What is the Shadow Priest Mage Tower Challenge? - Thwarting The Twins
The Mage Tower Challenge encounter for Shadow Priests is Thwarting The Twins. In order to obtain your Challenge Appearance, you must defeat the Magespear brothers on a floating island in The Nether. This challenge consists of 2 main bosses that alternate for 5 phases. The scenario is designed to test not only your ability to DPS, but also your mastery of your specialisation's entire toolkit including damage and utility usage.

. The most important thing about this fight is to kite or control adds whilst preventing

Best Shadow Priest Gear for Mage Tower Challenge
The TImewalking version of the Mage Tower Challenge follows Timewalking gear rules. Your gear, trinkets and stats do matter, but all your gear is scaled down to a maximum item level of 50. In order to maintain a similar challenge throughout expansions. many items and abilities have been deliberately disabled including
Covenants, Legendaries, and Azerite powers/gear
.
To avoid unnecessary farming of past expansion gear, this guide will be aimed at getting your Shadowlands character through the Mage Tower Challenge using mostly items readily available in the current Shadowlands expansion. Particularly powerful items from past expansions will be noted below but shouldn't be necessary to complete the challenge though they may give you an additional edge. Best Shadow Priest Stat Priority for Mage Tower Challenge
As a DPS class, you want to prioritize the best stats for damage for Thwarting The Twins. You may find you want a little more Versatility to tank hits and survive the encounter, but should generally aim for the same stat priority as you would for any other PvE content.
intellect > Haste > Mastery > Critical Strike > Versatility
Best Shadow Priest Consumables and Enchants for Mage Tower Challenge
When it comes to Timewalking gear, you can enhance your gear in a multitude of different ways not currently available in Shadowlands. While these extra enhancements and enchants might give you a slight edge, they shouldn't be necessary to complete the challenge. As such, we'll mostly be looking at what Shadowlands consumables and enchants you can use to help your character in the challenge.

Best Shadow Priest Talents for Mage Tower Challenge
The talents recommended here focus having as much priority damage as possible every 30 seconds to burst down hands, as well as Single Target for Raest and Mobility / Control to be able to kite Karam.

Shadow Priest Strategy & Walkthrough for Mage Tower Challenge
Below we'll provide a thorough breakdown of the Mage Tower challenge encounter detailing step-by-step walkthroughs of each stage or phase for both common strategies, as well as notable enemies and abilities. We'll offer strategies for overcoming each obstacle though there's usually multiple ways of overcoming difficulties.
The encounter has two bosses that alternate which one is active each phase, this happens twice with a new mechanic being added each time. After each boss has been fought twice separately, they will both engage you at once making five phases total.
Burn Strategy
The Burn Strategy revolves around playing the fight in a similar way to legion. Your goal is to deal as much damage as possible to

in his two burn phases, then bringing it home in the final phase before the mechanics become overwhelming.
Phase 1
You will begin by kiting
卡兰姆·法师之矛
. Do not let him hit you;
升龙
will take you to very low health or even one-shot you. It's best to kite him in large circles. Always stay further than 10 yards from him even if it means interrupting casts.
Karam gains a stacking movement speed buff, so you may need to burn at least
虚空形态
to nuke him down before this becomes too much for you to handle, but this is a last resort. Keep up your standard Single Target rotation, making sure to use every
虚空箭
and
噬灵疫病
to gain as much distance as possible. As Karam gets closer,
虚空触须
or
心灵尖啸
him to buy a few extra seconds to either push him to 33% or run away.
Phase 2
Phase 2 begins when Karam reaches 33% health. He will go immune and start healing back to full, while

