Swapping Covenants can be a daunting task in Shadowlands and this guide goes over the optimal way to swap Covenants and catch up on Renown quickly!

Introduction
The topic of Covenant swapping is one that has surprisingly not been discussed much over the course of Patch 9.0.5. However with a good bit of Covenant tuning and changes coming in Patch 9.1, I feel it's something that should certainly be discussed. While you are able to acquire Renown through a wide array of in-game activities, there is most certainly an "optimal" route that you should follow if you are looking to complete the grind as soon as possible. There is also the option of leveling every Covenant to 40 Renown if you don't want to grind out those levels before 9.1's release. If you are interested in optimizing your Covenant swap while also learning a few "tricks" along the way, then you are in the right place.
Joining a new Covenant for the first time can be a daunting task. You have new followers, quests, missions, building and a large, empty anima tank to fill. There is also the small task of leveling your Renown from 1-40 which can surprisingly be done in a few days depending on how much time you invest.
What Stays and What You Can "Transfer"
Transferring Anima Between Covenants
One of the biggest questions that I received when swapping Covenants was "Do anima tokens stay in your characters bags when you transfer"? The answer is Yes! If you reach a certain point in a Covenant where you don't want to deposit anymore anima, simply store it in your bags until you make the swap.
To a similar extent, the anima in your Covenant's sanctum reservoir WILL stay behind when you transfer Covenants. It will also be there if/when you ever decide to swap back to said Covenant. There however is a way to "transfer" anima from one Covenants reservoir to the next...
By purchasing the 100 anima items from your Covenant's armor vendor, you are able to "store" multiples of them in your bag, swap Covenants and then sell them to the Covenant for a full refund of 100 anima. This essentially allows you to empty the Renown tank of the previous Covenant before you leave it, funding more buildings and missions in your new home. Keep in mind it has to be these 100 anima items SPECIFICALLY. The ones for anima and X (like Great Offerings, Rubies and such) are not re-sellable.
The Souls that are left collected during your stay in said Covenant will be left behind though, without any way to transfer them.
Any buildings that you construct will also remain in said Covenant after you leave it. Your campaign will require you to level all of them to Rank 1 to progress but then rest is up to you. If you have a bit of spare anima around I would recommend upgrading the Transportation networks with every Covenant if possible to make a bit easier if you ever return. The Covenant specific ones (Queen's Conservatory, Path of Ascension) I feel aren't really worth the upgrades as they both cost a lot of anima and souls.
Two Soul Quests in One Week
Speaking of souls, you are able to do both the 5 souls and 15 soul quest in the same week, as long as you progress your campaign to Renown 24 within the same week. It is VERY important to not do/turn in the 5 souls quest before this point or the second one will not pop in the same week. The quest spawning once you swap Covenants also appears to be a bit buggy, but a simple relog has fixed it both times for me.
You are indeed able to do souls quests with multiple Covenants a week as well so don't be afraid of doing it with one and missing out on the other.
Follower/Mission Table
If you have completed most wings of Torghast you should have unlocked both Croman and Meatball as followers. They are not Covenant specific companions and will actually swap Covenants with you wherever you go! This is especially helpful early on when trying to complete both campaign mission as well as ones that might be a bit tough for your low level followers. Keep in mind their actual level influences how high your troops are a swell, which means that if they are mid 30's your troops are somewhere within the 25-35 range typically. I would recommend trying to complete as much of the mission campaign as possible while doing the higher experience mission whenever they are up. Having your followers at a decent rank if you swap back will make things much easier and less convoluted.
*It is important to note that you do not want to have Croman or Meatball out on a mission when you swap Covenants. There has been a reported bug of them getting stuck in that Covenant (and mission) permanently.
Soulbinds and Conduit Energy
One the more exciting things about swapping Covenants is that Conduit energy becomes even more of a pain! When you swap and progress through that Covenant's storyline you will eventually unlock all three of your Soulbinds. Sadly, they do not have any kind of Conduit slots filled in. You will have to fill the Potency, Finesse and Endurance slots using your currently available amount of Conduit energy. Each Soulbind should have 4 "slots" to fill if you are taking a direct path down to the final ability which means that a total of 12 Conduits energy is required to fill them all with one full path. If you are unsure if what spec/build you want might be interested in playing with them whenever you return, filling in the non-DPS slots is a pretty safe bet and will "save" you a but of Conduit energy as well.
Grinding Renown in Your New Covenant
Renown can drop from multiple sources such as:
Mythic +
Heroic Dungeons
Mythic 0 Dungeons
Raiding
Battlegrounds
Calling Boxes
World Bosses
2 Weekly Renown Quests (Guaranteed)
Covenant Campaign (Guaranteed)
1k Weekly Anima Quest (Guaranteed)
