, this is similar to the old Racial bonuses to gathering speed. The more, the better- especially for long farming sessions! 3 points of Deftness gives +1%.
Perception:
Increases your ability to spot rare reagents while gathering.
This increases your chance of finding rare side gathers when mining, herbing, or skinning. This includes not only rare reagents but also valuable Knowledge-enhancing items. 10 points of Perception gives +1%.
Profession Reagents in The War Within
While every Profession utilizes different materials to create goods, certain Reagents are utilized by Crafters and Gatherers alike in order to create and commission powerful weapons, armor, and Profession Equipment.
How to Obtain and Use Artisan's Acuity
Similar to
匠人之勇
in Dragonflight,
匠人之敏
is a new Reagent that doubles as a currency in The War Within. Used to craft high-quality Profession Equipment, Weapons, Armor, and other gear, players will primarily gather this valuable resource via First Craft bonuses, obtaining Knowledge Points, and completing Patron Work Orders.
For players first entering The War Within, a quest in Dornogal can be quickly completed to earn 350
匠人之敏
- speaking to
罗尔迪拉
at (/way 59.2 55.8) allows you to complete the quest

. After selecting your reward, the
匠人之敏
will be provided from the pouch of reagents you choose.
If a player isn't keen on spending their
匠人之敏
to craft, they can instead utilize it as currency with the Artisan's Consortium.

in Dornogal offers a wide variety of Profession recipes, Knowledge Point manuals, and shipments of goods for sale, each purchased with Acuity.
Crafting Embellishments in The War Within
Embellishments are powerful secondary abilities that are either inherent to or can be crafted onto Crafted gear. Each providing a large bonus to the player, Embellishments are highly sought-after pieces of gear, and as such come with a
Unique-Equipped: Embellished (2)

Ok why are they focusing on blacksmithing and engineering..can you please show all the other professions,leather working ,enchanting,etc ..I'm not going to be a blacksmith nor an engineer..

Are there level requirements for the entry level green crafted gear yet? I liked crafting gear for unleveled alts that sit at the previous level cap. Crafters Marks are being replaced by quality levels but there's nothing that works like a Novice Crafters Mark making something a lower ilvl but also letting you equip the item at an earlier level.

is there any news on whether crafting orders will be available to alts? Like say I have one character that's a blacksmith, will it be able to fulfill crafting orders for one of my alts. If so, I think this will be a very valuable asset to alts and having specific characters for specific reasons

Admittedly, I want to mainly know if Inscription will actually have any value this time around? Ever since Glyphs were removed, the profession was lackluster at best, even with Missives and the other things which popped up in Shadowlands making it a very powerful profession. It would be nice to actually see its value finally return in Dragonflight.

In the end, the Crafting Skill accumulated is compared to the Recipe Difficulty - If your Crafting Skill is higher than the Recipe Difficulty of the item you're trying to craft, the item is crafted at maximum Quality.
I'm not sure if it's a bug, but I'm finding that this statement isn't true, especially of Inscription. My Skill exceeds the Recipe Difficulty (and even has ~32% Inspiration), all of my Inscription Accessories and Tools are maxed out, and I'm still crafting items at a lower Quality than expected.

So I noticed today, when trying to fish - I right-clicked my Underlight Angler and it disappeared out of my bags... apparently this action is now equipping these tools to the new equipment tab for professions. Cool. The issue is that now my Underlight Angler is no longer an item I can physically equip. If I remove it from the fishing equipment tab, it just turns into a "tool" in my bags. Also, I can no longer attach certain lures to it. When I find a lure I
can
use with it, it no longer displays a buff like it used to. So in order to see how long I have left on my lure, I have to open the fishing equipment tab and hover over the fishing pole...

I decided to prepare with professions for Dragonflight, got myself to 300 classics skill of leatherworking. Do i need anything else to be able to start Dragonflight leatherworking as it drops?
Same goes for other professions, as i am considering preparing tailoring on my alt as well.

Did they make proffesions a little bit too complicated or is just my lazyness to read this guide in detail? And if you are an altoholic and end up doing all proffesions in the game all this reading to do before you even start its like you are in college again and you have a ton of homework.
I mean i wanted some changes, like personal beneffits. Once upon a time it meant something when you had a proffesion: a buff or an extra enchant etc. Its too much now!
I was so happy that they gave up on borrowed powers and systems ovver systems on top of "hero azeroth needs you,, she bleeds and..."
So they went off and made other systems to deal with. The amount of work for this is worth at leat 2-3 new dungeons and a raid or so.
When Blizzard will understand that players what content not idiotic puzzles the you need a manual to learn to use them.

