What is Corruption?
Corruption is a new system of power progression which replaces Titanforging; instead of item level bonuses, they will now have a chance to be Corrupted by the Old Gods, represented by the purple-colored stat which adds both a positive effect and stacking negative attribute which incurs penalties at various thresholds. Although the negative effects can reach a point at which they become debilitating, carefully managing the bonuses and penalties allows for a great deal of customization and individual power gain.
Corrupted gear can be freely cleansed by MOTHER in order to remove both effects and revert them back into normal items. Corruption can also be added on non-corrupted items, by purchasing
Preserved Contaminants with MOTHER
. Corruption resistance can also be gained over time, both from new minor essences, and the legendary cloak
, allowing more corrupted effects to be worn. For more information on all potential Corruptions, see our
Corruption Overview Guide
.
Buying Corruptions with Echoes of Ny'alotha for Elemental Shaman
What Corruptions should I Buy from MOTHER on an Elemental Shaman?
Corruptions now can be
purchased from MOTHER
using
. Every few days, a new set of Corruptions will be accessible.
With that in mind, here is a list of the best corruptions to purchase from MOTHER on an Elemental Shaman.
-
- On bosses that are primarily a single target, this corruption will shine. It'll be worthwhile to have several pieces with this for bosses like Wrathion and Shad'har
-
- Even with the Hotfix nerf to this corruption applied as of May 26th, this will still be the next strongest single-target dps per point of corruption and getting many of these is a good idea.
-
- For pure AoE, this should be our go-to corruption to stack.
-
&
- Both of these are right behind the above listed corruptions in most situations, and have different corruption breakpoints. Having a piece or two with these corruptions to get you to just the right amount of corruption can be quite helpful when maximizing the amount of corruption you're using while not using too much
Best Elemental Shaman Corruption Bonuses
I'll preface this section by reminding everyone that you have almost no control over what corruption effects your receive. At the same time, the following suggestions are based on the best data available to us at this time and will be updated as the data we have is updated.
We have comparative simulations for each of the various Corruption affixes which can roll on gear, courtesy of SimulationCraft and Bloodmallet. While this overview should give you a good general idea of how each compare to one another, your specific character may see slightly different results based on how you are geared and what Corruptions are available to you; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
. When looking at corruption effects it is important not to look at the overall power of a given effect, but at how much power per corruption is gained while staying below your safe threshold. By using Top Gear, you can play with the Max Corruption bar, allowing you to maximize your damage based on your Corruption risk choices.
This is simply an overview and doesn't take into account the negative effects of stacking Corruption. While increasing Corruption will continually increase player power, it comes at the cost of serious side effects, which may be debilitating in some activities or encounters. Reference the Corruption Effect notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of these bonuses and deal with the detriments.
Please also note that when using more than one of the same corruption, even different tiers of the same corruption, the effect/benefit (damage, statistical gains, etc) stack while durations and proc rates remain unchanged. The only exception is
, unique to the Ny'alotha raid weapon
, which will proc independently when dual wielded.

Best Effects
- This is currently the second best effect, though the strength of the effect diminishes if there are multiple targets involved due to the debuff it places on its target.
- This is a very economic effect, and is currently the strongest effect per point of corruption.
- The best stat proc at the moment by a large margin, though it does pale in comparison to either of the above.
- If you can position yourself in melee to utilize this, the damage this provides can be quite strong.
Good Effects
Elemental Shaman will prioritize Critical Strike damage
, although increased haste
and increased critical strike
can be useful as well.
Bad Effects
- Elemental gets little relative use out of this sadly, because while there are a lot of rotational abilities we cast not many of them have cooldowns that are long enough to make this one good for us.
- Interesting, yet lackluster, providing an additional few seconds off cooldowns per proc.
- Currently has far more corruption relative to the damage it deals, and usually requires that you be in melee.
Best Effects
&
- These doesn't gain a benefit from AoE at all, but the current strength of these traits on single-target means that they compete with the passive stat increases above.
- If both you and the mobs are positioned well this can be very strong, but depending on how easy that is in the real world, the perceived value of this corruption will rise/fall.
- This is the strongest stat-based corruption for AoE.
Good Effects
The passive % stat increases provide the best damage per point of corruption in most multi-target scenarios right now. Elemental Shaman will prioritize increased critical strike
, although Critical Strike damage
and increased haste
can be useful as well. Individual mileage may vary here as all 3 are relatively close.
Bad Effects
- None of our rotational AoE abilities have cooldowns, making the use of this limited.
- Interesting, yet lackluster, providing an additional 3 or 5 seconds off cooldowns per proc.
Best Elemental Shaman Ny'alotha Weapons
Besides random corruption effects, weapons from the new Ny'alotha raid also have exclusive effects on them, which can be quite powerful. Similar to random corruption effects, if you obtain a weapon with a subpar effect, you can always cleanse it. As an Elemental Shaman, you can obtain weapons with the following effects:
always comes with
- The % of intellect you gain changes every time it procs, which happens ~2.5 times a minute. We expect that this will be strong, though we're not 100% certain how strong just yet.
always comes with
looks cool, and is reminiscent of some of the old stacking stat trinkets. However in practice it's tuned to be relatively weak, and if we use the weapon with this on it at all we'll likely just cleanse the corruption off of it.
Dealing with Negative Effects of Corruption
In addition to the bonuses, corrupted items also increase the Corrupted stat by varying amounts based on the tier of the effect. Corruption stat incurs penalties that the player must deal with, and while these effects start out rather benign, they quickly ramp up in both potency and impact, to the point where it can be very hard to deal with during a Dungeon or Raid encounter, and even become outright debilitating at the highest levels.
There are five effects unlocked at different total corruption levels:
- Unlocked with 1 Corruption
- Unlocked with 20 Corruption
- Unlocked with 40 Corruption
- Unlocked with 60 Corruption
- Unlocked with 80 Corruption

At Rank 6, the legendary Cloak
gains an on-use effect which will remove and immune all currently active negative corruption effects.
- Shaman can't remove this entirely, but with
we can for the most part ignore the snare. If you are snared, it shouldn't prevent you from moving out of life-threatening AoEs.
For
, this will be annoying for Elemental as we don't have a way of immediately making our way out of it and just have to move at normal speed or at most
speed. However, as a majority of our dps can be done on the move we should be able to move out of it without much of a loss.
- Since the Thing from Beyond disappears when stunned, having
saved for this can make it very simple to deal with. In a pinch, you can currently knock it back with
!
- With
and
available to us we shouldn't be proccing this in the first place, but if you do you'll need to use
and get out of those effects as soon as possible!
How Much Corruption Should an Elemental Shaman Take?
Currently the Elemental Shaman community is suggesting that you stick relatively low on corruption, below 40 Corruption so that you don't have to deal with
. As we get used to corruption it may be possible to deal with corruption as high as 79 so that you stick just under
which is there simply to kill you. As suggestions for dealing with the negative effects of corruption evolve, so will this section!