There does not seem to be a cap on the amount of Renown that you can acquire per day and bosses can drop Renown (Shriekwing on LFR and then Mythic) more than once, as long as it is a different difficulty. The Drop rate of Renown however
DOES
seem to fall off a good bit once you reach the early 20's from non-guaranteed sources. In my Necrolord Covenant leveling, I went 13 straight Mythic + dungeons without a single Renown token dropping, then had level 32 and 33 drop within 3 runs. RNG is RNG but with their not being really any kind of clarification from Blizzard on drop rates and such at higher levels, it does become increasingly frustrating at times.
Content difficulty does not seem to affect the drop rate of Renown either, it is more about repetition. Instead of running +15 keys for drops, it is much easier to run +2/3 keys as they give Valor as well as (what appears) to be the same Renown drop rate. Raiding can also be a good source of Renown if you are in a guild that clears it weekly but keep in mind that you MIGHT want to try and grind out at least 1 Potency Conduit before raid if you are still in progression or are worried about meeting certain DPS checks.
Optimal Renown Leveling Route
If you want to optimize your leveling route and spend the least amount of time possible in your new covenant, this is the route that I would suggest...
Renown 1-29: Mythic +/Raiding/PVP Grind
Renown 30: Weekly World Boss
Renown 31-32: Soul Questline (See Souls section, you can have two in one week if done properly)
Renown 33-39: Covenant Campaign
Renown 40: Anima Weekly 1,000 Anima Quest
Going in this specific order ensures that your higher levels (30-40) are all guaranteed which saves a TREMENDOUS amount of time. Take it from someone who did the Campaign early on, the 30-40 grind in RNG content is miserable. The Covenant Campaign gives 7 Renown guaranteed which means that when you add in the two Soul quests and the 1k Anima weekly, that is 10 Renown right there.
Daily Covenant Callings can also have a change to give Renown but it is random. If they do the Renown will be displayed as a reward when you pick up the actual quest and not in the calling box upon completion. These can be used to supplement the 30-40 grind if need be or just fill in random holes early on. It is important to note that IF the calling displays Renown as a reward you most likely want to do it asap as there are reports of it disappearing at times once player Renown increased. Calling that don't reward Renown can also be saved if you are going to be swapping Covenants in the next 3 days. They will re-roll their rewards and have a chance of giving Renown in that new Covenant.
The Renown grind can be done in a mere few days if you grind out Mythic + or other options that are fast in-game. Keep in mind that you can ALSO stick with the same Covenant for more than one reset which means you will get 2 more weekly Renown quests, more callings and another lockout for the current raid. There is no real reason to rush through the campaign but the option is also there following the aforementioned pathing if need be.
*I would hold this calling if I were swapping Covenants within 2 days as it does not reward Renown with my current Covenant.*
Returning to a Previous Covenant
In the early stages of Alpha/Beta this was mentioned to be something that would take a lot of time and effort to do, but it is actually something you can do WHILE grinding Renown in other Covenants and then hold until you are ready. The quest is called "Rebuilding Our Trust" and it can be picked up in Oribos from that Covenants Emissary.
It tasks you with completing well...tasks in that Covenants zone. World Quests and Dungeons (Mythic + does work) are the fastest way to fill the bar. One Mists of Tirna Scithe run amounted to about 30% roughly for me and since you are probably going to be running a good bit of Mythic +, I would advise grabbing this quest the moment you leave your previous one. Once you complete the first part of the quest, be sure to turn THAT part in as soon as possible, as it is a two part quest. Once the weekly reset rolls around you should then pick up the second part which is....the exact same thing and fill in the bar.
Be sure to NOT turn in the second portion until you are ready to go back to that specific Covenant.
It will say that this quest is actually a "weekly" (implying that it goes away upon reset) but that is not the case.
You will be able to hold the second version of that quest in your log as long as you want, or until Blizzard fixes the issues and bugs with Covenant swapping. You can even go to a Different Covenant than the one you left your initial one for, level the Renown there, then go back.
Let's say for example I was Night Fae at Renown 40. I then left Night Fae and swapped to Necrolord. I would want to pick up the Night Fae rejoining quest as soon as I became a Necrolord to have it in my quest log and make progress towards it WHILE leveling Necrolord Renown. I then have the option of going from Necrolord to Kyrian and then Kyrian to Venthyr all while STILL having the initial Night Fae rejoin quest completed in my quest log.
It all seems overly complicated (and probably not intended) but this has been our adventures through Covenant leveling. There are bugs in a lot of random places, tricks you can do with anima vendors and just general things that probably SHOULD not be working that way, but just are for whatever reason. I would assume that with Patch 9.1 on the horizon Blizzard might take another look at the Renown leveling/Covenant swapping system but who knows if what we think should not be working actually is or not. Either way I hope you found this guide worthwhile and helpful in your new Covenant adventure!
Thank you again to both

