Lilian Voss, now an undead rogue, once was a human serving in the Scarlet Crusade.
After her resurrection and years of fighting against her enemies, she is now serving the Horde under Sylvanas Windrunner in Battle for Azeroth.
Cataclysm
Tirisfal Glades
In the revamped Undead starting zone, Tirisfal Glades, the players get to experience the start of and reasonings behind Lilian Voss’ life as an undead.
As a human, Lilian Voss served the Scarlet Crusade, a radicalized splinter group which evolved from the Order of the Silver Hand, the first paladins of Azeroth. Her father was Benedictus Voss, a High Priest of the Scarlet Crusade. As described in
A Daughter’s Embrace
, his daughter was trained to fight the undead:
The whisper continues
:
"My name is Lilian Voss. Before I died, I was a member of the Scarlet Crusade. My father, High Priest Voss, raised me to be a weapon against the plagued. I studied stealth, sorcery, martial arts, anything to make myself stronger. I gave up my childhood for him."
Her death as a human remains a mystery, but it is speculated that the adventurers who roamed Tirisfal Glades and hunted the Scarlet Crusade eventually killed Lilian as well.
After being resurrected by the Val’kyr, she managed to run away before getting turned into a member of the Forsaken. In disbelief of becoming undead and in high hopes that her father would eventually save her, she continued to run away,
but got caught by the Scarlet Crusade eventually
.
Sitting in her cage, Lieutenant Gebler of the Scarlet Crusade informs her that her father cannot accept her as his daughter any longer; driven by pure hate she transforms into a purple blaze, she escapes the cage, kills Gebler in front of the adventurer and flees.
Later on,
the adventurer finds a note from Benedictus Voss to all Scarlet Crusaders
in which he puts a bounty on his daughter’s head. Lilian recognizes that her father hated her in life and in death as well, and in front of the eyes of the adventurer, he kills Benedictus:
Lilian Voss says:
You raised me to be a killer. How am I doing, daddy?
High Priest Benedictus Voss says:
I, ah...
Lilian Voss says:
But wait... I remember now. You taught me to only kill the undead. So you do want me to kill myself, daddy?
High Priest Benedictus Voss says:
Lilian, I...
Lilian Voss says:
Then again, why kill myself... when I can kill YOU instead!
Mists of Pandaria
Scarlet Monastery
From there on, Lilian Voss plans to take revenge against the Scarlet Crusade. After raiding several camps in Tirisfal Glades, the adventurer meets her again as the
Hooded Crusader
in the Scarlet Halls.
Together with five adventurers he manages to get her hands on a register of every single member, the
Codex of the Crusade
- just what Lilian needed to continue her very personal crusade.
But Lilian’s thirst for revenge hasn’t been quenched, and with the help of the adventurers she manages to kill the leader of the Scarlet Crusade,
High Inquisitor Whitemane
, within the Scarlet Monastery. In the process she picks up the two
Blades of the Anointed
, which from there on out serve as their killing tools in the fight against the Scarlet Crusade.
Scholomance
But the Scarlet Crusade hasn’t been the only target on Lilian’s list; the adventurer meets her again in Scholomance, a cesspool of necromancy. The magic of raising and manipulating the dead is what destroyed Lilian’s life in the first place, so she wants to take revenge on everything and everyone who practices it.
With the help of the adventurers she plots to assassinate
Darkmaster Gandling
, a mortal necromancer who took over the Barov estate in order to exercise his foul experiments and to strengthen the ranks of the Cult of the Damned, led by Kel’Thuzad.
Weakened from fighting through all of his evil servants, Lilian can’t withstand Gandling’s necromantic powers, and he manages to turn her soul against the adventurers.
Luckily enough, the adventurers manage to free Lilian’s soul from Gandling’s grasp so she could reunite with her body. Gandling flees further into Scholomance, and Lilian is left behind, weakened and recuperating. Later on, and with the help of Alexei Barov, the adventurers finally kill Darkmaster Gandling, but the future of Lilian Voss was uncertain at this point.
Warlords of Draenor
In Warlords of Draenor, Lilian pays a visit to the adventurer’s garrison. After completing the quest
The Soulcutter
she awards players with her personal toy called
Lilian’s Warning Sign
.
Legion
With the introduction of Order Halls, Lilian Voss gets to play a role in Warcraft history again. She joined the Uncrowned, a group of elite rogues, in the Chamber of Shadows, Legion’s Rogue Order Hall. Why Lilian joined the Uncrowned remains a mystery.
