Welcome to Wowhead's guide listing great mods that are known to work in the upcoming Shadowlands Pre-Patch and Shadowlands Beta. These 15 addons have been chosen from among the most popular and useful WoW mods. 11 have been specifically updated for Shadowlands Pre-Patch 9.0.1 and have been tested as working well on the PTR. The other 4 have not been upgraded specifically, but one has two Shadowlands/PTR-specific addons, and the others are offered to fill in a few holes. All four have been tested on the PTR and seem to be working normally.
This isn't to say your favorite mods haven't been updated, or that mod writers aren't currently working on updates. Nor do all mods break as the result of patch changes. With every major patch or expansion, there's a period of catch-up for addons where many of your favorites won't work. These may already be in your list, or may provide some alternatives to try in the meantime.
This guide also shows you how to check for updated versions of your favorite mods, either manually or by using an addon manager.
One important request: If you can afford to do so, please consider donating to support your favorite addon authors. They add hours of enjoyment to your gaming experience and deserve your support in return.
Finding Pre-Release Versions of Addons
Addon files come in three flavors:
Release, Alpha,
and
Beta
.
The
Release
(aka Stable) version of an addon is the one that is known to work well with the currently released version of the game. Addon managers download Release versions by default, unless you've set the manager to do something different.
Alpha
and
Beta
versions are where an addon writer presents upgrades, new features, or new versions for upcoming patches or releases, so these can be tested in PTR/beta environments. These may not be entirely stable, but at least are designed to work in the intended environment.
Repositories such as Curseforge will often have a way to sort by game version when looking at addons. This doesn't always give a complete picture, since not all addon authors post their most recent versions to that repository, and even some addons with alpha/beta files for the desired version don't show up properly.
With both a patch PTR and a Shadowlands beta, addon writers have been busy producing alpha and beta versions that will be compatible with the upcoming 9.0.1 and 9.0.2 releases. These will turn to Release versions once the pre-patch (and then Shadowlands) goes live. If you go to a repository such as Curseforge, you will find a link to Files that will show you a list of recent release versions of the game. If you want to see if there are any alpha/beta versions available, you will need to click "View All" to see all available versions of the files, and then download any alpha or beta files you want from there.
If you use an addon manager, you can usually set individual addons or even entire channels to download Alpha or Beta versions instead of Release versions. For those playing on the PTR or beta, this can shortcut the tedium of locating and downloading these pre-release versions.
If you can't find a compatible version of your favorite addon yet, check the addon's website. There may be additional instructions there about how to find alpha or beta copies of addons. For example, the authors of the Weak Auras 2 explains that they put addon beta versions on Github.
Back Up Your WTF Folder
Before playing with mod versions, back up your WTF settings folder inside your WoW/_client_ folder. If you need to roll back to a previous (stable) version, you may lose your settings if you don't take this step first.
Great Addons for Shadowlands Pre-Patch and Shadowlands Beta
Release versions will download with an addon manager without a need to reset the addon's download preferences. Alpha or Beta versions are linked where possible; this will also tell what version to tell your addon manager to use for the time being at least.
I have downloaded and tested all these addons in the compatible versions on the PTR and can confirm they are acting as intended.
ArkInventory
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version*
*From Version 3.09.31 onward; Twitch Client has been inconsistent on picking up this update, so you may need to check this manually.
ArkInventory is a customizable all-in-one bag manager with rule sets you can apply to custom sort inventory to your liking. While the core ArkInventory is fully upgradeable, I have not tested individual rule sets to determine whether all plugins are working.
Azeroth Auto Pilot
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
For those who want to move through leveling content as quickly as possible, Azeroth Auto Pilot is your guide to speed leveling success. With features to automate features such as quest turn-ins and guidance on what quest lines to follow and what to skip, you'll be flying through content at record speed.
Bagnon
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
Bagnon is a customizable bag manager that shows your bags, bank, vault, and guild bank as a single bag. No more digging through multiple bags to find what you're looking for. There are several plugins available for Bagnon, but these have not been tested.
Bartender4
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
Bartender4 is an action bar mod, supporting up to 10 action bars. With the addition of more spells and abilities with class unpruning, bar mods may be one of the most useful mods to experiment with given the upcoming class changes.
