Derek Proudmoore was the commander of the legendary Third Fleet of Kul Tiras. Eldest son of Daelin and Katherine Proudmoore, and oldest brother of Tandred and Jaina Proudmoore, Derek died years before the events of World of Warcraft, during the Second War. Now, in Battle for Azeroth, his body was discovered by the Horde.
Before World of Warcraft
During the Second War, Derek was the commander of a Kul Tiran destroyer ship. The Alliance fleet, which the Kul Tirans were part of, were attacked near the island of Crestfall by dragon riders of the Black Tooth Grin Clan. While attempting to warn his father, Daelin Proudmoore, of the dangers of the dragon riders, Derek was killed by them, and his ship was sunk, making the recovery of Derek's body impossible.
Although the Battle of Crestfall ended with a crushing Alliance victory, it was widely considered a pyrrhic victory, as it resulted in the loss of a huge portion of Daelin's ships. This event was also the beginning of Daelin's hatred of the Orcs, a hatred that would fester until the end of his days.
Battle of Crestfall
Northwest of Khaz Modan, the Black Tooth Grin continued their sea voyage. Dragon riders sent by Nekros had found the vessels and delivered word of the Horde's retreat to Blackrock Spire. Dal'rend and Maim ordered the Black Tooth Grin to alter course and sail to Stormwind, which was still under Horde control. From there, the orcs would travel to Blackrock Spire by land. Yet if Dal'rend and Maim were hoping for an easy passage sound, they wouldn't find it.
Admiral Proudmoore was patrolling the water. Near the island of Crestfall, the Alliance navy overtook the Horde fleet. Just as in the battle near Zul'Dare, Proudmoore outmaneuvered his foes and hammered them with cannon fire. And just as before, the Horde had dragons. The beasts swopped down from the skies and engulfed the Alliance ships in the sheets of fire.
This time, Proudmoore did not retreat. Wildhammer gryphon riders had arrived to support his fleet. After being defeated by the dragons in Quel'Thalas, the dwarves had learned new tactics. They used their gryphons' mobility and speed to their advantage, outmaneuvering their larger foes and drawing their attention away from the Alliance boats. Lightning-infused stormhammers and dragon flame set the heavens alight, while cannon fire painted the waves red.
Dal'rend and Maim's ship and a few other vessels escaped the battle intact, but most of the Horde's fleet was sunk by Proudmoore's superior forces. The dragon riders scattered in all directions, fleeing before the wrath of the fearless gryphon riders.
The Alliance had won a decisive victory at sea and destroyed the Horde's navy, but the cost had been great. The red dragons had decimated Proudmoore's own ships. Many brave sailors had died, including the admiral's son. Proudmoore would never forget his child's death, and his hatred of the orcs would fester like an open wound until the end of his days.

Battle for Azeroth
Leading up to Battle for Azeroth, Jaina reminisces on the impact Derek's death had on her father. The
"Reunion" comic
is the first time we encounter Jaina since the start of Legion, exploring her motives to reconnect with Kul Tiras.
Many years after the Second War, Derek Proudmoore's body was discovered by accident by the Horde. While on a diving mission to rescue the body of former Kul Tiran Captain,
M·瓦伦丁元帅
, a second body was located and also brought to the surface. This body ended up being the body of the former Kul Tiran prince (
拿了就走
).
Derek's body was used as bait against the Proudmoore forces, distracting their guards away from Boralus to allow the Horde to sneak through Boralus and steal an ancient relic, the Abyssal Scepter (
计划已备
).
Tides of Vengeance
Derek Proudmoore was raised as a Forsaken after the events of the Battle of Dazar'alor. After the Horde's crushing defeat at the raid, he is to be used as a way to take revenge by being conditioned by Sylvanas Windrunner and then delivered once more to the Proudmoore family. Derek does not take this well, wailing in despair after his revival.
Baine Bloodhoof: What reason could you possibly have for this madness?!
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: Derek Proudmoore was a hero to the Kul Tirans.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: They are sure to stage a rescue attempt when they learn of his fate.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: And once his mind has been properly conditioned, we will allow the Proudmoores to recover their long-lost prince.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: ... so he can slaughter them in their sleep.
Baine Bloodhoof: This is too far!
Baine Bloodhoof: How many times must we forsake our honor?
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: There can be only victory or death for us, Baine.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: And death is mine to master.
Derek Proudmoore groans as he's being revived.
Derek Proudmoore: What... what is this? Why am I... What have you done to me?!
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: Why Lord Proudmoore, I've given you a chance to reunite with your family.
Derek Proudmoore wails after realizes he was revived as a Forsaken.
Derek can be found once more being kept captive in the Hall of Ritual in Dazar'alor. In there, he reminisces in despair about the events that led to his death, as well as calling for his family's name. The Tauren chieftain, Baine Bloodhoof, approaches him, mentioning that what was being done to Derek was not honorable by any means.
Derek Proudmoore says: Please... help me. I... I don't know what's happened. What's been done to me.
Derek Proudmoore says: I remember the battle. Orcish dragon riders. Our decks consumed by flame. I felt a blaze of agony, and then... darkness.
Derek Proudmoore says: I was... dead, wasn't I? But for how long? I am not quite alive, and yet... I don't understand this! Please... PLEASE... how is this possible?!
Derek Proudmoore says: Tell me... tell me, where is my father? My mother? Jaina... Tandred... please... please, I'm so alone! Don't... don't leave me alone!
Baine Bloodhoof says: This is wrong. There is no honor in it.
Baine Bloodhoof deeds Her deeds disgrace us all. We must set things right... before the Horde loses everything that made us strong.
