Quest is bugged, I think...
If you soul suck the quest item off of somebody else's felhound spawn you're screwed, though I hope I'm wrong. Part of the quest objective is to get it to spawn, which you need the Shadow Carving to drop... which will NOT drop if you've already done the last part. At least that is my theory. I've been farming these stupid shadowmages for over two hours and not a single one has dropped the carving. No, I'm not in a raid or anything. Somebody please tell me I'm missing something incredibly obvious here...

In order to have the Ravenous Felhound spawn, you will need to find the mages to the East of Blackwood Lake. Despite the quest text which states that you have received a special soul shard that amplifies arcane magic, you will not receive an item in your bags from the questgiver and the mages cast shadow magic.

Kill a few of the mages until they drop the Shadow Carving item. This is non-interactible and will just sit in your bags. Fight the mages further and allow them to cast harmful spells on you until a Ravenous Felhound appears. After this point, you can kill the mage as both the mage and felhunter hit relatively hard, so it might be hard to complete the quest with both alive.

The felhound is unremarkable and has low HP - the only issue I've found is that it attacks quickly which causes your Drain Soul spell to be cut short and (frequently) not deal any damage to the enemy. Critically, Drain Soul has to actually deal damage to the felhound in order to get the shard, so you may need to have some kind of CC on hand for the felhound in order to get enough distance to channel the spell fully. This is made easier if you have Almas Colhidas which has a chance to harvest a shard each time you deal damage. (Edit: this is also made much easier using the Soul Siphon rune, which increases the frequency of Drain Soul damage 3x)

After you have drained its soul, you will have the shard in hand and you can combine it with your Foice do Caos Esgotada (Enfeitiçamento).
