This guide will cover strategies that may be used to be successful on PvE Island Expeditions of all difficulties.
I'd like to hear your feedback on the information here, as well as other strategies you may have tried not listed here. Please post your own strategies in the comments.
Disclaimer:
There are many ways players can go about Island Expeditions and ultimately due to their randomness, there is no one detailed strategy that works in all situations. In addition, there are many reasons that players may do Island Expeditions such as Artifact Power, achievements, collectibles, or just to hang out and explore some content. These goals do impact the way players may want to play out Island Expeditions and therefore not all of the strategies listed below are ideal. Make sure to check out the reasoning behind some strategies and see if it may be worth trying.
Things to Know
Before getting into detail, there is some bits of information that may prove useful to know before jumping into Island Expeditions.
Gameplay Changes in Patch 8.1 Tides of Vengeance
Tides of Vengeance is making a few changes to how Island Expeditions work and will have impacts on the best way to complete Island Expeditions. Here are changes to Islands that may effect gameplay:
Azerite score values for killing creatures and looting chests have been adjusted.
Rare Elite creatures give more score.
Non-rare enemies give significantly less score.
Chests / Satchels / Mining nodes in general give less score
Azerite Wounds, significantly more rares, and Azerite Extractors add more sources of gaining score and to counter some of the nerfs above.
Island Expedition rewards are based on enemies present on the Island and NOT what you kill. The "rare-reward farming strategy" is to just play normally at a difficulty you can handle.
The Unbound Azerite elemental event no longer occurs every Island.
The Best 3-Man Composition
Island Expeditions are designed to be doable with any composition of players and therefore have no role requirements. However some comps will be clearly better.
From my
personal experience
I would rank the following group comps from best to worst:
PvE
1 Tank, 2 DPS
- By far the best for clearing the Island fast, especially if the tank can keep themselves alive through a lot of enemies.
1 Tank, 1 Healer, 1 DPS
- Really strong all around and able to do large pulls even on high difficulties depending on how geared the group is, but overall not as fast as the first option unless abusing consumable strategies.
3 DPS
- Without a tank, pulling can be slow due to the daze mechanic. This kind of group is good at killing specific NPCs, but will be significantly slower than a group with a tank in almost all cases.
2+ Healers
- Anymore than 1 healer is extremely unnecessary and not recommended at all unless it is "Healer Week" in the Island Expedition consumables rotation. By far the slowest at clearing the Island.
PvP
1 Healer, 2 DPS
- Generally a good comp to engage in 3v3 PvP combat. Can also take on the creatures of Islands at a fairly fast rate. Perhaps not the fastest but a safe option in case PvP combat occurs often.
1 Tank, 1 Healer, 1 DPS
- This comp is sturdy against PvE and PvP combat allowing you to clear the Island fairly quick and not be able to get wiped easily. Won't be able to outpace an enemy comp that excels at PvE however.
1 Tank, 2 DPS
- A great PvE rush comp and potentially the best comp if contact with the other team can be avoided. The idea is to clear creatures and objectives as fast as possible and outpace the other team before being discovered by the enemy team.
Island Expedition Difficulty
Below you will find some information about the differences that the difficulty setting makes on Island Expeditions. You can queue for Island Expeditions on Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and PvP difficulties.
PvP Island Expeditions use Mythic mode values for creatures.

Gaining Azerite In Island Expeditions
During the Island Expedition, your team score (Azerite) is increased by killing creatures and looting / mining Azerite Sources . The amount of Azerite awarded varies based on what it was obtained from. This is broken down in the table below to show the differences between looting and killing.
*These number values use the amount of Azerite given on Normal Island Expeditions. Heroic Island Expeditions increase all of these numbers by 50% and Mythic/PvP increases these numbers by 100%.

Dangerous Creatures of Island Expeditions
The creatures that make this list are creatures with abilities that are extremely deadly and often unavoidable. Creatures with unavoidable abilities that either deal a large amount of damage or cause you to lose control of your character are dangerous on their own and especially dangerous if pulled with other creatures that have more abilities that need to be avoided.
It is highly suggested that if you encounter one of these creatures, either avoid the creature or fight it without pulling many other creatures.
Here is a quick list of the dangerous creatures encountered on Island Expeditions. As there are many creatures on the Islands, more deadly enemies will be added as they are discovered.
*On Mythic Island Expeditions, many of these abilities not only deal more damage but have much faster casting times and have longer-lasting effects. Some of these creatures are still dangerous on Normal difficulty but their true reason for being on this list is based on Mythic difficulty.

