Learn how to defeat the Legion Timewalking Mage Tower Challenge encounter, Archmage Xylem, as a Subtlety Rogue. In this guide, we'll cover optimal talents, consumables, and Subtlety Rogue specific tips for you to beat this solo challenge.
The Mage Tower Challenge is a returning feature, being first released during the Legion expansion. Due to its popularity, the challenge has been converted into a timewalking feature.

Subtlety Rogue Mage Tower Challenge Transmog Reward
Players who complete any of the Legion Timewalking Mage Tower Challenges available for their class will be rewarded with a recolor of the Tier 20 Mythic set, with the special glowing effects. As with all Mythic variants of the
raid sets, these feature additional glow effects when compared to the sets from lower difficulties.
The Mage Tower Challenge encounter for Subtlety is
Closing the Eye
. This challenge consists of two Phases with Intermissions in the first Phase that you must overcome in order to obtain your Challenge Appearance. The scenario is designed to test not only your ability to deal damage, but also your mastery of other aspects of your specialization including proper use of mobility cooldowns, kicks, healing and crowd control effects.
You will fight against

Eye of Eternity
zone. After bringing

Best Subtlety Rogue Gear for Mage Tower Challenge
The Timewalking version of the Mage Tower Challenge follows Timewalking gear rules. Your gear, trinkets and stats do matter, but all your gear is scaled down to a maximum item level of 50. In order to maintain a similar challenge throughout expansions. Many items and abilities have been deliberately disabled including
Covenants, Legendaries, and Azerite powers/gear
.
To avoid unnecessary farming of past expansion gear, this guide will be aimed at getting your Shadowlands character through the Mage Tower Challenge using mostly items available in the current Shadowlands expansion. Particularly powerful items from past expansions will be noted below, but shouldn't be necessary to complete the challenge though they may give you an additional edge. For Subtlety Rogues, you likely want to follow these stat priorities for your gear in order to to optimize for damage that will be valuable throughout the second phase of our Mage Tower Challenge,

A big focus should be in general on damage output. You have the option to change talents and gear between phase one and two if you prefer, but it shouldn't be necessary to use different gear sets for the challenge.
Best Subtlety Rogue Consumables and Enchants for Mage Tower Challenge
When it comes to Timewalking gear, you can enhance your gear in a multitude of different ways currently not available in Shadowlands. While these extra enhancements and enchants might give you a slight edge, they shouldn't be necessary to complete the challenge. As such, we'll mostly be looking at what Shadowlands consumables and enchants you can use to help your character in the challenge.

Subtlety Rogue Strategy & Walkthrough for Mage Tower Challenge
Below we'll provide a thorough breakdown of the Mage Tower challenge encounter detailing a step-by-step walkthrough of each stage or phase as well as notable enemies and abilities. We'll offer strategies for overcoming each obstacle though there's usually multiple ways of overcoming difficulties.
Stage 1: The Confrontation
After entering the challenge you start in the preparation phase in the
Eye of Eternity
zone.
will stand on the platform and start around 28 seconds long non skippable dialog if you get closer. You will want to apply poisons, consumables and go into
before the dialog ends and the encounter starts with a transition into stage two.
The end of this stage also makes the orb in the middle of the room glow and emit four static beams. The orb and the beams will stay up for the rest of the challenge and will deal damage to you if you run into them. You can run through the beams only if you have
up.
Stage 2: Gaining Power
The second stage/first phase of the fight alternates between Frost and Arcane phases. The fight will always start with the Frost phase.
You will fight
in this phase and your objective is to bring his hit points down to 10%.
There is an intermission phase between Frost and Arcane phases that will be further explained in the Intermission section.
Notable Abilities
Frost Phase:
- An interruptable cast that deals frost damage.

Both Phases:
- Will spawn numerous orbs that will move into the direction
is pointing and deal a lot of damage if they hit the player and hence should be avoided.

Frost Phase
The easiest way to play this phase is to interrupt

and move him close to the center of the crossing beams. This allows the use of

A key component to survive outside of
is to interrupt and crowd-control the Archmage.
The best way to do so is to use
close to the end of a

casts if you time this sequence well and allow yourself to do more damage to the Archmage.
If you reach the second frost phase be careful with
, positioning the Archmage to the middle can make it difficult to avoid the orbs.
Arcane Phase
The arcane phase is easier than the Frost phase because

are easy to deal with.

casts and allows you to bring your health pool up.
should be interrupted quickly, but It is usually not a big problem to not interrupt
immediately, especially if you are comfortable with keeping
interrupted else. it is not advised to never interrupt the cast.
Both Phase
Try to always stay close to
and keep casts interrupted. You can interrupt using

. If you use
make sure to wait for the interrupt to end before lining up another crowd control effect. Also don't hesitate to use
and wait for it to run out if you run low on health points.
Also use
or the teleport of
after using
to get to the Archmage quicker after he teleports away.
can be saved for the intermission phases usually.
Stay on the Mage during
if you feel comfortable doing so, if you struggle to avoid the orbs just stand somewhere outside of the effect and wait for it to end. The first part of the fight is not a damage race, which makes this less punishing.
should probably only be used as an emergency button. The arcane phase should not require the use of it, but the Frost phase can be if you are unlucky with teleports or run out of shadow steps.
Make sure to not use
further into the fight as you will need it for the Final Stage. It is no problem to delay the transition and maybe play another Intermission in order to get your cooldowns back up.
will transition in preparation phase after getting down to 10% health. This allows you to use
to change talents, poisons, and food to get your health points up or to change gear.
Stage 2: Intermission
The objective in this stage is to find the shimmering image of
. The intermission ends when touching the image and transitions to either a Frost or an Arcane phase.
Notable Enemies & Abilities
- A 40 second channel that deals massive amounts of damage if completed. The only way to interrupt it is to reach the shimmering Image of
.
You will constantly take ticking damage while in this phase
Mirror Image - Will constantly cast
. They drop a protective bubble that will protect you from the constant ticking damage and heal you if you stand inside but shrink over time.
Mirror Image:
- An interruptible spell that knocks you back if you stand close to the Mirror Image
will teleport to a random location and transform into a shimmering image. It is possible to see the location for a split second in the transition before the Mirror Images spawn.
A subtle sparkle effect is an additional hint to find his location as well as a marker on the minimap. The easiest way to get to his location is the use of
in combination with
.
will mitigate all ticking damage and slow effects and allow you to straight up go towards the image.
If you don't have

