Welcome to Wowhead's guide on how to place a Profession Work Order order using the Work Order system. Here you'll find step-by-step instructions on how to commission and receive Work Orders, as well as the differences between Public, Personal, and Guild orders - all updated with the latest information!
The Importance of Profession Work Orders
Profession Work Orders, introduced with the Dragonflight Profession overhaul, are an important part of the crafting process. While Gathering Professions do not interact with this system, all Crafting Professions are able to receive and complete these Work Orders, and almost all require interacting with this system in order to train your Profession Skill to 100.
Luckily, the new system is intuitive and easy to use- and opens the door to a whole new world of crafting possibilities. Before, Soulbound crafts were restricted to the Crafter themselves, but now, players can place Work Order requests to obtain those items without having to learn the required Profession - meaning you don't have to feel locked into a specific set of Professions and can instead play how you want.
With an interface almost identical to the Auction House, players are able to place orders for craftable items they wish to purchase, and Crafters then fill those orders. The created item is automatically sent to the player's mailbox, making Work Orders quick, easy, and efficient.
Profession Work Order Types
Originally, Work Orders consisted of three types: Public, Guild, and Private. As of The War Within, a fourth Work Order type has been created: Patron Work Orders. These different Work Order types have several key differences in terms of how they are claimed, how often they can be claimed, whether materials are provided, and if a required quality is requested.
Public Work Orders
Public Work Orders are the most "general" order type - think of these as an Auction House listing for a crafting request. Players can specify the item they want, whether they provide materials for its creation, and how much they're offering to craft it, and Crafters can browse this list to claim orders at their leisure.
Personal Work Orders
Personal Work Orders are orders sent to a specific crafter - only that player will have the opportunity to complete that work order. If a player is looking to find a crafter in Trade Chat, this is how they would send that person an order.
Guild Work Orders
A middle ground between Public and Personal Work Orders, Guild orders have the convenience of the Auction House-style listing of Public orders while having a pseudo-exclusivity similar to Personal orders. Only players in your guild can place a Guild order for Crafters in-guild to see and complete.
Patron Work Orders
New to The War Within, Patron Work Orders have been introduced as a method to allow Crafters a guaranteed supply of Work Orders to complete. In terms of placing a Work Order, however, Patrons cannot be selected as recipients - meaning this system is only for Crafters to utilize, not players looking to have gear created for them.

Where are Crafting Order Stations in The War Within?
While Work Orders can be compared to an Auction House for crafting, players cannot place a Work Order from anywhere like those with the

may be able to. Players can find Crafting Order Clerks ready to take their orders in the Crafter's Enclave in Dornogal (/way 58 56), marked on their minimap by a large gold Gavel icon.

How to Create a Work Order
Creating a Profession Work Order itself is an easy process. The initial screen is virtually identical to the well-known Auction House layout, allowing players to browse through potential Crafting Products they'd like to order. Clicking any category will bring up all potential recipes available through the Work Order interface - namely, Bind on Pickup items that wouldn't be available through the normal Auction House.
Placing a Work Order Interface
Once you've decided on an item, clicking it will bring you directly to the order interface. While initially it may seem complicated, it's fairly straightforward:
]
1:
The name of the item you're looking to commission, and what Profession it is crafted with.
2:
By clicking this Star, you can set this recipe as a Favorite. Using this function, opening the Crafting Order Interface will automatically show you your favored recipes without having to dig through search menus.
3:
When placing a Work Order, you provide no, some, or all reagents for the craft. If a reagent has Quality, clicking on it will allow you to allocate how many of each quality you'd like to provide, allowing for more control over what you'll receive from a final product. Providing non-soulbound reagents are optional, while soulbound reagents cannot be provided by the Crafter and must be supplied by the requesting player. Finally, you will see the value of the Reagents required for the craft based off current Auction House prices: if you're not providing the materials, it's polite and good form to include the cost of the Reagents in your Commission.
4:
This dropdown menu allows you to swap between Public, Guild, and Personal orders. If a Personal order is selected, you can specify the name of the Crafter the order is being sent to, as well as a Minimum Quality craft requested. The Quality request also applies to Guild orders.
5:
Be sure to thank your crafters with a nice note! This area also allows for you to send a short message, in case there is anything you'd wish to specify on your order.
6:
You didn't think this would be free, did you? Crafters have to pay the bills! Setting a Commission is essentially setting the price you're going to pay- think of it as a reverse auction house posting. If you're unsure of the going rate for a particular craft, the Gavel button will show similar orders that have been recently placed, giving you a good idea of the market rate for what you're looking for. You can also set the Duration of your order here - from 12 hours up to 48 hours.
Optional Reagents
If you're creating an Order for an Armor or Weapon, the screen looks slightly different, with a new section:
With these Optional Reagents, you can have a bit more control over your desired craft.
Infuse with Power gives the opportunity to supply Reagents to set the item level of the craft.
By adding an Embellishment, an additional powerful secondary effect can be crafted onto the piece. Keep in mind, however, that this comes with a price- Embellished armor has a Unique-Equipped limit of two pieces.
Customizing your Secondary Stats with a Missive allows you to control what would otherwise be a random stat allocation. Players familiar with the Shadowlands Legendary crafting process should see the similarities here - determinism is good!
Once you've set your Commission, added your Reagents, and decided on the Duration of your order, the process is almost complete. Clicking Place Order will then add your Work Order to the listings, allowing Crafters to fill it once claimed. You'll be taken to another screen where you can check your active orders (helpfully called My Orders), allowing you to track them the same way you would track an active Auction.
All that's left now is to wait - once your order is filled, you'll receive it in the mail after a short delay!

When you click "Dragonflight Work Order Crafting Guide" at the bottom of this guide, it just brings you back to this same page. It's not an "other" guide.

Got a chuckle out of "Luckily, the new system is intuitive and easy to use"
It would be nice to just have (on any of these guides) a list of the crafting tables locations...

While the crafting order system does add a fun new dynamic to crafting, I'm really stuck with what to offer in terms of commissions for various items. Does anyone know of a guide or any rule of thumb in terms of knowing what to offer? It's also a bit of a hassle to get all the mats together for a craft - I keep needing to go back and forth between the auction house and the order stations/locations to get access to a list of what I need to supply. I ended up just writing out a list by hand, but it would be so much easier if the AH and order place were next to one another or you could pull up the list while at the AH.

Here's a video where the NPCs required actually are. Since the guide just skips over the location.

Ugh...wouldn't it just be easier to create these items as BoE's to be done and give directly to the person requesting it? This system seems unnecessarily complex to do for a very simplistic create and trade. Too many extra steps for a simple exchange. WTG Blizz....

The worst crafting idea ever imo... will stick to crafting and placing on the AH to sell items