Disclaimer:
Due to the randomization in Island Expeditions such as events, spawn locations, Islands, enemy team AI, creatures, and items; a step-by-step strategy telling exactly what to do and where to go is not possible. However, here are some guidelines on how to be successfull.
General Strategy
Viable Difficulties: All
Suggested Difficulty: Any
Reasoning: This strategy is best if you don't want to do anything fancy.
The single best advice to going about Island Expeditions normally is to
view the map often.
The map gives information on areas that may yield high amounts of Azerite. The map actively updates with information as players explore the Island and as events happen so checking it often is important to keep updated with what is around you.
New in Tides of Vengeance!
With creatures being relocated and score values being adjusted. Seeking and killing rares are important and worth the effort. Non-rare elites are worth significantly less and are only really useful for obtaining the Azerite Energy buff.
Scouted Azerite:
Location of some Azerite source that has yet to be revealed. This usually marks the location of a potential Powerful Foe or Bonus Objective. Not every objective will be marked this way however. When a member of your expedition team explores this area the icon will vanish.
Azerite Source:
Location of an interactable that awards Azerite. Usually a Chest, Satchel, or Mining Node containing Azerite.
Powerful Foe:
A Rare or Rare Elite enemy awarding a large amount of Azerite.
Bonus Objective:
Location of a friendly NPC in need of help. The quest details are discovered when any member of your team walks up to the NPC and tracked on the Bonus Objectives quest tracker.
Enemy Faction Member:
Location of a member of the enemy faction.
Alliance Ship:
Kul'Tiran ship, spawn location of Alliance members. Horde players too close will be bombarded by the ship cannons.
Horde Ship:
Zandalari ship, spawn location of Horde members. Alliance players too close will be bombarded by the ship cannons.
Portal:
Location of a portal that will take you to another location.
Azerite Extractor Location:
Location that a faction may deploy an Azerite Extractor that will slowly generate Azerite for that team until destroyed by creatures or the other faction. Destroying an enemy Azerite Extractor will allow you to replace it with your own.
Azerite Rupture Location:
Location of an Azerite Rupture. A player may deploy an Azerite Extractor that will attract Azerite themed enemies until a rare spawn shows up. Once the rare spawn is defeated, this icon vanishes.
3 Things to do Before the Island Expedition Begins:

View the map and plan a path, areas marked with a are worth checking out immediately.
Try to spot out the enemy ship, if you can't actually see the ship then its likely on the shorelines that are obscured by the terrain. Knowing the enemy team start location is important to predict where they may try to explore first.
For the next steps, it is important to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your current group. A tank or healer may allow your group to pull more enemies at once to compensate for less damage output, while a group of 3 damage dealers may need to pull less enemies but be able to kill enemies quickly.
Once the Island Expedition starts:
Make your way towards a red "X" marked on the map, avoiding enemies if you want to get there quickly. Enemies do not leash easily so anything you pull you will likely have to kill at some point. Elite enemies do give decent Azerite for killing them as well as a temporary buff to the team's damage and health when picking up the orb they drop.
Complete objectives and kill rares encountered along the way. These two symbols are often the largest sources of Azerite.
Gather Azerite from easy to get mining/chest/satchel nodes . A quick click and a 2 second cast can earn you nearly as much Azerite as killing an Elite enemy that could take 30 seconds to kill.
Avoid the other faction unless attempting to deny them a large amount of Azerite. Early on, members of the enemy faction are not worth a lot of Azerite, so it is not worth going out of the way to kill them.
After both team collects some Azerite, an Unbound Azerite elemental might spawns somewhere on the map. Possible locations will marked with a red "X" . The Expedition captain NPC will notify you when this occurs. This event can also be seen by white smoke erupting from the ground in the area the Azerite is spawning.
Once the Unbound Azerite event occurs:
Finish killing whatever it is you are fighting.
Mount up and head over to the areas marked on the map immediately.
Loot the easy to get Azerite nodes around the elemental before taking the time to focus kill the Unbound Azerite elemental. You can expect the other faction to show up soon so if you show up first, make sure to secure as much Azerite for your score as early as possible.
Once the event has been cleared, continue heading to areas marked on the map and prepare for an invasion event.
At this point, depending on the difficulty, an invasion event will soon occur. This event spawns a lot of rare creatures as well as lootable chests containing Azerite in certain areas around the Island. Like the elemental, the expedition captain will mention when this happens and many locations on the map will be marked with a red "X"
The expedition captain will warn you when an invasion occurs and what type of enemies they are.
The timing of invasions are based on the combined score of
both teams
. It is possible to win before an invasion occurs if the other team is doing poorly.
When an invasion event occurs:
Take note of the type of invasion, some have gameplay effects. A full list of invasions and some details can be found in our