Final Stage: The Shadow Within
Your objective in the final phase is to kill
. It is important to play this phase efficiently to meat the damage check.
Notable Enemies & Abilities
- Will drop a void zone that slowly expands.
- is spawned from
and will run towards
. They heal him for 20% each if they reach him.

at your position when it expires. The Cast will extend the Void zone faster and the channel ends if all 3 adds are killed.
The Final Phase is a damage check. It is usually best to use your cooldowns, combat potions and drums at the start of the phase.
will drop a small void zone that slowly grows. The void zone applies a slow effect and does damage makes it best to stay on the edge of the zone while slowly moving the boss in order to maximize the room on the platform. When the boss starts casting

does a lot of damage now and it is advised to try to have it ready when adds spawn. You should have a maximum of four add phases if played correctly. If you run out of space earlier try to move only the minimum amount to be outside of the expanding void zone and spawn the adds slightly closer to the boss to maximize uptime.

if this is the case to survive while lowering its remaining health. You can use
at the very end of the fight if you run out of space to win some additional seconds. The boss becomes cc immune when enraged.

Completed sub rogue one without changing any SL gear out but I did use BFA flasks and potion

for a while I was able to use the interrupt and shadowstep strat but after those hotfixes to respawn location the majority of the time Shadowstep is no longer in range.

I can get to the shadow within every time but I cannot kill the adds that he spawns in time with enough DPS to beat the DPS race. Any tips? Do I need to farm the ToT and SoO to get good enough gear?

Did it tonight in 5 attempts in 10.07 DF. I had done it originally back in legion era so was somewhat familiar but still rusty. First attempt I got him to P2 rather easy but fumbled my spec swap to tornado loadout and no crippling. 2nd attempt should have been a kill but at 8% he spawned seeds and I sat there and went "hey let me just hard burn boss before the adds boost his damage" not remembering they actually heal him. DPS was kind of tight. I had literally 3-5 yards of space left when he died. Shuriken tornado makes quick work of adds and its slow + crippling is a must have. You can use a whetstone too if you want extra help but tornado should be up every add set if you need more then 2 you probably gonna die.
I used 100% DF gear, only non current era was consumes unbridled fury pot, legion augment rune, and cheaper drums(SL). You don't really need to re gem or re gear enchant IMO unless you are struggling big time. in P2 adds i suggest single target burning the adds one by one. Either use the tornado CP generated straight into a evisc or use the first set into a kidney -> evisc -> evisc and then storm into more evisc if needed. Trying to black powder them down is MUCH slower.

I just completed this with a fresh 70. Farmed enough dreamsurges to convert 4 tier pieces, everything else was leveling blues and greens. I also grabbed Ravaged Seed Pod though I don't think it actually did much damage or healing but my other trinkets were pretty bad. On the actual kill I only did 2.4k dps overall (and it took me about 20 tries). I think people with actual rogue knowledge will be able to complete it much quicker than the 8 minutes it took me.
I used the following talents:

Part 2 - BUQAAWulQAmRd/c4Iy2r7VOUFAAAAAAAAAAAhgkkICBIRSSikkEJSSECJtAJlIkkEpEAAAA
Very similar to the guide, but I had trouble switching between them during the small intermission because it always said that Shadowstep was on cooldown, so I ended up tweaking it so both talent sets had 2 charges of Shadowstep, even though you don't really use it in part 2.
I mostly just followed the guide above, but here is my take on it:
Interrupt Xylem and drag him close to the middle, I was always in range to directly shadowstep to him during the Razor Ice.
During the arcane intermission, kill the closest mage and stand in the shield while you figure out where Xylem went via the minimap
Shadowstep and kill a mage closer to the real Xylem, stand in shield to heal and figure out where to go next. You have plenty of time to reach him.
After that avoid orbs and just save Kick for the Draw Power interrupt
For the Razor Ice in this stage, I used either Cloak (and ran through them) or Shadowstepped to an outer ice (then walked backwards out of the danger zone)
Rinse and repeat until he hits 10%
During the RP, apply crippling poison and quickly change talents, then run to the boss spawn point (you don't have much time)
In this phase, keep the boss in the middle for as long as possible to maximize the goop free zone you have.
Slowly back away to the edge of the platform as the goop expands
When the adds are spawning, run as far away as possible (use sprint if you can), and then use Shuriken Tornado, Black Powder, and whatever else you can to kill them before they go into the goop
When they are dead, run back to the nearest edge of the goop to the boss and start slowly kiting around the edge again
At some point near the end of the fight the boss seems to enrage and do a ton of extra damage (maybe I was too slow?). I used all defensives, any pots/drums whatever to squeeze out that last bit of dps for the kill
And that's it. Keep trying, and good luck!