Her plans as a member of the Uncrowned includes the disruption of Burning Legion activity on the Broken Shore. A cave near the Tomb of Sargeras is said to be a heart of operations for the Legion Forces, and Lilian forges a plan to destroy the cave. Together with
Bloodsail Buccaneer Admiral Tethys
, who wanted to take revenge on the rivaling pirates anyway, she steals fel-infused gunpowder from the Blacksail Crew.
Lilian Voss says:
No time to waste, Shadowblade. Let's move.
Fleet Admiral Tethys says:
Aye, I can hardly contain me excitement! I want te watch the
explosion!
In the end, the cave gets blown up by the Uncrowned,
and the Horde rogue adventurer receives Lilian Voss as a mission follower
.
Battle for Azeroth
Lilian and the Forsaken
In Battle for Azeroth we meet Lilian Voss as a member of the Horde. In Plunder Harbor she explains her status quo and motivation:
You seem to have embraced the Horde.
It seems my skills drew the attention of the powers that be. My servises were... "requested."
Did you catch the hidden meaning there? Sorry. Despite my profession, I'm not the best at subtlety.
Regardless, I know how to recognize an opportunity when I see one.
What sort of opportunity?
It doesn't take a prophet to see that Sylvanas will use this war as a means of bringing more Forsaken into the world.
My own conversion was... difficult. I had a lot to work through. Many scores to settle.
I haven't let go of all that. But I also feel an obligation to help the newly risen adapt to their situation. Perhaps I can spare them the sort of pain I endured.
And what of the Alliance?
In life, I was raised to hate the undead. Trained to destroy them.
When I became Forsaken, I hated myself most of all.
But now I see it is the Alliance that fosters this malice. The human kingdoms shun their former brothers and sisters because we remind them what's lurking beneath the facade of flesh.
It's time to end their cycle of hatred. The Alliance deserves to fall.
Lilian also shares information about the affiliation with the Uncrowned:
I thought you served the Uncrowned. Have you changed your allegiance?
Not exactly. When you see an opportunity, you take it. I've always had plans for my future. It's about time I do the work to make those plans a reality.
Under
Nathanos Blightcaller
she is instructed to undermine the Kul Tiran forces in Bridgeport.
After killing Captain Amalia Stone
and reviving her to become undeath, they try to obtain more sensitive Kul Tiran information through dead Marshal Valentine, who was buried at Barrowknoll Cemetery.
However, Valentine’s grave at the cemetery is empty; therefore Voss, together with Rexxar,
seek out Thomas Zelling
, a sick and dying tide-sage, who knew the location of Valentine’s real grave. In exchange for guaranteed care for his family after his death, Zelling joins forces with the Horde as an undead. Being cured from his disease, Zelling runs back to his family to inform them, but they reject him. Seing Zelling In total despair, Lilian feels sympathy, turns to him and says:
Lillian Voss says:
I tried to warn you, Zelling. The process changes you. The living won't accept you anymore.
Thomas Zelling says:
And where does that leave me? A mindless servant of the Banshee Queen?
Lillian Voss says:
Embrace the Forsaken and carve your own path. You'll be amongst those who accept you for what you've become.
Thomas Zelling says:
I will join you... and help you find Marshal Valentire. As long as you promise that my family remains unharmed.
Lillian Voss says:
You have my word. Come, Hero, return to Nathanos and inform him that we have what we need.
Together they find Valentine’s grave, and not only that: They also stumple upon Derek Proudmoore’s body, Jaina Proudmoore’s dead brother who died during the Second War. After their successful mission, Zelling and Rexxar exchange words regarding the promise to keep Zelling’s family safe:
Rexxar says:
You did well, Zelling. Until we meet again.
Thomas Zelling says:
Rexxar, wait. Is there... any news from my family? How are they doing?
Rexxar says:
Is it wise to dwell on your former life? Are you sure you want to know?
Thomas Zelling says:
I do. More than anything.
Rexxar says:
Your family is well. Your wife purchased a small home within Arom's Stand in Drustvar, and your children are well fed.
Thomas Zelling says:
That's... good. But how? We spent everything we had before my death--I mean, my transformation.
Rexxar says:
You asked Lilian Voss that they be taken care of. She made sure they were.
Thomas Zelling says:
Miss Voss... I will have to thank her. And you as well, Rexxar, for indulging me. It sets my mind at ease knowing they live well.
Rexxar says:
It is nothing. Stay safe, Zelling. And remember... this is now enemy territory for you.
