Introduction
Welcome to my Guide on How to Improve Your Arena Gameplay! I am Corkiy and I’ve been playing WoW since The Burning Crusade. I started to PvP in Warlords of Draenor and achieved multiple Rank 1 titles ever since. I’ve also competed in many tournaments.
I managed to get my first Rank 1 in my second season PvPing primarily because I followed some mandatory concepts which have helped me improve and reflect on my gameplay.
This guide will give you the information you need to improve your arena gameplay as fast as possible.
Requirements
To kick things off, let’s talk about the requirements you will need to improve and play on a competitive level.
If you already know which class you want to play and have some general knowledge about Arena, you can skip to the 'Finding Partners' section.
Finding the Right Class
Besides having a headset and a working keyboard, you will have to find a class and specialization that is fun for you to play.
Most of the time you can tell if a class is fun for you by just PvEing, but it’s important to note that PvP gameplay can be very different. I would not hesitate to try out different classes in Arena so you can get a feeling for what they are like before committing to one. Nonetheless; the better you get, the more fun you will have.
Don’t give up on one class just because you won’t instantly be high rated! I am mentioning this because there are a lot of players who constantly reroll to new classes and get stuck around the same rating because they seek instant gratification by playing what is the best in the current meta.
If you want long term success, you shouldn’t do that!
Quick Class Overview
Here is a quick overview on the playstyles of each class at high rating. Keep in mind that this playstyle may change, but as of right now it should give you a good idea of how each specialization plays.
I have also added a quick indicator, (+) and (-), for specializations that are really good in the current meta and for specializations that are especially bad right now. If there is no indicator, assume the specialization is average-performing.
Warrior
Arms Warrior
- Plays straightforward comps like Turbo (Enhancement Shaman/Arms Warrior) which has an aggressive playstyle. Generally, Arms is durable and provides sustain damage.
Fury Warrior
- Damage is based around burst and it also has a lot of self healing. This makes it more tanky than Arms but it has less sustained damage overall.
Paladin
Retribution Paladin
- Squishy, but it also has arguably the most burst damage in the game. Retribution provides a lot of utility with healing and dispelling.
(+)Holy Paladin
- Plays offensively with a lot of cooldowns but it suffers from low sustained healing. If you like fast paced games, this is the healer for you.
Hunter
(+)Survival Hunter
- A melee Hunter with a lot of sustained damage and great utility.
Beast Mastery Hunter
- Based around dealing damage with pets which creates a slow playstyle.
Marksmanship Hunter
- A mix between Survival and Beast Mastery. Marksmanship is a little bit more versatile than the other specs, but overall it lacks damage.
Rogue
(+)Assassination Rogue
- Has the highest sustained damage of the specs and high burst, but less CC than any other Rogue.
(-)Subtlety Rogue
- Low damage with decent crowd control and high mobility.
Outlaw Rogue
- Has the most crowd control of the Rogues along with decent damage and good utility.
Priest
Holy Priest
- Based around cooldowns and crowd control immunity with a low healing output.
(+)Shadow Priest
- Good sustained damage through damage over time spells with a lot of crowd control but low burst. Shadow Priests are very durable.
Discipline Priest
- Impressive healing and damage output with high mobility. Heals mostly by doing damage and shielding.
Death Knight
Unholy Death Knight
- Rots and disrupts the enemy team while doing AoE damage. Unholy excels at playing long games.
Frost Death Knight
- High burst but it’s squishier than Unholy and focuses primarily on single target damage.
Shaman
(+)Elemental Shaman
- A ranged specialization that has a lot of burst, utility, and support for their team.
(+)Restoration Shaman
- High sustained healing with cooldowns that allow it to play long games. Another very durable specialization.
(+)Enhancement Shaman
- A melee specialization with big burst, good utility, and decent survivability.
Mage
(+)Frost Mage
- Lots of crowd control and slows combined with great burst, however Frost suffers from low sustained damage.
Arcane Mage
- Great mobility with decent burst but low sustained damage.
(+)Fire Mage
- Biggest burst out of all specializations and great crowd control. Fire excels at fast games.
