How to Play Fury Warriors in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Fury Warriors have a fast-paced playstyle which focuses on sustained damage rather than spikes of big burst. With only one Rage spending ability, the goal of the rotation is simple: generate enough rage to cast
and maintain
, although a multitude of different abilities will be used along the way. Because every other ability is a resource generator and has a short or no cooldown, Fury Warriors are always active, without any downtime spent waiting for something to do. This makes it highly engaging and proves that a specialization doesn't need to be complicated in order to be fun.
If you're just getting started as a brand new Fury Warrior, consider checking out the
Fury DPS Beginners Guide
, which will get you started on proper talents, azerite, essences, stats, gearing and more!
How Different Do Fury Warriors Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The core of Fury Warrior gameplay is relatively unchanged, although several new and redesigned talents add flavor to the otherwise familiar toolkit. Perhaps the biggest change from a cosmetic standpoint is the reintroduction of
, allowing Fury Warriors to once again dual-wield one-handed weapons, although several other utility spells have returned to the baseline toolkit.
New Abilities for Fury Warriors in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Although little has been added in the way of rotational attacks, the unpruning has returned several very useful utility and defensive abilities, shoring up one of the Warrior's greatest weaknesses and making it a much more adaptable class.
- Is an incredibly powerful addition to the toolkit; best case it offers complete spell immunity along with extra damage output, and at worst it's a nice magical damage reduction on a very short cooldown with no cost or GCD.
- Hurts Fury due to reducing Enrage uptime, but has great life-saving potential in certain situations, and can make the Warrior very tanky when combined with other defensive abilities.
- Adds a little bit more mobility back to the toolkit, which is a great advantage, although the defensive portion will rarely serve any important purpose.
- Creates the potential to wear a shield and serve as an impromptu tank, but rarely feels worth the effort due to crippling the specialization's damage output without any notable increase in survivability.
- Exists as a hypothetical filler when using a shield alongside
, but the practical reality is that you lose more than you gain, as the lack of rage generation makes it an inefficient use of the GCD.
- Adds some counterplay to PvP, although it probably won't see too much use in PvE due to the cast time and niche uses.
- Now serves as Fury's primary slow, with
acting as a stronger version on cooldown.
- Is now baseline for all specializations, although the rage cost makes it completely useless to Fury in its current state.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Fury Warriors in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Fury Warrior's
effect has always been capped at 4 additional targets, so target caps aren't exactly new to veteran Fury Warriors. For burst AoE abilities,
is limited to 8 targets, while
has no target cap.
All AoE Target Caps
How do the GCD Changes Affect Fury Warrior in Shadowlands?
Fury warrior only had one small change:
is now off the GCD. It will often still be used early in the pull in order to generate extra Rage with
.
How Strong are Fury Warriors in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Fury Warriors currently look very strong going into the Shadowlands Pre-Patch, benefiting from a ton of extra stat scaling and rage generation thanks to Azerite Traits, allowing it to use Rampage and maintain Enrage much more frequently. Strengths include very fast pace of gameplay and strong throughput damage which can easily swap between single and multitarget, while weaknesses include any amount of downtime spent off target and simply keeping up with the rotation!
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Fury Warriors?
The central gameplay remains unchanged, with
,
,
, and
all building rage in order to enable
. The Haste bonus from
has been reduced, which makes the specialization play a little slower than before, and
adds a new button to work into the rotation, but the focus remains on sustaining Rage generation and throughput damage.
Specialization Changes
haste speed bonus is reduced from 25 -> 15%
healing reduced from 5% -> 3%.
cost reduced from 85 -> 80 rage.
duration increased from 10 -> 12 sec.
temporary health increased from 15 -> 20%.
has been reintroduced (see below).
Talent Changes
,
,
, and
have been removed, while several talents have changed rows (see below).
no longer increases healing, but can trigger guaranteed Enrage.
now heals for 30% up from 20%.
also reduces the cooldown of Execute by 1.5 sec.
is no longer an attack, instead triggering on of Rampage casts.
is a new attack, only usable while enraged.
increases Bloodthirst's rage generation.
no longer modifies Rampage, but causes it to refund rage.
improves Raging Blow similar to Inner Rage.
now improves Whirlwind damage and cleaves more attacks.
has a slightly lower cooldown and now crits for triple damage (instead of double).
doubles the damage and adds a new effect to Bloodthirst (
) and Raging Blow (
) during Recklessness.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Fury Warriors in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The loss of Corruption hurts Fury less than some other specializations, as stacking Critical Strike didn't scale out of control with extra stats the way others did. The Azerite Trait,
, remains very powerful and the value of Critical Strike remains strong, even without the excess inflation.
Best Talent Builds for Fury Warriors in Pre-patch
With several new and rearranged talents, Fury Warriors have a lot to experiment with in the Shadowlands Pre-patch, with standout talents like
and
offering new options previously not seen. That said, some builds play out better in some forms of content than others, although there's still a certain amount of latitude with which to make personal decisions. Reference the table below to see builds for the general types of content, and check out the
Fury Warrior DPS Talents & Build Guide
for more information on new and redesigned talents.
In open world combat,
becomes the single most important talent for reliably proccing Enrage when moving from combat to combat, while also pairing very well with
for reliable opening damage. Between the two,
and a follow on Rampage, most groups of enemies can be dispatched very quickly.
is very useful due to the ability to tab between multiple targets in order to maintain Enrage, while
remains a powerful synergistic option alongside
, with either
or
depending on the expected number of targets. As always,
is an option when the stun is needed.
In single target, stacking Haste and damage multipliers will lead to the best results, although it's not entirely reliable on all encounters. Because
resets on new targets, it will sometimes be foregone on encounters with multiple targets, while
is a much burstier option so long as there aren't more than 8 targets.
Best Rotation for Fury Warriors in Pre-Patch
The basic rotation remains unchanged, with only the addition of
when talented, making it very familiar to returning players. Although there is some nuance depending on exactly which talents and Azerite traits you're using, this basic rotation will get you through the majority of content. For a more in-depth review with all the different options, check out the
Fury Warrior Rotation Guide
.
to maintain the buff when 2 or more targets are present.
when not Enraged or above 90 rage.
on cooldown or for burst DPS as needed.
during
, and between its cooldown.
while Enraged.
Best Stats for Fury Warriors in Pre-Patch
In the Shadowlands Pre-patch, Critical Strike will continue to be the go-to stat while using the Azerite Trait,
, with Haste generally coming in second due to the reduced amount now gained from
. Mastery continues to be a decent stat, although sidelined in favor of Versatility when using certain pieces of gear or a number of Essences which deal outside sources of damage, such as
and
.
Crit > ~35% Haste > Versatility* > Mastery > Haste > Versatility > Strength
* Geti'ikku and direct damage essence/corruptions push Versatility up to or above Mastery.
- Without Cold Steel, Crit is about equal to Versatility; in either case, Haste starts losing value at ~35%.
Best Azerite Traits for Fury Warriors in Pre-Patch
There are few changes in store for Azerite, so existing gear should be ready to go when the pre-patch goes live.
remains the best Fury-specific trait to stack, while
and
remain reliable bonuses. The Ny'alotha raid trait
is also useful, providing a flat amount of stats now that Corruption have been removed.
Best Essences for Fury Warriors in Pre-Patch
Essences also remain unchanged, allowing Fury Warriors to continue with what has worked for them so far. Due to the non-competitive nature of open-world content, virtually anything can be used as desired.