starts to attack you. Do not
沉默
his

; doing so will cause him to move, and it's useful to keep him in the centre of the arena.
Raest will summon packs of one large
阴影魔
and several small
暗影残迹
s which do nothing except move towards you. Like Karam, they will almost one-shot you if they get too close. You can use
暗影冲撞
on them and rot them down with a combination of DoTs and
心智联结
.
Any cooldowns you managed to hold from phase 1 should be used here to burst Raest as hard as possible. Try to position so that Raest is between you and the add spawn locations, this means you can continue hitting Raest and just dot up with adds with
暗影冲撞
as they come through.
Getting a clean burn, with all your cooldowns timed and used correctly, is key to being able to execute this strategy.
After roughly 40 seconds in this phase, Raest will go immune again and the fight will move into phase 3.
Phase 3
Karam begins chasing you again. Raest no longer summons small adds, although the existing ones don’t despawn and will continue to attack you until you finish them off.
A new mechanic in this phase is the
异世之手
, which is a priority target. As soon as it spawns you must switch and focus it down to prevent it from casting multiple
异世之握
s and overwhelming you. You have three options as a Shadow Priest for dealing with these, interrupting them with
沉默
, killing them before their first cast like
this
, or tanking their cast with
消散
/
绝望祷言
. Whichever way you choose you will still have to kill them before their second cast.
Continue whittling down and kiting Karam, whilst dealing with hands until Karam again reaches 33%, triggering phase 4. You should aim to extend phase 3 as long as possible to wait for your cooldowns to come back.
Phase 4
Karam goes immune again and Raest again begins to attack you, whilst summoning
暗影残迹
s and
阴影魔
s. Hand From Beyond is not active in this phase. However, Raest will place purple runes on the ground (
召唤符文
). You must stand in this rune and soak it until it disappears, otherwise a
梦魇之物
will spawn kill you. Shadow has no special tricks to handle any of the mechanics in this phase, just continue to dps down Raest and deal with adds as and when to prevent being overrun.
The location of each
召唤符文
is not entirely random. There are only a few fixed locations a rune can spawn, and all of them are within the same general area of the room. Avoid kiting
暗影残迹
s and
阴影魔
s there and you should not find them in your way when it comes time to soak.
In this phase, any 2 minute or shorter cooldowns will be available again. Use them together here to push Raest as low as possible before the final phase begins.
Note:
If your combat potion of choice has a 60 second duration, this is the best time to use it as you will get value from the full 60 seconds.
Attack Raest, kite adds and stamp on runes until Karam heals up and becomes attackable once more, starting the final phase. You are looking to have Raest around 35% by this point in the fight, but at least under 40% to be able to finish him before you get overrun in the final phase.
Phase 5
Karam spawns one final time, but Raest is also active. This means that you will simultaneously be dealing with Karam, Raest, the small
暗影残迹
and
阴影魔
adds, Hand From Beyond, and Rune of Summoning.
Soaking the Rune of Summoning is your priority, with Hand From Beyond a close second. Your cooldowns will start coming back around the time of the first soak and you should play them aggressively into Raest to finish him as soon as possible.
Whilst Karam is active in this phase, and the hand spawns are tied to him, you should avoid damaging him and simply kite him around the room. This is because if Karam dies, Raest gains a 400% buff to the damage of his
暗影箭
s and will quickly finish you off if you are not prepared.
Raest has a lot of HP, and this phase will get very dangerous towards the end. Keep to your priority of Runes > Hands > Raest. If Raest is very low, you can opt to ignore hands and either survive them with defensive cds (either
绝望祷言
or
消散
) or interrupt them with
沉默
and continue dpsing Raest. After Raest reaches 0% HP the encounter will end, you do not have to kill Karam. You may also opt not to soak a rune if the boss is very close to dying, as they have a fairly long timer before they will spawn their add.
While the goal is to have Raest low enough you have to handle as few mechanics as possible in the final phase, your gear and proficiency with Shadow will be a deciding factor in how much of the phase you've got to play. Here is a full breakdown of every mechanic that will happen in the final phase.

Additional Tips
Stick to the priority of Runes > Hands > Raest, but don't let the fiends overrun you.

can be used in a pinch to delay adds and Karam from reaching you in case you need to soak a rune.
Playing the fight like this will come down to the wire in the later stages, and benefits greatly from additional gear or consumables from previous expansions. Despite that, it is still doable with nothing but Shadowlands items and good play. If you find yourself consistently falling behind in Phase 5 then you may instead opt to play the alternative strategy below.
Karam Strategy
Previously known as the Slow Strategy, this is somewhat less risk averse strategy than burning down
莱斯特·法师之矛
in the final phase. As of December 16th,
莱斯特·法师之矛
can no longer be outranged, and has had his damage dealt during his enrage reduced slightly. This now makes it possible to still kill Karam, but instead of outranging
莱斯特·法师之矛
you must kill him before he kills you.
Phase 1
You will begin by kiting
卡兰姆·法师之矛
. Do not let him hit you;