I have looked everywhere for this information with no luck and thought I'd try here.
You have 3 categories of quests listed in Dragonflight, "Campaign", "Quests" and "Profession".
These "Profession" quests seem to change all the time and if I do them there seems to be absolutely zero response. The quest doesn't go away, I get nothing from it, etc.
What are these quests for? I must be missing something pretty basic.
Edit: I finally got an answer for this. It's a way to track things you're making. For some reason it was turning on for me, it seems to have been fixed.

Does anyone know if professional secondary stats effect old world (previous expansions) gathering? In particular I'm curious about if perception helps out with fishing in old expansions for things like mounts, lunkers, or lunarfall carp.

Crafters will have a new daily limit of only 4 Public Work Orders that do not continue to stack. This is a huge decrease from the current max of 20.
Seems to be wrong. I completed 4 orders, next day when it says 2 orders available I completed one more—and it is 0 again. Repeated on 2 characters.

Dragonflight 9.0.5 - Go Back In Time!
I am not sure if this happens in ALL the professions but I am going to tell you what happened in Engineering. I had leveled my night elf warrior from 1-60 over a period of three years - most of it during the end days of Shadowlands. I actually started her back in BfA but never paid much attention to her. Especially when it came to her professions - Mining & Engineering. I had mostly used the mining as a way to get extra experience points in the beginning and later kept it up because I could supply ore to main toon for jewel crafting. Even that was half-hearted because it was easier to just buy ore from the auction house. I had learned maybe 1-30 points in all the expansions with the exception of Cataclysm and Outlands. Those three I had not even bothered with engineering.
I get to Dragonsflight and saw "upgraded" versions of several items that we did not have in Shadowlands but I missed - Neural Silencer MK3 - The original worked well even through a good portion of Shadowlands. I bought two from the auction and they were back to working the way they used to, sometimes even in dungeons. (BONUS!).
I decided I had to get my engineering up. I set a whole day aside. To make things easier I moved gold from all my characters to my engineer so I could just buy all the supplies for it. Thank you,

My skill number was improving and then with one quest (engineers will know which one!) I found I had to go back to Draenor to get one specific part, one I had only done ONCE. Something I forgot was also on a cooldown schedule. I didn't even have the tool required to do that one particular part. I go looking EVERYWHERE for the tool (bank, toons) because I need to continue. Somewhere, somehow I had gotten rid of the tool. To get the tool, I had to go all the way back to Vanilla. The first time, I only made it as far as "15" when I first started way back when I just decided on the profession but had only gone back to get the exact same tool. I remembered I had noticed the tool on the auction and it was easier to go that way. I paid two gold in 2020. Checking the auction really fast, it was now 80 gold and I could not find one of the Engineering or even the trade goods vendors selling the tool. Went all the way to Gadgetzan. It's like the game knew I needed it and was making me work for it.
I decided I'd put it off for too long. I bought the stuff I needed to level my Vanilla engineer. I know for a fact, I had allocated all my points in Dragonflight. I started doing the back and forth between trainer and anvil. What I didn't expect was by the time I got to 190 in Vanilla engineering, the ever-annoying "You have unspent ....." in the bottom right of my screen. (Using the same cadence as "You've got Mail" - Now I have to go watch the movie!) I have 5 unallocated points. Okay, I'll take it. By the time I'm at 250, I've got 7 points.
Summary: If you haven't completed/done previous expansions, especially if it's time to do some spring cleaning of your bank, bank toons, etc... you may want to try it. You will get the achievement but then you may get a small number of points to use in Dragonflight. That specialization may not be as far away as you thought. It's worth a shot. I'm almost to 300, pulling all 17 schematics I've collected in three years out of my bank finally! I currently have 9 pts to allocate. Have blizzard managed to screw up ONCE AGAIN with this whole "Crafting order bull!@#$s"
u get to sin half a day looking in trade for a crafter u ask for a craft in a specific item in a specific rank (5) someone says they can do it at a reasonable price (5k)
then after u send it they scam you and only give u a rank (3) item then they want MORE mats and money for recrafts
wasn't this new system to get rid of scamming ?
would be sooo much better if we could get to SEE before hand that the crafter actually CAN make it before you send it "in hopes" that you get it

Am I the only one who thinks this is way over complicated? Crafted a leg armor kit, three diamonds, next five kits i made were two diamonds and no skill improvement? it sucks

well I did the dual gathering thingy, but my main got to 100 minning,, now I concetrating on jewl crafting getting the neck and the rings..
the knowladge are a pain in the back.... there gated..and a time sink.. so yes it will prob take me until end of season 1 to get what I want.. but hopefull since this is a saga our gear will progress thru to midnight and the last titan and our gear will come with us this time.. and now start over.