An Unexpected Reunion
Baine decides it is time to take action, disgusted with Sylvanas' plan to torture the newly-revived Derek Proudmoore. While he sends Valeera Sanguinar to propose a meeting with the current Lord Admiral of Kul Tiras, Jaina Proudmoore (
拨乱反正
), him and Thomas Zelling hijack a forsaken ship and sail to Theramore to reunite Derek Proudmoore with his family (
苦涩的重聚
).
Baine: Lady Jaina, long has it been since we spoke peacefully in Theramore.
Jaina: Theramore is gone. You did not ask me here to reminisce.
Baine: No. I have come to return one who was lost.
Jaina: Derek? My own brother...I had thought better of you Baine! Tell me, is he the Banshee's puppet? Crammed full of blight? Is he the bomb this time?
Derek: Yes...That was the plan. But...Baine took me from Sylvanas before...before...I was twisted to her will. I'm still your brother, Jaina, for as long as stars do shine.
Jaina: Why?
Baine: The Horde has a sickness in it. We wage war while the Earthmother dies. We have forgotten what truly matters and my heart can bear it no longer.
Jaina: Sylvanas will kill you for this. She may not stop with you.
Baine: No life is worth living if we cannot be true to our nature. I return home to take what solace I can in my family. I hope you take solace in yours.
Jaina: Baine...Thank you.
Jaina is initially hesitant of Derek, but softens when he tells her that he'll always be her brother. It is unclear if Derek remains a sleeper agent for Sylvanas, or if he has free will. When the cinematic released, we wrote an
analysis of the reunion
covering Jaina's friendship with Baine, the references to "Daughter of the Sea," the ominous shots with the knife and more.
Following the reunion, Jaina hints that she will take him to the Netherlight Temple to meet Calia Menethil.
Derek Proudmoore says: Jaina... I can hardly believe it's you. When I set sail, you were a child. And now... Lord Admiral.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: So much has changed, Derek. I... There's something I must tell you--
Derek Proudmoore says: I know about father. The Horde spewed lies to poison me against you. But Baine explained the truth of what happened.
Derek Proudmoore says: You, mother and Tandred all endured so much. I'm pleased you have each other again, but... where does my path lead?
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: I don't know. But we will find the answer together.
Derek Proudmoore says: I can't come home... can I.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: No. Not yet. But I know others who have been through this. I believe they can help you.
Derek Proudmoore says: Will you come with me, Jaina? I... I don't know if I can do this alone.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Of course, Derek. No matter the storm, we will face it... as family.
Visions of N'Zoth
WARNING: STORY SPOILERS! Do not continue on if you don't want to be spoiled!
Since his resurrection forced by Sylvanas and the Horde, Derek suffers under the torment of undeath. His sister plans to organize a meeting with Calia Menethil to put an end to her brother’s agonies.
In Visions of N’Zoth, Calia seeks to help Lilian Voss and their much beloved Forsaken after Sylvanas left behind their own kin. The once human turned lightforged forsaken priestess is joined by Derek, who recognizes his true fate on her side from now on.
Calia: Thank you for coming, Jaina. I wanted you both to know... I have decided to leave Kul Tiras.
Jaina: You're leaving? Why?
Calia: I received a letter from Lilian Voss of the Forsaken. She asks for my help.
Calia: The Forsaken lost their queen. For many, it's the second time they've been abandoned. They feel adrift. Alone.
Jaina: But Calia, none of that is your--
Calia: They are my people, Jaina. My father gave everything for Lordaeron. I wish to honor him, and to prove worthy of the name I was born with. The name Menethil.
Derek: Right, then. So when do we leave?
Calia: I cannot ask you to come with me, Derek. Kul Tiras is your home.
Derek: I am a Proudmoore, and I always will be. But I've changed, and it's time to see where the tides will take me.
Jaina: I understand, though I will miss you both. Come. Mother and Tandred would never forgive me if I let you leave without a proper farewell.
Retcon from Tides of Darkness
Derek Proudmoore went through a retcon to be used during the BFA storyline. In the book he originally appeared on,
Tides of Darkness
, he was killed by the red dragons commanded by the Black Tooth Grin clan, but his body was instantly consumed by the dragons' flames. This would, obviously, not leave a body to be revived years and years after the Second War.
Derek barely noticed the anguish plain in the lead dragon‘s great golden eyes, or the green-skinned figure perched on its back. His mind was too busy calculating the impact the creatures could have upon this battle. Each one was larger than any ship but a destroyer, considerably faster and more agile, and airborne. Those massive claws could probably tear through hulls with ease, or snap masts like twigs. He had to warn the rest of the fleet—he had to warn his father!
Turning, Derek leaned over the crow‘s nest to shout down to his pilot. A movement caught his eye as he shifted, however, and he glanced up again. The lead dragon was close now, close enough for Derek to see the grin of the orc on its back, and it opened its long mouth wide. Derek saw a long, serpentine tongue surrounded by sharp triangular teeth almost as tall as he was. Then he saw a glow deep within the dragon‘s maw. It rushed forward, expanding as it came, and suddenly the world burst around him. He did not even have time to scream before the flames consumed him, and his body crumbled as it fell, burned to mere ash.
~ Tides of Darkness (World of Warcraft), p. 104.
Joining the Forsaken
Presumably after Sylvanas left the Horde and an armistice was signed with the Alliance, Derek joined the Forsaken. This caused conflict with the Zandalari queen, Talanji, who wanted revenge on the Proudmoores for Jaina's role in the death of King Rastakhan, Talanji's father. Lillian Voss, the new leader of the Forsaken, defended Derek, stating that he was a member of the Forsaken and the Horde.
For her part, Talanji eventually put aside her anger and joined the Horde Council after the Horde assisted her in a fight against rebels in her kingdom.
