Your guildies have invited you, recently levelled to 90, to join them in a LfR. How do you avoid the really stupid mistakes that can get you (or your
Looking for Raid
group) killed when you "don't have time" to research?
Firstly, before you go raiding, if you don't already have DBM, go to Curse.com or WowAce.com and download an add-on called Deadly Boss Mods (or similar). This will give you a sound and raid warnings right in the middle of the screen when he does certain abilities (you can also use "need to update addon" as an excuse to refresh on these notes too).
N.B. Throughout this article, "
RUN
"means stop casting,
watching TV
or chatting to your mates in gchat and RUN;
"
MOVE
" means move out of that purple/blue/yellow puddle on the ground that is rapidly killing your or annoying your healer (which is worse, as it means you may die again throughout the raid. Repeatedly.)
"STACK"
means stand as close as possible to the other DPS, (or if you are a gnome, under the Moonkin or bear)
"Drop Stacks"
means the debuff the boss/add gives you (below your raid buffs, top right on a vanilla UI) becomes more damaging over time. When it reaches a certain number, you need to do "something" to reduce or remove the debuff.
"CD"
= Cool Down. e.g. "My CR is on CD 'cos I used it on the nab DPS that failed to move from the sh*t on the ground"
"CR"
= Combat Resurrection. DKs and Warlocks have these as well as druids since WotLK, but a druid can glyph it to return to full health
"DR"
= Damage Reduction. Special abilities that help prevent incoming damage such as Rogues' Cloak of Shadows, Druid Barkskin etc.
"Hero"
= Warrior/Shaman/Mage Bloodlust/Heroism/
Time Warp
. 10 min CD so use when raid call for it, not when you fancy using it. Increases haste by 30% for 40 seconds, so handy for those long cast time spells.
"HS"
= Health Stone. If you have a warlock in your raid, ask them nicely to put down a
Soul Well
and then click on it. Use the stone to instantly restore 20% of your health (separate from a Potion).
"CC"
= Crowd Control. Mages: polymorph or ice; Druid: roots; Paladin: Repentance or Fist or ...etc
"MC'd"
= Mind Controlled. This means a player has been taken over by the boss and one of the raid needs to do something to free them (for example: on amber shaper phase 1, the MC'd tank needs to be taken down to 20% health; on Sha of Anger, MC'd players need to be taken down to 50% health to free them or CC'd until it wears off).
"Kite"
= run backwards whilst attempting to dps and not trip over/get stuck on stuff that you could
swear
wasn't there 15 seconds ago...
Background Notes
This article is NOT meant to be a guide for Normal or Heroic raids. It does not cover every tactic that should be played to avoid damage or speed up the kill in LfR, only the wipe-factor ones.
It's aimed at the newbie raider who, through lack of knowledge kills themself, others, or even wipes the raid for the lack of a simple piece of knowledge.
If you're the charitable sort of tank/raid lead, it's one-liners that can be copied & pasted into raid before the pull.

I really liked this guide.
I'm going to approve it right away but when I first clicked it, it took me a few moments to figure out what you meant by the title. In hindsight it is quite clear but I wonder if there might be a better title that you could use to grab peoples' attention. Give it some thought

I like this guide but too many obscure acronyms, especially for those only beginning to particpate in raids. For example, what is MC'ed? Common ones like DPS are fine but for many of us who aren't old hands at the game, many of these--and, frankly, most of the other guides by folks who are very expert--are incomprehensible. Knowing the lingo may be part of this culture but it can also be extremely annoying, if not arrogant to assume everyone knows what you mean. Clarity first is the golden rule of any meaningful communication.

As a player that is brand new to raiding, this guide is exactly what I was looking for! Everything else out there seems to assume you already know the basics. Finally something that doesn't make those assumptions.
Thank you!

Nice, clear, and useful guide.
You have mixed up the names of "Galleon" and "Garalon". Galleon is the world boss.

Fallen Protectors: Pass the mark to a rogue (cloak of shadows), mage (iceblock), hunter (deterrence) or w/e. No need to make He's tank take extra damage from the boss for 2 mins (armor debuff). And you have to make sure you don't pass it to Rook's tank, unless they way outgear LFR. Honestly doesn't matter much in LFR, but it's a bad habit to learn.
Norushen: ALL adds have priority over the boss. The little adds buff the boss's damage, including his raidwide aoe. Soak the orbs dropped by the big adds.
IJ: a good strat for LFR/Flex is actually to have everyone stack up in melee range for phase1, so all the mines are really easy for even the most noob tanks to pop, and so aoe heals can just overpower all the weak damage. Tanks should be able to get all 3 mines every time. (even easier if they taunt at 2, then when clear. Instead of waiting to do the first taunt at 3.)
Nazgrim: pets don't give rage in D stance.
More advanced details that don't belong in a guide this brief:
Things like cloak procs, starfall, and some other uncontrollable cleave doesn't give rage either. So you can safely dps banners or adds next to the boss.
If the boss is still at low rage when his ability CD is coming up, it's ok to refresh dots. (esp. esp. aff lock, since you can refresh all 3 with one ability, only generating one rage. Other classes with strong dots can get away with this, too, esp. if you have good gear, so you're getting more damage per rage.)
Thok: Try to kite boss up/down the middle of the room. He always fixates one of the 3 farthest people, so avoid double fixate by not being miles ahead of him if he's moving slow.
Garrosh: riders in phase2? You mean just left over from phase1 I guess?
Also doesn't say anything about empowered whirl, and doesn't explicitly say to interrupt MCs, just dps them.
This goes for all fights: people that actually want to learn how to be a bigger help to any LFR they're in can and should just watch or read guides to the normal-mode versions of the fights. Sometimes the "lfr strat" that everyone uses is significantly different from the normal mode strat, because one of the mechanics on LFR doesn't exist, or can be trivially healed through. e.g. on Garrosh, minions buff each other's health and damage by such a small % that it works to aoe down a pack of several. This doesn't work well even in flex, and in normal even a minion with 3 stacks is VERY dangerous.
Sometimes LFR is actually qualitatively different. e.g. thok transitions based on health% in LFR, so you should bloodlust for fire phase, because you have to get through the same health% in fire phase regardless of how fast you got there. Unlike other difficulties, where shortening the fight is the most helpful thing. (stacking lust with everyone's pre-pots, trinket procs, and CDs is MUCH more effective than at any other time, even execute range.)

Your definition of kite is incorrect. Kiting is intentionally slowing a target and leading it away from dps or generally keeping it busy until it needs to die. Usually done by frost mages or hunters, but most classes have some ways of kiting.