Bigwigs
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version;
Alpha version
for Beta
Bigwigs' popular BossMods works fine in current release in pre-patch; those wishing for it in Beta need to use the latest Alpha version as linked above.
Deadly Boss Mods
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
Deadly Boss Mods is a must-have for dungeoneers and raiders, as well as for special events and the Brawler's Guild. If you only ever download one mod, this is the one to get.
Dominos
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
Dominos is an action bar mod that lets you customize settings for up to 10 action bars. Given the "unpruning" of abilities all classes have gone under, this may be the perfect mod if you're finding yourself cramped for room to have all your available action buttons sorted and handy.
Details! Damage Meters Shadowlands
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Beta Version
While it isn't the only choice for damage meters, it's the most accurate, with a low footprint that won't take up much screen real estate or framerate cycles.
ElvUI
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Beta Version
ElvUI is one of the most universally loved UI replacements on WoW -- so much so that Wowhead maintains a separate FAQ for the addon. For full instructions on installation and use of this mod, please visit
Wowhead's ElvUI Addon Guide
.
Gnosis Castbars and Timers
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
Configurable, customizable cast bars for a variety of targets and situations.
GTFO
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version (Pre-Patch),
Alpha release
for Beta
GTFO (Get The F*** Out) gives you very clear audio warnings when you're standing in something you shouldn't -- usually starting before you begin taking damage.
HandyNotes (With Pre-Patch/Shadowlands Plug-Ins)
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version*
*Works fine in PTR, not yet in Beta
HandyNotes allows you to keep map notes about specific locations in game, as well as download user-created modules for a number of other objectives.
HandyNotes is included here because it is working fine for Pre-Patch, even though it is not working completely in Beta yet. The Beta version does not allow setting personal notes, although the Handynotes: Shadowlands plugin seems to be working fine.
9.0 Plug-Ins:
HandyNotes: Scourge Invasion of Shadowlands
HandyNotes: Shadowlands
Leatrix Plus for Battle of Azeroth and Shadowlands
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
Leatrix Plus is a grab bag of more than 75 small "quality of life" automations, from selling junk to blocking player actions to UI changes. While the release version states that it is 8.3.0 compatible, this version is fully Shadowlands compliant; I've used it in beta since addons were allowed and it's never thrown an error.
MythicPlusTimer
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
Customizes the Mythic+ timer appearance, with various information improvements and real-time data.
NeatPlates
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
Changes the appearance and features for NPC nameplates, both friendly and hostile. This addon is based on Tidy Plates, which is not updated frequently.
Plater
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
Another nameplate mod with different customizable feature sets, including support for WeakAuras.
RareScanner
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
Rarescanner detects rare monsters, events, and special treasures on your map and alerts you when you approach (who doesn't love hearing the little trumpet flourish?). It also places known locations of such vignettes on your map. This doesn't work in pre-Pandaria zones, although it remains to be seen if it will work for the Scourge events in Icecrown.
Rematch
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Beta Version (for Beta); Current Release Version for PTR
Rematch is a must-have for the pet battler: an addon that lets you save teams for specific opponents. It also allows you to set up leveling queues for pets you are trying to level up, add notes, compare pets that are strong or tough vs. various opponents. If you're pet battling without Rematch, you're doing it the hard way.
Undermine Journal
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
Shows realm-specific pricing information in item tooltips for all US and EU realms. This information is updated twice per week. Please note that it is not currently tracking prices on the Beta servers, which is probably fine because individual fish are selling for over 500k gold.
Weak Auras 2
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version for PTR; Shadowlands
Beta Versions 3.0.x, on GitHub
Weak Auras 2 is a framework to allow customizable graphics for indicating buffs, debuffs, and other relevant information. You can write your own parameters, or you can download Weak Auras written by other players. There is a huge repository of pre-written Weak Auras at
https://wago.io/weakauras
World Quest Tab
9.0.1 Compatibility:
Current Release Version
World Quest Tab is a lightweight addon to show world quests available in a particular zone. You can sort quest by priorities such as faction, quest time, or reward type, and filter messages to block out any quest types you don't want to see.

