How to Play Windwalker Monks in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Windwalker Monks are masters of Zen. Their attacks are as fast as lightning and as swift as the wind. Windwalker Monks are a melee DPS spec that uses two resources, Chi and Energy. Energy builds up over time and you spend it to use abilities such as
which will also grant you Chi, which in turn you can use for other abilities such as
. The spec generally functions around balancing these resources in order to get the most possible uses out of several abilities with cooldowns like
and
.
Windwalker Monks have fantastic mobility with spells like
,
, and
. One of the most favorable melee AoE specs, Windwalkers' combo
,
, and
allow them to be one of the stronger specs for AoE and Mythic Plus. They also have many tools, like
, allowing them to be a very powerful spec in PvP.
Although Windwalker lacks an immunity, it does have the defensive abilities,
and
. Windwalker generally struggles with single target damage, which can be a disadvantage in most Raid encounters.
For more information, see the
Beginner's Guide
and
Rotation Guide
pages.
How Different Does Windwalker Monk Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Windwalker Monk in the Shadowlands Pre-patch is almost identical to how it played in Battle for Azeroth up to this point. There are a few minor changes. Instead of using
lined up with
and other damage abilities as a big burst ability, this will be (somewhat) covered by
after level 58.
Until then,
is largely a "fire and forget" spell and
is now primarily a small "execute" that you use when it's available. Other than that change, there is no practical difference in how Windwalker plays given the lack of mechanical impact of the loss of Corruption and the continued existence of Azerite Traits during the pre-patch.
Changes for Windwalker Monk in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Returning and Altered abilities
- Returns as a usable spell. It does neither a ton of healing nor a ton of damage. You press it when you need a small heal but don't want to stop to cast. You'll look to use this on cooldown since it generates 1 Chi for 15 energy.
- Now one of Windwalker's primary DPS cooldown with
.
After level 58
, Xuen should be more impactful as he generates the "Gale Burst" that used to be a part of
3x during his duration and it is currently an AoE around him rather than a single target.
However, till that point he's just a "fire and forget" ability.
- Moved from a PvP Talent to a baseline ability. Although it's nice to have another defensive, it does return the (in my opinion) unhealthy playstyle of using
before
for more DPS.
,
, and
- Removed from the GCD.
Talent Changes
- Becomes a talent that you use in AOE situations. It will proc separately from the Azerite Trait that it is derived from.
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Spec Class in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Windwalkers had several spells come off the GCD;
,
, and
.
and
being off the GCD are both good QoL changes that make both abilities easier to use, slightly stronger, and cuts down on the empty GCDs at the start of a fight. However, the chance to
takes the talent from functionally unusable and awful to a contender for the best talent in the tier. It makes it the default for sustained AOE and a consideration for single target if you prefer it over
.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Windwalker Monk in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
In Shadowlands, Blizzard is instituting caps on AoE abilities in order to stem the tide of massive AoE pulling as a viable strategy in content like Mythic Plus.
- Capped at 6 targets. It still deals 100% damage to your primary target and 50% to each of (now) 5 other targets.
- Capped at 6 targets. In addition to this cap, Mark of the Crane is now capped at 6 targets.
- Currently uncapped.
- Current uncapped.
Neither of these caps has any functional effect on how or when we use these abilities.

How Strong is Windwalker Monk in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Windwalker
should
regain some ground relative to other specs with the removal of Corruption. However, there's no reason to believe that Windwalker won't retain its below-average performance in Raids, above average performance in M+, and excellent performance in PvP. Although the pre-patch systems are very much not balanced around being level 50, it's unlikely that Windwalker's strength is going to change much in any content.
If the past is any indication, Windwalker should start out "decent" (ie.: slightly below average but still in the average range), but then fall behind as tiers progress and gear increases. This is due to very poor stat scaling which leads Windwalker to not gain as much from an increase in gear level as other stats. Without consistent rebalancing and buffs, history tells us that Windwalker will continue to fall behind other specs and classes.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Windwalker Monk?
Functionally there are a few small gameplay changes for Windwalker. One is that we press
instead of
at the same window of time. This does tend to come with a few more drawbacks than benefits. Pet AI is notoriously inconsistent, and although
's damage contribution wasn't great for scaling,
doesn't help much more, hurting Mastery and Stamina scaling, but helping Crit, Haste, and Agility scaling. It does also somewhat remove the need to stack all abilities into one small window as the "window" because the "window" for
doesn't exist until lv58
and is much longer. This lessens the burst capabilities of the spec, while keeping the damage profile similar.
The second change is that with the removal of the "Gale Burst" mechanic from
, you can largely use
when it suits you most, lined up with damage buffs, boss phases, or other similar things. Now that there's no damage window to use it in, you can be more flexible with how and when you use it to get the most value.
Like the other abilities that came off the GCD;
being removed from the GCD is a very nice change to the usability of this talent, making it worth considering for use in that talent tier.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Windwalker Monk in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Theoretically, everyone losing Corruption should harm Windwalkers less relative to the specs that relied on Corruption heavily. This
should
be a relative positive for Windwalkers.
Due to Windwalkers generally stacking Versatility Corruption, there will be a rather significant loss of passive survivability.

I was SO confused reading the article when you kept saying that the "Gale Burst" effect of ToD is gone, because the article links the old version of ToD rather than the new one and the Gale Burst effect is still there in the tooltip for that. Had to log in my Monk to understand it.
Not a big deal, but you could link the new ToD spell to make it clear:

Hi I just got a 2 handed weapon for a reward from the pre-patch world boss. I cannot see any info in this guide or others, apart from we are now able to use 2 handed weapon.. Does it make a difference in abilities and what enchant should I use now I have lost one. I personally think Force multiplier should be considered now if you end up with a 2 handed weapon. Would like more info added please on this topic.