.
If you are very close to victory, simply head to the nearest event marked on the map. Most invasion locations consist of a named rare NPC and a lootable chest.
if you need a bit more Azerite to win, work your way towards a large cluster of invasion locations and keep an eye out for elite rare NPCs with large chests/satchels that are locked or a portal . A rare elite next to locked chest/satchels means that NPC is the invasion "boss". The invasion boss must be defeated to unlock the chests which reward more Azerite than any other chest/satchel. Not all invasions will have a "boss" or portal, such as a Saurok Warband and Venture Company goons.
If victory has yet to be claimed even after clearing all invasion areas, finish looting anything around the Island you may have missed and kill the enemy faction.
Winning Strategy
Viable Difficulties: Normal, Heroic, and Mythic
Suggested Difficulty: Mythic
Reasoning: This strategy is useful if you want to secure a win against the enemy AI team at all costs.
Can be combined with other strategies.
I do not recommend this strategy, but it works.
When it comes to PvE Island Expeditions, winning can actually be very easy, even if tackling high difficulty Islands at minimum gear levels. If the main goal is to just win an Island, exploiting flaws in the enemy team AI can essentially prevent the other team from gaining Azerite, allowing your team to take their time gaining enough Azerite to win.
When near players, the AI of the enemy team will usually do one of the following:
Fight the player, only ever going a couple yards away to try and loot nearby Azerite sources.
Retreat back to their ship.
Because of this, say a healer or any player that can stay alive for a long period of time on your team decides to stand near the enemy team the entire Island Expedition and simply keep themselves alive, the enemy team will never gain any Azerite aside from the Azerite that is available directly around them. This can go on forever, giving the rest of the team all the time in the world to loot enough Azerite to win every time.
This method works well to gain a lead if you are behind and want the victory.
This method is not recommended however unless you are really desperate for a win, as this slows down the pacing of the Island Expedition drastically. You can however, speed this up by having the person who is distracting the enemy team occasionally tag some creatures and drag them over to the enemy team. Often the enemy AI will by mistake kill the creature even though they do not have a tag on it, and credit for killing it will go to your team.

Blizzard
In Tides of Vengeance, all players on an Expedition will have a chance to receive cosmetic rewards based on the island’s inhabitants, rather than which enemies were specifically defeated. That chance will again be higher on higher difficulties, but there will be no need to strategize around invaders. The most efficient way to receive cosmetic rewards will be whatever tactics cause you to complete the Island quickly, on the highest difficulty that you’re comfortable.
Island Expedition reward chances ARE increased on higher difficulties of Island Expeditions. While Normal Islands may be easier and faster, the chance of getting the rewards is less.
The way Island Expedition rewards are awarded has changed in Patch 8.1 Tides of Vengeance and now only requires the creature types to be present on the Island for their loot tables to be possible items awarded at the end. You no longer have to kill specific enemies to earn them.
The most efficient way of grinding out rare items from Island Expeditions is to find a difficulty you can grind comfortably and finish the Island as fast as possible. If you have a group of geared friends, grinding Mythic Islands may be the best for the increased chance at rewards. If you intend to grind rewards and level, or just want to take it slow and easy, then Normal Islands are the best.
If you are farming these types of rewards exclusively
it is okay to lose
. A win or loss of an Island Expedition only affects the Artifact Power you receive for the completion reward.