, and any on use trinkets you have in this phase. Ignore the adds completely during this phase, as you have little to no intention of killing any of them for the remainder of the encounter.
After roughly 35 seconds, Raest will become immune again, triggering phase 3. Be sure to get both

s off during phase 2, as you will need as much damage as possible.
Phase 3
Karam begins chasing you again. Raest no longer summons small adds, although the existing ones don’t despawn and will continue to attack you until you finish them off.
The new mechanic in this phase is the

Phase 4
Like phase 2, Raest will become active and begin spawning adds. However, Raest will also cast

, placing a large summoning circle on the ground which needs to be soaked.
Begin the phase by positioning towards the back of the room and dpsing Raest with the same cooldowns that were used in phase 2. After roughly 15 seconds, Raest will spawn a
召唤符文
somewhere in the highlighted region below. This is the only rune that will spawn in this phase. After roughly 35 seconds, Karam will become active for the final time and Phase 5 will begin.
Phase 5
In Phase 5, both Karam and Raest will be active, and you will have to deal with both
异世之手
and
召唤符文
. This phase is very hectic for the burn strategy, but more forgiving mechanically if you kill of Karam fast enough.
Stage 1:
Begin the phase by using
野性皮革战鼓
, Combat Potion, and
暗影魔
on Karam to deal with him as quickly as possible. Your goal is to kill him before the second
异世之手
is able to cast. Swap to the first hand as it spawns, soak runes, and position yourself pre-emptively towards the back of the room to avoid covering the rune spawn area with pools. As Karam gets low, start moving back towards the entrance to prepare yourself for stage 2.
From this point on, no more
异世之手
will spawn, and any currently active hands will despawn.
Stage 2:
Upon witnessing his brother's demise, Raest will enrage. This enrage increases his damage by 400%, and causing his
暗影箭
to deal roughly 1500 damage per cast. As you can no longer run out of his cast range, you will have to use your remaining resources to kill him before he can kill you. You will still get
召唤符文
, so make sure to position to keep adds away from the rune spawn locations. Cast
快速治疗
and kite adds to keep yourself alive whilst doing any damage you can to Raest, be careful not to waste mana here as you'll likely need all of it.
When your
虚空爆发
and
能量灌注
come back, use them alongside
吸血鬼的拥抱
and your on use trinket to deal high damage whilst keeping yourself topped. Do this after you've exhausted your mana bar, so you can recover it without needing to spend any.
Once
吸血鬼的拥抱
ends, return to whittling down Raest between well timed

s and save

for the next time you run out of mana. You cannot last forever in this phase, but with proper use of your resources you can do at least 50% of Raest's hp.
Once Raest is defeated, the encounter ends and all remaining adds despawn.

I have completed this as a priest alt a couple of minutes ago, after ~150 tries I reckon, if not more. I'm still shaking: this is so far the hardest challenge I've done (for reference, that's all dps challenges across Sub (main), BM, Fire, Demo and this). The video makes both strategies seem way too easy.
A main priest with Ocular and Ruby, socketed SL gear from the s2 sockets, and years of practice. I appreciate the input, but it's not the same for most. I've played this character as first-alt in a couple of patches, across Disc and Shadow depending on what alt raids needed role-wise; I actually do know the spec quite well as I think it's one of the more enjoyable and difficult dps specs in the game, but was not at all geared when I attempted this (no M+ or Sanctum gear). EDIT: Ellipsis replied to this and added more elaborate phase 5 breakdowns and a non-consumable kill to the guide, which gives a better depiction of phase 5. Awesome to do so.
I'll give a quick recap of what I've tried and what I ended up using on the kill. In short, I did use the
burst
strategy, as I felt like any strategy involving control was
way too slow
to a point that either one, Karem slams you into oblivion or two, Raest raests you after going berserk if you decide to avoid one by killing Karem. On the latter, you'll spend half your GCDs on Shadow Mend and you have zero room for error. After being in it for five minutes, scraping by with fast heals is way too stressing.
Prep
Talents:
1113132
as per guide. Searing Nightmare, Shadow Crash and StM are baits. You can make it with those, but there's no reason to. Only Unfurling + Misery might be a good alternative due to limited Mind usage, but for me it just complicated VT usage and ToP is too good: it activates just before the burst windows because Karem is <35% and it helps with the peel at the end.
Gear
:

(Dauntless) with crit, by lack of better. Ruby & Ocular are BiS and much better. Rest of the gear was optimized yet sub-optimal: used the Garrosh staff with Celestial Guidance, a couple of Dreadful with +7 crit gems, Prydaz with +6 int and Insignia of the Grand Army with +7 int.
Consumables
: Flask of Power, Drums, Potion of Unbridled Fury, War-Scroll of Intellect, Rune, and a health pot. Really do not give up on any single use enhancements on this challenge.
Prepull I'd stand on the back left, popping all consumables, Shadowform and Fort. Immediately after activating throw a VT.
Fight
Honestly, the fight execution was almost identical to the video, but I was simply not getting the same numbers, and I blame the trinkets the most. Raest was at best on 60% after phase 2, and phase 4 was incredibly messy just because it's overwhelming enough to have so many adds up and dealing with runes. I had him at about 35% when Karem activated again (so ToP range).
Phase 5 deserves a mention, as it's tempting to just wanting to nuke Raest. I ended up
killing two Hands and soaking two Runes
, with Raest on ~20% when the second Hand spawned and ~15% when the rune disappeared: yes, I did just 5% damage in between those two mechanics. The third Hand is survivable (at least two casts), the Thing really isn't.
After that I just went to town to nuke him, Disperse & Prayer the Hand that spawned and ignoring the rune entirely: at this point it doesn't really matter what would happen first, the Hands going off, the Thing eating you alive or Karem one-shotting you, as the latter is unavoidable shortly after this part. I think the third Hand actually went off pretty much on the kill tick, but due to a full Shield I survived at ~5% when Raest did his very short end RP and the achievement popped.
Tl;dr: this is incredibly tough and you really do need to understand Shadow which I kind of do, but not as main. EDIT: Ellipsis replied to this and added more elaborate phase 5 breakdowns to the guide, which is awesome.
Character, transmogged but still with some challenge gear equipped as I noped out after getting it.

I beat this after 135 attempts. Burning Raest down was too stressful with everything going on so I decided to kill Karam first and deal with the enrage. This was adapted from
https://www.reddit.com/r/wow/comments/rn9wym/guide_shadow_priest_mage_tower_915/
but the idea is to tank the enraged shadow bolts by timing Shadow Mend properly to prevent going oom too quickly. I think it only took 5 or so attempts to beat this after swapping strategies to getting Karam down ASAP.
Quick references:
I ended P2 with Raest at around 76%
I ended P4 with Raest at around 63% - so I had a lot of health to deal with after Karam started chasing again
Talents were 1133132 - notably Searing Nightmare because this strat works with killing adds
Trinkets were

Phase 1/2:
I kited Karam around back to where he first started since the adds usually spawn on opposite side which gives you a good amount of time to unload everything before having to move. This is the only real burst phase for Raest; basically followed the normal burst rotation to try and get him down as much as possible. Try to stay around where Karam is so you can drag Karam and the adds together in phase 3.
Phase 3:
DoT up Karam and get as much dps in as you can before the hand appears and start heading towards the far side of the room where the hand will spawn. At this point I dot up the hand and if I can fit a mind blast then that helps. Otherwise Karam should be on top of the adds right now and I just focus Searing Nightmare on him to get the adds down and cleave the adds and the hand together. Interrupt the hand and kill it just by Searing Nightmare cleaving off Karam. I save enough insanity for the second hand where I cast Psychic Horror on Karam and then swap to the hand with VT+SWP+Mind Blast+VT and SWD if I need to. It's pretty important to save dispersion here because we won't be focusing hands much in phase 5. Timing is important here. Try to get Karam down to about 37-38% but not too low by the time the third hand comes up. Focus the third hand down and the dots should get Karam down to 33 phasing the encounter.
Phase 4:
This is where things change a bit. I don't focus Raest much here and don't pop any cooldowns besides a quick VT at the beginning. Hold PI and Void Eruption until Phase 5. Just dot Raest up and Searing Nightmare off him to kill the adds. Make sure to drag the adds away from the start location where the runes spawn.
Phase 5:
I think removing the hand mechanic helps a lot. Of course this means you have to deal with enraged Shadowbolts but it's manageable even with Raest at >60%. Keep dots on Raest but once Karam becomes active, pop potion, PI, VT, Shadowfiend (onto Karam and not Raest), and then Void Eruption and burst down Karam while dealing with the first hand and runes. Ignore the second hand and keep burning down Karam. I needed to use dispersion to soak the second hand's cast but he should die before it finishes its recast which is not too much of a dps check to do. At this point any hands still up will despawn and there are only wandering adds and runes to deal with. Make sure to keep the area where the runes spawn clean. Then it's a matter of paying attention to your health and healing when necessary and dealing with runes. It is important to kill the adds here as you slowly dps down Raest to utilize the Discerning Eye of the Beast trinket so you have enough mana to sustain your Shadow Mends. Don't PW:S unless you need it for the speed boost as it eats away at your mana and you really want to prioritize Shadow Mend healing with mana here. So Searing Nightmare occasionally so the adds die at a consistent rate. Use Desperate Prayer and Dispersion cooldowns when needed. I used Vampiric Embrace twice, following Void Eruption cooldowns but you should have enough mana to sustain healing between cooldowns. It was a little stressful up to the point where Vampiric Embrace came back up and then I knew I was going to win. I saved Drums for this last part after Karam dies.

