In previous expansions we've had hour-based missions in which troops and champions were sent out on some sort of mission, which was based on a very simple system of abilities and counters, but depended on an RNG percent based system, where even a 99% chance to complete could still result in failure. The new system is still offline, but promises more depth and less randomness, intended to be more similar to WoW's actual combat. Also unlike previous missions, the new system is intended to have more nuance with actual parties of covenant specific characters including different roles (Tank/Healer/DPS) fighting similar groups of enemies in a turn based style of gameplay seemingly reminiscent of gameplay found in older tactical role-playing games such as Ogre Battle.
The system is not currently testable on the Shadowlands Alpha, but is intended to be testable over the next few builds. As a form of gameplay which happens offline, the system is also planned to be available on the Mobile Companion App, similar to previous Garrision/Order Hall/War Campaign missions.