items on Island Expeditions can be very powerful and allow the party to get a little creative when it comes to killing enemies or exploring the Island. There are many items that can even be used in a combo for an even greater effect. If you have a ton of

to spend and want to speed things up, consider using some of these items in creative ways.
Due to the limited availability of these items, these strategies may not be available to everyone and only available during certain weeks.
Notable Items
The following items are very powerful and you can play around them to clear Islands very quickly. More detailed information on how to use these items will be added in the near future.
暗月火酒
- The first item is not a Seafarer Dubloon item, but rather purchased during the Darkmoon Faire for 25
暗月刃喉鱼
. This works in Island Expeditions and significantly increases the speed that players collect Mining nodes. This bonus is similar to the Highmountain Tauren racial bonus and does not stack with it.

These items cause your character to enter a vehicle and have access to new abilities. They last for 10 minutes or until destroyed. The

abilities is a 1 minute cooldown that deals massive damage to all enemies around the tank. It also has
投掷巨石
which overall does a decent amount of AoE damage on a large group of enemies. Because these do not have a lot of health, this pairs well with players who can actually tank the creatures.
A.T.O.M.I.K. Target Painter
- This item deals massive damage to all enemies in a fairly large radius. The item has a 1 second cast time followed by a 10 second arming time after which the blast will hit the targeted area. Pulling a large amount of enemies and then having a tank hold them in the blast area is extremely effective at killing large groups of enemies instantly.

- This item causes you to essentially gain "Stealth" for 30 minutes. However this is better than stealth in that you can mount, attack, and interact with objects without canceling the effect. This works on all the creatures of the Island but not the enemy team. This allows you to go around the Island and loot Azerite easily and without getting threat on any creatures.
Trick Vest
- This is a very strong item that lets you absorb a fair amount of damage. After the absorb is broken, you let loose an explosion that deals a very large amount of damage to all enemies near you. Because this item absorbs damage and deals a lot of AoE damage, pulling a large amount of enemies and then using this item will let you kill and survive large pulls.

- These items allow players who heal to deal a decent amount of damage in a cone in front of them. While the damage is not crazy, it does allow for a double healer group to heal a tank and keep that tank alive while automatically doing AoE damage to kill enemies.

- This item is powerful in general, but extremely powerful in the hands of classes with guaranteed crit mechanics such as Havoc Demon Hunters and Fire Mages.
Leveling Strategies and Tips
Required Difficulty: Normal
Can be combined with other strategies.
Players may level entirely from level 110-120 through Island Expeditions provided you have unlocked Island Expeditions on your account on one character already. This has become a preferred method to leveling characters for some players. There are some strong advantages and disadvantages to leveling this way so this section will start with a pros and cons chart.
Pros:
Cons:
Best source of gaining Artifact Power AND Leveling at the same time.
Have a head-start on obtaining Artifact Power for max-level Azerite Armor.
Winning at least 1 Island Expedition a week gives a huge bonus of Azerite and Experience.
Creatures scale reasonably with your level.
Extremely easy and fast early on if geared from Legion raids and using Legion legendaries.
Collect Island Expedition rewards while leveling.
No gear rewards while leveling (with the exception of BoE transmog items that are level 120)
Not as fast as questing if solely grinding Island Expeditions.
Requires Island Expeditions unlocked on your account, therefore only really useful to level subsequent characters after your first.
Leveling through Island Expeditions is not much different than leveling out in the world, and therefore you can take advantage of tactics used in normal leveling.
The source of experience from Island Expeditions is as follows:
Creature kill experience (affected by Rested XP)
Island Expedition win bonus (~71,000 Experience)
Island Expedition Weekly Win World Quest (98,700 Experience)
If the goal is to primarily level, follow the General Strategy provided here in the guide. Not much changes between leveling in Islands and doing them normally at max level. In many cases a geared level 110 character can be more powerful than a level 120 character in Normal Island Expeditions.
While leveling make sure to take advantage of the following:
Legion Legendaries (

If you are leveling a character that has played Legion, chances are you may have a few legendaries to choose from that are very powerful to use up until Level 116. Remember if you have 1000

on one character and buy a class-specific random legendary token to mail to another character you plan to level.

