What is Corruption?
Corruption is a new system of power progression which replaces Titanforging; instead of item level bonuses, they will now have a chance to be Corrupted by the Old Gods, represented by the purple-colored stat which adds both a positive effect and stacking negative attribute which incurs penalties at various thresholds. Although the negative effects can reach a point at which they become debilitating, carefully managing the bonuses and penalties allows for a great deal of customization and individual power gain.
Corrupted gear can be freely cleansed by MOTHER in order to remove both effects and revert them back into normal items. Corruption can also be added on non-corrupted items, by purchasing
Preserved Contaminants with MOTHER
. Corruption resistance can also be gained over time, both from new minor essences, and the legendary cloak
, allowing more corrupted effects to be worn. For more information on all potential Corruptions, see our
Corruption Overview Guide
.
Buying Corruptions with Echoes of Ny'alotha for Beast Mastery Hunter
What Corruptions should I Buy from MOTHER on a Beast Mastery Hunter?
Corruptions now can be
purchased from MOTHER
using
. Every few days, a new set of Corruptions will be accessible.
With that in mind, we present a list of the best corruptions to purchase from MOTHER on a Beast Mastery Hunter.
- Good in every situation, the "holy grail" Beast Mastery Corruption. Preferably at tier 3.
- Preferably at tier 3. As good as Severe in most situations (probably better if you don't have any Expedients yet). It really depends on how much haste you have on your gear and whether or not you're using other Haste procs such as
,
, and the Mechagon set ring bonus.
- Preferably at tier 3. This is a lower priority than Severe or Expedient, but when using Vision of Perfection and 3x Primal Instincts, using 1 of these is likely to be a part of a BiS Corruption setup.
The best strategy for most people will likely be a good balance of
and
. When these are available, you should generally be buying as many as you can (at least until we know the full schedule of the vendor). Secondly, you want to apply these to your highest item level crit/haste pieces when possible.
It's also worth noting that the
from the
is something you'll want to continue using on top of the Severe and Expedient Corruptions as it is a very efficient use of Corruption (but you cannot buy this from the vendor).
The final Corruption goal for most BM Hunters will likely be 3x
, 3x
, 1x
, and
. This is not a hard and fast rule, and will vary slightly based on your gear and essences.
Best Beast Mastery Hunter Corruption Bonuses
We have comparative simulations for each of the various Corruption affixes which can roll on gear, courtesy of SimulationCraft and Bloodmallet. While this overview should give you a good general idea of how each compare to one another, your specific character may see slightly different results based on how you are geared and what Corruptions are available to you; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
. When looking at corruption effects it is important not to look at the overall power of a given effect, but at how much power per corruption is gained while staying below your safe threshold. By using Top Gear, you can play with the Max Corruption bar, allowing you to maximize your damage based on your Corruption risk choices.
This is simply an overview and doesn't take into account the negative effects of stacking Corruption. While increasing Corruption will continually increase player power, it comes at the cost of serious side effects, which may be debilitating in some activities or encounters. Reference the Corruption Effect notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of these bonuses and deal with the detriments.
Please also note that when using more than one of the same corruption, even different tiers of the same corruption, the effect/benefit (damage, statistical gains, etc) stack while durations and proc rates remain unchanged. The only exception is
, unique to the Ny'alotha raid weapon
, which will proc independently when dual wielded.
These sims are arguably more important than the "raw DPS" simulations as they show how efficient each Corruption effect is. And when you are working with a limited budget of Corruption, that is a very important metric.