Best Azerite Traits for Fury Warriors in Pre-Patch
There are few changes in store for Azerite, so existing gear should be ready to go when the pre-patch goes live. Cold Steel, Hot Blood remains the best Trait to stack alongside anything that provides extra Critical Strike, while Unbridled Ferocity and Simmering Rage remain reliable bonuses. The only exception is the Ny'alotha raid trait Heart of Darkness, which loses all value once Corruptions are removed.
Reference to HoD losing value when corruptions are gone needs to be updated since that has been clarified by blizz.

Can I ask why is Meat Cleaver is not valued over Dragon Roar at the very least in M+ situations with so many adds stacked? is the 30 secs CD on Dragon Roar really that much better against maintaining a WW every 4 abilities (which you already do in your rotation) for maximum multi-target damage?

I assume at some point Slam will be removed or better yet, re-imagined. 20 Rage is too much to take away from building towards Rampage. Fury Warriors aren't famous for down time or having an excess of rage. I appreciate the overall momentum of giving our characters more to do though. So I definitely want to see the momentum continue towards more not less.

Fury / Prot here, I'm just having a lot of fun toying around Fury being able to quick swap a shield for a IgnorePain / Shield Block defensive. I made a macro that:
- Equips my Prot spec shield
- Casts Ignore Pain
- Casts Shield Block
- Casts Spell Reflection
Can do this in a couple, consecutive key presses with a first macro, given the fact of course that I have 90 Rage for it to work (60 IP, 30 SB) but Fury pretty much has a constant diarrhea of Rage so is rather easy to build it up and make a defensive choice instead of the usual Rampage.
Then with another macro in my spam button (again, after a couple, consecutive key presses) swaps back my other 2-hand so I can keep the shield a sec or two to pair the extra 10-12% armor with the Ignore Pain, Shield Block and Spell Reflection effects.
I'm going to experiment more with it but if I'm correct, this could represent a massive defensive addition to the Fury toolkit if used correctly. I could literally swap on a shield, get on a load of defensive CDs only available to Prot before and swap back to 2-handers in a few seconds with proper macro work, not a Glass Cannon anymore haha. Definitely not what a Mage/Priest would be expecting to happen if they go toe to toe with a Fury now so I'll see how it goes during the expansion.
Really love the idea of having more abilities to experiment with, having the illustion of freedom to create unique situations or even bad choices with our abilities, gear, stats should be integral part of the game.