I want to flag Better Wardrobe and Transmog as my new goto mogging addon, a one stop shop for all your mogging needs including randomizers, dungeon / questing / legacy sets, tooltip support etc. Also, a fully-serviced version of Altoholic is back with great new features (Altoholic - Teelo's Fork). Both support Shadowlands.

Bigwigs > DBM personally. Though it's been years since I last used DBM so idk if they've finally changed all the yelling audio cues but I always preferred the simpler audio cues that bw comes with.

'
Sorted
' is a very good and nice looking bag AddOn in my opinion.
It caches your alts reagent, bank and inventory so you can view them from any character. Tag items, categorize items and such.
Best inventory AddOn i've seen yet.

Wholly&Grail are my favourite so that i am sure that i don't overlook any quest or breadcrumb.
Many people complain experience is rare so you will need every bit of xp you can get to reach 60 in your leveling campaign.

I want to add some too I use (some for very long time):
Range Display
, to show how far you're from your target/focus target/mouseover target (specially useful for ranged, but melees too, so they know they don't need to 'hug' some targets, like some bosses, to 'be in melee range').
Dialogkey
,(Currently has a bug with mousewheel, but doesn't impact on gameplay at minimum) really helps when talking to npcs, gossip windows (you can even add interactions for windows like those with 'Yes' and 'no' confirmations) for quicker gameplay.
Opie
, really, it saves you a lot of room on action bars, and addons, since you can put even MACROS on the ring slices. I have at least 2 rings, macroed to the F- keys on keyboard, one for 'teleportation stuff', including the whistle, and other for more utility, including Professions and their utility items I use a lot, like Moll-E, Katy, (both are mail toys), Jeeves (which I have on all my engineers), etc.
BattlePetBattleStats, BattlePetBreedID, BattlePetBinds and DerangementPetBattleCooldowns
for those Battle Pet addicts. A note for those that use ElvUI, go to 'Skins' section and toggle off the 'Pet Batltle' setting, if you don't like ElvUI's skinning on Pet Battle but still want to keep ElvUI, you'll see all the default skins and backdrops while those addons won't even have to conflict with post ElvUI's updates.
Altoholic Teelio's Fork+Datastore
combo, yeah there might be other similar addons, like Armory, but currently Altoholic is doing a better job. Te only issue I'm having is with the 'Search' box on top left not getting me the stuff returned, at ALL, and I know I have em on at least 1 other toons, for example, just wanting to know which has it, when you don't have it on current one.
FarmHUD+Gathermate+Routes
really work well together. You might even use FarmHUD on characters that farm Archaeology sites too.
Gnome Sequence Enhancer or GSE for short
, really helpfull too for those altoholics. You want an addon that SAVES MACROS ACCOUNT-WIDE, and don't want to configure new ones on EVERY NEW TOON? That's the one for you. You just need to get used to it if it's new to you, by default saves macros BY CLASS, so when you log on to a new DK for example, all those macros you use to have on your main DKs will be available on them. And what is the best? There's a
site
where the community itself can post and grab macros.
Profession Assistance
makes it so that those herbs/pigments, gems/ores tooltips shows what those items prospect/mill/disenchant into/from. You can even add a modifier so you don't conflict the tooltips with those of other addons (like TSM).
EnhanceBattlefieldMinimap+Ploop+Scorpio
, if you're like me and may like an option to show the zone's map in a smaller but understandable scale and don't like opening the world map a lot, this one improves the default Blizzard Battlefield Map (really handy on BGs/Arenas/DGs/IEs) that you toggle On/Off by
Shift+M
, it is a great option. It currently works with the
Routes
addon above(for gathering),
HandyNotes
, etc.
Rematch
, really one of the best ones, and a must-have, for anyone doing pet battles. If the above ones don't fit for you, this one really should. It seems a bit overwhelming at first for first installs, but you get the hang of it realy quick.
Most of these might seem 'new' to many of you, but I've found them as really handy and worth a shot so you can test them too, most might not be updated too right from the start of prepatch, but I found them so handy, if we spam the authors they'll try and update them too, ASAP if possible. I made this list just to give more options to all of ya.

Huh, plenty of room for competition I guess. 15 "best" addons and of them I use only three (HandyNotes, RareScanner, Weak Auras). The others don't obviously fill in any gaps for me, mostly because I already have the functionality through some other similar addon. This leaves me feeling a little ambivalent about how the "best" moniker was determined among sets.

NessieMo
My additions to that list would be GTFO, TomTom & Paste, The Undermine Journal, Crap Away & Bartender.