These Corruption bonuses are the strongest overall for Beast Mastery Hunters, taking into account both their overall DPS contributions
and
their DPS per point of Corruption value (essentially how efficient they are).
- Since Beast Mastery Hunters primarily stack Critical Strike, this bonus is one of the strongest. All of your crit (and any crit procs) will be boosted by this. It also has a low Corruption cost, making it a very efficient use of your Corruption.
- As good as Severe in most situations (probably better if you don't have any Expedients yet). It really depends on how much haste you have on your gear and whether or not you're using other Haste procs such as
,
, and the Mechagon set ring bonus.
- It's nice to have one of these in your arsenal if you're using 3x Primal Instincts and the Vision of Perfection Major Essence, or if you frequently do Mythic+ dungeons. You should usually prioritize it below Severe and Expedient, but it's worth considering for Mythic+ fans.
-
Tier 1 only
(tier 2 is an inefficient use of Corruption). At only 12 Corruption, this is a good filler to get close to any cap you're aiming for.
These bonuses are still strong, but may be less efficient or more situational.
- After the recent 35% nerf, this is only really worth considering if you happen to get it on a 475 or higher piece.
- After the buff which doubled the stats granted, this is now a desirable Corruption. It can even be one of your best if at least 2 others in your group use it.
- Even after the nerfs, this is still one of the most powerful single target Corruption bonuses, but it has a very high Corruption cost. Due to it hitting a random target, the stacking damage mechanic can only be used to its full potential when there is only one target for it to hit (and it's better the longer the fight lasts). It loses value in short encounters or where there's multiple targets. Furthermore, it scales with item level so it will most likely only be worth using up this much of your Corruption budget if it's obtained at 460+ item level. Anything lower and the DPS per Corruption will probably not be worth it.
- A big Haste proc that is good in all situations. While it might look underwhelming at only 4 seconds, it has a high proc rate (approximately 5 procs per minute) and is a very efficient use of Corruption.
- A stacking crit buff that has a long enough duration that it should never fall off in normal combat. After the buff, it's quite good.
- This Versatility proc relies you you taking damage rather than dealing damage which makes it inconsistent for some situations. But if you are constantly taking damage (at least once every 5-10 seconds), this is surprisingly valuable.
These bonuses should usually only be used if you have no other choices from the upper tiers.
(AoE) - When it procs at opportune times, it can put out some tremendous AoE damage. The problem is the low proc rate means it has a good chance of not proccing at the best times. Also, the Corruption cost is very high. Gameplay wise, it snakes away from your character's facing direction (not a straight line) and only hits out to about 20 yards. If you are strafing when it procs, it could miss your targets completely. Sticking with stat-based Corruptions is just going to lead to more consistent AoE damage.
(
Tier 2
) - While the tier 1 version provides good value for your Corruption, the tier 2 does not.
- After the big nerfs, this isn't usually going to be worth using. The AoE damage it deals is split between all targets hit, and it relies on you being max health to deal full damage. Can put out decent damage to a focused target, but it has downsides. The damage pulses from your character and only has a 12-15 yard range, so you always need to make sure you are close enough to hit all the enemies. Corruption cost is also high.
- Similar to the Haste proc, except longer duration and 3 procs per minute. It will shine the most in dungeons but is not very desirable.
- This bonus has the potential to deal a lot of damage, but it has a large Corruption cost that makes it inefficient for PvE use (it's more popular in PvP). If it's on an item level 460 or 475 piece, it could be worth using.
- Provides little DPS benefit. Not worth using unless it's your only option.
Yeah, your luck is that bad.
- If you have a lot of versatility, this could be decent, but for the majority of builds this will provide very little value. Unless its your only bonus available, you probably don't want to bother with it.
- Unfortunately, Blizzard did not make this bonus affect pets, so it has little to no value for a Beast Mastery Hunter. Unless it's your only Corruption bonus, it's probably worth cleansing.
- Could be useful for some strategies, but since Corruption is an extremely limited resource, it will usually be better spent elsewhere.
- Leech is not effective for Beast Mastery since all of our pet damage doesn't get leeched to us. Cleanse it off.
Best Beast Mastery Hunter Ny'alotha Weapons
Besides random corruption effects, weapons from the new Ny'alotha raid also have exclusive effects on them. Similar to random corruption effects, if you obtain a weapon with a subpar effect, you can always cleanse it. As a Beast Mastery Hunter, you can obtain the following unique weapon:
always comes with
- despite some quirky behavior, it is a strong and useful corruption.
Every auto shot reduces one of your cooldowns by 2 seconds (it will only randomly pick from abilities that are on cooldown). What this boils down to is more Kill Commands and Barbed Shots per fight, and more uptime on Bestial Wrath and Aspect of the Wild. If you combine this bow with the
minor essence, you can achieve an Aspect of the Wild cooldown close to 1 minute, depending on your luck. The problem is defensive and utility cooldowns like Aspect of the Turtle or Cheetah, Exhilaration, Disengage, Intimidation, Traps, etc. can be randomly picked as well. In simulations, by default it assumes that 75% of the cooldown reductions will apply to offensive spells. That is a pretty fair guess, but if you are constantly using all of your utility spells it could be less than 75% in the real world.
Even factoring in the problem of utility spells "stealing" cooldown reduction from your DPS spells, it's still a strong bonus and it only costs 25 Corruption. Note that the final boss of Ny'alotha drops
, which is 10 item levels higher with better stats. If you already have top tier corruption bonuses on other pieces, this is possibly a better weapon for you despite that it doesn't come with a guaranteed bonus. It all depends on your other corruption.
If you would like to tweak how this bow works in simulations, you can use the following line in Raidbots. Add it to the
"Custom APL and SimC Options" field (below the main sim options):
bfa.whispered_truths_offensive_chance=0.75
Change the "0.75" to the percentage of cooldown reductions to apply to offensive spells (75% is the default, even if you don't add this line).
Dealing with Negative Effects of Corruption
In addition to the bonuses, corrupted items also increase the Corrupted stat by varying amounts based on the tier of the effect. Corruption stat incurs penalties that the player must deal with, and while these effects start out rather benign, they quickly ramp up in both potency and impact, to the point where it can be very hard to deal with during a Dungeon or Raid encounter, and even become outright debilitating at the highest levels.
There are five effects unlocked at different total corruption levels:
- Unlocked with 1 Corruption
- Unlocked with 20 Corruption
- Unlocked with 40 Corruption
- Unlocked with 60 Corruption
- Unlocked with 80 Corruption
Learn more about Corruption in our in-depth guide!
At Rank 6, the legendary Cloak
gains an on-use effect which will remove and immune all currently active negative corruption effects.
- Beast Mastery Hunters can trivialize this effect by taking the
talent and using Disengage to be freed from it.
- Simply move out of the corrupted zone. Beast Mastery has no penalties for movement.
- Using Feign Death is the easiest way to deal with this. If you stay feigned for about 1 second, the spawn should usually disappear. Sometimes it will aggro on your pet when you do this, and then may run back to you again. In this case you can either trap it with Freezing Trap or use Intimidation to stun it. If no CC or Feign Death is available, this is a good time to use your cloak's on-use ability to remove it.
- Same as above, though it's now even more important to crowd control or nullify the spawn. In most cases you should not be crossing this threshold, unless the content is trivial.
- Now you're just asking to die. Your healers will probably stop healing you out of spite. You need to be an absolute pro when it comes to stopping every Thing From Beyond spawn.
How Much Corruption Should a Beast Mastery Hunter Take?
If you want to play it safe, you should stick to a maximum of
39
Corruption. If you think you can handle the extra pressure, you can push it higher but I would not recommend this when you're still learning all of the mechanics in the raid. You shouldn't go above 59 in most situations. In dungeons, having to always be running away from things could also cause problems such as inadvertently pulling extra mobs. As time goes on your Corruption resistance will increase and you'll be able to equip more bonus effects at the same time.

I'm confused why each of the ranks are simming so close, like within the margin of error of being identical. I'd think that for something simple like
暴戾
, that there'd be difference between them enough that you'd see 3 > 2 > 1.
Also, I feel like we've been cheated a little by
击穿
not working on pet crits. I know it's been the same with similar effects, and I wonder if it's intentional design, or just cut-and-paste from an original oversight (and not bothering to change it).

One thing I noticed is that for severe when I put the armor on, it increases crit passive by 1% which is not much compared to Deadly Momentum. Unless there is something that makes more crit increase or a way to reduce corruption to make Deadly Momentum bis eventually.

I don't quite understand the graph above. Should Whispered Truths_1 only be applied to a piece of 430 gear? Or are you trying to say that the effect doesn't scale with the item level?

After about 4k crit, the dps per point of crit drops significantly.
Haste(Primary) /Mastery takeovers after that