who were a massive help with this project.

Great guide! Something I plan on doing with my main in the near future, so this is very helpful for knowing the ins and outs of navigating the transitions between covenants.

Hi I just wanted to point out this part:
Optimal Renown Leveling Route
If you want to optimize your leveling route and spend the least amount of time possible in your new covenant, this is the route that I would suggest...
Renown 1-29: Mythic +/Raiding/PVP Grind
Renown 30: Weekly World Boss
Renown 31-32: Soul Questline (See Souls section, you can have two in one week if done properly)
Renown 33-39: Covenant Campaign
Renown 40: Anima Weekly 1,000 Anima Quest
This is actually super slow and basic route. What you can do instead is spam Random Heroic Dungeons, each Heroic Dungeon has a lot of chance to grant you renown level. You can grind it from 1 to 40, without needing to do a world boss, mythic +, simply Random Heroic Dungeons spam.

So theres an option now to buy anima tokens from a covenant vendor?
When was that added?

The author could do a better job with the % needed for the bar to be filled. The absolute quickest way is to-do the dungs in zone your cov is based in (the one your switching to) on
normal...
. Each boss gives 12% and as there is ~4 bosses per dung you will get around 35-50% per run. So just by doing two normal dungs per zone and a wq your done.

You should probably elaborate on the Two Soul Quests - I assume that you can do one quest in each Covenant, as long as the quests require a different amount of souls, depending on your Renown with the respective Covenant, correct?

I've transferred anima several times now, each time using items worth more than 100 anima.
They key element is likely that I had
not added
any of these higher cost items
to my collections
. While they were in my bags, they all registered being
not known / not collected
yet, even though I had the physical item in my inventory. Upon joining a new covenant, I was able to vendor these items for anima - having learned
no new appearances or toys
in the process.

i got 32lvls in first day. To be able to make a quest for 20 souls asap. Before lvl 30 you obtain renown mark from almost every heroic random dungeon (fastest way to get it in my vision. Cos takes around 10 min average). After lvl 30 everything become much more painful. So better if you have 3 "daily quests" for chests. That you took before. Cos it guarantee 3 marks for you. After lvl 30 only "epic" daily gives u the mark. Already switched 3 covenants so far. The major problem - you cannot back to ur original covenant too often. I back to them before reset. But at this reset I still havent 2nd quest. Just words "come later". W8ing this "later" for 6 days already. Looks like impossible to do it faster than 2 resets.
p.s. Also no point to buy 100anima parts for reselling. its just wasting ur bag space. Just brink 2x32 bags and put all animas in it. During week I usually gather around 24-26k anima. That required around 60 bag slots. But with 100 anima items u can get only 6k anima this way.

What happens to the mog sets between covenants? For example if I had the reknown set which costs anima for night fae, does it move over to another covenant mog or not, and if not will it return to my mog set when I go back?

I'm just curious, and not claiming it is, but would the buying up of anima items to refund at the new covenant be considered an exploit? I'm wondering if they will make it impossible to do this in the future if it is well known.

Renown 1-29: Mythic +/Raiding/PVP Grind
Renown 30: Weekly World Boss
Renown 31-32: Soul Questline (See Souls section, you can have two in one week if done properly)
Renown 33-39: Covenant Campaign
Renown 40: Anima Weekly 1,000 Anima Quest
Going in this specific order ensures that your higher levels (30-40) are all guaranteed which saves a TREMENDOUS amount of time.
Also worth noting that you can do the guaranteed renown things as soon as you hit renown 25, considering levels 36-40 are purely cosmetic. So if cosmetics aren't your objective, you will save even more time by getting the last 5 renown just playing normally.

Currently with your Convenant if you the 3 main buildings to level 3 you get the anima boost on WQs. However if you switch convenants and do not have all 3 buildings to that level do you still keep the achievement and thus the WQ anima boost?

Great guide, but it's bloody sad reading it. Everything starting back to zero if you start a new covenant, your followers need to be gotten again, your upgrades need to be done again, no more souls, it really is a good guide, but just a very very bad system that deters changing covenants.
I suppose as you noted, the upgrades stay behind, so if you ever return you are already at a head start the second time around.

This is helpful since Blizz has totally failed at balancing covenant abilities so far. I went venthyr warlock because that appealed to me the most, but now I'm just getting tired of being massively inferior to those that are night fae.

My experience with the process of "transferring" anima. I had about 33,000 in my Night Fae anima reservoir. Before switching covenants I purchased 1
影叶符文牡鹿
for 5,000 anima, 8
魅夜朝臣的球茎
for 3,500 anima each, and 1
活力献祭的回忆
for 250 anima from the Night Fae Renown Quartermaster
艾尔雯
. After switching to Kyrian and doing several of the introductory Kyrian Campaign quests I unlocked the Kyrian Sanctum. Then I refunded my Anima purchased items to
看护者席奥
the Elysian Hold Innkeeper to complete the anima "transfer". Now, at this point in 9.1 especially in the Korthia area, anima is being given away in substantial amounts from rares, chests, and as daily quest rewards but I wanted to maximize my anima input into my new covenant because I enjoy the adventure table and want to upgrade the sanctum as much as I can, as fast as I can.
EDIT (9.1.5): With the introduction of
旅行者的心能宝箱
the process I described in my earlier comment is no longer necessary. This item can be obtained from
奥·达拉
who is located next to the flight path NPC in upper level of Oribos. With this, anima can be "transferred" from one covenant to another easily.

Thorgast is awesome for renown farm. Doing lvl 5 is easy for any spec and it always granted +1 renown till, at least 25 renown level. If you are geared - you can even skip most trash (and anima sources) and just kill end bosses on each levels.

When i reach renown 31, farming again 5 lvl Thorgast didn't get me a renown upgrade. Will try higher lvl.