You will be earning these while you level and they can be tremendously helpful on the Island Expeditions. I suggest saving these for the last few levels when things begin to get a bit more difficult and you lose whatever gear advantages you had with Legion items. Also remember you can spend

Darkmoon Faire and Other Seasonal XP Buffs:
Times when the Darkmoon Faire is active and times when a holiday that provides a buff to experience is active are great to speed up leveling in general.

give your character a large boost in movement speed for 25 seconds (faster than a mount). They can't be used in combat but can be used prior to combat and persist. Useful for getting around the Island to objectives really quickly or gathering a large group of enemies.

Have you attempted to push rares while not allowing the AI team to gain much Azerite? I've seen the first event which is always the Azerite Elementals spawn after a few rares are killed 5-6 on normal.

being as i pug these all the time i can atest to the fact that there's no planing but i would say that at least 1/2 of the time some one is of some where else. i find that all 3 staying together is some what of a rarity.

If you goal is just to level up, I'm hearing the best strategy is to kill mobs, but do not loot any azerite sources other than the kills. I tried a few and was getting about 100k xp and then the 71k xp bonus per run and each run was still pretty fast. Note that I was 111 pally tank with heirloom weapon/shield and it was pretty easy and we also easily won them all. (I do have 100% rested, maybe that also really jacks this strat?) That makes it about 3x faster than dungeon crawling? Guessing. I skimmed this guide but didn't see a part saying to not farm the azerite sources at all - no chests, no mining, no bags, etc.

Seafarers debloons can also be picked up as an item coin on the ground around islands. Picked a few up after clearing an area and ran back to it and saw the brown coins on the ground.

don't need to be used only by healers. The
healing
that procs it can be
ANY
kind of healing. I noticed that on my BM hunter (while healing the tanking pet and staying close to the mobs), my Blood DK, my Elemental Shaman with the earth shield talent (think enhance has it too).
Before that, I saw a Prot Paladin using it and wrecking havoc on large packs of mobs, as he heals himself or others (talented) with that spec skill.
Also a note on
Brainsmasher Brew
. This works wonders too on large packs, and can be comboed with other consumables, specially with
A.T.O.M.I.K. Target Painter
, as the stun effect works even on the enemy team (even if they get stunned for fewer time).
Above all else, the best clue is that you can buy these items on their weeks (with the spare dubloons, even if you won't need them on that toon), send them to your alts that will do these (they are BoA after all), especially if you'll be leveling them. Also you CAN save items from previous vendors and use them in another's vendor week IE. These items are only locked out from vendoring, not using.
So when, let's say the vendor of
Sun Stone
/
Lightprism
pops up, you can log in to your toon with lots of dubloons, get into an IE, buy some, to send to alts to be used whenever you wish. Even better if you're aiming at farming the collectibles from the IE on a locked Legion geared alt. The combo from legendaries, raid sets, early BfA azerite and these items is astounding.

This is the most arduously-compiled and detailed strategy guide on Expeditions I've yet seen. Major kudos to the author!

The biggest problem I've seen is that
so
many WoW players have ignored the patch notes and similar guides. As such, I want to highlight two of the most important factors regarding Expeditions:
-
1) You
DO NOT
need to farm Rares anymore. They still offer a sizeable amount of Azerite (both from themselves and the treasures they often guard), but they are
not
a factor in loot tables anymore! Ergo, you don't need to tunnel-vision Rares.
2) The Azerite Extractor: mine/loot all nearby Azerite, and
then
deploy the Extractor.
DO NOT
sit around to kill the mobs that spawn from it. The point of the mobs spawning is to make it more difficult for the enemy to capture it.
- The Extractor only gives you Azerite (over time) if left alone, and it adds up very quickly.
- Repeatedly killing the spawned mobs, although offering a decent amount of Azerite, eventually destroys the Extractor option altogether. Why waste time on frustrating mobs when you can leave it be and get
free
Azerite?
- In a coordinated (eg: Mythic/PvP) team, it may be a strategy to "diffuse" the Extractor, but *please* don't do this in casual PvE. It's frustrating to progression and usually ends up in several needless deaths from a lack of communication. Again, the spawned mobs are there to deter the
enemy
.