Warlock
Affliction Warlock
- High spread pressure with great burst from Drain Life. Affliction excels at long games.
(+)Destruction Warlock
- Big burst with decent utility. Destruction suffers from low sustained damage but has good crowd control.
Demonology Warlock
- Deals damage primarily through pets. Demonology has more crowd control than the other specs, but it’s quite squishy.
Monk
(+)Mistweaver Monk
- The healer with the most mobility and healing output. It is also the squishiest healer.
Windwalker Monk
- Huge mobility combined with lots of burst, but it is squishy.
Druid
(+)Balance Druid
- Rot damage combined with big burst, great mobility, and utility. Balance is very tanky.
Feral Druid
- Strong sustained damage with lots of control and mobility.
Restoration Druid
- The most versatile healer, and has the potential to control the game. Heals primarily with HoTs.
Demon Hunter
(+)Havoc
- The most mobility out of all the specializations, with great utility and high sustained damage. Havoc also has good survivability.
Getting Started
Now after you’ve found the right class, have a feeling for PvP and know your basic rotation, it’s time to actually start playing Arena.
By the way, if you have no experience at all, the best way to get used to PvP is by playing Battlegrounds or Skirmishes until you know all of your keybinds and spells. That way, you can learn how to handle other classes without spending too much time in unrated PvP.
Before you jump into 3v3 rated Arena I highly recommend to start playing 2v2 rated Arena. 2v2 is much slower paced, so it helps you understand other classes and game mechanics. You will realize how much damage each class can output and which cooldowns to look out for.
Finding Partners
To find partners there are many different options like the in-game group finder, the official WoW forums, or just looking in trade chat.
The best way in my opinion is to start out with the in-game tool if you have almost no experience. Once you have played with people from there for a while and got some experience, there is a ‘strat’ I use to meet new and good people. Take the rating you have and check the ladder for people that have around the same rating as you (+50 / -50 difference) and literally just log on in their server and send them a message that you would like to play with them sometime (with your BattleTag included!). This works especially well if you are not high rated because there will be a ton of people replying. The best part about it is that they will be BattleTag friends with you and you (mostly) won’t have the typical ‘tool behaviour’ where they leave after 3 losses.
Attitude
To be successful with partners it’s not all about playing well, it’s more importantly about having the right attitude. When starting PvP you should not expect instant success, because from my experience you have to play a huge amount of 3v3 games to really gain the muscle memory for each situation. Most likely you will have to grind for weeks, if not months, to even see a slight improvement. However, once you get across a certain threshold, it will click in your head and you will skyrocket in rating.
When you are playing at lower rating most people will blame each other for their losses.
Never blame anyone but yourself!
That is the biggest mistake players make. Players constantly blame everything under the sun except themselves for losses, which leads to them not improving. Don’t be one of those players! Instead, always call out your mistakes and go through the games after and think about what you could have done to prevent the loss. I know this is sometimes not easy due to people being mean or rude but try to ask them what you could have done better to help the team. Once players are asked such a question, the mindset of most players changes in a positive way which results in them acting completely differently.
Furthermore, sticking to the same partners is great and it can build friendships but a lot of people don’t have the drive to become better by working on themselves, so playing with different people will give you new perspectives on the game. Each player knows something that you don’t, so it can be beneficial if you play with as many people as possible.
Reviewing Gameplay
Obviously, you cannot go through a whole session of 3v3 Arena in your head, so recording your gameplay is a great way to improve really fast. After each session, you can go through 2 or 3 games and spot mistakes or things that went wrong in the game(s). Try to spot good things you or the opponent did so you can use those things to improve your own gameplay.
Further Information
Compared to other esports, 3v3 Arena does not really require a great reaction time. What it requires is information. You might laugh, but you can think of it like 3D Hearthstone. Once you have the muscle memory for all your keybinds, it is literally just a war of information since you will know what to do in every situation.
Playing frequently is a great way to gain information, but there are a lot of things that take way too long for you to find out on your own. Watching streams is probably the most efficient way to gather information. It is important to make sure that you watch the right streams. Here are some that are educational and focus on gameplay. Even if they don’t play your class, you can learn a lot from them:.