Tides of Darkness
In 8.1.5, the story around Lilian and Thomas Zelling continues. Sylvanas wants to use the resurrected Derek Proudmoore as a secret weapon in the fight against the Alliance, but Baine and Thomas Zelling free and return him to Jaina Proudmoore. The betrayal is not a secret for long, and Sylvanas finds out about the traitors in her ranks:
Seemingly shocked by the execution of Thomas Zelling, Lilian plans to keep her promise regarding his family and questions the free will of Sylvanas' Forsaken:
Thomas Zelling has... had... a family in life. He made me promise to keep them safe, even after they called him a monster and shunned him for being undead. It is a promise I will continue to keep.
If they ever ask how he met his fate, I will tell them that he died a hero.
We Forsaken are raised with free will. That's what separates us from the Scourge. Sylvanas Windrunner used to take pride in that distinction.
But after all I have seen in this war, I must wonder if that still holds true.
Rise of Azshara
After Sylvanas left the Horde in most destructive fashion, Lilian decides to act in regards of the special situation the Forsaken have been left in.
Following the downfall of the Old God N’Zoth, Lilian is selected to represent the Forsaken in the council that has been elected to lead the Horde. While being honored, Lilian points out that there would be someone better suited for the job.
Thanks to the adventurer she learns about the fate of Calia Menethil, and later manages to arrange a meeting between Arthas’ sister, herself and Derek Proudmoore.
During this meeting she apologizes to Derek for being involved in his resurrection; she also introduces several night elves turned into undeads to Calia:
Lilian Voss says: My lady. Thank you for agreeing to meet with me. I am Lilian Voss.
Calia Menethil says:
Miss Voss. I once listened to your father's sermons. That was... long ago. Forgive me, I haven't introduced my companion. This is Lord Derek Proudmoore.
Lilian Voss says:
Lord Proudmoore. You should know that I played a part in the events that led to your undeath. I... regret much of what has happened.
Derek Proudmoore says:
Did you see what they did to me in that pyramid? How they tortured my mind? Intended to wield me as a weapon against those I love?
Lilian Voss says:
I did not know... at first. Once I did, I should have stopped it. Baine Bloodhoof showed the courage I lacked. If I could change the past, I would.
Calia Menethil says:
You didn't reach out to offer apologies. Why did you ask us here?
Lilian Voss says:
This champion witnessed your kindness toward Lord Proudmoore. How you helped him through his torment. Sadly, he is not the only one who suffered in the war.
Calia Menethil says:
Night elf sentinels? Why are you... By the Light!
Lilian Voss says:
Many fell at Teldrassil. Some were raised into rage and darkness, turned against their own people. They, too, have been abandoned.
Delaryn Summermoon says:
Death is... cold. Even for those who burn.
Derek Proudmoore says:
Calia, I know the pain they suffer. The hopelessness. You must do something for them.
Calia Menethil says:
We will, Derek. Together.
Calia Menethil says:
Greetings. I am Calia Menethil of Lordaeron. I will do my best to help you. Please, come with us.
Calia and Derek take their leave, being followed behind by Delaryn, Kitala Starshadow, and some night elven dark rangers.
Lilian Voss says:
That meeting went exactly as I'd hoped. I believe Calia Menethil can help many who are lost.
Lilian Voss says
: We will speak again soon. There is more work to be done.
Horde Council
Lilian Voss became at least the interim leader of the Forsaken. With Sylvanas gone, the Horde decided not to select a new Warchief, but to rather form a Horde Council. Lilian serves as the Forsaken representative on that council. She rarely speaks during meetings, as she is still finding her feet. She often has Calia Menethil by her side, as Calia has become an advisor to the Forsaken.
In a meeting with the Council, Lilian is shown to be worried about the future of her people, knowing they can't stay in Orgrimmar forever. In the same meeting, Talanji, queen of the Zandalari Trolls, requests that the Horde help her get revenge on the Alliance, particularly the Proudmoore family. Lillian fiercely defends Derek Proudmoore, stating more than once that he is Forsaken, and therefore he is part of the Horde. She also cautions against doing anything to risk the recently signed armistice between the Alliance and the Horde. Ultimately, the Horde Council offers support to Talanji in her rule as Queen, but refuses her requests for revenge.
Later, Jaina contacts Thrall, letting him know the Alliance have evidence that Dark Rangers are in Zandalar, and requesting a meeting. Thrall brings the request before the Horde Council, and Lillian supports the meeting, stating that they cannot waste a chance to capture Sylvanas. Thrall notices that she sounds unusually confident.

Very nicely written lore.... For me Lilian Voss is the most iconic female NPC in the whole game, maybe because when i was starting with WoW (Legion), she was the most remarkable NPC for me... I like her character very much
Thank You