I just did this in 10.0.5. After spending 10 hours beating my head against the Frost Mage one, Shadow Priest only took 6 hours total. Probably 30 pulls plus prep. It seemed the easiest class to do the Twins.

Since I didn't know how to play shadow priest very well, it helped to carefully plan the spells.
Before fight
: Power Word: Fortitude, Shadowform.
Phase 1 (Karim only)
: No cooldowns. Start with Vampiric Touch then just Mind Flay. Shield yourself and run when he gets too close then turn around and Mind flay again. If you proc a tendril it will be over soon. If not use Devouring Plague when it is up and keep Mind Flay.
Phase 2 (Raest only)
: Vampiric Touch, Void Torrent, then Shadow Crash on the first set of adds. Keep doing Void Torrent and use Devouring Plague when it is up. Use shield to run fast and kite the adds in a circle. End up far away from Karim when the 3rd set of adds spawn and do a Shadow Crash on them (getting the second set too if you can).
Phase 3 (Karim + Hand)
: Vampiric Touch, Mind Flay, Devouring Plague on Karim just like normal. When the hand spawns Vampiric Touch it then Void Torrent. Use Silence if it will get a cast off. You should only get 1 hand.
Phase 4 (Raest + Puddle)
: Same as Phase 2. Shadow Crash the 1st and 3rd set of adds. When the puddle spawns shield and run to it. If there are adds nearby use Psychic Scream.
Phase 5 (Everything)
: Just before this starts (as the 3rd set of adds spawn) pop everything. Void Eruption, Power Infusion, Shadowfiend, Draenic Intellect Potion, Drums of Fury. Try to be far from Karim and go hard on him using the same rotation as Phase 1 and 3. When the hand spawns do the same as Phase 3, Vampiric Touch then Void Torrent. You will kill Karim before a second hand spawns.
Phase 6 (Enraged Raest + Puddle)
: Use Mindgames and Power Word: Shield on CD. Use Shadowcrash on CD for the adds that are closest to you. Use Vampiric Embrace when you get low. Try to use shield more than heal since it has no cast time. Spend all your cast time doing Mind Flay. Keep calm and carry on.

No super gear, no flasks, enchants or drums etc. And really crap trinkets.
I killed Karam in Phase 5 after the 2nd Hand while Raest still has 50% life. It's easy doable. Just shield yourself, heal, vampiric touch, Draenei Gift of Naaru etc. and every dmg CD is ready. Only killing adds when shadow crush is ready. Dispersion only when I go to the rune and adds are in the way. After all its a lot of positioning luck with the stupid adds. You can even ignore the rune at 10% and burst Raest, psychic sceam/Void tentacle the Thing from Beyond, also helpful with adds/Karam if they are too close esp. when standing on the rune.

Some of the class talent choices seem a little odd. I don't think Mind Control or Mass Dispel would be used at all from what the strategies describe, and I'm certain that Leap of Faith and Twins of the Sun Priestess aren't useful given that this is a solo challenge. In terms of better choices for those talent points, Apathy seems like an easy win (some free slows help with kiting), and there are a few other nodes with at least marginal survivability gains for the other three points (Spell Warding, Void Shield, and a second point in Light's Inspiration seem like good choices especially if you're doing the strategy where you try to beat the enrage).