ArkInventory (Already using Bagnon and bag/bank sorting addons, but might try it if it is lighter-weight)
Azeroth Auto Pilot (I will never touch an addon that skips cinematics, auto-selects flight paths, or tells me what to do and when to do it. Sometimes I like to stop and pet battle, queue for a dungeon, or camp na rare spawn on one of my hunters.)
Bagnon (Yes, please, and thank you.)
ElvUI (Already have an alternative that I like.)
Deadly Boss Mods (Never touch the stuff.)
Details! Damage Meters Shadowlands (Haven't used Details since vanilla, as I literally don't care who does what in dungeons and raids, as long as we win.)
Gnosis Castbars and Timers (Castbars are fine, and don't need timers.)
HandyNotes With Pre-Patch/Shadowlands Plug-Ins (I do use HandyNotes, mostly for rare locations, combined with SilverDragon and Rarirty.)
Leatrix Plus (Might check this one out, to see what it does. I already have a lot of QoL addons, so if it does multiple of those things, and I could swap 10 addons for one, maybe I will.)
MythicPlusTimer (Never set foot in M+, partially due to the necessity of stuff like this.)
NeatPlates (My nameplates are turned off.)
RareScanner (I feel like I used to use this before I found SilverDragon.)
Undermine Journal (Not big on AH, but might check this out since I recently picked up TSM (Trade Skill Master). I had heard of it, but never needed it.)
Weak Auras 2 (Nah. Don't need it.)
World Quest Tab (Already using World Quest Tracker, but will check on this to see if it seems better.)
Some that I use, but aren't listed. Maybe they haven't been updated, or just didn't make it onto the radar:
The biggest ones for me, are Dominos combined with MoveAnything. I am big on customizing my UI, and don't need all of that graphical bloat. Plus, Dominos shows you all of the possible buttons all at once, if you want. It's also had eazy keybinding mode since it was created.
All The Things - Tracks collections
Een's Chat Window Backup - saves/loads chat window layouts and settings
Per Character Favorite Mounts - a bit buggy still
Rematch - For pet battles
Rarity - keeps track of rare items, and number of attempts
MogIt - not sure if I'm keeping this one, honestly. I liked it back when Transmog was new.
Wowhead Looter - go ahead Wowhead, it's Ok to recommend your own addon... ;)
Macro Toolkit - the default macro UI is bleh
Tomorrow, I will probably pare down to necessities, and then go find new addons that do similar things.

Starlin
I want to give a +1 for ArkInventory. If you take the time to set it up, it's incredibly powerful.
Also, consider an action bar mod, like Dominos.
And a data broker mod, like Bazooka. This adds an info bar at the top of your screen that many mods tie into to display useful info and menus. A good all in one Broker pack is Broker Everything.
And TomTom, to make use of all the awesome coordinates found in Wowhead comments.

Macro Toolkit is now completely broken in Shadowlands pre-patch :( Macros dont work anymore, and i had some very long, multi-spell, multi-purpose macros in there that i wrote long ago. I had to use Macro Toolkit because i dont have enough free macro space to make multiple different macros since Blizz refuses to give us more macro space.

Infinite Raid Tools
brings independent modules for raiding both general and boss specific. Such as individual consumable tracker bound to the ready check frame which is getting an update in Shadowlands with all the new armor kit and weapon oil consumables, also featuring interrupt module keeping track of when its your turn to interrupt and many more modules. New boss modules are also coming for Castle Nathria.
Raid Attendance Tracker
is a self sustained and automatic attendance system with loads of features. Only 1 person needs the addon and all players attendance is tracked automatically with each raid both attending and absent players. The attendance is summarized and ranked based of a unique and exclusive algorithm accounting for both % and total attendance. It takes 60 seconds to setup and has support for alts and with the attendance data you can prioritize who gets mounts first or as a tie breaker on gear because of the advanced ranking system.

Let me add Aardvark to the list. Long one of my favorite addons, it's a junk seller that has separate settings to sell stuff globally or just on that character. It also has a protect feature, and a destroy feature.
Also, KgPanels is still up and running, for those of you that like boxes behind your addons.
AdiButton Auras is also still alive and kicking going in to Shadowlands, and getting updated per class as players help fill in the spellcasting gaps.

Azeroth Auto Pilot There is a problem with this current iteration of this addon, namely it will only custom path run you through WoD only. It also is pretty much guaranteed you wont reach level 50 either using this addon. Your likely to be a few bars short. It also derails and goes after treasure, however that said, the only time to go after treasure is when you have flying..since being mobile and airbome you wont run into everything under the sun. Bare this in mind when using this addon, its very limited and if your sick to your bowels of WoD then I would avoid it like the plague. As long as people have flying right upto and including BFA, then every zone is fastest since they level with you.

Average joe makes his post, which to be perfectly honest most of the mods are either out dated , broken or don't work properly. Handy notes and Auto pilot are just 2 of the addons that need updating to work in other expansions (aap is stuck in wod, because they claim its the fastest route to 50, which is completely subjective and not entirely true either. Handy notes treasure map thing hasn't been updated since the beginning of legion, so following his example, you end up a leveling mod that cannot get you to 50 and in an expansion they claim is fastest and i completely disagree with it completely, and the handy notes is only useful if it remains updated to work in BFA after SL launches. Cant say I am a fan of the rest of the stuff he uses, there are far better addons imo.

I would also add Pawn to that list, as it immediately indicates if a loot drop is an upgrade and by how much, courtesy of a little green arrow
